The 1st of March is the start of our new financial year, and I am delighted to say the last 12 months have been good; we have been very busy with all our Clients. We are very fortunate, we have a good order book for the forthcoming year and beyond. The demand for new homes is unquestionably still there, however with rising interest rates and the knock-on effect to mortgages it might make it harder for purchasers. Let’s hope the housing market remains robust along with the overall economy.

Rob receiving a shirt from Banbury U11 rugby club team in thanks for sponsoring their tour shirts for the last few years.

We have had a busy start to the New Year starting with a major refurbishment and development of our offices in Brackley, we have been recruiting for staff of all levels to meet with the demands of our workload, have been winning awards and more recently and on a more personal note, racing at Cheltenham.

Good luck boys.

COMMUNICATION—ROB REXTON MAR 2018

A PARRI L2 021081 7 M

ROUGH RUNNER, SATURDAY 19TH MAY 2018 The Agetur Ardnutts are taking to obstacles once again in the Oxfordshire Rough Runner @ The Great Tew Park, Chipping Norton. This year looks to be even bigger and better with an increased team of 26. As before we want to make this a family day out and will be doing a barbecue afterward at a local venue (7 minute away) Chez John Chisnall. We will also be looking for volunteer photographers and camera people to catch the antics as well as to give team support. Once again, we will use the opportunity to raise money and this year will be supporting a cause close to home. Our Accounting Manager, Linda Taylor’s, husband Garry was recently very gravely ill with unstable angina and was facing open heart surgery until he was offered the opportunity to join a trial procedure. We will be supporting a charity that helped Garry. More details to follow.

As we all know there are many ways to communicate with each other, but the best way must surely be simply talking to each other, one to one, or jointly with friends and colleagues. In this way, not only are we listening but we are looking at each other as well. i.e. visual communication.

CHELTENHAM and all things Horses….

I do believe these tools are best used for corresponding and proving information but not for matters that require discussion, I do encourage you not only to meet within your own departments but also with other departments within our company. I am not saying for one second this doesn't happen, but I am just asking myself and to you, could we do it better, and if so judge the benefits? We are one TEAM, after all – and not alone!

In modern life, we have newspapers to read and television to watch which are all very informative and helpful. Computers now allow us to interact with one or many people at the same time, mainly through emails and of course, the smart phone allowing us to talk, txt and email one another and send photographs and many other things. On this note I add that care must be made to word emails carefully so that they are not misinterpreted and cause unnecessary friction. Emails that are aggressive and out of order defeat what we are trying to do: work closer together and in harmony.

This brings me to our Clients who we choose to work with, because we believe they have the same exacting standards and morals as ourselves. Working together, communicating better, and planning better can only be beneficial to all concerned. Long term relationships need to be forged with trust and respect for all. I raise this point because I believe in many cases it can be improved if both parties are willing. Things in general would work better, smoother and more efficiently and may I say more profitably for all. Every one of us at Agetur along with our Clients/suppliers etc. all contribute to what we are doing together. Let’s make it work the very best we can.

It’s been an up and down season; we have lost Thunder Sheik to retirement and Flying Angel who was meant to be running at Cheltenham has been recovering from a wind op. The Cheltenham Festival however created great excitement with Robinshill racing in the very prestigious Arkle. He completed the event in 5th place out of 5 in what was a very fast run race. The other good news is that Flying Angel is back on form and both Robinshill and Flying Angel are entered to run at Aintree in The Grand National meeting In April. MEET NED, THE NEW AGETUR UK OFFICE DOG We have another new addition to the Head Office team in the form of Ned, a gentle collie rescue dog that has been adopted by Jane and Andy RextonWatts. Ned was shipped from Ireland and Jane felt with his origins from the Emerald Isle would fit right in with the crew at Agetur.

AWARDS

MAR 2018 Oct 2017

COMMERCIAL

Agetur UK started the year by being judged by Bovis Homes West Midlands to be their Regional Contractor of the Year. In addition, we were also awarded Subcontractor of the Month in January 2018 at Dorchester Living’s Upper Heyford site. What a fabulous start to the year, well done all. While special congratulations should go to those on Bovis sites and the Dorchester Living site Rob emphasized that as a team he considered everyone as great. As the saying goes there is no ‘I’ in team and he would like to thank every member of the staff for their achievements and diligent work. Keep up the splendid effort. Now that we have completed our fiscal year for 2017/18 and are at the start of our new financial year, we can not only look back over the past year at what we have achieved, but also take the opportunity to look forward at what we hope to accomplish over the forthcoming 12months. 2017-2018 was certainly a busy year where as a company we not only achieved what we planned in terms of turnover, but also replaced completed works and strengthened our current order book with new contracts, all of which are from within our existing client base.

Agetur has been making sure that Brackley where our Head Office is based is kept clean and safe.

At the beginning of 2017 we started the year with around £48m of work left on our order book and I am pleased to say that following all the work we have completed over the last 12months, we are starting 2018 with £48m on the order book. This has been achieved through the securing of new works over the last 12months at Didcot, Upper Heyford, Bicester, Wallingford, Carterton & Cawston. All the new work we have secured over the last 12months has been from our existing client base. This demonstrates the strength of the relationships we have built with our clients, but also and more importantly the confidence they have with Agetur and the work we do.

at an increase on last year, however we do not anticipate that this will be dramatic, more of a considered progression alongside our clients, as they look to increase their build rates as compared to last year. Potential new work anticipated over the coming months is again all from existing clients with new phases potentially coming on stream at Didcot, Upper Heyford, potential new sites at Stadhampton, Milton Keynes, Cawston, and later in the year Eynsham and Valley Park. Thus, we can see the importance of us maintaining the sound working relationships we have both with the offices and on the sites. As a business it is vitally important that we also all take steps to control the commercial elements that make up the day to day running of Agetur, not only in terms of works on the order books and projected works but also and most importantly expenditure on site. It is very important that all additional works or variations are communicated through the office prior to being undertaken. If we don’t follow this procedure we put ourselves in the position where we may not get paid for the additional works for some time or even not at all! If we consider that we have some 30+ active sites, and on each site, we could be carrying out works without prior agreement of price, this can all add up to be a very large sum of money that we may not get paid for some time. Please remember these are not just Agetur rules, these are also the rules that our clients enforce.

As a commercial department we have over the past few months added to the team, with Mike moving from buying to work as an estimator and Ben joining Pat in the What potential does the year ahead buying office. I am sure you will all hold? welcome and support them in their In terms of turnover we are looking roles.

As always, please keep in close contact with your site QS and thank you for your help over the last 12 months. James, Cormac, Andy, Richard, Mike and Tom.

AGETUR UK OFFICE RENOVATION AND EXTENSION MAR 2018

We are delighted that our renovation has all gone very smoothly. We employed a contractor experienced in office conversions, CIS Ltd from Staffordshire, who did an excellent job in the timeframe. We started on Oct 21st and finished except for a few snags by Christmas.

together on the ground floor with separate offices for individuals and a meeting room has also been added. The kitchen area has been transformed and is now a space that is much more inviting as a lunch room with soft furnishings, a table and chairs, as well as a television. Our work shop has moved into Unit 6 which is much bigger.

Is it a plane? No, it’s a girl working on site doing groundworks. All the rumours are true there is a girl working for Agetur UK, on site, undertaking groundworks.

I have signed up to do the Rough Runner in May and I’m really looking forward to it. If any of you see me on site don’t be shy and say hello. And ‘yes’ I do have a boyfriend.

The changes have increased our office space considerably and refurbished the building throughout, creating Everything has been nicely finished off with a lick of a much better environment to work in. Hello, my name is Molly and I have recently started working for Agetur at Upper Heyford with James Ludlow and his gang. I’ve always loved working outdoors as I was brought up on farms and country estates, so I’m used to being out in all weather. In my spare time I enjoy fishing, hunting and shooting.

SHOWCASING RECENT WORK

Taylor Wimpey’s High Quality Development at Wheatley on the London Road South Oxfordshire

Before I came to Agetur I was working as a tree surgeon for 5 years. I fancied a change of direction but was unsure what to do next. After a tree falling on my head I decided I wanted to be a bit closer to the ground (but not as close as Grubby or Colin as he now likes to be known). I have known James forever and he suggested to me to give groundworks a try and I thought ‘why not’. I booked my CSCS test, passed first time and started on site the very next day. Since I have started I have been undertaking finishing works. I have been laying slabs and edgings and changing kerbs and ‘loving it’. I have even been on my first dirty mission and had to unblock some homeowner’s drain, will they ever learn nappies are none flushable! I am really enjoying working for Agetur and have been made to feel welcome and part of the team, long may it continue. I am looking forward to learning new skills and progressing my groundworks career with Agetur.

CELEBRATING 20 YEARS It’s amazing how time flies. The reason I say this is that on January the 19th I surpassed 20 years’ service with Agetur UK, a milestone that has seen my role within the company change from a mobile mechanic for the early years then stepping up to take the Plant Managers position later. Trevor also surpassed this milestone a few months earlier, as a lot of you know Trevor returned in 1997 and has been our main HGV lorry driver ever since. So many things have changed during the last 20 years but it’s great to know so many lads that have been here a lot longer than us! Gary Halford

NEW ADDITION TO PROCUREMENT TEAM MAR 2018

OC M AR T 22 0 11 78

Hello All, I have just joined Pat Ryan in the buying department at Agetur UK and I’m enjoying being involved in what is a busy and thriving company as part of a successful team. I previously worked for Kier, out of Rushden, Northants, where I was involved in buying for the Housebuilding, Infrastructure, Housing Maintenance and Commercial divisions. Prior to Kier I was at Irvine Whitlock Ltd, which was at that time the largest Brickwork/External Facade contractor in the UK. Projects I was involved in include Arsenal Emirates Stadium (we had a few Tottenham brickies on the job – who made sure they left their mark!?), St Pancras Extension, Birmingham New Street Station, Westfield Shopping Centres in Stratford London, Derby and Bristol, New American Embassy, Canada Water Library, Battersea Cats and Dogs Home and the Café/ restaurant at the top of Snowdonia. Outside of work I spend time with my family, running my 2 kids around to their various clubs and neverending party invites!

Big congratulations to ... Aimee Taylor, our rising accounting Star. Aimee completed her AAT level 2 in December 2017 and passed with Distinction. Aimee said: “For my AAT course I initially went to Silverstone UTC but halfway through my course Agetur kindly let the course run from its premises (Unit 1) because of difficulty with trying to get access to the college during the school holidays. So lucky me had it all right on my door step! This course lasted 12 months and after a few tantrums and late nights I passed with an overall score of 92% which got me a distinction. One of my highest scores was 98% (not that I’m bragging or anything).

PLANT DEPARTMENT Green Beacon Seat Belt System. The mechanics We are also starting to refresh the look of the vans. have been busy fitting the green beacon seat belt safety system initially to all our Dumpers and Rollers then more recently to Telehandlers & lastly the Excavators. This has now become company policy. All our plant hire suppliers are aware of this also and I’m pleased to say that all have accommodated this recent hire requirement by fitting this system to all their kit too. This hasn’t happened overnight, as you can imagine we have a lot of our own kit that needed this system so this took a little time to complete and has been a costly exercise at £100 per kit to ensure we comply on ALL sites. Please BE WARNED, these kits are only effective if they are being used correctly. As for other news, we are as always looking at replacements and additions during 2018 with 13tonne, 8tonne Excavators and Dumpers on the shopping list with Jason continuing to upgrade the vans at a steady pace throughout the year also. We do have a replacement policy in place and do our very best with trying to keep to this. As I have said before we DO need to look after the kit that we currently have so, not only servicing, but daily and weekly checks are essential in the upkeep of all our equipment. When we do get equipment in the yard we repair all mechanical faults etc, then it’s over to Tony for a refurb. As you can see from the pictures they do look good!

Note from Jason: Reminder to all that you must be in possession of a valid UK licence issued by the DVLA to drive any company vans. If you don’t hold one of these you will not be allowed to drive a company van as this is not only company policy, but also enforced by our insurers. Please remember to drive in a considerate and polite manner. The recent spell of cold weather has not helped but I was pleased to see that everybody heeded the warnings and were sensible. Please continue to let me know of any defects and remember to do your daily vehicle checks. Drive Safely.

As for the future, well that is the big question. Do I go down the accountancy route or Payroll? Either way I am lucky enough to carry on with which ever course I choose thanks to Agetur.”

Well Done Aimee.

I also completed a 2-day intensive payroll course at the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals in Solihull a few weeks ago. This really blew my mind as the legislation behind it is very intricate and forever changing so it really keeps you on your toes. I wasn’t expecting it to be anything like that!

SECURITY. Yes, a trouble free festive period but it seems like the thieves have this time off as well as since the turn of the year we have been hit on a couple of sites and had kit stolen throughout the day which is totally unacceptable. We can only do so much, that I know, as these guys have no morals and come completely prepared against any obstacle. But when we’re leaving kit out during breaks etc there is no excuse. I know I’ve said many times before but please be more vigilant as small items of plant are very expensive to replace. As always, thanks for your continued help and support it is important to us. HEALTH & SAFETY + TRAINING MAR 2018

An Inspector Calls: …. Once upon a time a HSE inspector was driving past a construction site and saw a construction company name he didn’t know. He thought the bricks stored close to the entrance obscured visibility for vehicles entering and leaving the site so pulled in. He was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the controls within the site so was reasonably happy. But on looking at some parked dumpers he made a strong assumption and commented to the Site Manager that Agetur staff were not using seat belts when driving the dumpers.

Dust: …. The other important thing with the HSE is Silica Dust in particular, dust in general and the use of Dust Masks when cutting concrete/brick/tarmac products with saws. The Clients H&S staff, are looking for this too when they visit sites. So please make sure you wear glasses/goggles or visor, ear defenders, dust mask or air fed dust masks when specified by the clients and use dust suppression, when using Stihl saws or floor saws.

C.A.T 4G SERVICE AVOIDANCE TOOLS Another innovation within the industry Agetur are introducing is One seat belt was buckled up behind the seat, on the the usage of the CAT4g other the male buckle was very muddy. On inserting cable detectors. Some the male into the female, it came out spotless clients are insisting this is indicating, to him, that the seat belts had not been mandatory on their sites used. We couldn’t argue the dumpers were not in use and others will follow. as a flashing light was on. It has always been our policy that operators of mobile plant must always wear seat belts. Since the inspector called: All our clients require that operators wear seatbelts when operating mobile plant and that we must not use mobile plant where the seatbelt cannot be used. Some clients now also specify the installation of Green Flashing Lights on all plant too so it’s easier to see if you’re not wearing them. We have recently disciplined several operators for such failures and you are warned that such an incident could mean the operator is removed from site by the client, causing them travel to work problems and is viewed as Gross Misconduct for disciplinary purposes.

The data taken in GPS mode on the CAT is blue toothed to phone and then transferred automatically to an online portal to be analysed and plotted proving the position and correct usage.

HSE visits could well happen at any time in the future as we must tell them we are starting a site, by completing something called an F10, so watch out! Your sins may find you out. As the HSE now charge companies for the privilege of sorting out the problem it could become expensive, there are always personal sanctions on an operator by the HSE including the issuing of a Prohibition Notice and Prosecution.
