Bauer Bodoni typeface specimen process book fall 2012 beginning typography suzanne choi


First, i traced letters to understand characteristics of the typeface, and to choose 9 to 11 letters that represent typeface the best.


Then, i generated many 9grid squares by hand and illustrator to understand typeface better.


I tried rotating letters, but those playful mood doesn’t fit with bauer bodoni’s elegant voice.


So, instead of rotating, i chose to move letters horizontally and vertically to create interest in composition.


I tried mixing capital letters and lowercase letters, but I didn’t like that big contrast in sizes.

like i being isolated but does not speak to voice of typeface

b and &: tension y: move to right generally looks like a circle...

things to consider more: f and y : little to close &: weird cropping/ takes up too much spcae a and b: little too close?

After many composition studies, i chose this as my final because i like the movement it creates and quite and delicate mood the white spaces between letters creates , which speaks to the voice of bauer bodoni font. but still... it is not satisfying.

But.. any of those composition was satisfied to me.

like this one the best ! nice balance between letters.

After more explorations and refinement... i came up with this composition as my final.

So, i tried to make every pages speak the same language. The ones on the first column hold the feeling of SET the most.

The left one not only looks like a set, but also best speaks to Bauer Bodoniâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s delicate/elegant voice. So i chose those ones as my final.
