Autumn is well and truly here now and it’s great to have the Martlets Snailspace giant snails to brighten up our city. Another event this month is the Brighton Early Music Festival, which begins on 26th October. If you’re a classical music fan, it’s a good idea to get hold of a brochure or look online and book your tickets now. We also have details of a couple of Halloween events for all the family.

WEST HOVE

Meet the man who looks after two of our parks...

WEST HOVE PERSON – GERALD FLANAGAN Gerald Flanagan is a Senior Gardener at Wish Park and Davis Park. How long have you been a gardener in the parks? I have worked in the parks for 15 years, 10 of those at Wish Park. I also spent some time helping to improve Stoneham Park which is where I first got involved with Friends groups and the local community! What is the best part of your job? Helping to start a local community group through the park and then watching it grow gives me real satisfaction! The community buzz spreads quite quickly as5I think it has in West Hove and now right down to the Lagoon, as we have seen recently! Also at the end of the week when all the grass is cut and the park is ready for the weekend is a nice feeling especially when you see all the different types of park users getting on with their thing, the café and playground is busy and all the improvements are down to the local community through fundraising events and grants! Davis Park has a recently formed Friends group so watch this space!

PREMIER WINDOWS

Doors and Conservatories

What sort of problems do you face? The main problem is budgetary cuts! This leaves the front-line workers very short staffed and sometimes frustrated at the horticultural standard we can or can’t achieve. I am lucky that I have had the pleasure of a fantastic volunteer called Stephen for quite a few years now and he helps with my sanity! The parks are so important for the health and wellbeing of the community to hopefully keep people out of the doctors’ surgeries and that must save valuable time and money. The parks are one of the only places to visit which are still free to use by all! What sort of jobs are you doing in the autumn?

As the parks become more quiet we start to repair any damage from a long hot summer. We repair the grass, play areas, paths etc. Also we renovate the cricket square and put it to bed for the winter, cut back the wildflowers on the Wish hills and then start cutting back the shrubbery to regenerate it for next year. So basically we are already thinking about the shape of the parks for next spring and how we can improve things! How can people help? We are always looking for volunteers and also new members for the Friends groups! There is a community vegetable garden in Wish Park and anyone is welcome to help out, learn some growing skills and get a share of the spoils. It would be good to have some young families to get a perspective of the park and how we can improve it. So please if you see me in the park come and let me know!

Sad news about a popular figure in the local community...

MICHAEL SHARMAN (1939-2018) We are very sad to report that Mike Sharman, a former GP in Hangleton, the founding chair of the Kingsway and West Hove Residents’ Association (KAWHRA), and a past contributor to the West Hove Directory, died suddenly on 24th August, aged 78. Mike grew up in Luton. He and his cousin Paul spent a lot of time together as children. Paul says in his memoirs: “He was always trying to share his games and teach me little experiments with sand, mud, water - whatever came to hand. He really had an 11 amazing enquiring mind and I was never surprised that he became a doctor. In my view he could have had a successful career as a scientist.” He joined two GP surgeries in Sackville Road and West Way in 1966, retiring in 2006. The two surgeries merged in 1990, becoming Hove Medical Centre in Hangleton. He was by all accounts a very popular and compassionate doctor. Mike kept busy in his retirement and achieved much, despite serious increasing deafness. In 2011 he became the founding chair of KAWHRA after a planning application was made to build the six-storey Portzed development on the south side of Kingsway. He played a major part in getting this planning application, which included huge wind turbines between the six tower blocks, rejected, although a subsequent slightly smaller development without the turbines later received permission. Mike even went to the lengths of visiting the turbine makers in London which enabled him to demonstrate that the proposed turbines were far larger than shown in the developers’ designs. In recent years, Mike had helped to create a community garden on the plot of land behind St Leonard’s Church. Joi Jones, Volunteer Co-ordinator of the Secret Garden Group, said: “I first met Mike at KAWHRA and knew him to be a man of action, a motivator and community minded. He was the one to leap at the idea to create a community garden. Mike became the Vice Chair of our small committee and showed how valuable he was with his brilliant ideas, carpentry skills and enthusiasm, backed by his lovely wife Sheila with her useful gardening tips and ensuring he didn’t overdo things (as he was always apt to). “At Secret Garden events Mike created brilliant games for the children and adults alike to enjoy and always dressed up for the role. His witty sense of humour kept

us amused during the long winter months and throughout the year. He became our funding officer and along with myself attended award ceremonies and gave talks at various venues in order to promote the Secret Garden. He has been a great friend and all at the Secret Garden will miss him enormously.” As well as gardening, Mike enjoyed watching rugby and attending science lectures at the Royal Institution in London, took part in many sponsored walking and cycling events for the Martlets hospice, and he and his wife rode a tandem. Local councillor Garry Peltzer Dunn said: “Mike was a true gentleman who contributed so much to us all. His leadership in forming the Kingsway and West Hove Residents’ Association led to our area having a powerful residents’ voice which has contributed so much to the public debate on many issues including planning and parking. He was the first Chairman of KAWHRA and chaired the public meetings in an open and unbiased manner. A difficult thing to do when sometimes nearly 200 residents attended, many with differing views. Residents left feeling they had been fairly treated. A fitting tribute to Mike will be our continuation of the work he started.” Mike leaves behind his wife, Sheila, two children from his first marriage, Nicholas and Samantha, and three grandchildren, Ben, Max and Jasmine. His funeral was held at St Leonard’s Church.

Local news...

NEW LITTER RECYCLING BINS AT HOVE LAGOON Brighton & Hove City Council have installed three new bins at Hove Lagoon which make it easier to dispose of rubbish environmentally. The dual litter/recycling bins arrived just in time for LagoonFest. Many people are confused by what can and can’t be recycled, so this is how the bins should be used: REFUSE SIDE

RECYCLING SIDE

• Plastic cups • Coffee cups • Plastic food trays & disposable cutlery • Drink pouches • Plastic bags • General refuse • Polystyrene foam and food packaging • Crisp + chocolate packets • Drink cartons (Tetrapak) • Food waste • Nappies • Foil • Paper food plates • Tissue Brighton HALF LOOK UP OL HR.pdf 1 • Glass

• Plastic drink bottles • Plastic milk bottles • Cards and paper carton boxes • Cardboard (small pieces) 13 • Newspapers • Magazines • Paper • Cans • Tins • Aerosols

04/05/2018

12:20

Putting items which can’t be recycled, such as coffee cups, in the recycling side, will contaminate the whole load, so the message is: “If in doubt, bin it.” This is a three-month trial scheme which could, if there isn’t too much contamination of the recycling, be rolled out to other areas in the future. The refuse section of the bins will be emptied by the council, while the recycling will be checked and emptied regularly by the Big Beach Café and the Friends of Hove Lagoon. A Trash Converter at LagoonFest was a resounding success, with children earning free sweets for picking up litter. The stall was provided by the council and run by Dean Jackson Waste Management, who also provided extra bins on the day and cleared up afterwards with the help of Friends of Hove Lagoon volunteers.

World class music on your doorstep...

BRIGHTON EARLY MUSIC FESTIVAL 2018 26th OCTOBER TO 11th NOVEMBER Brighton Early Music Festival (BREMF) is exploring the topical theme of Europe this autumn, with 24 concerts featuring 700 years of music from 17 European countries taking place across the city. There’s opera with street dance at The Old Market

19

Highlights include a double bill of early Italian and English opera. Monteverdi’s Ballodelle ingrate and Blow’s Venus and Adonis are directed by Thomas Guthrie, with an exciting young cast and street dance choreographed by J P Omari of Brighton-based Streetfunk (The Old Market, 6-8 November). The festival culminates in a concert of choral and orchestral music for peace to celebrate Armistice Day (St Martin’s Church, 11 November). The festival features several lunchtime and afternoon concerts and all events can be reached on at least one of Brighton bus services 1, 5, 7 and 25. Tickets start at £5 and can be booked online at the festival website at bremf.org.uk or via Brighton Dome Ticket Office on 01273 709709. You can also request a festival brochure via the festival website or by phoning 01273 833746.

AN EXTRA CROSSING IN PORTLAND ROAD? We have been asked by a number of residents for a full crossing on Portland Road near to Rutland Gardens so that there is easier access across Portland Road to Sainsbury’s and for parents crossing the road to reach West Hove School. There is an existing pedestrian refuge island here that allows residents to safely cross Portland Road in two halves. Improvements are being designed to make the distance even shorter and we suggest that the existing crossing, as well as any improvements, should appropriately serve the number of pedestrians wishing to cross at this point. The council has a programme of installing pedestrian crossings of various types, ranging from simple dropped kerbs, pedestrian islands, zebra controlled and sign controlled crossings. This programme is prioritised using agreed criteria. Please let us know what you think ivan.lyons1@virginmedia.com - and we will present to council. Ivan Lyons, Westbourne Conservative Team

This article is by Wish ward councillor Robert Nemeth...

LAGOONFEST...FEEDBACK REQUIRED Now that the dust has settled after the first ever Lagoonfest, my fellow Friends of Hove Lagoon and I are keen to know what everyone living in the area thought about the action-packed day. For those who don’t know, Lagoonfest was held on Saturday 8th September. The free community event included all manner of activities. There were stalls, bands, games, food, drink, a paddle-board race, a dog show and much more. It was opened by our great supporter Norman Cook, AKA Fatboy Slim, who played an impromptu set towards the end of the day; much to the delight of many attending.

21

In organising the event, we tried to plan for every eventuality. A lot of time and energy was put by volunteers into making it both fun and safe. Months were spent Left to right: Liz Ward, Norman Cook, Robert Nemeth and Sue Johnson preparing risk assessments, traffic plans and steward briefings. Getting the right insurance in place was a military operation in itself (and thanks must go to committee member Peter Reeves for his perseverance W A Team of local Artisans specialising in here). handcrafted fitted furniture

A N E Y

It all paid off as the event ultimately went without a hitch. Numbers were certainly up on predictions. Perhaps 6,000 attended which is phenomenal as it really puts what Cllr Garry Peltzer Dunn and I like to call “Hove’s premier seafront attraction” back into the spotlight. Not only were serious funds raised for the improvement of the Lagoon, but the powers-that-be are left in no doubt that it must be kept in tip-top condition.

On that point, we were incredibly proud that the Lagoon was left tidier than it started. We also recycled a huge amount of what was deposited by attendees. This success can be attributed to Dean Jackson Waste Disposal who looked after us on the day for no charge. It’s hard to know who to thank as so many helped out; not least Martin Webb who oversaw the stage and bands. Special recognition must go to Liz Ward and Sue Johnson though who did more than anybody. Their respective contributions were invaluable. We are now in the process of deciding what to do next year and it’s on this point that we would like to hear from the community. Any ideas, suggestions, criticisms or complaints would be hugely appreciated. Cllr Robert Nemeth is Chairman of the Friends of Hove Lagoon. robert.nemeth@brighton-hove.gov.uk

KNIGHT SUPPORT A year ago, after drinking many bottles of wine and taking an overdose, Lynne Knight proceeded to jump off the end of Brighton Palace Pier, having a complete mental breakdown from being evicted from her home and facing being sent to a bedsit in Eastbourne with her four daughters, two of them in their GCSE years. Even with loving parents’ financial support she was unable to privately rent. After being sectioned in hospital and too ill to look after her girls, she had to live apart from them for almost six months which was the hardest six months of her life. Now, a year later, they are back together and have a roof over their heads and, from all their heartache, Knight Support has been born and Lynne has managed to use their problems to help others. One year later, she is here to see her beautiful girls grow and, no matter what, she will never be without them ever again.

Lynne Knight and her daughters

We have started the process to set up Knight Support as a registered charity using our heartache to bring kindness, laughter, hope and warmth to others in need. The community project has run on community spirit with no funding or money donations! If anyone out there is suffering, please seek the help you need or message Lynne@knightsupport.co.uk. Lynne is always happy to chat to anyone in need; she would also like to hear from anyone who wishes to volunteer for the project!

• Wills, Probate, Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA), Deputyships • Family Law (Divorce, Dissolution, Pre-Nups, Financial disputes, Children matters) • Residential Conveyancing and Commercial Conveyancing, shop & lease sales • Personal injury - all forms of accident claims • Defending DWP Benefit Fraud investigations, Interviews under caution & Prosecutions • Criminal and Road Traffic Defence advice • Civil litigation / Debt recovery

The Stoneham pub have been amazing, offering their help acting as a centre for clothes and other essential items to be donated between 3pm-5pm daily. With the winter months looming, we really need help with donations of warm clothes, shoes, sleeping bags, coats and waterproof clothes. Knight Support work in collaboration with other services in Brighton & Hove and supply donations to Antifreeze (Off the Fence) and First Base. Knight Support also run an outreach evening at two soup kitchens in Brighton on a Wednesday, giving out donations, hugs, kindness and love to lovely people just going through a difficult period in their lives. Please view www.offthefence.org.uk and feel free to view their Amazon wish list for their urgent needs! Knight Support would like to thank everyone for their truly amazing community spirit and ongoing support. Together we are stronger and we can’t explain what a difference everyone has made to other people’s lives. Nathalie’s monthly health tip...

ALL CALORIES ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL News of government plans to force restaurants to add calorie listings on their menus is causing a lot of controversy from a business point of view (costs to small businesses, in particular) but may also lead to deeply damaging consequences. Calorie-counting, along with low-fat products and dieting, is now commonly accepted as not only ineffective in reducing weight but potentially harming to your health. But how ‘wrong’ is it to be counting calories? Low calorie foods are not always healthy. Often filled with artificial – harmful – sweeteners, gut-destroying fillers, devoid of nutrients, they will compromise your health, immunity, digestion, moods, hormonal balance etc. Low calorie foods will not make you thinner. In29 fact, most low calorie, low fat foods have been found to contribute to weight gain! How? Because… Low calorie foods will not keep you full and content. The protein and good fats in one tablespoon of nut butter for instance will go a far longer way to keep you satisfied, fuller and less likely to crave sugar, than having a low-calorie granola bar. Low calorie food = exhaustion. Just like a car needs ‘proper’ petrol to burn fuel, so does your body. Your furnace (metabolism) will slow down and (almost) stop burning calories/fat if not fed the right fuel.

These are only a few reasons not to be counting calories – let’s move to the 21st century and focus on adopting healthy, nurturing habits, rather than boost the profits of ‘low-calorie diet’ companies. Fancy a game of bridge?

PLAY YOUR HEARTS OUT IN HOVE So, where’s the most popular bridge in Hove? The railway bridge by the bus garage… probably not. Of course, we’re talking about the game. Duplicate Bridge is a competitive and captivating pastime enjoyed by players of all ages. Whether you want to learn or have played for years, The Avenue Bridge Club is the place to come. The club runs in-house lessons for beginners and more advanced courses for those seeking to improve their overall play. We are open most afternoons for Rubber Bridge and every weekday evening and Wednesday afternoons for Duplicate Bridge. If you’re new to the game or fancy moving from ‘kitchen 33 and bridge’ to club bridge, why not give our friendly cards cake session, Duplicake from 1.30pm on Wednesdays, a try? Our Tuesday nights are also good for beginners, as you can ask for help in the bidding. Thursday, it’s Simple Systems night for more experienced players and Monday is our strong night for the top pairs. You don’t need a partner for any of these, as we have amiable hosts ready, willing and able to play with anyone who comes by themselves. Wednesday and Friday evenings we play club competitions for pairs and teams of four. But even when there isn’t a competition on, we still get together for

A BRIDGE NOT TOO FAR.

Whether you’re an old hand at bidding the hands or want to learn this fascinating card game, pop along to your local Bridge club at 15 Third Avenue, Hove. From 7.30 pm every weekday and 1.30 pm Wednesday afternoon. Partners available.

friendly pairs games. In fact, although we take our bridge seriously you’ll find we have a definite fun side, with lively conversation in our licensed bar before and after the games. So if you fancy an engaging game of bridge and a thoroughly entertaining time, pop along to The Avenue on Third Avenue. We’d love to see you. Regular article about local exercise opportunity by West Hove resident Isobel Muir...

LOCAL EXERCISE...WALKING For those who don’t currently do any exercise, walking is a great way to start. Walking is our natural way of getting around but due to cars, buses, trains etc people seem to have forgotten this. Our bodies want to walk. Sitting down all day at home or at a desk means our hip flexors become tight and our glutes become weak and lazy, and all these and everything else that comes with it means getting out and walking is very important before we all become the people in WALL-E.

35

Although I do a lot of exercise I never really walk anywhere as I tend to run or cycle. So I have now added walking to my routine. Instead of doing a recovery run or doing nothing on my rest days I download a podcast and set out on a walk. In my case the walk is supposed to help me recover so I make sure it is gentle and wholly untaxing (however my natural, easy walking speed is classed as “brisk” at 3.5mph). Over the past week I’ve done three walks of

Want a part-time job making a difference? Are you compassionate, friendly and do
you want to do something meaningful with
your spare time? We are looking for CareGivers to help older people enjoy their life at home and remain independent – perhaps providing companionship, helping with light housework, making a meal or supporting the start of their day, with visits
of at least one hour in length. No previous experience is necessary – just the desire to help other people. Please call to Þnd out more about what

between 40 minutes and 1.5 hours. I have chosen to listen to podcasts whilst walking but of course you can listen/not listen to whatever you like, go with a friend or a child on a bike or whatever you like. If you want to meet new people or desire a structured walk, Brighton Healthwalks is a great place to start. You may have seen the Healthwalk distance markers around the city (I’ve seen a few on the seafront). Organised by the council, they have dedicated volunteer walk leaders and support seasoned walkers or those who are just starting out. All walks are graded on distance and gradient so you can choose the most suitable for your current level of fitness. These walks are free and are a perfect way to meet new people and help you keep to your new regime. Once you’ve met other like-minded folk you can go on your own walks in between the organised ones. Soon you might even feel like taking it up a notch and going longer and/or off-road. The Downs are so close and perfect for a slightly more strenuous walk. Maybe you’d like to progress to Nordic walking where you use poles to get your arms and core more involved. There are Nordic walking groups that meet in various places so don’t feel shy about having a go! For more details about my life in exercise please visit my blog “IMFitHove”.
