Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Cead Mile Failte to You All to the Seventh Annual Cape Cod Saint Patrick’s Parade Welcome to the 7th Annual Cape Cod St. Patrick’s Parade. The Cape Cod St. Patrick’s Parade Committee is comprised of volunteers who work tirelessly and donate countless hours to help ensure that this parade continues to grow and improve so that you, your families, and friends will continue to enjoy this event. We would like to thank the Town of Yarmouth’s Tourism Preservation Fund for believing in us and supporting our efforts to bring thousands of people to the Mid-Cape area to help us celebrate St. Patrick and the coming of spring. While you look through this parade book please take note of the many businesses which have supported the parade. This support makes it possible for us to fund the parade. Please take the time to visit the establishments that advertise in the parade book and help us say thank you. It is with great pride and admiration that we introduce this year’s Grand Marshal “Team Hoyt.” Team Hoyt is the father son team of Dick Hoyt, and his son, Rick, who compete together in marathons and triathlons across the country. Please visit teamhoyt.com to learn more about this truly inspirational team. Team Hoyt’s message “Yes You Can!” is universal and their accomplishments are inspiring. It is with great pride that we welcome Rick and Dick to lead this year’s parade as Grand Marshal. Please join them this year at the Boston Marathon and let’s cheer them on as they compete in their 30th Boston Marathon! This year’s parade will also feature The 2011 DY Dolphin Super Bowl Champs. Our championship team will be joined by the DY band and the schools fantastic group of cheerleaders. Help us applaud the team’s success. Lastly, every committee needs someone who is willing to take on the lions share of the work. This committee is no different. As co-chairs of this parade, Mairead and I are asked to consider who should receive the Chairman’s Award. This choice was a simple one. Brenda Donovan has stepped up every year and has become the go to person when it comes to putting together not only this parade book but tending to our website and taking care of other tasks which are vital to the success of this parade. On behalf of the entire parade committee it is with great respect and enthusiasm that we announce Brenda Donovan as the recipient of this years Chairman’s Award. Thank you Brenda for all that you do. On behalf of the entire Parade Committee we welcome you to this year’s parade and cordially invite you to attend many others. Next Year’s Parade will be held Saturday March 9, 2013. Until then you can help us in a number of ways. You can visit our website and make a small donation which coupled with others will be a huge help. For those of you on Facebook, please visit our Facebook page and both “like us” and invite all of your friends to do the same. God Bless you all, be safe, and enjoy the 7th Annual Cape Cod St. Patrick’s Parade God Bless you all, Co-Chairs: Mairead McCann and John Fallon www.capecodstpatsparade.com

The Shillelagh that starts our Cape Cod Saint Patrick’s Parade is steeped in tradition. As a young woman, Mary O’Sullivan of Dingle Town, County Kerry, left Queenstown at the age of fifteen. The only family heirloom she had was her grandfather’s Shillelagh. Her grandson, a Parade Committee member, asked her why she always carried that thorny stick around? Her reply was simple, but articulate. When she walked down the gangway at Ellis Island, just before she stepped on American soil, she took the Shillelagh and tapped the ground three times, then started her new life. Her grandson asked her about the tapping and why three times. She stated, “I tapped once for the green, once for the white, and once for the gold.” She continued “I had to leave Ireland behind, but I brought the spirit of Ireland with me.” This same Shillelagh starts our Parade with three taps by our Grand Marshall; once for the green, once for the white and once for the gold. Thank you, Mary Sullivan. Your spirit has become part of the Cape Cod St. Patrick’s Parade tradition.

Jake O’Rourke Jake is a veteran of the US Marine Corp, who nobly served his country during the Korean War. His service included the Inchon Invasion, and the Chosin Reservoir Campaign, where our troops faced one of the worst winters in 50 years. Thus the name “Frozen Chosin”. Despite the horrific conditions of weather and terrain, Jake and his division fought an epic battle, turning back the enemy, and bringing their many wounded and deceased back to safety. Upon returning from the war, & his Honorable Discharge from the USMC, Jake attended and graduated from Suffolk University in Boston. Jake is presently the Commander of the Korean War Veterans here on Cape Cod. He is a member of the Marine Corps League Detachment 955, and remains active in the American Legion, VFW, and the AmVets Post 333. He is also happily married with 3 children. He is a strong believer in the motto, “Once a Marine, Always a Marine.”

2012 Colleen Pageant Finalists

The Sons of Erin Cape Cod and the Cape Cod St. Patrick’s Parade Committee awards scholarships to local female high school seniors of Irish descent. The Colleen winner (Queen) will receive a $1,000 scholarship, and the three runner-up court winners will receive a $500 scholarship each. The Sons of Erin and the Parade Committee would like to thank Heart of Stone for their true Heart of Gold and generous donation towards the Colleen Scholarship Fund.

Eliza Bowes Lucey Gorrill

Lucey is a senior at Barnstable High School. She is looking forward to attending Holy Cross or the University of Massachusetts in the fall as a history major. Lucey is excited about studying abroad in the United Kingdom. She is a member of the National Honor Society and Latin Honors Society. Athletically, she participates at the varsity level in track and field, cross country, and on the swim team. Lucey’s volunteer activities have included helping out at Our Lady of Victory Christmas fair and assuming the role of assistant coach for the Cape Cod Harriers Running Club. Lucey summarized her Irish heritage when she said, “Being half Irish means more to me than just having easily burnt skin and a multitude of freckles. It is an accumulation of little things; a fascination with an ancient culture, an integration of customs into daily life, and a namesake which make my Irish heritage so important to me.”

Emily Brouillette

Emily is a senior attending Harwich High School. She will be attending Emmanuel College in the fall as an education major. Emily has excelled academically as evidenced by her honor roll status and success in her AP and honors classes. She is very active beyond the classroom with activities that include yearbook editor, peer mediator, class Treasurer, four years of varsity tennis, and Key Club. Her community involvement has included the Walk for Alzheimer’s, and Walk for Hunger. Emily enjoys spending her spare time with her family. In her essay she wrote, “Growing up in an Irish family has influenced my life significantly. My love of my Irish heritage comes from my grandfather because he took pride in his heritage and learned important values at an early age.”

34

Eliza is a senior at Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School. She will be attending the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth in the fall as a music major. Eliza is an accomplished / talented fiddle player and Scottish Highland Dancer. Her guidance counselor said it best, “When Eliza performs, it brings out some of her best qualities- she is self-assured and composed while remaining humble.” She is a member of the National Honor Society, Chamber Orchestra, and Career Day Committee. Eliza has been a valued member of the volleyball team for four years and was named co-captain her senior year. She has won numerous awards in fiddle playing and Scottish Highland dance, and also took the initiative to teach fiddle to younger children after school. Eliza’s Irish heritage will be constant as she said, “I plan to keep my ethnicity alive through my music and dance, making sure my family is part of my present and future.”

Meaghan Callahan

Meaghan is a senior at Harwich High School. She would like to attend Boston College in the fall as a political science major. Meaghan is the president of the National Honor Society and ranks third in her class academically. She combines an intense academic drive with a warm personality, and excels outside the academic arena by being a member of the select choir, captain of the sailing team, member of the mock trial team and an accomplished violinist. She has been able to take four trips to Ireland, and especially enjoyed that time spent with extended family. Her community service has included the Walk for Hunger, and Cranberry Harvest Pancake Breakfast. As quoted in her essay, “My red hair is from my grandmother, my singing voice from my Great-Aunt Kathleen, my love of ice cream is from my grandfather and my determination is from all my relatives that were brave enough to start their lives in a new country.”

The Cape Cod St. Patrick’s Parade Committee is pleased to have

“Team Hoyt” as the 7th Parade Grand Marshal Rick was born in 1962 to Dick and Judy Hoyt. As a result of oxygen deprivation to Rick’s brain at the time of his birth, Rick was diagnosed as a spastic quadriplegic with cerebral palsy. Dick and Judy were advised to institutionalize Rick because there was no chance of him recovering, and little hope for Rick to live a “normal” life. This was just the beginning of Dick and Judy’s quest for Rick’s inclusion in community, sports, education and one day, the workplace. Dick and Judy soon realized that though Rick couldn’t walk or speak; he was quite astute and his eyes would follow them around the room. They fought to integrate Rick into the public school system, pushing administrators to see beyond Rick’s physical limitations. Dick and Judy would take Rick sledding and swimming, and even taught him the alphabet and basic words, like any other child. After providing concrete evidence of Rick’s intellect and ability to learn like everyone else, Dick and Judy needed to find a way to help Rick communicate for himself. With $5,000 in 1972 and a skilled group of engineers at Tufts University, an interactive computer was built for Rick. This computer consisted of a cursor being used to highlight every letter of the alphabet. Once the letter Rick wanted was highlighted, he was able to select it by just a simple tap with his head against a head piece attached to his wheelchair. When the computer was originally first brought home, Rick surprised everyone with his first words. Instead of saying, “Hi, Mom,” or “Hi, Dad,” Rick’s first “spoken” words were: “Go, Bruins!” It was clear from that moment on, that Rick loved sports and followed the game just like anyone else. In 1975, at the age of 13, Rick was finally admitted into public school. After high school, Rick attended Boston University, and he graduated with a degree in Special Education in 1993. Dick retired in 1995 as a Lt. Colonel from the Air National Guard, after serving his country for 37 years. The Beginning of Team Hoyt In the spring of 1977, Rick told his father that he wanted to participate in a 5-mile benefit run for a Lacrosse player who had been paralyzed in an accident. Far from being a long-distance runner, Dick agreed to push Rick in his wheelchair and they finished all 5 miles, coming in next to last. That night, Rick told his father, “Dad, when I’m running, it feels like I’m not handicapped.” This realization was just the beginning of what would become over 1,000 races completed, including marathons, duathlons and triathlons (6 of them being Ironman competitions). Also adding to their list of achievements, Dick and Rick biked and ran across the U.S. in 1992, completing a full 3,735 miles in 45 days. In a triathlon, Dick will pull Rick in a boat with a bungee cord attached to a vest around his waist and to the front of the boat for the swimming stage. For the biking stage, Rick will ride a special two-seater bicycle, and then Dick will push Rick in his custom made running chair (for the running stage). Rick was once asked, if he could give his father one thing, what would it be? Rick responded, “The thing I’d most like is for my dad to sit in the chair and I would push him for once.” The 2009 Boston Marathon was officially Team Hoyt’s 1000th race. Rick always says if it comes down to doing one race a year he would like it to be the Boston Marathon: his favorite race. Dick Hoyt hopes that he is able to push Rick in the Boston Marathon when he is 70 years old (2011)! Neither Dick or Rick are ready to retire yet.
