On 2 September 2018 Jim Payne and Tim Gardner flew the Airbus Perlan II aircraft to a new glider altitude record of 76,000 ft in a stratospheric mountain wave above the Andes in southern Argentina. The Society of Flight Test Engineers awarded the Perlan Project the Flight Test Team of the Year, and Jim Payne was named the Test Pilot of the Year.
