Does it make sense to put my apartment on the market during the holidays or is it a waste of time? - CURIOUS SELLER
DEAR CURIOUS,
People are so busy during the holidays that you might think nobody has time to look for an apartment. But there are several reasons that the holidays can be a good time to sell. First, those people who are actively looking during the busy holiday season tend to be serious buyers and ready to make a decision. Second, the holidays emphasize family and home, which may prompt people to decide to look for a new home that is more suitable to their needs. 吀栀ird, people may be inclined to make important decisions like buying a home before the New Year so they can put that process behind them and look forward to their new home in the coming year. You can even take advantage of the holidays to enhance your property with festive decor! (Just keep it classy.) So don’t let the holiday season hold you back!

ART DECO TOYS OF THE 1920S–1930S ART DECO SOCIETY OF NEW YORK
Tues, Dec 10, 6:30–8pm Virtual Zoom Event
Toys, like other material culture, are reflections of the larger society in which they were created. While crafted for children, toys were most often purchased for children by adults, and it is not surprising that adults would seek toys that reflected the popular style of the period. While a parent may not have been able to afford a home in the Art Deco style, providing a dollhouse version of this to a child may have helped to fill that void for the adult. Join Amy McKune, Curator / Senior Manager of Collections, for an indepth look at some of these Art Deco-inspired treasures from the collection. Benshi, Japan's riveting “movie talkers” of the silent film era, drew in audiences with their live film narration and dramatic character portrayals, often with musicians providing accompaniment. This rich period of early Japanese cinema has a direct structural connection to the Japanese puppet theater tradition, in which chanters narrated stories and gave voice to silent puppets alongside theatrical shamisen music. In this two-night program, modern benshi star Ichiro Kataoka and NY-based shamisen player Sumie Kaneko come together for two screenings of stories set in the samurai era. Introducing Pumpkin Wagner, a 6-year-old 100% pure French Bulldog. Pumpkin has called Turtle Bay & Sutton Place home since she was a pup, spending her entire life charming neighbors and fellow dog lovers. She has a big personality packed into a small body, often seen playing the role of "referee" when romping around with larger dogs at Peter Detmold Park.
Pumpkin also has a knack for winning over doormen with her adorable antics, always on the lookout for treats. Despite her sweet and cuddly side, Pumpkin can be stubborn, especially when she catches sight of a scooter — her favorite obsession. She'll screech with excitement, as if begging to hop on and ride off into the sunset. Friendly, playful, and a bit pesky, Pumpkin is the life of the block, adored by her loving owners, Barbara and Steve Wagner, and anyone who meets her.

Pub Crawl Strangelove
BY APRIL COVER STARS LIAM DOUGHERTY & LUKE ROBINSON
Located on 53rd between 2nd and 3rd, you will find the ultimate punk rock dive bar, Strangelove. Strangelove stands out with its unapologetically gritty, graffiti-covered walls and no-frills ambiance, making it a unique gem in the neighborhood.
This spot is a one-of-a-kind find that offers a raw, genuine experience that we are lucky to have so close by.
Strangelove isn’t trying to be all things to all people, and that’s what makes it so special. For those who love cheap beer paired with punk rock music and an atmosphere that’s proudly unconventional, Strangelove is your new haven. This is not the place to sip on fancy cocktails or settle into plush seating, but rather to immerse yourself in an authentically punk environment.
The motto at Strangelove is simple: “Cheap Beer & Punk Rock” — and they deliver on it with some of the best deals you’ll find in Manhattan. Specials include a $6 beer-and-shot combo, $7 well drinks, and $9 draft pints. Whether you're there to experience the energy of the punk crowd or to enjoy these unbeatable deals, you're in for an evening of memorable moments.
You can expect to meet a diverse crowd here, a mix of punk enthusiasts, local dive bar regulars, and the curious passersby looking for something out of the ordinary. The staff at Strangelove is as genuine as the atmosphere, bringing a down-to-earth, approachable attitude that complements the bar’s no-pretenses vibe. The bartenders embrace the punk aesthetic and, together with the patrons, help foster an environment that feels welcoming and unfiltered.
Strangelove’s location is a major perk, just a short walk from the M, E, and 6 subway lines. It's a convenient stop whether you’re coming or going. This accessibility has made it a favorite spot for us when we want a quick drink before hopping on the subway or returning to the neighborhood at the end of a night out. Plus, it’s the perfect spot to bring friends visiting from out of town who are looking for something unforgettable and off the beaten path.
If you find yourself wanting more of the same, Strangelove has two sister bars: Clockwork in the Lower East Side and Lucky Lyndon in Kips Bay. Both bars share the same punk rock essence, graffiti-laden interiors, and affordable drink prices, making them local mainstays for dive bar lovers. Strangelove is a place where the drinks are cheap, the music is loud, and the ambiance is unwaveringly punk. If you’re looking for something more alternative and want to drink locally, you’ve found your spot.

Rawmantic CHOCOLATE
BY TURTLE BAY RESIDENT JULES ESPOSITO
Transitioning from a career in luxury women's fashion to one in artisan chocolate may seem like an unlikely and even conflicting path, but for Kasia Bosne, it became her reality. Kasia moved to the U.S. from Poland to pursue her education at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), going on to work for several major fashion houses before opening her own boutique on W. 57th Street. Aside from fashion, Kasia has always maintained a passion for health and wellness, believing "fashion happens under the dress first."
Eager to expand her knowledge in this sector, she took a leap of faith and enrolled at the Hippocrates Institute in West Palm Beach. It was there that a final project focused on cacao sparked a new passion — the world of chocolate. Upon returning to New York, Kasia's fascination with its health benefits grew. As a vegan, she noticed that most commercially available products contained milk, cream, or butter, inspiring her to create a dairy-free alternative. Determined to formulate the perfect recipe, she spent significant time researching what it takes to master her craft, even spending time training at The Culinary Institute of America to work with chocolate experts. After five years of testing, she closed her boutique and launched her business just farther east on 57th Street.
Rawmantic Chocolate, with its perfectly fitting name, opened on Valentine's Day in 2017. Since then, it has expanded to serve both retail and wholesale clients, becoming a true standout for vegan consumers. Kasia's products are carried in upward of 300 stores, including 200 in New York alone. From Erewhon to Equinox and everywhere in between, her list of placement is impressive, with an equally extensive online business to match. Kasia recalls when her bars first appeared on Erewhon's shelves, they were one of only a few; today, they compete with an entire wall of similar products. What continues to set Rawmantic apart is its commitment to being completely vegan and preservative-free. Made with tapioca starch, which is naturally low on the glycemic index, the products are able to stay fresh in the fridge for up to a year.
Rawmantic offers an alternative to candy you can feel good about, with items like nutritional bars, shakes, granola, truffles, and more. When searching for the perfect gift this holiday season for your vegan — or non-vegan — friends and family, Rawmantic Chocolate has you covered.
If you were a lucky attendee of our Sutton Tower book club in November, you enjoyed organic, vegan, gluten-free Rawmantic Chocolate treats, courtesy of Kasia, as part of your luxe gift bag.

LET'S EAT LOCAL
YEZO ISANKAYA
BY LOCAL RESIDENT MIRIAM SILVERBERG
Yezo is the name of a province in northeast Thailand known for its culinary excellence. You’ve probably eaten some of their well-known dishes such as papaya salad and spicy mince salad. It’s also the name of a new restaurant on 2nd and 49th that opened September 9, owned by a charming woman, Helen, and already attracting many local Asian customers (so you know it’s authentic).
Helen was working in a Japanese restaurant here and decided to open her own — a Thai Japanese fusion, with live jazz music — and I'm so glad she did. No liquor license yet, but a lot of non-alcoholic drinks and soft drinks.
My friend and I had an appetizer of marinated grilled chicken thighs, $13.95, and a spicy corn salad with tomato, edamame and peanuts, $12.95, and an order of edamame, for $9.95. For entrees, we ordered Pad Thai Yezo, $18.95, choice of chicken, tofu or beef, with rice noodle in pad Thai sauce. Second was Khao Soi, $18.95, same choices of protein, with egg noodle served with mustard, lime and crispy egg noodle. My friend loves eggplant so we had to order a third, Eggplant Basil with rice, for $18.95. Each was as delicious as the next. Ooh, and I must not forget — we had a wonderful appetizer, Crying Tiger (if you forget to order it, you will cry!), of charcoal-grilled strip steak marinated with homemade Norn Jim Joew sauce. We also had the Salmon Clay Pot, which was grilled salmon served with garlic fried rice and topped with garlic, ikura and scallion. I love garlic and like salmon very much so I knew I would like it, and I certainly did. It was $28.95 and worth it.
For dessert, we had coconut ice cream, which we loved. We loved everything about the place. It’s roomy with large windows, service is charming and attentive, and the food outstanding.
Join us in welcoming Yezo to the neighborhood!

If you want a cool and cozy place to unwind, start the weekend at the sophisticated and friendly new Georgian restaurant, Ubani. Nestled in the heart of Midtown East, this hidden gem offers a delightful fusion of food, design, and warm hospitality.
Upon stepping into Ubani, you feel welcomed into a friend's home for dinner. The elegant yet comfortable atmosphere effortlessly blends modern design with classic Georgian charm. The menu at Ubani features traditional Georgian dishes and unique one-of-a-kind creations that appeal to newcomers and aficionados of Georgian cuisine. If you are trying Georgian food for the first time, a good place to start is with Chef Koska's unique Georgian salad. Three Georgian spices are blended with walnuts to complement the taste of farmfresh tomatoes, onions, and cucumbers. This pairs well with Adjaruli Khachapuri, a cheese boat with egg and butter on freshly baked bread, that is ideal for sharing with friends.
Next, try the Khinkali, traditional Georgian dumplings filled with beef or pork, or Kvari, dumplings filled with four cheeses, and a refreshing Georgian lemonade. If you want something heartier, try the Lamb Mtsdavi with tarragon, potatoes and plum sauce, that goes well with a robust Georgian red wine.

LAVANYA COODLY BRIDAL & COUTURE
BY FEATURE WRITER MARGARET PFOH
Lavanya Coodly Bridal and Couture has been offering bespoke and ready-to-wear luxury garments to Manhattan and beyond for over a decade. Specializing in hand embroideries and unique designs, Lavanya Coodly’s creations cater to women, men, and children seeking a thoughtfully designed, one-of-akind outfit. Her goal is simple: to help people look fabulous, feel empowered, and boost their self-confidence with every piece they wear.
“I’ve been designing all my life because it’s something I love,” Lavanya shares. Her passion for fashion turned into a viable business when she found an opportunity to work while balancing time with her son’s school and activities. Always knowing she wanted to work for herself, she officially launched her business in 2014. Lavanya has showcased her work in Arlington, Massachusetts, and Newport, Rhode Island, steadily building her clientele, and is now bringing her designs to New York City, expanding her reach to an exciting new market.
Since opening her atelier in November, on the second floor of 1300 Madison Avenue, Lavanya has fully embraced being part of the East Side community. “I see that residents here have impeccable taste and a commitment to self-care,” she notes. This new space features fabulous designs for brides and their bridal parties, including mothers, bridesmaids, and flower girls, offering a range of options for special occasions.
From the start, Lavanya Coodly Bridal and Couture has been driven by a commitment to creating timeless pieces. “We are not about wastefully generating fast fashion,” Lavanya explains. “Our clothing uses high-quality raw materials and is meant to be enjoyed for many years.” Whether it’s a custom bridal gown or a ready-to-wear piece, each garment is crafted to ensure it will stand the test of time in both style and durability
Her dedication to craftsmanship has not gone unnoticed: “We were unexpectedly discovered by the Miss India organization and given the opportunity to dress the five Miss India titleholders for overseas pageants,” she proudly recalls. This recognition brought Lavanya’s designs into the spotlight, with her creations later featured in fashion-forward magazines and on Hollywood red carpets.
For Lavanya, the true reward lies in the joy her designs bring to her clients. “I love making my clients happy when they wear one of my creations," she declares. She finds inspiration in people with a positive outlook on life who prioritize self-care and kindness to others, motivating her to create garments that look beautiful and make people feel confident and uplifted.
Balancing her thriving business with family life, Lavanya is married to a physician and is the proud mother of a son pursuing higher studies overseas.
As her brand continues to grow, Lavanya remains dedicated to crafting timeless, unique garments that empower and inspire confidence — just as she set out to do from the beginning. With each piece, she brings her passion for thoughtful, enduring fashion to the community, making the Upper East Side a little more stylish, one bespoke creation at a time.
Lavanya invites those interested in exploring her collection to make an appointment, browse the designs, and discover something special for themselves or a family member Appointments can be made by calling 917-261-4222.

HOLIDAY TIME WITH RUFUS & BLAKE
Blake Funston and Rufus Chen have created a home that is much like their marriage — a seamless blend of cultures, eras, and personal histories that reflect their shared love for art, beauty, and refinement. Their apartment, filled with carefully chosen antiques, inherited treasures, and modern touches, is a warm and welcoming space, one that speaks to their appreciation for the finer details in life. "We’ve always believed that it’s the little things, whether an antique piece passed down through family or a new find, that makes a space truly feel alive.”
Blake, 36, and Rufus, 32, first met at Wheaton College in 2011 where they both studied art history with a concentration in Renaissance art. Despite their four-year age difference — Blake was a senior, and Rufus had just started as a freshman — their connection was immediate. “We met at an international student party, and I haven’t let him out of my sight since,” laughs Blake. After navigating a long-distance relationship between Boston, London, and China, they finally found themselves in the same city, NYC, and married at City Hall in 2016, surrounded by close friends and family. Blake wanted to make sure Rufus’ background was included in the ceremony and chose flowers that represent prosperity in his husband's culture. "I almost chose chrysanthemums for the bouquet without realizing they’re traditionally used for funerals in Chinese culture. Thankfully, I went with peonies, which was correct!”
One of the many things that bind Blake and Rufus together is their shared passion for art, history, and design. From the start, Blake’s connection to design was deeply influenced by his family, particularly his mother, who worked as a flight attendant for Pan Am Airlines. During her travels, she developed a keen eye for collecting antiques, art, and furniture from around the world, pieces that have since been passed down to Blake. “Her career exposed me to a world of travel and cultural exploration from a young age, laying the foundation for my lifelong passion for art and antiques,” Blake shares with pride. “My mother and father introduced me to places like the South of France, where we spent summers in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. It was there that I first began to appreciate the allure of European art and design, much of which I grew up seeing in our home.”
Blake’s inherited love of antiques is evident in his career path. After earning a master’s degree from Christie’s Education, a program specializing in decorative arts from 1600 to 1930, he worked at Bonhams on Madison Avenue and later with renowned interior designer Juan-Pablo Molyneux. Blake became skilled in sourcing antiques for Molyneux’s lavish interiors, eventually becoming his senior interior designer. In 2021, Blake launched his own design firm, Blake Funston Designs, and quickly gained clients from New York to Colorado and beyond. "I love working with pieces that have a history,” Blake expresses thoughtfully. "The craftsmanship of older items, whether it's a French fauteuil or a Persian rug, tells a story that modern reproductions just can’t match." Many of the pieces in their apartment were inherited from his parents or were gifts from his stepmother, including family portraits and Chinese antique furniture that now occupy pride of place in their home.
Rufus, too, brings a deep understanding of history to their home, though his focus is on Chinese art. After graduating from Wheaton, he completed a year abroad in London studying Chinese art and the art market. After interning at Christie's during his senior year at Wheaton, he quickly climbed the ranks to become Associate Vice President & Head of Sale of the Chinese Art department. His career takes him around the world, particularly to Paris for the prestigious Art d'Asie sales. “I've always loved the intersection of culture and art,” Rufus explains enthusiastically. “Working at Christie's allows me to engage with both on a global scale.”
Though their professional lives are busy and filled with travel, Blake and Rufus have created a home that is a true reflection of their personalities and passions. A home where every object tells a story, and where the charm of the past meets the sophistication of the present. The move to their current apartment, a stately townhouse in the southern part of Sutton Place, was no small feat. Having lived on Katherine Hepburn Place in Turtle Bay for nearly eight years, Blake and Rufus were thrilled when their landlord offered them a move farther north. This particular building is an 1890s townhouse-style home now divided into apartments, and a large unit became available during the pandemic. Blake laughs as he remembers hauling large portraits and Turkish carpets through the streets, drawing curious looks from neighbors as they relocated their treasures. “It was quite the production,” Blake admits with a laugh, but the move was worth it. The high ceilings, fireplace, and historical charm of the townhouse allowed Blake to design the Anglo-French interior they’d always dreamed of.
The couple savours walking up Sutton Place South toward 59th Street, admiring the many exquisite townhouses along the way. The area holds links to their lives both socially and professionally. A good friend
of Blake’s lives in the iconic No. 1 Sutton Place, her exquisite home designed by a famed architect. For a Christmas party one year, she flew in a band from Monte-Carlo, Blake recalls. Renowned Chinese architect I. M. Pei lived in a stunning brick townhouse at No. 11 Sutton Place, a property Rufus became familiar with through work. Furthermore, a design studio Blake previously worked for completed the interiors of No. 7 Sutton Square. He enjoyed revisiting the property to see the French boiserie and velvet upholstered walls the firm is known for.
Travel is a significant part of their lives, heavily influenced by Blake’s parents. His father, a frequent traveler, continued the tradition of summers in the South of France with Blake and his stepmother, Christina. “The house in Villefranche-sur-Mer is a sanctuary for us,” Blake reflects warmly. “It’s a place where we can relax, enjoy the exquisite food and culture, and connect with family.” Their travels often intertwine with work; Rufus visits Paris regularly, where the couple has built traditions, from antique shopping at Saint-Ouen to exploring hidden gems in the city. “Paris has become our second home,” Rufus says fondly. “It’s a city that constantly inspires us.”
Closer to home, Blake and Rufus have developed a routine of enjoying their neighborhood’s quiet charm. From picking up floral arrangements at Flowers on First to indulging in coffee and macarons at Éclair Bakery, they’ve cultivated relationships with local businesses. “I’ve even left my antique vases with Flowers on First for arrangements — they always handle everything with care,” Blake notes appreciatively. Their go-to dinner spot is La Villetta for Italian cuisine, while brunch at Madison Diner is a favorite for its classic French music and fresh food. “Our neighborhood really feels like home. It’s a quiet, elegant corner of the city.”
Whether they're exploring museums around the world or just enjoying a day at the Met or Frick, they love diving into new experiences. Lately, Blake has found himself captivated by exhibitions at the Jewish Museum on the Upper East Side. When he’s not busy with work, Rufus enjoys keeping fit and can often be found at the Equinox on 54th and 2nd Avenue. For Blake, collecting family portraits and Chinese export porcelain has become a meaningful hobby. He’s always on the lookout for antiques with a story behind them, often visiting auction galleries like Doyle in New York or Stair Galleries in Hudson.
Though they don’t have children, Blake and Rufus embrace their roles as “gay uncles” to many friends' children, hosting gatherings and being involved in their extended community. They’ve also considered adopting a cat but are waiting for the right time to expand their household.
As they prepare for the holidays, Blake and Rufus are looking forward to spending time by the fireplace, which has become one of their favorite features of the apartment — despite the accidental misfire of their first attempt to use it. "We didn't realize the chimney hadn't been cleaned in years, and the smoke poured into the room!” Blake recalls with a laugh. Now, the fireplace is a central part of their holiday celebrations, adding warmth to their superbly curated home.
Reflecting on their life together, Blake and Rufus often come back to a motto borrowed from the iconic C.Z. Guest: “The most important thing is to enjoy yourself, and have a good time.” It’s a philosophy they live by, whether traveling the world, collecting art and antiques, or simply enjoying a quiet evening at home. As they prepare to welcome friends and family for the holiday season, their home — a seamless blend of the old and the new — stands as a testament to their shared passions and their commitment to making life as meaningful as possible.

Art for me is exploring forms, shapes, colors and lines, in an undefined form. I see lines and color as one, and through that I find objects and shapes. I use the simple line to capture the essence of movement, sound and even atmosphere. I then put the lines and color together to complement them. I experiment with boxes, squares and rectangular forms. I am never sure how a line and form will look after layering shape over shape and color over color. I create paintings with acrylic, water color, tissue paper, any found paper, and crayons. I do that by arranging them together, putting them next to each other or on top of one another and by cutting paper by hand, scissors or knife. I am concerned with the quality and the integrity of the paint itself and the quality of the flat form. I create something new that gives me an aesthetic inner pleasure and love. Through these works, every time, I see something new. I see the life, the form, and the human element.
You can visit Demi and her artwork at the Union Square Market every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, through December.

OVER TWO DECADES OF MUSIC FOR LITTLES
BY FEATURE WRITER MARGARET PFOHL
For over two decades, Little Maestros has transformed the landscape of early childhood education in the New York Tri-State area, emerging as the leading music program for infants and toddlers. Founded in 2002 by Marni Konner, Little Maestros uniquely combines live music performances with interactive, educational experiences led by Broadway performers and professional songwriters. With a fan base of more than 1.1 million, including celebrity followers, it's more than a class — it's a cherished space where children and their families connect, create lasting memories, and discover the joy of learning through music.
Marni's inspiration for Little Maestros began with her experience as a new mother. “When my daughter was born, I wanted a music class with live, original music, but nothing like that existed,” she recalls. Blending her music industry background from Atlantic Records with her desire to provide quality early-childhood experiences, Marni saw a unique opportunity: “I became obsessed with creating the best music class ever." Her dedication brought to life a program that is fun, engaging, and educational.
Since its inception, Little Maestros has thrived through collaboration. Marni assembled a team of experts — song composers, puppet builders, book illustrators, speech pathologists, music therapists, and educators — to help develop the curriculum. “Together, we propelled the company to premiere status,” she humbly shares. The blend of expert insight and Broadway-level talent created a thriving program, quickly filling up classes across the city through word-of-mouth.
Central to Little Maestros is its emphasis on connection through music. “We're on a mission to empower kids and their grown-ups to share moments, create memories, and learn together,” Marni explains. Little Maestros is not just about teaching music; it's about fostering experiences that bring families closer.
Marni remains actively involved in daily operations. “I joyfully attend every class at our Upper East Side flagship, greeting customers by name.” This connection with the community is what she values most. “I love commuting a few blocks to work, seeing familiar faces, and reconnecting with families,” she adds. The sense of community has been one of the most rewarding aspects of Little Maestros for her.
Each day at Little Maestros is filled with joy. “It's impossible not to have fun here. I see happy grown-ups with happy kids streaming in and out of class, and I pinch myself daily at how lucky I am.” Her husband, Nick, who was the original Little Maestros teacher, still teaches classes today. Together, they've built a familycentered business that continues to grow.
Looking ahead, Marni is excited for what's next for Little Maestros. “Every day, the future of Little Maestros becomes more exciting. We're getting closer to going global, which has always been a dream of mine,” she proudly shares. With a strong foundation in the New York City community, Little Maestros is poised for continued growth and success.
Follow Little Maestros on Instagram @littlemaestrosofficial, or register for a class, book a party, or buy a gift card. As Marni says, and practices, “Fill your life with music!”

Lock It Up WITH LIZ
PASSWORDS
BY TURTLE BAY RESIDENT LIZ POLANIECKI
Hello again, SPS Readers! Let's say I've convinced you to make strong, unique passwords for all of your different online accounts after having read my article in the October issue. Now you're ready to take that next step of putting the concept into practice, and it's likely that a couple of questions will naturally follow. If I create strong and unique passwords for all of my numerous online accounts, how will I remember them? Sure, I can come up with a handful of strong passwords but after the first few, it's going to become a hassle. Isn't there an easier way to generate strong passwords?
The answer is a helpful tool called a Password Manager. A Password Manager, or Vault, is just what it sounds like — an online tool to store all of your passwords. But that’s not all it can do. Password Managers can help generate strong passwords, remove the burden of typing your password, and help you easily and safely share sensitive information with trusted individuals. In order to “lock” your Password Manager, you do need to create a Master Password; however, that is the only one that you will have to remember going forward. A small price to pay for the enhanced convenience and security.
So which Password Manager should I use? You may consider joining the vast majority of Password Manager users that have opted for Google's Password Manager or Apple's Keychain. And these are great choices as they are seamless to use, from trusted brands, and best of all, free! Alas, with a free service there are always shortcomings. In this case, the services work best when you stick to the Chrome or Safari browser, respectively. Premium, paid products are more mature than the free options, tending to have better usability across different platforms and features around security, sharing, and overall management.
Whether you decide to go for a free or paid Password Manager, one thing is for sure: It's so much more secure than reusing weak passwords! Although it requires an initial investment of time to set up, most people are ultimately thrilled with the convenience and security a Password Manager offers.
Now that we have covered Passwords and Password Managers, it would be remiss not to discuss the third part of the trifecta of online
identification and authentication. Multi factor authe offers an additional layer of protection on top of your credentials — even if someone manages to get your password, they will still not be able to log in to your account when you have MFA set up! Looking forward to delving into this topic with you next time.

Nuclear POWER
A GREENER FUTURE
BY LOCAL RESIDENT HELLEN HELLO
I’ve been thinking about the paradox of nuclear energy for over 40 years, and have long been bullish on its overwhelmingly clean energy profile.
Building new nuclear power plants, here in the U.S., has been off the table. Indian Point up the Hudson was closed, not because it was leaking, but because activists were concerned about safety and the environment. The disasters at Three-Mile Island (secondary system failure and human error) in 1979, Chernobyl (faulty design and human error) in 1986, and Fukushima (tsunami-caused) in 2011 scared the pants off the public about nuclear power plants.
We are in a turnabout. It’s all over the news that Big Tech is investing in nuclear energy. They must. I’ve written how block chain (cyber currency) uses enough electricity to power a small city. Now, Google, Amazon, and Microsoft competitors in the AI (Artificial Intelligence) revolution need enormous amounts of energy to power the AI, data centers. They are investing in nuclear power.
Those familiar, huge nuclear powers plants may be a thing of the past. The newest innovation in nuclear power plants is called Small Modular Reactors (SMI). How small, I don’t know, but no doubt they will be developed and powered with AI mitigating human error that caused the disasters at Three-Mile Island and Chernobyl.
According to the experts, energy use was flat until 15 years ago. Technology has caused an enormous leap in use, and usage is climbing steadily. I see a greener energy future. If the tech revolution has made our lives better, well, perhaps tech will help make the environment cleaner. And, here’s a bit of a kicker, France gets about 70% of its electricity from nuclear power. Incroyable!

Jewish Book COUNCIL
BY NAOMI FIRESTONE-TEETER, CEO, JEWISH BOOK COUNCIL
Are you an avid reader? Have you taken part in the Sutton Place Social book club? If so, you may have heard about Jewish Book Council (JBC), a vital hub in the Jewish arts and culture world that helps readers, authors, publishers and organizations to celebrate and advocate for Jewish literature all year long.
JBC offers a wide range of public programs that engage both local and virtual audiences, forging stronger connections among the Jewish, literary, and secular worlds. Every year, the JBC Network authors’ platform provides approximately 300 authors and nearly 150 Jewish institutions the opportunity to connect with one another for literary events.
The annual Jewish Writers Conference brings together authors at all stages of their careers to meet and learn from insiders in the publishing world and fellow authors. Book clubs can find annual discussion guides and other resources online as well. Finally, JBC recognizes authors who have made outstanding contributions to Jewish literature, with awards including the National Jewish Book Awards and Natan Notable Books.
By engaging audiences in so many ways, Jewish Book Council can adapt to the needs of the moment and quickly respond to the needs of the communities it serves. One recent example is JBC’s online Witnessing series, a series with over 70 digital pieces that offers Israeli authors, among others, the opportunity to share their post-October 7 experiences. It is truly a collaborative effort — readers, writers, partners and colleagues all play an essential part in nurturing and expanding the impact of JBC’s work.
From its humble beginnings, nearly a century ago, the organization is now celebrating the ninety-ninth year of Jewish Book Month (this year, November 24 to December 24). As it approaches the 100th anniversary during a period of political and social division, Jewish Book Council’s purpose is as significant as ever — to uplift Jewish-interest books and authors, and enrich and educate readers, promoting understanding in our world and demonstrating the importance of the stories we tell.

Tips for Supporting LOVED ONES with DEMENTIA During the Holidays
BY CLARE P. SHANLEY & LINDSEY HARBISON, THE 80TH STREET RESIDENCE
The holiday season is such a time of joy and celebration, but sadly, for families navigating the challenges of dementia, it may also be quite overwhelming. The hustle and bustle, along with the expectations of festive gatherings, may create stress for both the caregiver and their loved ones. However, please do not give up — there are techniques to use to lessen the stress and create joyful moments for all.
While traditions are a beautiful part of the holiday season, they may sometimes appear to be overwhelming for those with dementia. Perhaps, consider simplifying or modifying your celebrations. If large family gatherings are a regular tradition, think about hosting a smaller get-together this year. Try to choose familiar and simpler activities that your loved one enjoys, such as reading a favorite holiday book or watching a classic holiday movie together. Keeping things simple often helps them feel more comfortable and engaged. Meet them where they are now.
If your loved one can no longer participate in traditions that were part of their past holidays, try to engage them now in different activities that promote connection. Doing so may open new opportunities to strengthen bonds and create unique cherished memories. For example, sharing family stories or looking through old photo albums together. These types of activities often spark joy and recognition. For those who enjoy music, be sure to play their favorite holiday songs as music often evokes memories and feelings in a way that words simply cannot.
Finding ways to effectively communicate with your loved one can also help lessen the stress of the season. Begin by trying to speak slowly and clearly, using simple language that may encourage them to express their own thoughts. Be prepared for repetitive questions or confusion. Try to remember that for some, word recall and expression takes time, so be patient. It is often helpful to use visual cues, like photos or objects to also help them follow along with conversations.
As visual cues and objects can be very helpful, it is also important to consider the environment at large. Creating a familiar and serene space may significantly reduce anxiety for individuals with dementia. When decorating, opt for decorations that evoke pleasant memories without being overly stimulating. If hosting guests, prepare a quiet space where your loved one can retreat to if feeling overwhelmed. This gives them a safe place to recharge and even a bit of control, to return when they are ready. Recharging is not only important for your loved one with dementia, but for you as well. Be sure to practice self-care by scheduling regular breaks for yourself, as such may recharge your own spirit.
The holiday season is all about connection, love, and creating meaningful moments. While it may not look quite the same as it once did, embracing the unique aspects of your new celebration can lead to beautiful memories. By simplifying traditions, fostering comfort and nurturing connections, you can create a holiday experience that honors your loved one’s journey with dementia. Remember, the goal is to enjoy each other’s company; not to create a “perfect holiday scene.” WWW.80THSTREETRESIDENCE.COM
