INSTITUTE INTELLIGENCE AND DATA: A CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE IN AI AND DATA VALORIZATION IN QUÉBEC CITY On January 29, 2020, Université Laval and the Ministry of Economy and Innovation of Quebec City announced the creation of the Institute Intelligence and Data (IID), an institute striving to support and unify expertise and innovation in artificial intelligence and data valorization, already firmly rooted both on the Université Laval campus and in the Quebec City area. IID thus became the linchpin of a regional cluster of expertise in artificial intelligence, enabling the pooling of resources useful for the development and promotion of economic and innovative activities in AI and data science. The institute strives to fulfill its mission in four main unifying areas: • Physical environment: Exploring the uses and interactions between the physical environment and data, on the scale of individuals, buildings, cities and territories. • Health and life sciences: Analyzing data from the living world, from the molecular level to that of human and animal populations, and supporting its use for a better understanding of our world. • Artificial intelligence and data processing methods: Promoting and developing fundamental and applied research involving both generic methods and specific approaches or complex systems. • Ethics, confidentiality, and social acceptability: Integrating an ethical dimension into artificial intelligence developments and research in response to realities associated with security, confidentiality, and social acceptability. In a spirit of interdisciplinarity and collaboration, researchers contribute to the development and enrichment of knowledge in a multitude of areas of application: from Industry 4.0 to the Internet of Things, from learning methods to immersive technologies, and from smart cities to medical imaging. Their work thus supports major technological advances, particularly in robotics, computer vision, machine learning, and complex data processing, carried out with a particular concern for confidentiality, ethics, and social acceptability. By relying on this advanced expertise, IID provides training for students and professionals, specialized and general event programming, and a collaborative offering for companies.
