To challenge the limit of the stilt structure from existing fisherman dwellings and to derive the most from it to create a community that can encourage the dialogue between the water network, the old and the new dwelling

The housing project is located in Tai O, a fisherman village at the southwest of Hong Kong. Tai O is home to a large community of Tanka people who are strongly tied to the sea. They mainly live on fishing, dried seafood and salt making. They live half on water, half on land and they have built their home on stilts so they can access to their home direct from the sea. 05

Crowded Dwelling Tanka people have small and condensed community and they live close to each other. The stilt houses are built adjoining to each other, sometimes sharing the same structure frame, can collectively create a stronger aggregation to go again natural disasters such as typhoon, which often happens in Tai O. The Site Because the individual units are so closely packed together, this could bring about other severe problems. In 2000, a cluster of stilt houses caught on fire, the fire spread rapidly and 90 stilt houses covering about 1900 sqm were burnt to ashes. Hence the empty land becomes the site for the new housing scheme. Stilt House Arrangement A typical stilt house has two openings, one side is connected to the bridge and the other side is facing the sea for direct entry from the boat. As a result, the stilt houses are built along the edges of the ground, pointing to the sea. With the cluttered nature of the stilt houses, the bridge connecting the ground to the stilt houses has to be built following the arrangement and creates a branch-like network. Inefficient Circulation The bridge is too narrow and the meandering network takes longer time for the residence to reach home from the ground. The narrow canal also makes it difficult for more than two boats to pass through at the same time.

01 | Stilt House Typology Analysis For example, some would compart more space as deck area for sun-drying seafood as family business; some would create extended deck to provide public space and blur the division between public and private space to encourage the interaction with other villagers. 02 | Site Cross Section | The site cross section shows the relationship between sea level, stilt houses and ground. 01-02 | Plans The housing scheme has two levels. The units are strategically arranged in a way that the roof of the lower units can serve as a public communal space for the upper units. For overlapping units there are a certain offset of space to allow sunlight to pass through onto the lower units. 03 | Section The units are hanging on the structure 6 meters above the deck, leaving a lot of space on the deck area for different functions. The level of opening controls the wind and light while the amount of opening controls the privacy for different room purpose.

The placement of stairs is according to where the family units are located. Some may be located in the corridor while some are exclusively located inside family units for private use. The flights of stairs owned by individual families connect the bedrooms at the two highest levels to the storage and kitchen areas at second floor and first floor respectively. structural grid in coherence with grid for shifting roof space shaping public and semi-public circulation 01 | Typical vs Prototype shifting of units tovs createExisting circulation The typical tulou has 4 vertical towers of stairs as access points, whereas in the investigated tulou random flights of stairs were owned individually by different families. In the prototype, public stairs are integrated into the modules and double as a roof for the inhabitants inside the module. This creates the possibily of the formation of a continuous circulation for interaction. 02 | Design Development The arrangement is guided by a radial grid system. Units are stacked vertically in grid and then the units are shifted to create circulation. The roof space of each unit can shape public and semi-public circulation. 03 | Circulation The exploded axonometric drawing shows the interactive circulations created by shifting of units.

The partially exposed grid allows for flexibility and defines space within the tulou. To create an interactive and vivid environment for the children to gain knowledge, using various hierarchy of space and different forms to create different spatial experience for the young users.

“Parallel”

The library project is located in Hongkou District of Shanghai. That area is a conjunction of where the old and new programs are all around it. The site lacks recreation facilities that the neighborhood needs. Children are very important to a traditional Chinese family and there are a lot of families in the neighbourhood. Therefore, considering the lack of facilities for the young generation.

01 | Plan There are mainly two sections, the outer ring and inner 4ring. The outer ring is for the parents and the 1 inner ring is for the children. The outer ring is wrapping the inner ring, just like how the loving parents 1. Outdoor Theatre embrace their kids. The inner ring is scattered into five smaller sectionsB’ for five different programs but B 2. Activity Room 3. Lobby the entrance of each is always from the outer ring. 4. Entrance 02 | Section Section B-B’ Different sections of the inner ring has different floor height depending how the height of the targeted 1:50 children. Tokyo Cemetery

“Memento Mori �

Our design proposal is a material prototype to challenge how death is represented and suggest a new form of coexistence with living. Here propose a facade system which accommodates body remains in a form of masonry. Likewise, the facade installation can be regarded as a symbolic gesture to celebrate the accomplishment of the ancestors and adopting the demise into the urban spaces. Unlike the typical cemetery layout, the facade system turns body remains into architectural elements - bricks and consists of framework structure with glass blocks. The bricks and blocks are compacted efficiently in masonry form. The facade is highly porous and designed to be filled up with the urn-bricks as time goes by.

“Room Escape”

ORGANIZATION: BLANK SPACE \ THEME: FAIRY TALE

“Room Escape” tells a game story of how the main character tries to escape the alien place by completing the levels and finally realising he can never leave the place, being a virtual character. The virtual world in this story was providing a alternative perspective to different ridiculous living conditions in Hong Kong. The story was a metaphor showing the limited power in the hands of the people as a result of the economy being dominated by the big corporates.
