Oscar Pinkus, is an accomplished and awarded Scientist and Engineer by profession, as well as a published author of technical material and papers and he has several patents in his name. He is an avid art enthusiast of many genres, specifically Art Brut or “outside” art and Mr. Pinkus not only appreciates the art around him, he is also a creator. In order to understand Oscar and to recognize his depth of creative capabilities it is important to appreciate his journey of survival and his path to success. Oscar was born in Poland and survived WW II by hiding and living in a forest for two years. We can only imagine the personal strength and persistence he must have possessed to carry him through this indescribable experience. But it is that same persistence that fueled him to success as a Scientist, an Engineer and even an author. Oscar is a graduate of Iowa State University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and was the Director of SIGMA, a consulting firm in the area of tribology. Prior to that, he was with MTI providing technical expertise in the areas of tribology, thermodynamics and energy conservation. He was an Associate Professor and taught at the Israel Institute of Technology and he was a Visiting Professor at the Technical University of Denmark, at the University of the Negev in Israel and at Texas A&M in College Station. Oscar was very talented professionally in a scientific world, but he was also very talented in the artistic world. His literary accomplishments include two published autobiographies, a history of WW II, three novels and a volume of poetry. A documentary film “The Unsettled Ashes” was based on his memoir and on his testimony at a Nazi trial in Germany. Oscar’s other art creativity is found in his “Doodles.” He is known to “doodle” when his subjects are unaware and he has amassed an enormous collection. Oscar is a true Outsider Artist having no formal training but creating art of his own uniqueness, inventiveness and individuality.
