No, it’s not Captain America’s luggage! It’s the Superstar Sample Case – just like the one Dan Moore won when he sold books in college. This hard plastic, patriotic-looking sample case was the predecessor to the sample bags. It had about a decade long run from 1972-1982. In 1982, Southwestern made the move from the hard cases to bags.

LEE’S MOTIVATIONAL MOJO Now, just for you English majors (and you English major wanna-bes), here are some leadership insights from William Shakespeare: “The readiness is all.” --Hamlet, Act V, Scene 2 [Live prepared.] “Oh, the blood more stirs to rouse a lion than to start a hare!” --Henry IV, Act I, Scene 3 [Major projects call for major commitment. And resounding energy!] “Why hast thou not visited Lee’s sales blog at swsalestalk.com? Thou art a cur!” --Richard II, Act I, Scene 1 [get online now]

THIS WEEK IN SW RECRUITING HISTORY April 6, 1868 – Prior to the first Sales School, founder Rev. J.R. Graves was plotting the first Southwestern sales locality in, well… any location that was within walking and horse-riding distance from Nashville or had a train station.

Mr. M’s Corner

Dear Mr. M: How do I work with cold prospects to get them back? Mr. M: I always call them every five minutes and quickly hang up if I get their voice mail. This shows I care enough to want to talk to them, but am courteous to not fill their voice mail – yet caller ID shows it’s me. I will then go to where they live and stake out the place. Once I know they are home, I’ll knock on the door until they answer. When they answer, I’ll say something like, “Oh, I guess you haven’t heard about me… I’m the one who you’ll be thanking after the summer is over.” Then I’ll wipe my feet, reach for an imaginary bag – never making eye contact – and step towards the door to come in. Works like a charm! 3

Hero profile What were your parents initial thoughts? My mom was skeptical at first. She didn’t support me that much because I didn’t have any money and everything went so fast! My sister was skeptical too. But this summer, she will join me in the bookfield ! What is your biggest personal accomplishment with SW? Wait and see… I’m just getting started !

Name: Remo Jõeorg University attend/Major: Estonian Entrepreneurship University of Applied Sciences/ Financial Management How many summers have you sold? 2 summers: Montana and Atlanta, GA

What has recruiting a team taught you so far? After my first summer I thought “hell yeah!” I’m skilled, smart and ready to rock! But now after recruiting a 10 person team, I see that I was a kid last year. I have learned so much about people, how to connect with them, how to work with them, how to motivate others. Also, how to recruit my sister - that mission seemed to be hopeless. I have learned to learn. If somebody says you can’t do it, smile and keep working, and seriously, don’t ever give up!

What is your motivation for building a team? Working around 2,000 hours door-to-door, I have seen every kind of family and have learned lots about life. I know I don’t want to be some What is your biggest personal average dude who will live a life that is boring accomplishment outside of SW? Hmm... and count every penny I have in my wallet. I want maybe 4 gold and 2 silver medals in athletics to live a life that is worth living. I will buy my own in International competition in Holland. apartment in two years, a house in 5-6 years and another for my mom. She has always wanted it. I What was your first thought when presented the opportunity to go to the U.S. want to live great life so I can tell to my grandkids one day. Work hard, study hard and think big to run a business through SW? When I first and SW will make all your dreams come true. heard about Southwestern, I was getting out Everybody wants to be remembered. This is your of the army and moved to Tallinn. I was like “yeah... probably not for me.” I wasn’t studying chance to change somebody’s life and write your name into their memories forever. at university, didn’t have an apartment, any work and any money. That was 2009. But when I heard more about the opportunities that SW What’s the hardest part of recruiting and how provides, I really wanted to participate. Others do you overcome it? I think failing. I have worked have been successful, so I thought I would be so much and approached some people up to 10 times and still mess it up! I have had a couple of too! days when I get home where my brain just isn’t How many people have you recruited for your team this year? 10

working. I can’t imagine how much more of a mess I can create or fail in something that I do. But that’s the way it is. There is no way I can learn something new and lasting if it was easy. To achieve big goals, we must pay the price. That’s not possible if the best things come easy. I am happy to see myself smashed down and struggling because I know failure is temporary but success happens with perseverance.

What do you do when you are not building a team? I’m having a good time with my beautiful girlfriend Mari! I like to chill out in different restaurants and places where I have never been. I used to play lots of sports before. Now, I have more future-oriented hobbies. Most of my running is done in summer time between houses. I love snowboarding and all kinds of adrenalin activities.

Any other words of advice? Be willing to pay the What’s the easiest part of recruiting for you? price for you’re success. Doesn’t matter what we do The easiest part for me is selecting people. - once you master the skill, you will start enjoying When I sit down with a prospect and go it ! Thank you Janar Saviir and Jaak Roosaare for through interviews I can see pretty quickly if I doing such a great job! Thank you for helping me want to work with this person and does he/she and being awesome leaders! Leguar! Estonians have the spirit. If we don’t connect, no worries, rock!!! ;) maybe they will connect with some other manager or SW is just not for them. Anyway I know deep in my heart that SW is great thing to do, and everybody should do it.

The 11th Hour What’s the 11th Hour? It’s the last minute. It’s when you feel you are all out of time. It’s just before your deadline, the 12th Hour. Do you really wanna know what it is? It’s the time you should be finishing strong. It’s the moments before you hit the finish line. It’s the time right before Sales School. Finishing strong in building your team is much like finishing strong on the bookfield. It starts with an attitude. When you have a positive attitude and are committed to both meeting and beating your goals… your are an uncontrollable force. Here’s some tips to have a powerful team with a few late, 11th Hour editions: 1) 2) 3) 4)

Decide you are going to do it… then do it. You are capable of doing some amazing things. If you decide to finish strong (or start late), you will be successful. What’s more, the person you recruit to may be very successful. Ask your first-years to recommend their friends. Everyone knows someone… if you have not fully tapped into your first-year’s contacts, then what are you waiting for? Ask your parents to recommend their friends children in your hometown. You may have a Top First Year come form your very own hometown. If someone was not working to the very end, these DSMs and Sales Directors may not have been recruited:

Tim Ritzer, Apr. 24, 1986 Kevin Johnson, Apr. 7, 1993 Lester Crafton, Mar. 18, 1996 Andres Martin, May 16, 2001 Brandon Devlin, Apr. 9, 2001 Michael Ford, Apr. 2, 2003

Nate Vogel, Apr. 28, 1988 Ron Alford, May 17, 1994 Matt Ross, Apr. 8, 1997 Kertu Martin, May 16, 2001 Jaak Roosaare, Apr. 6, 2002 Sheridan McDonald, Mar. 29, 2004

EMPLOYEE PROFILE Name: Donna Leone Title: Credit & Receivables Manager How long with SW? I’m currently in my 34th year Did you ever think you would be here that long? Actually, no! My goal after graduating High School was to work at SW long enough to save money to buy a car, then go to school…but I’m on my 4th car, and the rest is history. I absolutely love my job. What makes it worth staying at SW? The students and the employees. I’ve met some of the most amazing, wonderful people in my years here. My life is richer because of it. Where are you originally from? Youngstown, Ohio So, what all does the Remittance Office do? We take care of our students’ money! Credit card payments, checks, cash…we make sure everything is posted promptly & accurately to their accounts. We also coordinate the scanning of all Order/Remittance slips, work the credit card companies for inquires, and disburse cash to students in Sales School and at Checkout. Favorite part of job? Getting to meet another student, another employee. I love people! Least favorite part? Explaining credit card chargebacks…I hate it for the students. What is one thing that makes you smile each day you get up to come to work? That God gave me another opportunity to make a small difference in someone’s life. What’s the most inspirational thing you have been a part of with SW? Giving the students their checks at Checkout. The excitement is contagious! But even more than that, having witnessed firsthand the HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS order copies that come through our office…Wow! It has truly made me realize the countless hours of hard work & dedication behind each & every order. Something no one else knows about you? My Grandfather helped build the Empire State Building…I have an Uncle in the Mafia…Some mornings you just might hear Metallica blasting thru my car stereo. Hobbies? Spending time with my Family & my Friends, Interior Decorating, Cooking, Flower Growing, Random road trips, Reading, Girls Night with my 3 Sisters

How to Help a Chilly First Year - Lee McCroskey By now, if you’ve done any recruiting, you’ve probably experienced a first year student who opens the conversation with, “We need to talk…” He’s probably not going to tell you how excited he is about the summer, nor is he going to tell you all about his big goals. Nope, he’s changed his mind. Now what do you do at this point? Here are 5 steps you can take to impact him positively and get him to rethink his position:

1) First, check your attitude. Is your Remember, FEAR is the main reason emotional bank account overdrawn? Are you prone to getting angry or ripping him a new one? This won’t help. You might feel better, but he won’t be on your team. Take a deep breath and decide to be helpful.

2) Listen. Ask what happened. “Tell

your friend is freezing (wow, it rhymes): • Fear of failure • Fear of missing out on something • Fear of making a wrong decision • Fear of the unknown

4) Identify with his fear—“I know how

you feel.” Tell your story! Use analogies me more…” Be patient. Don’t just dive he can understand—from his context. in with solutions or arguments. 5) Request he sit through another info session. Most people forget 50% 3) Let him off the hook. Tell him, of what they hear in 24 hours. If he has “Josh, this is totally your decision. If forgotten why he was excited in the first this is not something you want to place, he needs to hear the facts again. do, that’s fine. I hope we can still be An additional info session will do more friends even if you don’t sell books.” 10

finals week at Western Washington University. “If you sit through the first part of Although that didn’t give the info session, hear all the facts me much time to get again, and still don’t feel like this is for you—fine, we can talk more then.” the money together to Remind them why they would do come to Nashville, it was well. Your confidence becomes their enough. And I’m really glad: confidence…. it changed my life forever.

What if nothing works? Leave him

in a good state; be professional. Leave the door open for future conversations. Thank him for his time; wish him success. Sometimes they change their minds: my fifth team member turned himself around after his other internship fell through and he rejoined my fledgling team that summer in April. These people make excellent prospects in the fall!

So don’t be discouraged or upset

or downcast when a team member gets chilly. Just do your best to put their interests first and good things can happen.

-Nate Vogel - Sales Director I was interviewed during finals weeks back in the day…in fact, I was in the last interview of the year on campus. Kent Anderson interviewed 8, signed 3, one showed in Sales School. Me. My last final exam was on Friday, I drove to Wichita, played the last gig with my band until midnight, got my hair cut at 1:00 a.m., joined the car caravan at 7:00 a.m. the next morning heading to Sales School. The rest, as they say, is history… - Lee McCroskey - Marketing 11

DORM GOURMET

Ingredients

2 pounds (12 to 15 per pound) shrimp in the shell 3 tablespoons good olive oil 2 tablespoons dry white wine Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 12 tablespoons (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature 4 teaspoons minced garlic (4 cloves) 1/4 cup minced shallots 3 tablespoons minced fresh parsley leaves 1 teaspoon minced fresh rosemary leaves 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes 1 teaspoon grated lemon zest 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice 1 extra-large egg yolk 2/3 cup panko (Japanese dried bread flakes) Lemon wedges, for serving

Shrimp Scampi This issue we have a great recipe for shrimp scampi. Don’t let the number of ingredients scare you away! This is really easy and your friends will be super-impressed you have become such the chef!

Directions

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Peel, devein, and butterfly the shrimp, leaving the tails on. Place the shrimp in a mixing bowl and toss gently with the olive oil, wine, 2 teaspoons salt, and 1 teaspoon pepper. Allow to sit at room temperature while you make the butter and garlic mixture. In a small bowl, mash the softened butter with the garlic, shallots, parsley, rosemary, red pepper flakes, lemon zest, lemon juice, egg yolk, panko, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon of pepper until combined. Starting from the outer edge of a 14-inch oval gratin dish, arrange the shrimp in a single layer cut side down with the tails curling up and towards the center of the dish. Pour the remaining marinade over the shrimp. Spread the butter mixture evenly over the shrimp. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes until hot and bubbly. If you like the top browned, place under a broiler for 1 minute. Serve with lemon wedges. 12
