SWE Region B Conference
Written by Tasnia Qazi
The Sonora Region Conference took place this past Saturday in the Hilton San Diego Resort & Spa. This annual conference is targeted towards professional and collegiate SWE members from all over Region B, which is comprised of the states of California, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, and New Mexico. A total of 18 SWE@UCR members carpooled over to the hotel next to the Mission Bay beach to experience a day full of networking and workshops. Attendees received tote bags full of goodies, alongside three full course meals. Additionally, the conference hosted a Career Fair with over 25 companies available for attendees to network with. Our SWE@UCR members were not only able to network with impressive company representatives but with past UCR section presidents as well. Our hard work as an active collegiate section was also recognized with an engraved plaque. All in all, our trip to the conference was worthwhile and definitely beneficial. Evening With Industy
Written by Danielle Caponpon and Brenda PeĂąa
This past Thursday SWE-UCR had their second annual Evening With Industry. We invited companies to UCR to have dinner and a chat with students. The evening began with networking at each individual table before dinner was served. For dinner we served salad and pasta and had creme brĂťlĂŠe for dessert. After dinner we heard from our past SWE-UCR president Heather Salvador. Heather was a past professional development chair (09-10) and president (10-11) of SWE. She also kicked started our professional dress fashion show which has become an annual SWE-UCR event. Heather spoke to us about her experience at UCR and how she used what she learned here in industry with VACCO industries. Our second speaker was Dr. Ian Wheeldon, a chemical and environmental engineering professor at UC Riverside. He spoke about his path in academia and gave three pieces of advice. His three simple points were about working through hardships and making the best of your opportunities. We ended the night with an open networking, allowing our students to interact with industry representatives other than the ones they originally sat with. The students who went were very engaging and the company representatives had nothing but praise about our members. This is something we would like to thank all our members for. They really proved to each representative that
Evening With Industy continued UCR engineering is truly an impactful place. To make this event a success, we teamed up with several other organizations such as Theta Tau and IMPACT. Theta Tau was helpful and went above and beyond what was asked of them throughout the night. IMPACT provided valuable contacts to companies that allowed us to have a diverse set of companies to come out and speak with our members. We hope that everyone who attend had a great night and that many will be fortunate enough to gain opportunities from this event. We look forward to holding another event for all our members.

Why did you join SWE? I joined SWE because I wanted to meet more girls in the engineering field. Luckily the girls in my classes were also in the club, so they gave me a better reason to join the club. What do you like most about SWE? I like the friendly environment of this club. I was actually able to meet a lot of people within a short time.
