Multifaceted contribution at a glance National academy award winner Painter-muralist: He has regularly painted, and held exhibitions in India and abroad and has been reviewed extensively in both print and electronic media.

Designer of Chokh Dhani village resorts: Has been engaged in break through phenomenal fantasy Architectural projects of Resorts in ethnic and vernacular styles like Chokhi Dhani in Jaipur and five other projects in Hyderabad, Rajkot, Jodhpur, Udaipur and Dausa.

Cultural activist, he has been engaging himself in various meaningful activities: As state coordinator of SPIC MACAY dedicated himself to preservation and the propagation Art and Culture for more than a decade with his active associations with, Jaipur Virasat Festival and village cultural Tourism,


Academic Administrator : Served as a senior university Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts and has also officited university administration as member of V.C .Committee. He has relentlessly worked for the establishment of a full- fledged faculty of Fine arts with the introduction of full time professional program in the state.

Academician and Researcher: He has taken various initiatives for the transformation of the cultural scenario through writing articles, feasibility reports and interactive discussions.

After seeking his doctoral research degree, he has supervised more than two dozen scholars for their Ph.D research.


Educational Background : He had secured his post graduate degree in Visual Arts/Painting from Agra University in 1963 and Ph.D Doctoral Degree on ‘Treatment of Space in Miniature Paintings of Rajasthan’ in 1984

Others Areas of Study and Research : Inter-disciplinary studies in Fundamentals of Fine Arts. Aesthetics of Visual Arts. Historiography of Art. Communication through Folk-Art Forms Identification of fresh and emerging areas of studies and research

Teaching Experience and Research Supervision: Under Graduate and Post Graduate level more than three decades. He has supervised more than two dozen scholars for their Ph.D research.

Professional Career as an Artist: First successful Solo Exhibition in 1967, AIFACS, New Delhi. There after held 13 Solo and Joint Exhibitions with the Artist wife, Meena Mehta in India and Abroad.


All his shows have been extensively featured and reviewed by the Print & Electronic Media. Participation in State Level, Zonal Level and National Level and International level Art Exhibitions. Participation in State level, National level Artists Camps. Invited by the State University of New York in 1977 for a successful lecture-Demonstration and Exhibition Programme.


Prof. Chinmay Mehta has been honoured with the National Academy Award in 43 rd National Exhibition of Lalit kala akademy New Delhi in 2001.

Designer of Village Resorts and Shilpgrams :

Started with designing Exhibition pavilions.

Ethnic Resorts and Restaurants notably CHOKHI DHANI, Jaipur, DHOLA RI DHANI in Hyderabad, CHOUKI Dhani Rajkot, Nirali Dhani Jodhpur,Ambar Vilas, opposite to Choukhi Dhani ,Jaipur Gramin Haat Dausa ( Shilpgram ) in Sawaimadhopur and Jhunjhnu. Roopalo Ravalo, just opposite Air port Udaipur


Organizational and Other Academic contributions: Seriously been involved in conceiving, planning and establishing a full-fledged Faculty of Fine Arts in the University of Rajasthan, Jaipur. He has been involved in drafting various innovative curriculum and instituted Professional B.V.A, M.V.A and B.MUS and M.MUS Degree Courses . P.G. Diploma and Post-Graduation Course in Television Programme Production for the first time in the State of Rajasthan. Drafted the Feasibility Report of Seedling Academy of Design, Technology and Management which has later on attained the status of university in Jaipur.

Some prestigious assignments and associations : Chairman, Rajathan Lalit Kala Academy ,Jaipur Chairperson, AAYAM- Institute of Art and Culture, Jaipur Member of UGC’s Panel on Fine Arts, Art History and many other important UGC committees. Vice-President of Indian Music Congress. Chairperson-Co-coordinatorState Chapter SPIC MACAY. for a period of 10 years Member of the committee on applied arts and crafts All India Board of Architecture and Applied Arts (constituted by AICTE Act 1987)

Participated in National / International Level Seminars and Symposia. Member of High Power Committee constituted for beautification of Interior and Exterior of New Vidhan Sabha building in Jaipur. Member of General Council and Executive Board, Central Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi. Member of General Council Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi. Member Governing body of West Zone Cultural Center, Udaipur and Membership of several other Cultural and Academic Bodies

A GENIUS SUI GENERIS IN ART, DESIGN AND ACADEMICS

It is always fascinating to know people who carve a niche for themselves and Professor Chinmay Mehta is no exception. He was a Professor and Dean, Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Rajasthan,Jaipur (India ). But that is not all, he has other talents as well. He is multi-media Painter and Designer of Large size Mural (wall Paintings ) and Fantasy Resorts in ethnic and indigenous style. Not only exceptionally well read, he himself is an experienced author, writing prolifically on Art,Culture and Aesthetics.

Education : Born in 1942 in a town near Udaipur, he obtained his postgraduation in Visual Arts (Painting) in 1963. He had his Doctors in Philosophy in Fine Arts on his research project : Treatment of Space in Miniature Paintings of Rajasthan : He has been teaching Painting, Art History and Aesthetics at the graduation as well as post-graduation levels. He has also been supervising research on various subjects and twenty scholars have so far been awarded Ph.D. under his supervision. He has also been associated with the evaluation of Ph.D. and D.Litt. Dissertations of several Universities.

Artist turned Architectural Designer : As one of the very distinghuished Painter turned Environmantal


Designer,he has designed and executed large size Exhibition Pavilions and famous theme resorts notably —Chokhi Dhani, Jaipur Dhola ri Dhani in Hyderabad, and similar other projects, Rajkot, Jodhpur. He is also designing a unique Village Haat/shilpagrams in Dausa,Jhunjhnuand Sawai madhopur. With this, he will be known as a rare Designer of Ethnic and Vernacular architecture in our country. He uses his wide experience and artistic insight to bring about a fresh perspective to any project he undertakes. While pursuing varied interests, he values honesty and loyalty most.

As professional painter and Mural designer: For last forty years he has been holding solo and joint shows that have been applauded by both media and the connoisseurs of art throughout the world He was invited by the State University of New York in 1977 for a successful lecture demonstration and exhibition programme. His large size Murals are significantly contributing to the charm and elegance of prominent public places. He is a ceaseless experimenterof new techniques of art and a conscious artist who works with a mission and purpose. He has been honored with the National Academy award at its 43 rd. National Exhibition of Art in Bangalore. He participated in the National Senior Artists’ Camp organized by the Central Lalit Kala Academy to observe the 70th birth anniversary of eminent painter Sh. B.C.Sanyal. As a distinguished scholar and Painter, he has been invited to several prestigious symposiums and workshps in India and abroad.He was invited by the State University of New York in 1977 for a successful lecture demonstration and exhibition programme. His large size Murals are significantly contributing to the charm and elegance of prominent public places. privilege of organising All India Painters’ Camp in Jaisalmer. Professor Mehta was a member of the Task Force for Triennial International Exhibition organised by the Central Lalit Kala Academy. He was also a member of its high level committee on Art Education. He has recently been to Dhaka (Bangaladesh ) as Commissioner of the Indian section at Asian Art Biennale and speaker at the International symposium on Indigenous Art: tradition: Identity and challenges where he has also participated in the International Artists workshop.He has designed and executed exhibition pavilions and theme resorts and restaurants notably —Chokhi Dhani, Jaipur and similar other projects in Hyderabad and Rajkot. With this he will be known as a rare exponent of Ethnic and Vernacular architecture in our country. He uses his wide experience and artistic insight to bring about a fresh perspective to any project he undertakes. While pursuing varied interests, he values honesty and loyalty most. Prof. Mehta has been a member of the U.G.C” s panel on Fine arts and Art History and many other U.G.C committees, Vice President of Indian Music Congress, coordinator of the state chapter SPIC MACAY, to mention a few of his deserved associations. His chief associations and prestigious assignments are that he has been a member and conveyer of the U.G.C.’s visiting committee that has been constituted to recommend the financial allocation for the 9th Plan for the following two Universities: like Rabindra Bharati University,Calcutta.and I.K.S. Vishwavidhyalaya, Khairagarh.He has been a member of several selection committees of a number of prominent institutions and Universities ,namely ,B.H.U, Allahabad, Kurukshetra, Khairagarh and Kumanyu and the Union Public Service Commission, New Delhi and Rajasthan Public Service Commission, Ajmer. He has been associated with the High Power Committee constituted for the beautification of the interior and exterior of new Vidhan Sabha building in Jaipur.


Academic Leadership :

He has been the sole spirit behind the development of the first full- fledged Faculty of Fine Arts with the introduction of BFA and MFA degree courses in Rajasthan. His long experience of heading the Department of Painting and the Faculty of Fine Arts for more than four successive terms as Dean and Coordinator testifies to his administrative acumen. Out of his varied observation and reading, he has acquired unusual wisdom that entitles him to play the role of an artist, academic writer and an administrator with equal competence. He has also served as a member of the Vice -Chancellor’s Committee for officiating him in his absence. He has been keenly interested in Curriculum Designing and has led the drafting of syllabi of B.F.A, M.F.A and P.G. degree and diploma in Tele-Film production, instituted for the first time in Rajasthan. He has been entrusted U.G.C.’s major research project on: Study of Regional Art Forms (Visual and Performing) of Rajasthan to evolve and design Rural Communication concepts and programmes. He has participated in the National Symposium on What Have the Arts in Common jointly organised by the Indira Gandhi Centre for Arts and Dhvanyaloka in Mysore. (2nd to 5th June,1993 ).As a rare amalgam of academics with art he defies definition of his personality : a greater artist or an academician. It looks pretty much the same. He has come a long way. His work deserves to be evaluated according to high standards.
