West Park Mental Hospital was one of a cluster of five Mental Hospitals located in Epsom, Surrey. West Park opened in 1923 and catered for around 2000 patients. From the mid 1990’s patients started to be released back into the community. In 2003 majority of the hospital was closed, the remaining patients were released and the hospital was left abandoned. This was the story for mental hospitals throughout the UK, due to the Government scheme ‘care in the community’.
