February, 2017 Moscow, Russia Moscow Government The Concept of the main entrance to Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy (VDNKh), projects in KB «Strelka» Stolbovoy Dmitriy, Olga Kononova, Adelsha Pateev, Alsu Fatehova, Svetlana Radchenko. ˘˚ The main object of attraction is the Main entrance to VDNKh, which consists of a Central arch, the semicircle side wings and separate areas, distinguished by its functionality and having a length of about 800 metres. The area is able to be not only efficient transport and transit hub, but also a center of social activity of citizens and guests of the capital.

8

Designing a colorful boardwalk and emphasizing the unique architectural ensemble is the main idea of the concept. The improvement of the quality of the environment is enhanced by unique integrated solutions, which include gardening, paving, lighting and urban furniture. The planting of avenues in a strict regular style becomes the main tool of humanization of the environment — creating a sense of proportionality to the human scale. Gardens of trees and perennial grasses that are associated with fields of cereals, reminiscent of the history of agricultural exhibitions held in the territory of the VDNKh. Thus, the green promenade in front of the arch of the Main entrance becomes a modern street of urban life and can become another landmark of the city.

Projects

THE MAIN PRINCIPLES OF THE PROJECT

˘˚The territory of design is a complex transportation hub where intense flow of public transport is combined with active car flows, serving tens of thousands of residents from Moscow and Moscow regions every day. At the same time there are momentous objects of attraction. The objects are far from each other, transfer from one mode to another is organized inefficiently, and the existing service does not meet the needs of intensive pedestrian traffic. Thus, the basic design principles were formulated:

— the creation of quality pedestrian infrastructure and intuitive navigation between the iconic sites of attraction. — humanization environment: creating a comfortable perception of territory and sense of proportionality to the human scale; — optimization and reorganization of pedestrian and traffic flows.

< Analysis of the existing urban setting and detailed consideration of the plan of planting trees revealed regular patterns of planting and organization of the lawns. The step of the existing trees (a 14,4m grid) was taken as a base for planting new varieties. Selected trees are not higher than 12 meters and do not disturb the existing visual perspective.

Creating intuitive navigation was realized by the selection of the paving pattern. Stripes of contrasting slabs form a walkway leading to the square before the arch of the Main entrance of VDNKh. The stripes become wider closer to the arch, and reach a maximum width opposite the Main entrance. The semicircular area in front of the arch stands a unique paving pattern.

Projects

THE PROJECT`S STRUCTURE

˘˚The project aims to create a new image of Russian cities — several types of public spaces, such as streets, squares, embankments and parks will be improved in each city. Improving the quality of the environment involves 40 Russian cities with a total population of about 28 million people.

Perm Yekaterinburg

KB Strelka is engaged in technical tasks, which formulates the developmental strategy of a city, selects a potential sites, determines the mood of improvement. My team was developing briefs for Yekaterinburg and Perm.

The development of the concepts was created by local architects. It helped to share our experience with them, to retain the identity of the city and emphasize the unique character of the place.

PROJECT BY KB «STRELKA» + ОSА ARCHITECTS YEKATERINBURG. THE EMBENKMENT OF ISET RIVER

18

Projects

The vision The main idea of the concept of improvement of the embankment of the Iset river is the creation of a fundamentally new environment for the quality, able to emphasize the existing identification of the contrasting nature of the banks and create almost tangible comfort for the user, who was here for the first time or came here every day. According to the concept, new pedestrian bridges will appear across the river, which are physical connectivity of the two banks. Also the connecting thread between the city and nature, between active and calm, between movement and contemplation.

IDEA The ideology of the place is a public garden, which can be not only a place for growing plants, but also can become the actual centre of education and development. The vegetable garden, the fruit garden and the greenhouse are the main objects of the territory. They are the subjects of education, care and activity. All areas of the site are aspects to this fundamental principle. The visitors of the place will become the main owners, the playground is integrated into the garden. Children during

the games will learn to care for and observe the traditional local plants. The greenhouse is the place for botanical studies, master classes and placement of plants. This space will be used a whole year. The area of the fruit garden and the adjacent premises are the areas of activities and recreation. There are a cafe, a kitchen for visitors (a place for cooking classes), an amphitheatre (a zone of views and lectures), a summer school.

Workshop

AA VISITING SCHOOL WORKSHOP

˘˚Shabolovka is a district in Moscow, whose history presents the innovative view and ideals of the 1930s. Our task was to analyze the territory, reveal its major problems and to propose our vision of how to improve the situation. The workshop participants were divided into five teams that were assigned a part of the district each. We have delivered five unique solutions united into one general developmental strategy. The results of the 8–day workshop were presented later at the exhibition «Shabolovka. What if?» and at the Zodchestvo festival, 2016. The starting point for formulating this grand concept was understanding the fundamental changes of lifestyle from the 1930s till nowadays, as well as the future trends. It turns out that in spite of the established reputation of Shabolovka being an expensive neighborhood, it was isolated from the influence of the rest of the growing city which inhibited its development during the last decades.

AA VISITING SCHOOL WORKSHOP ˘˚The site analysis shows the lack of social, commercial and infrastructural interaction between Shabolovka with the rest of the city. Some parts are not used efficiently and seem abandoned. We also noticed that the residents live remotely and are mostly unaware of the opportunities for recreation and socialization that are present in the area. We developed two types of strategies of inner and outer interactions that would integrate Shabolovka back into the active life of the city.

Shabolovka and the mode of live

1. OUR TEAM PROPOSAL «COLORS OF SHABOLOVKA» ˘˚The district of Shabolovka street is located within walking distance from the Garden ring, the residential complex ZIL and Gorky Park. It is surrounded by Oktyabrskaya, Tulskaya, Shabolovskaya, Paveletskaya, Dobryninskaya metro stations, and Leninsky Prospekt. Despite the good location in the city structure and well-developed transportation network, the district fades.

< the new Boulevard ring, which is formed by connecting the Academician Petrovsky and Khavskaya streets. This idea brings back to the 1930-s. A direct link between such objects as Gorky Park and the Paveletskaya metro station creates a new road network through Shabolovskaya district and will contribute to its development.

44

< the route fills the area with new meanings, but does not violate the historical appearance. The nature of the new Boulevard can be divided into four parts: recreational, educational, residential and business – functional and spatial characteristics, which are formed by surround buildings. This approach is reflected in the improvement that instantly adapts to the needs of a segment. Shukhov Tower

industrial area

Workshop 2. The power of tower The area around the tower – a large empty industrial area, surrounded by fences and closed to the entrance, despite the fact that it is situated near the most active point on the map of the area – metro station Shabolovskaya. With the right converting space around the tower active flows of people in this place will help to create organic self-sustaining educational and cultural cluster. Removing fences and barriers, increasing the density, saturating various functions and creating a system of squares will help to improve this territory.

3. Unrationalism Here it was proposed to form a new living space inside this utopian monument, projecting and installing a large-scale dome-shell, similar to the work of Buckminster Fuller. Thus the team proposed to create a special microclimate inside the dome with non-standard types of landscaping and features corresponding to the new environment. This project is an allegory, students identified and deliberately emphasized the isolation of the housing estate. Another suggestion – the transformation of the courtyards of the complex in public and private gardens. A large and underutilized space between buildings was taken care of in this project. Moreover, a new and meaningful content was created, which is able to change the quality of life in local scale. The vision returns to the original aesthetics of rationalist buildings: tall trees with abundant foliage, covering the architecture of the complex, were not there. To cut down the bulk of the chaotically overgrown trees and clear the space for effective use for effective use was the radical starting point.

4. Mind the gap The fourth part of the territory is closer to the Tulskaya metro station. Residential development is dominated by abandoned objects. The analysis of the territory has shown that this part features the shortest paths to the necessary infrastructure (banks, grocery stores, pharmacies, etc). The team suggested that this area should undergo a comprehensive regeneration, which would include the development of a system of open areas, based on different special and functional principles of the work. Series of working spaces (offices and workshops), the KGB prison, transferred to a hotel will bring new feel of the city with the view of the model of the Shukhov tower from the window.

5. Bulvarizing Shabolovka Boulevard of the Serpukhov shaft is founded by the participants of a workshop as a border between districts. Decorative fencing and a small number of pedestrian crossings affect the environment and the quality of life in the area. Participants proposed to transform the Boulevard from a barrier into an attractive pedestrian axis. A series of pavilions-rolling hills, located along the Boulevard, becomes the primary architectural tool. Shabolovka and the mode of live

REWOODLUTION *WORKSHOP PROJECT

Date: July, 2015 Location: Tavrichesky Garden, Saint Petersburg, Russia Organizer: Association of wooden house building; Architectural workshop Belousova; Academy named A. L. Stieglitz Tutors: Nikolay Belousov Jury: Totan Kuzembaev, Olga Sevan, Sergey Skuratov, Nikolai Malinin, Ivan Ovchinnikov, Nikolay Lyzlov, Elena Gonzalez, Michael Mamoshin, Alexey Bavykin, Sergei Antonov.

46

The objective of the workshop was to create small architectural forms from wood for Tavrichesky park users. Ages and cultural value of the Park were imposed on the participants by project limits. After studying the history of the Park, our group decided to focus on the willows, which had already been standing along the pond for more than 200 years. Also the idea stressed the landscape character of the Park, the main function of which is to please the eyes of its visitors. Standing in a row with other trees, the selected willow was very special because of the hollow — the transmitter between man and tree. We focused attention on it by a connecting installation.

48

The primary purpose of the exhibition was to demonstrate the vast potential of Shabolovka to the locals. The results of the 8-day workshop “Shabolovka and the mode of live” were presented in the gallery “NaShabolovke” in the very center of the neighborhood. The exhibition was arranged and curated by the workshop alumni. The exhibition started with the welcome stand which held a brief description of the project and the exposition of problems and ideas that showcased the main strategies of our proposals. In the inner chamber of the gallery, the moodboards of all five proposals were displayed along with the sketches which demonstrated idea developments. An explanatory video was projected on the physical model of Shabolovka. Closer to the exit area visitors could take a look at the workshop photos and leave feedback on a drawing board.

This is the only and the largest exhibit space, where you can simultaneously see the results of the architectural and urban planning of many cities and regions, creative architectural ensembles, design institutes, workshops and offices, young groups, students of architecture schools and faculties, children’s architectural and artistic groups. The main goal of the festival is to get feedback from the professional community. Having accumulated this experience, reinterpreting their projects, tutors began writing the book in conjunction with the British company ARUP, who spoke sponsor of the school.
