Welcome, from the Chair of Trustees and Chief Executive

Over the last year, our supporters have helped us to provide life-changing care for patients and their families. Lots of people raise money as a way of expressing appreciation after they or a loved one has been a patient at one of our hospitals. Many of our wonderful staff raise money too, in addition to working so hard to provide excellent care. We also benefit hugely from volunteers who give their time so generously to support our work. Every day we’re inspired by the wonderful community of people behind us. Without you, our work simply wouldn’t be possible. Thank you. We are so proud of the progress we have made over the past year together. Thank you for your continued

support.

so much

CUTTING EDGE CARDIOLOGY

Over the past year, thanks to your support, we’ve advanced clinical research in many areas, improved treatments and worked to ensure both patients and staff have a better experience.

• A cardiology grant has helped our researchers to explore pioneering new ways to plan for non-invasive heart interventions – so patients can benefit from surgery that’s as timely and precise as possible.

Transformative projects

£1.744m MAKING A BIG DIFFERENCE • Our Support Life Appeal reached its target, so work on the new Critical Care Centre is now underway. It will offer patients the widest range of treatment in the biggest and most pioneering centre of its kind in the UK. • We pledge to Transform Liver Care for young patients with the launch of our TLC fundraising appeal to raise £1.5 million. See page 6 for more information 4

Research

A LIFE-SAVING LEGACY Sydney Orpin left a legacy of £430,000 to the liver unit, after seeing the impact liver disease had on a kind neighbour Michelle Mitchell, whose family supported him when he was widowed. Sydney’s generous gift resulted in the purchase of a FibroScan machine for King’s. This cutting-edge machine promises better health for expectant mothers and their unborn babies by assessing the health of their livers through the different stages of pregnancy.

Enhancing patient treatment

£261,000

BETTER TREATMENT FOR PATIENTS • 70 patients benefited from surgery deep within the brain – which wouldn’t have been possible a year ago – thanks to a new ultrasound machine (see page 8). • New interactive technology is helping to prevent people with dementia from declining while in hospital and improving their experience in a range of ways – from boosting communication to reducing agitation and improving sleep. • Clinicians can pick up heart problems in babies and children more quickly with a new echocardiogram machine in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit.

Improving patient experience

£475,000 BETTER FOR EVERYONE

• We funded a pilot scheme that reduces frustration for outpatients by allowing them to check in themselves and get real-time updates on waiting times. • We supported a youth volunteering project – the King’s Youth Social Action Programme – which has brought in 30 new young volunteers to support patients.

Supporting staff

£202,000 HELPING OUR TEAM TO PROVIDE QUALITY CARE • We launched our King’s Stars recognition programme to reward and motivate outstanding staff. We had 400 nominations across 11 categories. 55

How our TLCwe Appeal young lives Together haveis antransforming overview headline In March 2019 we launched our Transforming Liver Care (TLC) Appeal to support children with liver disease.

The appeal aims to transform children’s liver care, raising £1.5 million over 12 months to:

Every year, 3,000 children with liver disease are treated at the world-renowned King’s Paediatric Liver Centre. Thanks to the fantastic care they receive, the young patients have the best long-term chance of survival in the UK. The centre is also a national hub for pioneering research, improving understanding and treatment of liver problems in children.

• advance research. • buy cutting edge equipment. • make the hospital environment a pleasanter place for children and young people. • provide support networks for young patients and their families. Your support will also help provide support for young people moving from children’s to adult liver services. This can be a particularly difficult time and children can experience problems ranging from anxiety and depression to failing to take their medication. Two part-time youth workers will help them to make the transition successfully and establish a healthy, independent lifestyle.

Receiving a transplant is the biggest gift that anyone can ever give to you. My donor saved my life. 6

Harry, aged 11 (on the left, holding the letter ‘T’) who had a successful liver transplant at King’s in March 2019

When we were in hospital, in the eye of the storm, we couldn’t fully comprehend the enormity of the situation. King’s protected us, to ensure that we could cope, and now it’s such a comfort to know that they will continue to support us. Sarah, Harry’s mum.

Together, we’re

making a difference to children like Emily Little Emily was just three months old when tests showed she might have a rare liver disease. Emily was flown from Ireland to King’s in London for an operation. It was successful – but then Emily suffered a massive internal bleed. Mum Ann-Marie remembers that harrowing night:

We thought we’d nearly lost her... We were told to say our goodbyes. Although the surgery was successful, more problems followed and Emily was put on the transplant list. Thankfully, a family friend was a suitable donor and at 19 months Emily was finally deemed strong enough to have the operation, but the liver transplant wasn’t the end of her struggle. Once again, Emily developed worrying symptoms and more surgery followed. Finally, Emily was moved from the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit to the High Dependency Unit and then the Rays of Sunshine ward. After many weeks of intensive care, she was finally deemed well enough to go home.

With the help of our supporters, we’re saving the lives of children like Emily with liver disease. 77

Together we’re advancing brain surgery Our supporters helped buy a life-saving new ultrasound machine for use during brain surgery. By providing detailed images of the brain, this incredible machine helps to pinpoint the location of tumours and critical brain structures accurately, helping to improve the success of brain surgery for patients.

The machine is helping us to improve outcomes for patients and minimise risk by providing us with accurate and reliable images during surgery. It is enabling us to perform procedures deep within the brain, which may not have been possible just 12 months ago‌ Thanks to the Charity’s support, we can now provide our patients with neurosurgical care that goes over and above the normal standard of care. Thank you for helping us to transform lives

Thank you to all our supporters who donated, collected, sang, ran, walked, climbed and abseiled to support King’s College Hospital Charity last year. Here are just a few of our fundraising heroes: Left: Surjit, who has been raising money through sponsored walks since his double liver and kidney transplant in 2010.

Frankie (aged 5) and Ralphie (aged 2), climbed Mount Snowdon with their family to raise money in memory of their granddad Pete, who was treated at King’s.

Left: One of our brave abseilers going over the top! 10

Right: Our festive runners in the London Santa Run.

Above: Mark, his son Harry and friend Harvey who have undertaken some of the most challenging runs in the world for King’s, following Mark’s devastating liver cancer diagnosis.

Below: Dulwich Hamlet FC collected at their matches to support children in hospital.

I can’t speak highly enough of the staff at King’s. They couldn’t have done more to help us out. The whole lot of them are absolutely amazing. Ann-Marie – whose daughter Emily was cared for at King’s (see page 7)
