MEDIA ALERT 29 October 2009
CHRISTMAS APPEAL TO LAUNCH ALONGSIDE REFUGEE PICNIC The 2009 Christmas Appeal will be launched on Sunday November 1, at the ‘Welcome to Western Australia’ Picnic with an estimated 120 newly arrived people in attendance.
The bi-annual picnics are jointly run by the Society’s Refugee and Migrant Committee and the Christian Brothers. They serve as a great opportunity for newly arrived families to meet and share experiences with a BBQ lunch and activities for the children run by students from Sacred Heart College.
The Refugee and Migrant Support Program is a ‘Special Work’ of the Society that provides household goods, emergency clothing and advocacy as well as Christmas food hampers to newly arrived families over the festive season.
The Society responds to all genuine calls from the community in need of assistance and will aid the people of Western Australia who are struggling to cope with the onset of the expensive festive season with food, clothing, help with utility bills and much more.
The Metropolitan Call Centre has just experienced an extremely busy month with a total of 1,421 calls for assistance in the month of September with similar figures already showing for October.
The Society asks the WA community to support the Appeal so we can ensure an adequate response can be given to the thousands who will call on us in the coming months.
