Check It Out It’s a Ball Game

I

t is embarrassing to talk about and definitely not something you want to share with your mates or sometimes even your girlfriend. But it is not something you should ignore. Things can go wrong with your testicles gradually or even very fast indeed. Checking yourself regularly is the name of the ball game. Knowing exactly how your testicles feel and what they look like is very important. Therefore, if any changes were to occur, you can seek medical advice quickly. A few conditions that affect the testicles are serious, however, most are not, so obsessing and worrying about it for no good reason is not necessary. Whether you are in the shower or the comfort

of your bedroom, allocate a few minutes, once a month, to check yourself over.

Single Biggest Cause of Cancer Related Deaths

The key signs you need to look for are as follows: A lump in one testicle Pain and tenderness in either testicle. Discharge from the penis Blood in the sperm at ejaculation. A build-up of fluid inside the scrotum. A heavy or dragging feeling in the groin or scrotum. An enlargement of the breasts with or without tenderness and, yes guys do have breasts. Now you know what you should be looking for, you need to know how to check you testicles properly. Examine

Better safe...

the scrotum, looking for any lumps on the skin or swellings inside. Cradle the whole scrotum and testicles in the palm of your hand and feel the difference between the testicles. One is almost always larger and lying lower. This is completely normal. Examine each testicle in turn, and then compare them with each other. Use both hands and gently roll each testicle between thumb and forefinger. Testicular cancer represents only 1 per cent of all cancers in men, but it is the single biggest cause of cancer-related deaths in men aged 15 to 35 years in the UK. But, just because you find something, it does not mean you have cancer. There are many conditions that may cause a lump in your testicles. After performing a self examination, if you do find a lump, do not panic and get yourself to the doctors to be on the safe side. JUICE << 09

Be Your Own Breast Friend

...than too late.

The earlier breast cancer is diagnosed, the easier it is likely to be to treat it and the better the chance of cure. So checking yourself regularly is important but don’t go overboard. Your breasts change all through the month, particularly around the time of your menstrual cycle. The best time to check your breast is in the shower or bath. Get your hands soapy and rub both breasts all over and under your armpits. The NHS breast 10 >> JUICE

awareness five-point code says know what is normal for you, look and feel, know what changes to look for, report any changes without delay and attend for breast screening.

rassed, it’s great you took the initiative to get it checked out. Not everyone is so lucky. Be your own breast friend and cop a feel regularly, it is for the breast. Why not buy the Breastlight from Boots.

Report Any Changes Without Delay You are checking for changes to the size, shape or feel of your breast. This could mean a lump or thickening anywhere in the breast. Most people naturally have one breast bigger than the other. So if you do feel something that concerns you, go straight to your GP. Even if it turns out to be nothing, don’t be embar-

Pre-Intoxication

Picture this: Your head feels 10 times heavier, the taste of bile lingers at the back of your throat, your tongue is so dry it resembles sandpaper, and the room is spinning so fast that it feels like you’re riding the waltzer. Sound familiar? Of course it does. It is that classic scene where you wake up thinking ‘This is what death must feel like’. That’s right! The hangover. We all hate them, yet continue to wake up to them and do nothing to prevent it. Ladies and gents, welcome to our collection of prep tools and remedies that could help banish them for ever! Man we’re good to you...

12 >> JUICE

Olive oil Eating four dessert spoons of this golden fruit oil will coat the base of the stomach with beefy foundations in which high in sugar drinks, such as alcopops, can sit and continue to make you high as a high without the tummy upset. But here’s a tip - it tastes bloody foul! So, add a little vanilla essence. Yummy.

Milk Who would have thought a cow could

save your liver? Drinking 250ml of the white stuff will line your stomach with a thick layer, helping your stomach to protect itself against the burning sensation of highly alcoholic spirits such as vodka as well as slow its absorption into the body. Cheers Daisy.

Garlic The Japanese ground one of these babies into a shot injection cocktail of glucose and vitamins C and B1 to repair liver damage and sooth upset stomachs. But of course over there they’re insane so make life easy for yourself and just make a soup instead. It will settle your stomach acids in preparation for that yard of lager awaiting your arrival.

PHOTOGRAPHS by Daniel Poole

Vitamin c Assuming you have survived the night, the morning comes baring gifts. For starters, damage to your liver. Oranges and tomatoes are rich in Britain’s favourite vitamin and just a couple of one or the other will speed up the metabolism of alcohol by the liver, helping it repair itself. Kill two birds with one stone and have one of your five-a-day!

cucumber

Iced water

Pretty much everything in your cupboard will leave you feeling nauseous, but not the loyal cucumber! Its next-to-tasteless, watery texture is easy on the stomach and green vegetables like this are packed with antioxidant boosters. This repairs damage done to your body cells, as well as help prevent any further damage in the future. Score!

fry-up The most beautiful meal ever to exist, the filthy fry-up is ideal for pre and post intoxication. The body slowly digests its high fat content and so the body, throughout your night out, steadily absorbs alcohol. However, when at death’s door, the toast absorbs acid in your stomach, the eggs are packed with cysteine, which is said to mop up the destructive chemicals that build up in the liver when it’s metabolising alcohol, and the bacon... well... just tastes immense!

Post-Intoxication

We know it doesn’t exactly take a rocket scientist to work out that water is good for you when you’re feeling rough. But, by adding a couple of ice cubes to cool it rapidly helps to flush the body of all those nasty sambucas you downed that Saturday night as well as cleanse the stomach of all impurities and wash your system thoroughly. Try drinking half a pint per unit of alcohol you lashed!

Choose your tattoo wisely.

Why get a tattoo? What are the advantages and disadvantages of having one? And how do you care for them?

U

ntil recent years tattoos have been seen as quite rough, common things to get, but with more and more studios popping up and programmes like LA Ink, they are becoming more and more acceptable in modern society. So why get a tattoo? It’s a decision that has to be thought out carefully, because it’s permanent. There are many reasons to get tattoos, one is a form of memorial to a close one or even pet that has been lost or in memory of a point in your life, whether it’s a struggle with illness or even drugs or alcohol abuse. Another is as a way of commitment; the most common is for a partner. Probably one of the biggest reasons that people get tattoos is to show a lifestyle, maybe an interest or even just a cool design. Just like anything, tattoos come with disadvantages. The main one is to do with jobs. Although becoming more accepting in recent years, employers are still very picky about candidates. If

you have tattoos that are visible, then you tend to stand less chance of getting the job than someone without. Another disadvantage is that they are permanent and only fade but never disappear. The only way to get rid of them is through laser surgery, which is very painful. Along with making sure that the design that you have chosen is perfect for you, you’ve got to make another important decision: where to go. Remember that if you go for the cheap option then your probably not going to get good quality. You don’t want this because if you need to get the tattoo touched up then it’s going to hurt twice as much as the

first time. It’s also important to check the studio’s licence there are too many studios that aren’t licensed these days.

Make your tattoo last Caring for your new tattoo can be very confusing; with different artists giving contradicting tips to give you a smooth healing process. It is important to listen to the tips that your artist has given you, but here are some of the essential points: vAlthough you may be excited to go and show your friends what you’ve just JUICE << 15

had done, it is important that you don’t remove your bandage for a minimum of two hours. The reason for this is that it is a form of wound and you want to avoid infection as much as possible. The only exception is if some kind of plastic has been used to cover the tattoo, because you don’t want to suffocate it. vJust like a cut when you remove the bandage, you want to do it carefully. The fresh air will allow the tattoo breathe and begin to heal. vAfter removing your bandage you want to clean your tattoo to remove any blood, excess ink, etc. To do this use 16 >> JUICE

lukewarm water and antibacterial soap, patting with a dry cloth. Try not to rub. vDuring the healing process you need to avoid too much water. Showers will be fine but swimming and baths are out of the question for a good couple of weeks.

Give Your Tattoo the Right Care vYou should then massage some healing ointment into the skin and do this for the first few days of having the tattoo.

After that you should move to a plain skin ointment that is free of any chemicals that would cause irritation or damage to the tattoo. vThe Sun can be a big danger to your tattoo. For the first two weeks of having your tattoo, refrain from tanning and then if you must after that apply SPF 50 to avoid fading. vAfter a few days of having your tattoo you will notice a slight scabbing of your tattoo. It is important for you to make sure not to scratch or pick as you could cause permanent damage.

This guide will provide you with both aerobic training and aerobic to make your all round health and fitness the best it can be. If you do decide to undertake a training program you have to stick to it.

gym music

By Jack Stanton

Need some inspiration when you hit the Gym? These tunes should get you sorted...

Y

ou arrive at the gym, get changed, finally get the machine you were waiting for and turn on your iPod. Enrique Inglesias? How is he going to help you get through this workout? Music can be an important part of your exercise. Not only can it distract you from time, meaning you spend longer on the treadmill than you normally would, it also provides a steady rhythm for you to work to. Perhaps most importantly, it is enjoyable. Exercise CD compilations and DVDs will often lead you to believe that the best music to work out to is dance music peddled by the Ministry of Sound and Hedkandi every week. But why should this be? Finding a steady rhythm doesn’t mean punishing yourself with soul destroying Euro-dance. Here are some suggestions from different genres that are not only fantastic songs, but are guaranteed to get you pumped and motivated when you hit the gym:

Curtis Mayfield – Move On Up

This is about as motivating and inspiring as it can get. When those horns kick in, you’ll be struggling to stop dancing, let alone exercising!

OutKast - B.O.B.

Possibly one of the fastest hip-hop tracks to have come out in the last ten years. It is therefore perfect for finding your rhythm on the treadmill.

The Doors – Break On Through...

Fast. Rocking. Head bangingly good. Stick this track on when you are lifting weights and you will become Popeye without even realising... Scanned images

Frank Zappa – Peaches En Regalia

This awe-inspiring instrumental will make you think of nature and the countryside, so stick it on when you are on the rowing machine, close your eyes and you’ll drift away…

It gives you live feedback; you can download new training straight from your Mac or PC and see your progression throughout the sessions. Choose time slot to run and make the most of it in music with the application PowerSong.

acfb

Powersong keeps you on track! This application helps you maintaining your mojo throughout your effort with dynamic songs and stops at the end of your training. A live chronometer let you know the distance you ran and how long you have been running for within the playlist. How does it work? Nike Sport Kit works with two receptors, one plugged directly into your Ipod Nano and the other one placed in your shoes with the mini Nike pocket included in the Nike Sport Kit. When starting your jogging, the receptor placed in your shoe sends information to your Ipod: chronometer, rhythm and calories burned. And if you want to be informed without checking your Ipod, then you can settle the vocal option that gives you live feedback at each level of your workout. Once back home, you synchronise your ipod into your computer and transfer the data to iTunes and nikeplus.com where you can evaluate your performance, change training levels to progressively reach your goal and even defeat other runners in virtual races.

Wii Fit After Wii Sport, Nintendo is branding the new way of staying in shape with personalized coaching accessible from your living room: Wii fit! Wii Fit works with a balance board that helps you find your inner balance. The program suits any kind of goal you want to reach: stay in shape, loose a few pounds, build your muscles, focus on particular areas - Wii Fit has it all. And the best part is that it is a real enjoyment! Try to win the race against a little dog and achieve simple exercise for a perfect body with easy movements from your personal interactive coach. Thanks to the high precision of its balance board, Wii Fit corrects your posture to make the best of your training, it also calculates your weight, your gravity center and at what speed you accomplish the different exercises and positions. You can progressively improve your training with the intermediate level and it keeps you motivated and feeling good about yourself with noticeable results at the end of each session or level.
