FORESTVILLE RSL CLUB

CEO Message Thanks for your support during the current COVID crisis. While we seem to be inching towards a return to a ‘Pre-COVID normal’ we still need you to maintain a regime of hand hygiene and 1.5m ‘social distancing’, for the time being. Here comes Autumn! An absolutely fantastic time to be in Sydney. The days are warm and the nights are mild – hey, what a great excuse to visit and enjoy Pickets! And when you visit you’ll be able to ‘taste-test’ the new, seasonal menu, a part of which is an expanded ‘Asian’ offering. The Board and Management were very willing to act as ‘tasters’ and have given the new menu a big ‘thumbs up’. In the Bistro, you’ll also see that we’re supporting the NSW Government’s “Dine & Discover” initiative by offering some blackboard specials, specifically priced at the voucher face value of $25. The Club is already set up to accept the vouchers so come on in and spend the Government’s money. We’re also heading into a pretty hectic period on everyone’s social calendar. Easter, ANZAC Day and Mother’s Day are all on the horizon and, after the disappointment last year where all of these significant events were disrupted by COVID, the Club is looking to ensure that this year we deliver all three at 100% .

will experience the disruption, we appreciate the understanding and patience of all members during the renovations. The building works include the upgrading of all our TV’s, and the installation of a new Audio/ Visual system, which will give the Club greater flexibility in this important, operational area. Finally, we’re suspending our Foxtel subscription until further notice. For us, this is a $60,000 per year expense and it is felt that we can better utilize these funds in other areas of the Club, at this time. Don’t worry though, you’ll be able to watch 5 NRL matches live per week, the Finals Series and Grand Final plus all three State of Origin games. There will be 4 AFL matches per week plus the Final Series and Grand Final. If you like a bet, you’ll be pleased to know that there will be no change at all to what you can watch, going forward. Waratahs Super Rugby matches, Big Bash Cricket, NFL, NBL and U.S. Baseball are also available, plus more. That should be enough content for even the most avid sports enthusiast! Again, thanks for your patronage and support and we’ll see you in the Club soon.

Ian Thomson Chief Executive Officer

The on-going challenge of remaining relevant to our members and guests will see us undertake some building works in the months ahead. While it will mainly be our Gaming customers who 3

Raise Foundation Raise Foundation, one of Forestville RSL’s 2020 ClubGrants proud recipients, matches community mentors with students at local secondary schools for a one-to-one mentoring experience which has a proven positive impact on young people, through goal-setting, to increased confidence and developing the ability to ask for help. To become a Raise volunteer youth mentor, all you need is a desire to make a difference. Raise provides expert training and, once matched with a student in your community, the program is structured, managed and supported by a qualified Raise counsellor. Right now, Raise is recruiting mentors all around Australia. We’re seeking people that want to make a difference and drive change. Whilst our Northern Beaches’ programs are already full for this year, we are still looking for mentors across other parts of Sydney so if you, or anyone you know can spare some time to mentor a young person, please consider signing up to programs in the following areas:

• • •

The Hills Shire Canterbury and Bankstown St George and Sutherland Shire

As well as the positive outcomes for young people, it is a rewarding opportunity for mentor volunteers to feel good, give back and find a sense of purpose. Get a friend to sign up today at www.raise.org.au/mentor

For more information visit:

www.raise.org.au

Thanks to the Forestville RSL grant, Raise has been able to offer it’s best practice mentoring to The Forest High School where 15 students will be matched with 15 community mentors for the duration of the program.

SPORTING SECTIONS

s b u C b u S

Billiards & Snooker The Snooker section at Forestville RSL has pretty much been around as long as the club itself. We have three tables one of which was donated by Alan Park in 1961. Snooker is said to have been invented by the English Army based in India around 1875, the term Snooker was a derogatory term used to describe inexperienced or first-year military personnel.

Cost: There are no joining or playing fees however there are light meters that cost $3 per hour.

Competitions: We have two competitions running, there are five, six person teams who play the open grade on Monday and Wednesday nights. We also have one A Grade team that plays at home on alternate Tuesday nights and we hope to ad another A grade team shortly.

16

Snooker is a very challenging game to play, with a 30 break considered a good score [approximately 8 consecutive balls potted]. Recently in the A Grade competition one player made a break of 110 which is a very high standard and an estimated 30 consecutive balls potted.

"Members are welcome to try out the tables at any time . There are several club cues in the racks." Contact:
