Luxfer Tour Written by Ryan Flores On Wednesday, November 6th, a small group of SWE members had the privilege of touring Luxfer Gas Cylinder’s Riverside manufacturing facility. After arriving, we donned safety glasses and proceeded to the factory floor to witness the step-by-step process of producing a variety of cylinders. The company had a vast array of products, ranging from those the size of apples used to provide 20 minutes of oxygen to miners in emergency situations to large containers destined to become alternative fuel cylinders, commonly used on buses and semi-trailer trucks. The method of creating these cylinders varied, based on the specifications set by the buyer and could be made of a variety of different materials, depending on the usage of the cylinder. We witnessed large metal disks being pressed into and stretched into shape by large hydraulic machines. We also saw numerous industrial robots performing an assortment of jobs from weaving resin coated carbon fibers around cylinders to cleaning them. Overall, the experience was fascinating as we were able to stand within arm’s length of many of the machines and speak directly to engineers that we one day aspire to be.

Tau Beta Pi & SWE BBQ

Written by Stephanie Eatinger

This coming Thursday, Tau Beta Pi will be hosting their annual Fall Barbecue. This year, they have asked The Society of Women Engineers to co-host the event! The event is for new candidates and current initiates to socialize. This year, all attendees, including those from SWE, are encouraged to bring guests. Every attendee is to bring an item for the potluck. The barbecuing will begin at 7:00 pm and continue until all the food is gone. With a large turnout expected, there will be plenty of food to go around and a lot of new faces to interact with. This event will be a great opportunity to meet and make new friends with people from the rest of the college of engineering. Tau Beta Pi has been so kind as to extend an invitation to all of us in SWE. If you would like to join us for an evening of great food and people, please RSVP by clicking here. We hope to see you there!
