'Not all those who wander are lost' - Tolkien Within just a few minutes at Sarehole Mill you will find yourself wandering back in time to the enchanted world of Tolkien’s youth. One of only two working mills left in Birmingham, this slightly forgotten treasure has over the past year been restored to its former glory. A lot of love and elbow grease have brought it back into working order. Dedicated volunteers and museum staff keep the mill maintained. On special baking days you’ll find it a sweet little hive of activity, with the large waterwheel turning, the outdoor clay bread oven smoking away with fresh ‘tasting’ loaves cooking inside, children playing in the courtyard, and stepping out of the back door, the mill pond is just as serene as it is depicted in the original artwork in the displays inside the mill. Curator Irene de Boo said: “The mill now charges a small entry fee, but if you just want to walk around the mill pond or pop into our quaint little tea shop for tea and cake then you are more than welcome. The car park is free and it is quite nice to include a wander round the mill pond as part of a walk along the River Cole or Moseley Bog.” You can find an itinerary of upcoming events below, but you don’t need to be limited to these

dates. The surrounding nature trails transport you to the magical world created by Tolkien in his world famous books ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings’, so why not have an explore? A home from home Making the move from living in their own home to living in a care home for the elderly is often steeped in emotion and one of the biggest decisions you may need to make for your parents. Fortunately there are some attractive and well run places on our doorstep to choose from. Bryony House stands in beautiful gardens in the pleasant green and leafy suburb of Bournville, one of the most desirable residential areas of Birmingham. Providing supported living for up to 35 elderly people with high standards of accommodation and support, Bryony House sits somewhere around the middle of the price range. Trustee David Loveday commented: “Bryony House was established in 1955, with one very clear objective; to create a home within a home for every resident. The house is an independent not-forprofit charity and therefore is not committed to providing a profit for proprietors or shareholders. We have an extremely stable staff base - one of our carers recently retired after 30 years service and we have several members of staff who have been with us for over ten years. This makes for a warm, welcoming and homely environment. Friendly, helpful and qualified staff are on duty round the clock to assist residents with their personal needs. Privacy and independence are

respected and residents are free to come and go as they please. Residents also have the benefit of a visiting hairdresser and chiropodist, as well as opportunities for regular social events and activities. Day-to-day care is supervised by the care manager and senior staff. Should nursing care be required a district nurse will be asked to visit, and local doctors visit if and when needed. The Friends of Bryony, a group of volunteers from the nearby neighbourhood, provide a variety of leisure activities. These include themed suppers, music concerts and coffee mornings. If you are interested in having a look around please contact Care Manager Debbie Bennett by telephone or email. View from the showroom balcony

Is your house toasty warm, quiet and difficult to break in to? If so then you have no need to read any further. But if your standard of living could be improved by replacing windows and doors in your home then this might be of interest to you. Double glazing salesmen have a pretty raw deal when it comes to reputation. And that can be hard for the good guys to overcome. Which is why Finesse Windows in Kings Norton have opened a new showroom to demonstrate the quality of their workmanship, overlooking the very factory floor where all their products are made from scratch. If you want windows and doors that scream out quality then go along and have a look for yourself. ‘Any colour as long as it’s white’ is yesterday’s news. The new showroom houses top of the range coloured window and doors in Chartwell Green, cream, black, rosewood, anthracite grey, Irish oak, and the obligatory white. You can also see the gorgeous stained glass windows, encapsulated within triple glazing units so they are easy to clean. They have windows with blinds between the panes of glass that open and close with a magnetic mechanism - also easy to clean. If you want to keep the original period features of your windows Finesse has a

range of monkey tail and tear drop handles that give them that extra special finishing touch. And if you ask them, they will show you a cross section of their doors which demonstrates why they are so much more difficult to break into than conventional double glazing doors. Managing Director Russell Bridge said: “We would like people to see for themselves why we are so proud of the quality of our products. So come and have a look, we don’t bite!” Finesse is a family business and it has been running since 1981.

Email not working? This is one of the biggest nightmares facing small (and big) business these days. Email down time means losing credibility, losing money, wasting time and extreme frustration.

provide cloud hosting, sort out virus problems and a whole host of other useful IT services.

Many business owners believe that it is just the nature of the beast and a cross they have to bear. Rob Savage of Kixo thinks differently.

Kixo can work as an external IT support company for all your requirements or alongside an internal IT person and offers a fixed fee service so that you pay the same amount each month regardless of how many times you call.

Rob said: “We help businesses fix their email so that there is minimal or no downtime - and more importantly we also help to make sure the IT invested in contributes to the bottom line, rather than taking away from it. “We often get called when people are in the middle of a crisis - and sometimes the email has been down for several days. But there is really no reason why even the most severe problem should not be fixed within a matter of hours.” “The technology behind modern email is extremely complex which means there are countless reasons why email stops working. We try to establish where the problem lies by talking it through step by step. This initial call can be just a couple of minutes, yet gives us the vital clues we need to be able to sort out the problem quickly.”

What really makes the team at Kixo stand apart from the vast choice of IT companies is their personal approach. They try to get to know your business really well so that they can help ensure that IT is an asset rather than a constant headache. Tracy Fletcher from the Kitchen Garden Deli

Eat Local I shall just get it out the way and say that I feel incredibly lucky to live and work in such a great place as this corner of Birmingham. A bit more countryside would be nice of course but we have beautiful parks, great independent shops, a brilliant local art scene and a surprisingly interesting night life. For all these reasons, not to mention the strong community of people, when I got the chance to open my own business, this area was the obvious choice. I am passionate about good food and have strong concerns about the environment, so try to make these issues central to my business. Supermarkets have come to play a central part in most of our lives when it comes to buying food. But for something a bit unusual and special, we are particularly well served in Moseley and Kings Heath with local delicatessens, farmers’ markets and street food markets.

At Lewis’s they are passionate about choosing the best tasting British and Mediterranean ingredients to sell for you to cook at home. Lewis loves traditional Italian “slow food” - choosing the best seasonal produce, lovingly preparing it and then spending a relaxed time eating it with friends and family. Nima’s is a truly international deli, opening in Moseley 23 years ago and stocking specialist food from countries around the globe from East to West such as Japan, Iran, Arabia, Thailand, Spain and Germany. Then we have Maison Mayci, made famous by reaching the final in ITV’s Britain’s Best Bakery competition, which hand makes gorgeous French patisserie to rival anything sold in France.

Here at The Kitchen Garden Deli, as well as stocking many homemade items, we also try to support local suppliers where possible.

So why not visit one of your local delicatessens between those trips to the supermarket and treat yourself this weekend.

Indigo is a great independent whole food shop specialising in organic, vegetarian and vegan diets plus stocking a huge range of dietary supplements.

Moseley Arts' Market goes from strength to strength Moseley Arts’ Market is on an all time high. All of the work you find at the market is high quality, handmade and original and the stalls are all run by the artists which means you get to meet the people who have made the work and possibly discuss bespoke work / commissions. The Market happens every fourth Saturday of the month from 9am – 3pm. The next two are 26 April and 24 May.

There are now more stalls than ever with over 30 different local artists showcasing their wares every month. It has become so popular that there is now a waiting list of artists wishing to join the market.

Moseley Arts’ Market has now developed a Birmingham city centre presence. ‘Moseley on the Move’, has teamed up with Colmore Business District to deliver four Friday markets in the beautiful grounds of Birmingham Cathedral. (28th March, 30th May, 26th Sept, 12th Dec).

Supper club at the Deli Moseley’s reputation as one of Birmingham’s best places to eat out is about to be given a further boost with the launch of a new supper club. Lewis of Lewis’s Deli has exciting plans to run a monthly club for people who really take food seriously. Lewis said: “Supper clubs with an emphasis on refined food are really taking off in London. The idea behind ours is to follow a particular food theme each month - and we are beginning with Italian food on 26 April. The food will be made with the finest ingredients and stay true to the style of traditional Italian cuisine. “The supper club is a real communal event. People will all sit together rather than have separate tables. What brings them together is their love of food. “We will transform the deli once a month and put on an evening that will delight the senses. There will be room for just fifteen people so if you want to join the club let us know.”

Keep your best clients It makes good business sense to invest in keeping your best clients and can cost a lot less than chasing and acquiring new ones. That is why corporate hospitality is such a good idea. And it’s fun, too. What would you prefer? A day at the races or endless business networking events, tenders, proposals, or even those dreaded cold calls. And this is where Sarah Jones and her team at HospitalityCo come in. A local firm themselves, they provide the winning formula for helping you keep your best customers happy and sticking with you. You will be welcomed at the venue by your hostess for the day with champagne on arrival, four course lunch, complementary bar, reserved seats, official guest documentation and a post-event buffet or afternoon tea, as well as a visit from a guest speaker. Hospitality packages are not just for the companies of this world; family and friends can also enjoy the thrills and spills of any sporting occasion in VIP style. Call the Midwife - Birmingham's new home-birth team has been launched. Sarah Noble, Consultant Midwife at Birmingham Women’s Hospital is here to tell you that the new home-birth team is up and running and taking bookings. Birmingham South Central NHS commissioners have invested considerable funds into the new home birth team, in a response to a national research study, which showed that mums who have already had a straight forward birth, have a reduced chance of caesarean section and other medical interventions if they choose to have their next baby at home.

all of the team, which means you have a high probability of knowing your midwife in labour.

The advantages of birthing at home include the need for less pain relief, not having to transfer into hospital when labour starts, a lower risk of infection, a more relaxed environment and the use of a birthing pool. You can have as many or few birth partners as you want and the best part of all is during the first few hours of your baby’s life, you can all be together as a family unit, tucked up in your own bed enjoying your first cuddle.

“However unlike the midwives in the 1950’s BBC Drama series, we won’t be arriving on bicycles with a basket on the front, but in cars fully equipped with the latest home-birth kit.”

Sarah said: “We are a small team of friendly, caring and experienced midwifes, who are committed to making your journey through pregnancy, birth and beyond not only safe but an enjoyable experience. We are family centred and offer continuity of care with one midwife and the opportunity to meet

“We appreciate it can be quite stressful coming to a clinic appointment at hospital, so we can come to you, at home and even do early evening appointments or weekend appointments which may be preferable if you are a working parent.

Caring for historic Moseley It all began 35 years ago when a group of residents noticed that a row of period buildings in the centre of Moseley Village had been replaced by an ugly concrete façade. No-one seemed to have noticed the planning application for Tesco (now the Co-op). Since then Moseley Society has closely monitored and responded to development issues. Members of the Moseley Society come from all walks of life. They are not expected to be active, although all kinds of support is welcomed. Past successes include restoring the Icehouse in Moseley Park and Pool, and the Dovecote. Currently, the Moseley Society is recreating an 18th century garden and that would be impossible without a team of volunteers. Members of Moseley Society receive a quarterly newsletter and regular email updates.

If you care about Moseley and would like to join the Moseley Society the membership form is on the website

New 'fellowship of niceness' in Moseley The Birmingham Secular Fellowship is a new non-religious community group which started in Moseley in October 2013. It brings people together for church-like gatherings forming a community that is there for one another. The meetings don’t include religious teachings or practices, instead there are short talks, singing, and spaces for personal reflection. The aim is to create an inspiring and uplifting atmosphere. Topics are diverse, and so far have included astronomy, food, music and charity. The fellowship is open to everybody, and children are welcome. The meetings are once a month on a Sunday, at the Birmingham Buddhist Centre on Park Road in Moseley. They start at 11am with the formal part lasting about an hour, followed by tea, cake and a chance to chat. Entry is free. The next meetings will be on 6 April, 4 May and 1 June.

Secret garden Moseley Park and Pool is Moseley’s very own Secret Garden - 11 acres of beautiful parkland just two miles from the centre of Birmingham. The park is a relic of the estate of Moseley Hall, which was laid out to a design drawn up in the 18th century by the great English landscape designer, Humphry Repton. In February, the Trust submitted a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund for £1.5 million to restore the park, preserving its unique historic, cultural and natural heritage for future generations, and making it accessible to even more people. The main elements of the bid are: to restore the pool, improve the footpaths, build a visitor centre and carry out an archaeological dig to find the site of the original boathouse. The park is a fantastic educational resource, and the visitor centre will have a learning space for schools’ use, which will also be available to community

groups. An exhibition area will bring the history of the park to life, and the Moseley Local History Archive will also have a permanent home in the building. There will be a café for everyone to enjoy, and at last some much needed toilets! The outcome of the bid will be announced at the end of June. In the meantime a number of events are taking place in the Park, starting with an Easter Fun Day on Saturday 26th April – there’ll be an egg rolling competition, a scavenger hunt and lots more. Entry is free and there’ll be prizes!

Let's get moving As part of their Let’s Get Moving campaign, Birmingham Friends of the Earth joined forces with Allens Croft school near Kings Heath to look at air pollution in their area. Poor air quality can have adverse effects on respiratory health and can cause an increase in problems such as asthma. The Let’s Get Moving campaign aims to tackle this by calling for more investment in walking and cycling in order to reduce the main cause - traffic. Friends of the Earth ran sessions in the school to teach children about air pollution. After explaining what air pollution is and the effects it has, they set up an experiment with the children to measure levels of nitrogen dioxide at certain locations in their area over two weeks. This involved putting up small tubes called diffusion tubes designed to measure levels of nitrogen dioxide in the air. The results of the experiment showed levels of air pollution almost at EU legal limits. The results also showed that air pollution was

greater on the busy main roads in the area. However it wasn’t all bad news. During the sessions children came up it ideas to combat the problem, for example by walking and cycling to school, and were very keen to take action. Everyone can help tackle poor air quality by cycling and walking more, and supporting Let’s Get Moving, by signing the petition for more investment in walking and cycling. Schools that would like to take part in Citizen Science and do their bit, please contact Julien Pritchard at You can find out more information about the Let’s Get Moving campaign at

Blooming Moseley This is the 10th year of Moseley in Bloom and the volunteers are raring to go with plans for an even greener and cleaner Moseley. It is also the 50th anniversary of Britain in Bloom and this golden anniversary will be marked by a celebration of Communities ‘Growing for Gold for Pollinators’. All of this will be launched in the week of 14 April. Carol Miller, Chair of Moseley in Bloom, said: “All that we do is totally dependent on sponsorship and fundraising and we are all volunteers. Moseley in Bloom volunteers are currently going round persuading the shops and businesses to sponsor hanging baskets and window boxes. “The generous fundraising event hosted by Priya Restaurant in February raised £1500 for Moseley in Bloom and Moseley Christmas Lights. “Our project to improve Moseley Car Park will continue and now that the large bins have been removed, there are plans to create a new bed in their place. Moseley in Bloom volunteers are now working with Moseley Society volunteers to clean up the Car Park every two weeks. So far over twenty bags of rubbish have been cleared.

“We are working with other groups to reduce litter around the village and plan to have a publicity campaign about this. If litter makes you angry, please come and help us. “Do you have trees in green verges in your street? In some roads, the tree bases have been planted with flowers. Can we encourage this secret ‘guerrilla gardening’ to further brighten up the street scene? As long as it doesn’t interfere with grass mowing, no one will object. “Provided we can confirm enough gardens, we will again have an Open Gardens’ weekend on 28 and 29 June. If you would like to show your garden, please contact us. “Finally, don’t miss our quiz night on 11 April at 7.30pm at Moseley Joint Services Club in Church Road.”

New Neighbourhood Wardens for Moseley & Kings Heath A Moseley charity has unveiled two members of staff who aim to keep the area’s streets clean and safe and to ensure Council services are used if unsightly heaps are sprouting. Moseley Community Development Trust (CDT) has appointed Neighbourhood Wardens to patrol pavements, making sure fly-tipping, graffiti and other anti-social behaviour is reported and to help local people find solutions. Helen Rehman and Philip Osman have been given the job of liaising with the neighbourhood police, City Council and other services to uphold environmental standards. They will also support the work of the Moseley Community Alcohol Partnership to help reduce street drinking and begging.  Tony Thapar, CEO of Moseley CDT, said: “It’s great to have an enthusiastic pair of Wardens who are keen to help residents and traders in the area. With Birmingham City Council reorganising its services, it’s imperative local people find other

ways to keep the neighbourhood clean, green and safe. Helen and Philip have lived in the area for years and are committed to helping people.” Helen is an active member of Moseley C of E Primary School’s PTA and Oz has been active in Kings Heath community groups for several years. Bishop Challoner Art Trail To inspire and push boundaries beyond secondary school art by exploring scale, media and concept. This was the vision of Jo Baptiste when she became Head of Art at Bishop Challoner Catholic College ten years ago. And it has culminated in an exhibition showing diverse disciplines beautifully combining her innovative work with these talented artists and celebrates Birmingham’s creative success. Bishop Challoner will open a unique retrospective exhibition featuring 20 past and present art students and professionals on March 31st, on view until May 2nd. The Art Retrospective will feature 25 works by Birmingham born, up and coming artists, who are currently studying at or have graduated from prestigious art colleges. The artists are now based in Birmingham, London and Paris. The vision ‘to commission Art to be shared with the community’ has culminated in an art trail around the Kings Heath community. The Art Trail is a collaboration between Bishop Challoner, 20 artists and 17 business venues in Kings Heath with the aim to celebrate art with the local community.

A catalogue of exhibitors will support the exhibition including a map of the trail, information on the artists and the pieces they have produced and links to businesses that house the art work, promoting their work and service to the community. The exhibition celebrates a diversity of talent, housing work by painters, photographers, sculptors and installation/performance artists. The public is invited to visit the exhibition venues during normal business hours to view the exhibits and participate in the accompanying competition to win a commission by one of the artists. List of venues involved: All Saints Community Arts (café), Hare and Hounds, Loco Lounge, Kitchen Garden Cafe, Contrasts Florist, Cherry Reds, Manic Organic Café, Fletchers Wine Bar, Kings Heath Library, Headshed, Kings Heath Tea Rooms, Armadillo, People, Shirley Ann Florist, Kings Heath Baptist Church, Maison Mayci and Canvas Frames.

Friday nights at the Highbury Since its refurbishment last year, the Highbury Pub on the borders of Moseley, Kings Heath and Stirchley Village has already attracted many live bands to its beautiful function room and cosy bar, the Highbury Suite. Now a new kind of music event will be a regular monthly feature on Friday nights. “The idea is not to put music into a particular box”, says Dilys Garrod of Professional Music Events, the driving force behind the venture. “One month it will be folk, another jazz, another light classical - just whatever is fun for a Friday evening.” The name of these evenings, Music Unwrapped, gives a further clue to what’s in store. “It will be a really informal setting where you can sit back and have a drink while interacting directly with the musicians,” Dilys explains. “You’ll come away having had a fantastic evening, and also understanding a bit more about the music.” The launch is on Friday 11 April 2014 with Percussion Unwrapped. The prestigious Cymbiotic Duo, who played for Her Majesty the Queen at a glittering reception during her Diamond

Jubilee celebrations, is making a welcome return to South Birmingham. So if you’re not sure what a cajon, a darbuka, crotales or a marimba are, this is your chance to be amazed. The concert is in aid of St Mary’s Hospice – another great reason to make sure you’re there.

Buying or selling property? Then you need the right legal support behind you. In our latest ‘meet the team at Tyndallwoods’ article we meet Ian Butler, a director in the property team, with over 30 years experience in Tyndallwoods footer for use property law. Ian helps residential and commercial clients who are buying, selling, re-financing, extending leases or buying the freehold on properties, to ensure the process runs as smoothly as possible. Ian said:  “You can see trends in the residential property market over the years. Presently a big issue is having a full history of planning permission and building regulation approvals and certificates for any work carried out to a property. Get this sorted, and a lot of stress and grief can be avoided. Many people do not appreciate that a replacement central heating boiler requires a building regulations compliance certificate; and replacement windows require building regulation approval or a FENSA certificate. “Also, be aware of Japanese knotweed. We have had clients lose sales and purchases as a result of the existence of this plant at or adjacent to a property. Mortgage lenders generally will not lend against an affected property. 29 Woodbourne Road Edgbaston Birmingham B17 8BY Car parking on site

“At Tyndallwoods we aim to offer an efficient, professional service providing pragmatic workable solutions. We are approachable and we like to think that we give good value to our clients.” Much of Ian’s work comes from recommendation and repeat business which is testament to the good service and sound advice that he provides.

Kast off Kinks in Kings Heath for a one off show Don’t miss a once in a lifetime experience to hear ex-Kinks members perform all their greatest hits in the intimate atmosphere of the Hare & Hounds on Sunday 8 June. The Kinks were one of the most popular and influential groups of all time scoring hit after hit from the 1960s onwards until they split up in 1996. Kings Heath Walk of Fame has organised this special concert to celebrate the 48th Anniversary of The Kinks performing next door to the Hare & Hounds at the now sadly burnt down Ritz Ballroom. The Kast Off Kinks are not a tribute band but a great line-up of ex-Kinks members. This should prove to be a really great night to remember in Kings Heath!

Spring is sprung! Have you had your Spring Clean? I remember the joy of getting my own washing machine for the first time and washing blinking everything in the house and getting it out on the line. Happy days kiddos. Though the three piece suite still isn’t properly dry and the budgie was never the same again. It’s nice that the days are getting longer and we can get out and stretch our legs a bit. A walk round the neighbourhood improves circulation. Getting out and about locally is not just for the heart but also it is vital for the spreading of what some may call ‘tittle tattle’ but what I prefer to call ‘news.’ I always think a good measure of a healthy community is how quickly news can travel down its high streets. The other day someone up by LA Fitness in Kings Heath sneezed and within seconds someone outside the Prince of Wales in Moseley said “bless you.” You’d never get that in London!

business. A lot of people are quite rightly wary of this National Security Agency for example. But although too much surveillance can be a bad thing there are two sides to every story - life after all is young and yang, fen and shui - Starsky and Hutch. My next door neighbour Vera couldn’t find her keys the other day and they rang her up - the NSA and told her they were in her other handbag - which I thought was nice. Enjoy the extra hours of daylight.

Music Scene with Janice Long As you know I do my Radio 2 show from London now. However, I never feel very far away from home, because of your texts and emails. I have a feature called Just off Stage and recently spoke to George Ezra after he did a gig at The Hare and Hounds. George is an amazing new talent and came fifth in the BBC Sound of 2014. Apparently I am a ‘tastemaker’ and get to put forward artists who I believe are going to happen. George is only 21 but has the voice of a man a lot older, someone who has lived a lot. His music has been described as grizzly folk and if you listen to the tracks on his website- you can feel the Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie influences. There will be an album this summer.  Also on the bill that night was John Lennon McCullagh who at 15, yes 15, has released his debut album North South Divide on Alan McGee’s new label 359 music. John’s dad sent me a text after the gig to say he was driving to the next one while John junior was reading Harry Potter in the back of the car by torch.

American band We are Scientists flew in from New York to talk to me about their new album TV en Francais and do a spoken word session. During our chat they revealed that whenever they come over here they look forward to to having a curry in the balti belt. They reckon there’s nothing like it. If you are up for an eclectic festival not too far away from home but far enough to camp and take the kids take a look at Lunar Festival in Tanworthin-Arden, 6th to 8th. June. will give you all the information you need. It’s run by the Mostly Jazz Funk and Soul Festival and Moseley Folk Festival crew. Let’s hope the sun shines all weekend.

Janice Long You can tune into Janice on BBC Radio 2 between 12 midnight and 2 am Monday to Friday.
