Access a Brighter Future

People say that you don’t get a second chance at life, but they don’t know about the Access to Higher Education and Access to Art courses.

Access courses are specifically for mature students who are looking for the opportunity to start the career they have always wanted. The course gives them the qualifications for entry into university and the skills needed to succeed on their chosen Higher Education course. Can I afford it? Yes! With a '24+ Loan' being introduced by the government from April 2013. If you complete your HE course you won’t even have to pay the loan back (see page 2 of this Guide for details).

16

“I think that you are never too old to learn and at this time in my life, when my financial commitments are fewer I feel that this is the ideal time for me to take my career in a new direction” said Access student David Evans.

Our Access students have gone on to a number of different university courses: Lloyd is about to graduate as a new teacher and looking forward to starting in his new career in September. Emma and Carrie are both excited to be starting their Nursing degrees. Sarah, a student and a working mum is preparing for her Physiotherapy degree. Hannah is thrilled to have been accepted on to a Psychology degree. Sally-Anne is now in her fifth year as a qualified midwife.

It is never too late to begin a new career and now it has never been so affordable with the help of the 24+ loan. Can you afford to miss taking the next step towards your chosen career and changing your life?

Learners of all ages are eligible for free GCSE mathematics classes if they do not already hold this qualification at A* - C. GCSE Mathematics prepares

learners to function mathematically in the world and provides a thorough grounding for further study and is highly respected by employers and educational institutions.

The course is aimed at helping students achieve a C grade and follows the Edexcel GCSE Mathematics Foundation Level syllabus, although there may be an opportunity for students to be entered at the Higher Level. The GCSE will be assessed by two written exam papers in June.

Prospective students should have a minimum of Maths GCSE grade D. Students with alternative qualifications should discuss the course before registering.

Experience can be taken into account for students returning to education after a number of years in employment. All students will be assessed at the start of the course and alternative pre GCSE courses at the college may be suggested.

This is an intensive course covering the whole syllabus in 32 weeks and motivation and commitment from students is vital right from the start. There will be

regular practise of examination type questions and work will be regularly set and marked. This is an integral part of the course and students must be prepared to spend 2 hours or more per week on independent study as well as class time. Both calculator and non calculator skills are developed throughout the

course and students will require a scientific calculator.

Useful Information

Course Fees/Concessions: The Government, through the Education Funding Agency and the Skills Funding Agency, makes funding available for some learners to cover the tuition costs of their programme (for example, those in receipt of certain benefits). The Secretary of State does not expect tuition fees to be charged to full-time or part-time 16-18 year old students on courses marked with an R* in this Course Guide).

Full details on eligibility can be found at www.education.gov.uk or at www.skillsfundingagency.bis.gov.uk or contact the College’s Learner Services. Concessions may be available on courses marked with a R in this Guide.

If you qualify for tuition fee remission, a copy of the evidence showing that you fall within the approved remission categories must be obtained and attached to your learning agreement in order that the appropriate tuition fee remission may be claimed by us from the relevant agency.

There may still be external registration and/or material fees to pay depending on the course studied - these are NOT subject to a reduction. Please contact Learner Services for further details or if you have any queries.

Anyone applying for a full-time or part-time course and who will be in receipt of funding must supply one of the following forms of ID: Relationship with school, Passport, Driving Licence, ID Card or other form of national identification, National Insurance card, Certificate of Entitlement to Funding, Bank/Credit/Debit card.

Employer Financing: We are able to invoice employers on production of a completed Fee Authorised Form FA1 (or FA2 form for companies who are

booking more than one employee onto a course) available from Learner Services, together with completed enrolment forms for each employee. Payment by employers can also be made by company cheque or credit card together with the forms as above.

Refunds: Refunds will not be made to students who, having enrolled, find the course unsuitable or are unable to attend, as these matters should be determined prior to enrolling. There will be no refunds for withdrawal from a one term course, regardless of circumstance. Any refund that is granted due to exceptional circumstances will be subject to a standard retention fee of 20% of the total course fee. Information and a Refund Application Form can be obtained from

Learner Services.

Additional Fees (marked E, R or C in this Course Guide): Some examination and certification fees have been included in the prices listed and must be

paid when enrolling, however exam fees on some courses are extra and are payable when entering or registering for an exam. For further information the College Examination Officers can be contacted at Evesham on (01386) 712604 or at Malvern on (01684) 584552.

Materials and Equipment (marked M in this Course Guide): Some courses require the use of specialist materials or equipment which may incur additional costs. You will be advised of this when you enrol. Students are advised not to purchase additional items until they are sure that the class will be running.

Attendance and Withdrawals: Course subsidies to the College are withdrawn if a student fails to attend. The College will assume you have left a course if you

fail to attend for 4 consecutive weeks. At that point your place may be allocated to another student. If you know you may be absent but wish to continue your attendance at a later date, or if you wish to leave your course, please inform the Course Tutor in writing.

Course Cancellations: Minimum student numbers are required for courses to run. The College reserves the right to cancel or combine a course due to

insufficient recruitment and will aim to give a minimum of 3 days' notice. Students may be offered the opportunity to transfer to a similar course which may be at a different time or day, or request a refund.

The College very much regrets having to cancel courses at short notice - please help us to avoid this by enrolling no later than 7 days before the start of your chosen course.

Full details and information on all of the above can be obtained from Learner Services.

General information leaflets on issues such as Course Fees and Financial Assistance are available from Learner Services.

Discretionary Support Funds: Any student on a Government funded course experiencing financial difficulties can apply for means-tested Discretionary Support Funds to help towards the cost of course related expenses such as registered childcare, travel, books, exams and equipment.
