Dr. Connie Marciano, the dinner keynote speaker, spoke of her underdog victory of landing the role of White House Doctor. She was the only female and racial minority candidate. Her primary message was to use your unconventional presence in engineering spaces as an advantage- after all, everyone will notice if you are the only girl in the room.

We Local also housed Design Lab, a volunteer activity to engage female students in STEM. As an attendee and We Local host committee member, I am proud of how organized and inspiring this event was. I want to be a part of many more SWE conferences in the future. - Sangavi Pari

“As engineers, we were going to be in a position to change the world, not just study it.” -Henry Petroski

WE Local 2018 Phoenix brought together women engineers predominantly from the southwest region of the US. Attendees enjoyed talks on branding, networking, rising professionally, and the importance of positivity.

HOLIDAY POTLUCK & ORNAMENT EXCHANGE About a dozen SWE Orange County members and their significant others gathered for the annual Holiday Party Potluck at the home of Natalie White. We ate delicious food, enjoyed tasty beverages, and had a lively ornament exchange which helped get us into the holiday spirit! - Natalie White

YOGA ON THE BEACH — HUNTINGTON BEACH SWE OC Socials organized a yoga and brunch event on January 13th. Seven SWE members joined us for yoga on the beach in Huntington Beach. The hour-long yoga event was hosted by a local Meetup.com group with folks from all around the area. Following the relaxing yoga workshop, the SWE members walked to Pacific Hideaway for a casual brunch. Everyone had a great time and multiple people expressed that they need to do yoga on the beach more often! -- Kanchan Swaroop

SWE UCI BUSINESS ATTIRE 101 Roxana Carrillo, Rachel Rosenzweig, and Cynthia Padilla volunteered for a panel for collegiate SWE members at UCI about what to wear for interviews, internships, and industry settings. They presented their professional experiences, including what to — and what not to — wear, and answered audience questions. - Rachel Rosenzweig

STONE BREWING TOUR — ESCONDIDO Ten SWE OC members visited the Stone Brewing restaurant and brewery in Escondido. Following our lovely lunch on the large patio, we joined the tour where we were able to see multiple areas of the plant. The tour guide detailed the fermentation process, lab analysis, and bottling process that the beer goes through from start to finish. At the end of the tour, we were also able to taste samples of 4 different beers made on site and take home a small souvenir glass. -

CHOCXO TOUR – BEAN TO BAR CHOCOLATIER Two dozen SWE OC members, friends and family met up at ChocXO in Irvine for a walk through the process of creating the tasty treat that we enjoy. We learned about the chocolate making process from “bean to bar” We learned how chocolate is sourced, fermented and dried. We viewed into the windows of the ChocXO factory to see the machinery that makes it all happen. Samples of raw cacao pulp, cocoa nibs, cocoa liquor and finished products were tasted. The warm, dark chocolate fountain out of the wall is a favorite. Everyone was able to select some bars to take home. Cocoa beans from around the world makes this an educational, fun and interactive experience. - Kimberly Roberts

OCEC AWARDS NIGHT Two of our members, Kanchan Swaroop and Pedro Cordon, were awarded with the Orange County Engineering Council (OCEC) Outstanding Young Engineer Award. We enjoyed dinner and a keynote speech from Sabri Sansoy, CEO and Roboticist at Orchanic. There was also an engaging presentation about NASA’s Cassini-Huygens mission to Saturn.

ASCE JOINT DINNER — “CREATING A WINNING MINDSET” On February 20, the American Society of Civil Engineers, Orange County Young Members Forum (ASCE OC YMF) and SWE OC hosted a joint event where Leisa Reid from Productive Learning presented on "Creating a Winning Mindset." The event helped uncover thinking that prevents us from seeing opportunities and accomplishing our goals. We have approximately 30 thoughts per second, where 90 percent are subconscious and 10 percent are conscious.

Given that a majority of our mind is driven by our subconscious, it can be difficult to break a bad habit or begin a new one. By noticing our actions, inactions, and emotions during a time of internal struggle, we can become more aware of our unique way of thinking that is holding us back. SWE-OC is always excited to conduct joint events with ASCE OC YMF and is looking forward to the continued partnership! - Roxana Carrillo

“Scientists study the world as it is; engineers create the

world that has never been.” VIRGIN ORBIT TOUR

—Theodore von Karman

SWE-OC and OCEC toured the Virgin Orbit facility in Long Beach. It was a tremendous opportunity for young engineers to see the aerospace industry and learn about how a rocket is made at Virgin Orbit. We also had a professional tour that allowed people from outside the aerospace industry to learn more about rockets and the design and thought processes that go into these massive projects. It was fun seeing all the giant machines and models they have in the facility and really cool hearing about the various fields of engineering varying from computer science to materials to structural engineering. It was a very popular tour and will likely be repeated in the future!

Girls had the opportunity to engineer water bottle rockets and were thrilled to launch them and watch them fly.

NASA Solar System Ambassador Michal Peri gave an inspirational presentation on the quest for life outside our solar system, and SWE volunteers discussed their current positions and career paths and answered great questions from the girls. - Lydia McDowell
