Riverford Organic's recipe of the month Carrots and Feta (serves 4) Ingredients: • • • • • •

About 750g of carrots Olive oil 1 tablespoon of toasted cumin seeds 100g feta 2 tablespoons of chopped mint Good olive oil to drizzle

Method Scrub carrots and cut into halves or quarters depending on the size of the carrots. Toss in some olive oil and toast in the oven at 180oc for about 45mins (they need to be slightly browned). 10

When cool enough to handle, squash them in to small pieces with your hands (pick them up and squeeze!) Now mix in the cumin seeds which you have toasted in a dry pan until they are just starting to colour. Then ground the seeds in a mortar and pestle. Now spread them loosely on a plate/serving dish and scatter over the feta and mint, drizzle over the olive oil and you’re done!

St Dunstan's School Front Entrance

Exciting changes at St Dunstan's School

A new and exciting £2m building project at St Dunstan’s School has been underway since February this year. The first phase will be completed for the children’s return in September. At the end of the project some of the new facilities at St Dunstan’s will be five new classrooms, new withdrawal areas where staff can work in small groups with gifted and talented children or those who need extra support in small groups, three new Foundation classrooms with a dedicated outdoor play area and a Research Library for children to work in. The whole school will become wireless, there will be new toilets, staffroom, admin offices and a new school entrance. This is a very exciting time for St Dunstan’s! 16

In October and November prospective Nursery and Reception parents can come along and see for yourselves the difference these changes have made to this well respected local primary school. There are going to be three open days so hopefully you’ll be able to make it to one of them. Two of them are in the morning at 9.30 on Wednesday 17 October and Thursday 8 November and the third is in the evening from 7pm on Wednesday 14 November.

Bob Prew Chair of Kings Heath Centre Partnership's Clean and Green Committee receives the Floral Trail's award from Ed Webb of Webbs Garden Centres, main sponsors of the awards.

Triple Success for Kings Heath Gardening Projects Kings Heath gardening projects are celebrating a triple success in this year’s Heart of England in Bloom Awards. The Floral Trail was awarded Silver Gilt at the Awards Ceremony that was held for the first time in Kings Heath at All Saints’ Church. This success was matched by Fox Hollies School’s Silver Gilt in the Schools Competition, and Kings Heath Community Centre received a Level 3 award in the “It’s Your Neighbourhood” competition. Over 250 delegates from across the region attended the awards ceremony in September including 12 Lord Mayors. Gardening celebrity Alys Fowler, who welcomed everyone said she could not now “imagine living anywhere else” while another local resident comedian Janice Connolly aka

Mrs Barbara Nice had the whole audience singing along to her own version of the Terry Wogan hit song “The Floral Dance”. Bob Prew, chair of KHCP’s Clean and Green Committee, that organises the Floral Trail said, “The whole event was a wonderful advert for Kings Heath. Everyone said how much they admired our new Village Square and all our floral displays. We are slightly disappointed to narrowly miss out on achieving Gold again this year but Silver Gilt is still a magnificent achievement. It is the same level as achieved by Evesham, Henley in Arden and Warwick.” 19

TLC Lottery Manager Carl Bayliss meets Nursing Staff Samuel Jennings and Lindsey Findon at Birmingham St Mary's Hospice, Raddlebarn Road, Selly Park.

Local lottery supports local charities Last year TLC Lottery donated £126,000 to Birmingham St. Mary’s Hospice - enough to fund around 4,500 hours of care. That covers nursing care, physiotherapy, meals, dressings and medication which are delivered round-the-clock, 365 days a year, to people from across Birmingham and Sandwell. Each year the charity supports around 1,000 patients and at any one time is providing care to 300 people. The Hospice delivers its services through a network of palliative care doctors, clinical nurse specialists and physiotherapists, who support patients at home, at the charity’s inpatient unit and the Day Hospice in Selly Park. TLC Lottery’s funding helps the Hospice to support relatives during 20

bereavement through the work of its Family and Carer Support Team. These Staff and volunteers offer guidance and advice to those coping with loss. This is only a small part of the work of Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice – more details can be found at uk or by telephoning 0121 472 1191. Loudmouth with Eastenders' actor Nitin Ganatra at the UK Sexual Health Awards

How do you talk to your children about sex? This is a topic that many parents find embarrassing and difficult to talk to their kids about, but we all know that it needs to be done. Luckily there is a local theatre company that goes into schools to do just that. Loudmouth Education and Training spent their early years in Moseley and were finalists in this year’s UK Sexual Health Awards. They are now just down the road in Balsall Heath and go into many of our local schools to help our children have a healthy well informed attitude towards sex. Loudmouth is the first theatre company to be nominated for the Pamela Sheridan Award for innovation in sex and relationships education. The company uses theatre to make the teaching of sensitive issues safe, appropriate and memorable. The company was founded by Eleanor Vale (still a proud Moseley resident!) and Chris Cowan in 1994 and has reached over 250,000 young people with their innovative work on issues including puberty and bullying in

primary schools and alcohol and teenage pregnancy in secondary schools and colleges. Eleanor Vale says ‘learning about these real life issues is so important for young people and so we work hard to keep the price realistic so schools can continue to afford this work in tough times. We recently worked in Moseley School on growing up and puberty which was a great success. Schools can book Loudmouth from as little as £6 per student which includes up to a term’s worth of lessons to support the work.’ If you think your children deserve the best in extra-curricular education then ask your school about their sexual health education programme. You can find out more about Loudmouth’s work at 23

Symphony Hall celebrates 21st Anniversary And to mark the occasion it held a concert with performances by CBSO, CBSO Chorus and the “operatic powerhouse” Bryn Terfel. The audience included Judy Dyke of Tyndallwoods Solicitors in Edgbaston who is helping to support their 21st Anniversary Appeal seeking to forge new long-term relationships with primary schools in Ladywood. Symphony Hall is seeking to shape our city’s future and connect children to musical experiences - the cost is £35 per child. With our help these children have the chance to learn to sing, learn to play a musical instrument and attend at least two gigs a year.

We are asked to give the best birthday present that money can buy and sponsor a child. Just £35 could change their life.
