BY SUTTON PLACE RESIDENT PRISCILLA MCOSTRICH
Introducing Sparkle Lilystar McOstrich, my 100% pure 5.5-year-old toy poodle (people always ask, "Is she really all poodle?"). Sparkle is well known throughout Sutton Place by the doormen, other dog parents, her group that meets in our 57th Street Park. Everyone seems to know her name.
She is a diva, a fashionista, a very social butterfly, and a clown. There are certain ladies for whom she will cry and scream to greet, and she knows them by name.
Sparkle loves Retrievers, Huskies and Bernese Mountain Dogs. (Always looking for a new boyfriend.) Her real boyfriend at home is Snuggle teddybear from the Downy commercials.
She is a TV addict and knows all the commercials with animals in it. Every night she watches a half hour of "Worlds Funniest Animals" or "America's Funniest Videos" or "The Lion King." Ambulances make her howl like a large wolf! To ride around in her carriage is a very special treat; she thinks she is a princess. In fact, she will be, with her large line of holiday greeting cards she will soon be selling under “Sparkle Of Sutton Place.”

Born in Colombia in 1995, María Paula Rodríguez Gonzalez has developed a unique style that combines the tactile and expressive qualities of hand drawing with the block printmaking technique.
Known for her realistic hand drawings of the human figure, Paula uses pastels and charcoal to capture the subtleties of human anatomy, including the play of light and shadow, the texture of skin, and the expression of emotion. The precision in her line work and expertise in shading not only demonstrates her mastery of technique but also her ability to imbue her subjects with a sense of life and vitality, making each piece a compelling study of the human condition.
Her block prints, on the other hand, allow her to explore a different set of themes and styles. In this medium, she creates bold, graphic compositions that often incorporate elements of symbolism and narrative. Her prints range from abstract designs to realistic imagery, showcasing her expertise in design, hand drawing, carving, and printing, which adds a tactile dimension to her work, emphasizing texture and form.
Her most famous work, "Precolombinos," is a pre-Colombian collection that demonstrates admiration for ancient Colombian culture and captures the rich symbolism and intricate patterns characteristic thereof. Her work has been celebrated for its ability to bring historical themes into the present, engaging viewers with both its visual beauty and cultural depth. These prints have been exhibited in galleries and art shows, earning acclaim for their craftsmanship and their ability to connect historical art forms with modern narratives.
Taita Tairona
Inspiration: From the Tairona pre-Colombian culture, which flourished between approximately 200 AD and 1600 AD, this priest Taita Tairona refers to a spiritual leader, elder, or shaman. It denotes someone who holds wisdom, spiritual knowledge, and often acts as an intermediary between the community and the spiritual world. Laminated, hammered and embossed in gold, this object symbolizes the art of goldsmithing. Technique: Block Printmaking

Owner Roberto Levinson began his career in hospital administration in his hometown of Monterrey, Mexico. After some time in the field, he realized that hospitals often fell short in regard to the true meaning of hospitality, despite the word's origins. Determined to change this, he played an instrumental role within his team, setting a new standard for patient care in the country, driven by his belief that the power of hospitality can change the world. Infusing his leadership with positivity, he frequently used the term "ánimo" to encourage his colleagues. This Spanish word, difficult to translate directly into English, embodies a spirit of cheer and perseverance. Through his inspiring use of ánimo, Roberto personified the spirit of hospitality, weaving it seamlessly into his mission and into the essence of his work.
Sundays are steeped in tradition for many families, offering an opportunity to rest and recharge from the week. Whether it’s a roast, dim sum, or in my case — pasta and sauce — food is the essential root of many cherished gatherings. For Roberto, Sunday always came with the promise of a family breakfast at his neighborhood
BY TURTLE BAY RESIDENT JULES ESPOSITO
spot, where he fondly recalls catching up over coffee, hotcakes, chilaquiles, and more. These sacred moments left a lasting impact on his appreciation for food and family, further nurturing the spirit of ánimo that he carried into his professional life.
When Roberto relocated to New York City to further his studies, he soon found himself missing his Sunday tradition and the authentic Mexican breakfasts he cherished. During the latter part of the pandemic, he felt inspired to create his own solution and began searching for locations in June 2022. Sutton Place, with its peaceful ambiance, proximity to Midtown’s energy, scenic views, and the fact that it was his own neighborhood, quickly caught his eye.
The desirable corner location was love at first sight, and Roberto quickly got to work planning what he describes as a “modern Mexican café” reminiscent of his childhood traditions. After a trip to Mexico with an interior designer friend, he gained a solid understanding of the colors, textures, and components that could evoke the same warmth as his hometown spots, but with a fresh and modern feel.
Roberto stressed the importance of building a team where everyone felt included and valued, drawing from his leadership experience in the hospital. Recognizing the value of creative freedom, he assembled a talented team with diverse backgrounds, including experience from Blank Street Coffee, Tacombi, and Falansai. Roberto provided a framework of family recipes and allowed his team to innovate and craft a menu that was both authentic and modern.
On an early morning in mid-July, I had the opportunity to get a sneak preview. Greeted by freshly baked conchas and a steaming cup of Mexican hot chocolate, I knew I was in for a treat. From hotcakes filled with “Glorias,” a Mexican treat, resembling caramel, made of goat milk and pecans, to café de olla, a robust coffee infused with orange and black pepper, every item was delicious and unlike anything I’d tried before. The highlight was the breakfast taco, featuring hand-pressed tortillas, smashed avocado, scrambled eggs, and flavorful barbacoa, served with salsa.
Any New Yorker can tell you a day in this city can feel like 10 with its many ups and downs. The excitement of catching the walk sign, the dread of missing a train, the joy of seeing a child experience the city lights for the first time...the list goes on. However, in NYC, arguably stronger than anywhere in the world, there is always a spirit of hope. And now, there is the spirit of Ánimo!

BY SUTTON PLACE RESIDENT AMANDA MACTAS
Popular Greek restaurant Souvlaki GR opened its first restaurant in downtown Manhattan back in 2011 after originally rolling out as a food truck. Co-owners Pavlos Sierros and Kostas Plagos saw an opportunity to do things a little differently here in the States, where restaurants often veered toward heavier, gyro-style sandwiches. Instead, Sierros, armed with a family recipe, wanted to offer New Yorkers a more streamlined take on the classic Greek dish, with pita sandwiches stuffed with tomatoes, onions, French fries, tzatziki, and your choice of marinated chicken, pork, or beef. Today, the Souvlaki GR brand has expanded, with three New York locations (plus the roaming food truck), as well as restaurants in Florida and Panama. Luckily, Sutton Place is home to one of those three locales, where customers can sit down among the blue-and-white Grecian isle-inspired decor and dangling bougainvillea. Since its initial opening, the restaurant has expanded its menu and now offers an array of Greek options that diners can grab to go or enjoy in-house.

SOUVLAKIGR.COM
New to the scene and ideally located right next to beloved coffee shop Dan Jones, Gy.Rose is on a mission to reinvent what it means to be fast casual. Unenthused with other on-the-go Greek options, the owners at Gy.Rose sought to craft high-end food for fast casual prices. The result is palpable in the eatery's offerings — nothing here is ever frozen or canned. Instead, the restaurant relies on real, high-caliber meat sourced from local farms, all free of hormones and antibiotics. There is careful thought put into every detail of the space, from the ingredients to the menu to the decor. The fuss-free menu gives diners a choice between a gyro, salata, or piato (plate), with a choice of protein (chicken, pork, beef, lamb, falafel, or halloumi). Everything is prepared and chopped fresh the day of, including the dips, appetizers, and side dishes.
Not to be outshone by the food, the drink menu here has also garnered quite a following, with classic Greek freddo coffees and Greek mountain tea. Similar to other grab 'n go concepts, customers can enjoy their meal right at the restaurant, order in delivery, or pick it up to take on the road.

The owners of The Naked Pig, The Horny Ram, and The Flying Cock have done it again with Turtle Bay Tavern.
Located on 2nd Ave between 51st and 52nd, you’ll find one of the newest bars in the area, Turtle Bay Tavern. While they may be new to the neighborhood, they are already cementing themselves as a local hotspot. Since opening their doors in May, we have already been repeat customers (this is rare as we love to always try new places). This is a testament to the versatility of the spot and the tasty food and drink they serve.
Turtle Bay Tavern offers a unique and inviting atmosphere, making it an ideal destination for a variety of occasions. Whether you're looking for a place to have dinner and drinks, watch a game, or simply enjoy a night out, this bar has you covered. The stylish interior and cool ambiance creates a chill environment where you can relax and unwind. The staff is friendly and very sociable, always ready to strike up a conversation, and the music is consistently playing great tunes that enhance the overall mood.
While you can usually catch us drinking Guinness or Stella at a bar, we cannot visit Turtle Bay Tavern without indulging in some of their creative cocktails. The bartenders put fun twists on old classics and craft original concoctions. Some of our favorites include the Sparkling Pomegranate Cosmo (vodka, pomegranate, lime, sparkling wine), Peni for Your Thoughts (bourbon, grapefruit, honey, ginger, spritz of Islay scotch), and Good Times (mezcal, Aperol, blackberry, pineapple, ginger beer). Although our focus is on the
drinks, it would be remiss not to mention the scrumptious food at Turtle Bay Tavern. One of our favorite appetizers in the area is their Spinach & Artichoke Dip (cheese blend, toasted baguette), while their TBT Smashed Burger (two smashed patties, American cheese, shredded lettuce, grilled pickles, secret sauce, sesame bun, tavern fries) is a must-try; we believe it’s one of the best around.
Turtle Bay Tavern is open Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 3 a.m. and open Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 a.m. On weekends, they also run a special brunch menu from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Combined with their outdoor seating, their brunch menu is perfect for starting your day off right, along with their 16oz mug specials featuring either Bloody Marys, Mimosas, or Aperol Spritzes.
With its delicious food, excellent vibe, and stellar cocktails, Turtle Bay Tavern has the potential to be a neighborhood staple. We are excited to see the reception the tavern gets with the locals, and we will surely be going back. If you haven’t checked it out quite yet, make sure to give it a try. No matter the occasion, Turtle Bay Tavern will delight.
Cheers to drinking local!

Kurant, at 1091 2nd Avenue, is one of three neighborhood restaurants owned by Amy Babic; the other two being La Cava, nearby on 2nd at 939, which opened first, in 2010, and Copinette, at 891 1st, a reader favorite, since 2018.
Firstly, Kurant is not just a wine bar. They serve high-caliber wines and other alcoholic drinks, but they also have a phenomenal food menu. "The short ribs on the dinner menu are my absolute favorite," recommends Amy, adding, "I've always strived to offer quality wines at great prices." They serve American fare with a daily happy hour seven days a week (until 7 p.m.!) in a comfortable dining atmosphere. Opened in 2013, Kurant offers a weekend brunch and recently reopened for lunch, Tuesday to Friday, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. All of their portions are enjoyably large, you will have to take food home.
Recently my friend and I had lunch at Kurant and we loved everything. As soon as you walk in, you feel at home. Despite their wonderful specialty cocktails, we opted for a Pinot Grigio and a Prosecco, each $13. We started with a caprese for $15 (I love mozzarella) and guacamole, also $15. Then we had a beet salad (lots of goat cheese) and a caesar salad, each $15. We kept telling each other to pace ourselves and not eat too much because there was more to come, but it was hard not to eat it all! In addition to the main courses, they have handhelds: sandwiches, wraps and burgers served with French fries or a side salad. We had to try them, so we chose a Parma Panini with prosciutto, arugula, mozzarella and pesto on a baguette, $17. As good as it sounds, it tasted even better. I, not surprisingly, had a Salmon Burger for $21. It was so good.
Then the main courses. Yes, we still weren't finished! My friend had Pesto Pasta, penne with cherry tomatoes, asparagus, parmesan and pesto sauce, for $24. I had Chicken Alfredo, fettuccine with grilled chicken breast, scallion and parsley cream, for $23. We were so full at this point and knew dessert was coming, so we nibbled and took most of it home. But what we had was delicious.
Now dessert. Oh, dessert! Anyone with a sweet tooth will go crazy. NY cheesecake, chocolate mousse and tartufo, each for $9. Their desserts are so special they are in a class by themselves. Really, you've never tasted anything like them.
If you haven't been to Kurant, or La Cava or Copinette, you are missing out. You will love each place. Well done, Amy.
Take a stroll down Madison Avenue and you'll find high-end designer labels from Chloé to Valentino. Walk through Sutton Place, and you might just cross paths with Jamie Lewis, whose style is as effortlessly chic as these designers she once represented. At 34, Jamie has made a name for herself as a personal stylist, transforming wardrobes and boosting confidence throughout the neighborhood and across the country for the past four years. Her journey to becoming a fashion maven began when she moved to NYC to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology, earning B.S. degrees in advertising and marketing. With over a decade of experience in luxury retail, Jamie has worked with top designers and was a brand ambassador for Celine at Saks Fifth Avenue before launching her own personal styling business, JBL Styles.
During her time at Saks, Jamie discovered her true passion for styling. She loved dressing clients from various departments and creating unique outfit combinations. When COVID hit, she saw an opportunity to branch out on her own. Jamie gives each client a unique experience, showing them how to re-wear pieces they already own and curating outfits that meet their lifestyle and aesthetic goals. “Starting JBL Styles and having the opportunity to meet all these fabulous women and watching them fall back in love with their style has been a truly rewarding experience,” shares Jamie. Many of her clients reside in Sutton Place, where she spends her days in closets, helping women rediscover their love for fashion.
The process with JBL Styles begins with a meticulous review of your wardrobe. “Everything begins with a great edit,” Jamie explains. “We start with your wardrobe and edit out all the pieces which no longer serve you, for a clean start.” This step ensures a comprehensive understanding of what you have and what you need. Jamie’s philosophy is to highlight the gems already in your closet, offering a fresh perspective on how to bring them to life.
Next comes the shopping experience, which Jamie describes as unparalleled: “You’ve never experienced shopping quite like this. Every detail is tailored just for you and your specific needs...and it’s fun!” Whether in-store with a VIP experience or at home with a perfectly curated room, this step is all about focusing on yourself and finding the right pieces that elevate your style.
The final step is the re-style, where Jamie integrates your trusted favorites with new, exciting pieces to showcase you at your best. “Rediscover your best style,” she encourages. Each completed look is photographed and compiled into a digital lookbook for easy access, allowing you to recreate your fabulous outfits effortlessly.
Jamie emphasizes that her styling is not just about acquiring new items but about understanding quality over quantity. “Your shopping experience is with a purpose and an understanding of where to invest in the right pieces." This thoughtful approach leaves clients with looks they might not
have chosen themselves, while pleasantly pushing them out of their comfort zones.
Jamie's solo spare time, though rare, is spent exploring vintage boutiques and thrift shops, finding gems that can be reworked into her wardrobe or given new life through slight alterations. This hobby perfectly complements her professional life, allowing her to bring a unique touch to her styling business.
Balancing her career with her personal life, Jamie's sons, Benjamin (Benji) and Solomon (Sollie), are a vibrant part of her life. Benji, 6, loves taking Taekwondo at Leader Sports on the Upper East Side, while 2-year-old Sollie can often be seen running around the neighborhood, especially on the grass turf on 54th Street. Benji had a fantastic kindergarten year at PS 59, making new friends he sees all around the neighborhood. Sollie is just beginning his journey at Kaplan Nursery School, following in his brother 's footsteps. In the evenings, the three of them often spend time coloring, with Benji's current favorite subjects being Spider-Man and their own creative superhero iterations. “If you see us around, definitely say hi — maybe there's a future playdate with the kids!” Jamie says with a smile. You might spot them at La Villetta, their go-to spot for weekend lunches, or at The Greats of Craft, where Jamie often enjoys a refreshing iced tea and a cozy workspace. Body image concerns can profoundly impact the way you view yourself and your overall emotional well-being. Unrealistic perceptions of one’s body often leads to feelings of low self-esteem, low self-worth, and insecurity.
We are not born hating or dissatisfied with our bodies. Our own perception of our bodies is learned. Therefore, you can learn to become more accepting of your body, less critical of your looks, and ultimately more at home in your own skin.
Be mindful of social media consumption
Social media promotes unrealistic beauty standards and ideals. It’s important to keep in mind that there is likely a great deal of editing going on behind the scenes; photo-editing tools and filters are the norm. Try taking social media breaks and unfollow anyone you find triggering. When you choose to go online, remember to be mindful of what you’re consuming.
Often, body image concerns lead to a preoccupation and a great deal of time spent focusing on one’s body. The amount of time and energy spent focusing on one’s body only fosters further negative thinking and feelings. Retrain your attention to decrease the amount of time spent focusing on your appearance. When you catch yourself focusing on your body image, practice mindfulness by nonjudgmentally bringing your attention back to the present. Try paying attention to your breath or any task you’re engaged in as an anchor to the here-and-now.
With body image concerns, you likely judge yourself based off of your body image and perceived flaws. Acknowledge that you are a whole person beyond your physical appearance. List all your qualities, abilities, achievements and roles that make you the full and unique
person you are. Maybe you’re a daughter, a friend, hardworking, compassionate, curious, and someone with integrity. The point is, you’re a multifaceted, complex person who is more than just any one body part or physical appearance.
Acknowledge and celebrate your body for all it is capable of rather than solely focusing on your looks and appearance. You can do this through practicing self-compassion and speaking to yourself like a cherished friend. Chances are you speak to your loved ones in a more loving way than you do yourself. When you actively turn this kindness inward, you can experience a true shift in your mood and thinking. Finally, treat your body with respect and kindness. Nurture yourself by engaging in activities that make you feel good and spark joy from the inside out.
If you find yourself preoccupied with worry, or that your anxiety is interfering with your daily life, it can be helpful to speak with a trusted psychotherapist to improve your coping skills.

EXPERT INSIGHT: AWARENESS MONTH
BY LOCAL EXPERT DR. GARY LINKOV
I get asked about my hair (or lack of it) a lot. That’s not too surprising considering I’m a bald hair transplant surgeon.
I’ve been very open about my experience with alopecia areata universalis — the autoimmune condition that causes all my hair follicles to become the targets of the very immune system that’s meant to protect them. Though I’ve come to accept and appreciate my condition and the perspective it’s given me, there was a point not too long ago when I wondered whether people would want hair loss advice from a surgeon who did not have hair.
The onset of alopecia areata can happen fast — patches on the legs, arms or head that come and go or progress to more severe hair loss, like mine did. The diagnosis of alopecia areata is made from a patient’s hair loss history and
pattern. When a biopsy is done, it typically reveals immune cells collecting around the base of the hair follicle.
My first brush with alopecia areata was during medical school when I noticed patches of hair loss on my arms and legs. It wasn’t until a decade later, at the end of my facial plastic surgery fellowship, that I noticed hair loss on my head — a small patch on the left side. That hair loss bothered me, so I took steroid injections. The patch went away, and things went back to normal — for a while.
On December 7, 2019, I woke up with Bell’s palsy, a neurological disorder that causes paralysis or weakness on one side of the face. After that, I started to lose my hair rapidly. By the summer, my hair was so thin that I shaved off the little hair I had left and never looked back. I had bigger concerns: my nails became brittle, which had consequences for my being able to perform surgery, and I had lost my eyelashes, which are important for protecting the eyes.
There are a variety of treatments out there now for alopecia areata, aimed at inhibiting or ‘retraining’ the immune system: steroid injections, PRP, squaric acid, classic immunotherapy, and JAK inhibitors — a class of medications effective at suppressing the immune system but which come with many potential side effects. Patients with alopecia areata are not candidates for hair transplant surgery.
As far as prognosis goes, it depends on the severity. Alopecia areata can be mild, coming and going, or it can progress to a more severe, all-encompassing form. There’s no way to predict who will experience a mild or severe case, or who will respond best to each treatment, though there are triggers — viruses, allergies and stress — that can put your immune system into overdrive and aggravate the condition.
Since 2019, I’ve had episodes of minimal hair regrowth and my nails have improved. I don’t expect to regrow the hair I had, as only 10% of alopecia areata patients get their original hair back. However, because of my experience with this condition, I know firsthand how difficult dealing with any hair loss can be. My alopecia areata has allowed me to connect with my patients in a unique way and truly understand how hair loss can have a dramatic impact on a person’s life.

At the Child Mind Institute, the mission is clear: Transform the lives of children and families grappling with mental health and learning disorders through comprehensive evaluations and gold-standard treatments. One member of the team leading this charge is Dr. Laura Phillips (PsyD, ABPdN), the senior director and a senior neuropsychologist in the Learning and Development Center. With nearly a decade of dedication to this organization, Dr. Phillips is at the forefront of providing critical support and innovative solutions to those in need. We caught up with her to learn more about her work and what drives her.
Q: DR. PHILLIPS, CAN YOU GIVE US AN OVERVIEW OF YOUR ROLE AT THE CHILD MIND INSTITUTE?
DR. PHILLIPS: Absolutely. I've been with the Institute for 9.5 years — initially as an attending neuropsychologist for 7 years, and, for the last 2.5 years, as the senior director of the Learning and Development Center. In addition to working within the clinic, I also helped to develop and pilot a grant-funded remedial reading program that continues to deliver evidence- and phonics-based multi-sensory instruction in small groups to at-risk readers in first and second grades at under-resourced community schools.
Susan came highly recommended by our closest
Q: THAT’S IMPRESSIVE! HOW DOES THE PHILOSOPHY OF THE CHILD MIND INSTITUTE GUIDE YOUR WORK?
DR. PHILLIPS: Our core belief is that mental health and learning disorders are real, common, and treatable. We focus on identifying and understanding the barriers that prevent children from reaching their full potential across all areas of their lives. This approach involves using research-based practices that are proven to be effective. We offer comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations, along with targeted autism evaluations, and a variety of individual and group-based therapeutic interventions, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), behavioral parent training (BPT), exposure and response prevention (ERP), applied behavioral analysis (ABA), behavior therapy, social communication groups, and mindfulness-based approaches.
Q: YOUR APPROACH SOUNDS INCREDIBLY THOROUGH. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU PERSONALLY IN YOUR ROLE?
DR. PHILLIPS: My biggest motivation comes from hearing about the positive changes in the lives of the children we work with, as shared by their families years later. Knowing that our efforts lead to improvements in their self-perception and overall well-being is what makes my work so fulfilling. I’m continually amazed by children’s resilience. With the right support and interventions, we can have a profound impact on their self-esteem and overall well-being. It’s incredible to see how they overcome obstacles and thrive, which fills me with hope and confidence in their futures.
Q: WHAT’S ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE PARTS OF WORKING WITH CHILDREN?
DR. PHILLIPS: My workday is inherently fun because I often spend hours talking to and/or engaging with children. I love watching them process new information or work through a challenge. I get so much joy and amusement from listening to the answers they come up with and the stories they spontaneously share, both of which give so much insight into how they perceive what is going on around them.
Q: IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE A REWARDING AND LIVELY WORK ENVIRONMENT. WHAT ABOUT YOUR LIFE OUTSIDE OF WORK? CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR FAMILY AND HOW YOU SPEND YOUR TIME ?
DR. PHILLIPS : I live on the Upper East Side with my husband and our two young daughters. I’m actively involved in their schools and also serve on the Parenting Center Advisory Committee at the 92NY. Our weekends are a whirlwind of activities — enjoying NYC’s parks, zoos and museums, as well as community events. We’re busy with extracurriculars and birthday parties, but I cherish every moment and wouldn’t change a thing.
The Child Mind Institute is located at 215 E 50th Street. Visit their website at childmind.org for more information on how they’re transforming the lives of children and families in our neighborhood and beyond.

New York City is teeming with talented pianists, and Natalia Huang is helping shape the next generation. It 's no surprise that Natalia Huang Piano Studio has become a reader-recommended favorite, known for transforming the lives of students through the power of piano. Natalia, who used to live in New York City but now resides in Los Angeles, has established her studio locations in New York, Connecticut, and California. Since 2011, Natalia and her team have been enriching lives and creating memorable learning experiences.
Q: TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY.
NATALIA HUANG: I live in Los Angeles with my husband Michael, and our three children: Juliana (15), William (13), and Jasmine (11). All three play piano, not to become pianists, but
because I believe in the long-term benefits of playing. We also have a 3-year-old dog named Tater. I’m active in my children’s schools and have served as PTA president for two schools. Currently, I’m on the PTO Board at my child’s middle school.
Q: NATALIA, CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS AND WHAT YOU PROVIDE TO THE COMMUNITY?
NATALIA HUANG: At Natalia Huang Piano Studio, we provide personalized piano lessons for students ages three and older. We aim to serve families who have a deep appreciation for music education. Our goal is to establish ourselves as a leading piano school, renowned for quality education and memorable learning experiences. We’re committed to fostering an environment of collaboration, passion for the arts, and personal growth. Through our lessons, we inspire communities by spreading the joy of piano playing and transforming lives through music.
Q: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED WITH THE STUDIO, AND WHAT BROUGHT YOU INTO THIS LINE OF WORK?
NATALIA HUANG: The studio has been around since 2011. I decided to teach piano because one of my teachers made me fall in love with playing, despite my early reluctance (I used to write “I hate piano” in the back of my piano books). Expanding into a piano school was unexpected. I knew moving was inevitable as I started my family, but I didn't want to lose the studio I worked so hard to build. Renting a space and hiring more teachers to help with the growing number of students was the solution, and that’s how we grew into a full-fledged piano school!
Q: WHAT’S THE PHILOSOPHY BEHIND NATALIA HUANG PIANO STUDIO?
NATALIA HUANG: We are all about the joy of piano playing! We use the piano as a tool to foster a lifelong appreciation of music. We believe that students who stick with learning for years gain valuable life lessons that benefit them in many areas. They learn how to handle stress, meet deadlines, and conquer challenges — skills that are essential in life.
Q: WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR WORK AND WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION?
NATALIA HUANG: I absolutely love the community we have built with our teachers, staff, students, and parents. Watching students grow musically and mature into young adults is incredibly rewarding. It’s bittersweet when seniors leave our studio, but it’s one of the best parts of the job. Not many occupations offer the chance to witness a child’s growth over the years.
Q: WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO PARENTS THINKING ABOUT PIANO LESSONS FOR THEIR CHILD?
NATALIA HUANG: Playing piano is a journey. It doesn’t happen overnight, and the benefits aren’t always immediately apparent. Parents often worry about forcing their children to play, but there’s a difference between instilling discipline and forcing them. In the US, learning an instrument is often seen as a hobby rather than part of education, leading to children giving up easily and regretting it later. For adults, playing piano is therapeutic and fulfilling — you don’t need to be a concert pianist to enjoy it.
Q: WHAT ARE SOME UNIQUE WAYS YOU KEEP YOUR PIANO LESSONS ENGAGING AND FUN FOR STUDENTS?
NATALIA HUANG: I used to think I was an amazing teacher because parents would say, "Wow, I can’t believe you got my child to do that; he/she wouldn’t listen to me!" But now that I have children, I realize most students will listen to anyone else except their parents! We make teaching fun by thinking outside the box. We create interesting
practice challenges, like winning a goldfish or receiving scratch-off tickets or a s’mores kit. Our concerts also provide fresh musical perspectives by collaborating with dance companies, showcasing original compositions, and supporting local bands.

Now in its tenth year, the DOCUMENTING DECO PROGRAM brings the thrill of New York City's famed Art Deco icons to students in NYC schools, including those in our own Sutton neighborhood at The High School of Art & Design.
The Art Deco Society of New York (ADSNY), a nonprofit volunteer organization founded in 1981 to preserve, celebrate, and educate the public about New York ' s great Art Deco Jazz Age legacy, has been headquartered in our community since 2013, when Sutton resident Roberta Nusim became its volunteer president.
“Everyone knows New York 's great Art Deco icons — many in and close to our neighborhood. The Beekman Tower, Waldorf Astoria, the GE Building, Rockefeller Center, as well as the Deco gems along 42nd Street: the Daily News, Chrysler and Chanin buildings. But there are many lovely residential and commercial buildings in the Sutton area and throughout the city boasting the Art Deco style, buildings that we pass each day but may never notice. Through classroom lessons and neighborhood walking tours, Documenting Deco is designed to open the eyes of youngsters and their families to this distinctive architectural movement that makes New York City so special,” Nusim explains.
ADSNY's teaching artist, Rachel Sanchez, has been bringing Documenting Deco to students in schools throughout the city, including The High School of Art & Design, which has participated in Documenting Deco for the past five years. Lessons teach design elements, motifs, and features of Art Deco buildings and motivate students to think about factors that architects must consider when designing a building.
According to Sanchez, “The students at Art & Design high school never cease to amaze me. When I ask them
to sketch a building at the beginning of the lessons, they take out their rulers, compasses and T-squares, and begin working. But once the students learn about and are shown examples of Art Deco design in buildings throughout New York City, they go back to their original sketches and redesign their buildings by including elements of Art Deco. Their designs may feature wrap-around windows, chevrons, massing, sunbursts, streamlining, and other typical Deco elements. Mrs. Singh, their instructor, is as enthusiastic as the students, as she circulates the room, providing students with suggestions on how to improve upon their drawings. This spring, Mrs. Singh's students did such a magnificent job designing their Art Deco buildings that many of them appeared in a school-wide art show. It 's always an honor to work with the students at Art & Design high school.”
Art & Design is one of many K–12 schools that have participated in Documenting Deco over the past decade. This free ADSNY program is funded by donations from its generous members, as well as grants from New York City's Cultural Development Fund and New York State's Council on the Arts. During the pandemic, a generous donation from one ADSNY member helped the Society transform the program from in-person to online, with Art Deco Dream City's engaging interactive materials for teachers and families to use with children of all ages, from preschool tots to high school teens.
Today, both the school program, Documenting Deco, and the family activities of ART DECO DREAM CITY are available free online on the Art Deco Society of New York’s website at www.artdeco.org/learn . Both programs give young people the opportunity to make a personal connection with the visual world around them and see their neighborhoods through new eyes in our ever-changing city.
If you would like to suggest a school to participate in this program, contact the Art Deco Society of New York at info@artdeco.org.
