WELCOME TO THE WEST HOVE DIRECTORY! We hope you enjoy the articles we have for you this month. No mention of Brexit, we promise! This month we feature the Foghorn, a new micropub in Boundary Road, which seems to be going down very well with local residents. Congratulations to Sylvia Holder, a local resident who we have featured in the past for her charity work and who has now been awarded a BEM in the Queen’s New Year Honours. We have another great local history article from Rachel Bridgeman – this time on Mary Hare, a one-time resident of West Hove you may not have heard of, who ran a school for 3 deaf children and was also a suffragette. Have a great February! The West Hove Directory Team info@westhovedirectory.co.uk www.westhovedirectory.co.uk Cover picture: Jane Galvin

WEST HOVE

A great new addition to Boundary Road...

THE FOGHORN... A new micropub has opened in Boundary Road. The Foghorn is run by Tommy Bowen, Niall Buckler and Tim Harrow. Tommy also plays live keyboards for the band White Lies. He told us more about the new pub... What is a micropub? A micropub is an establishment that eschews electronic entertainment such as TVs, music, gaming machines etc so as to create an environment that encourages conversation. This is complemented by usually a very simple drinks offering of beer, wine and cider from independent producers and a range of cold snacks to complement the beverages. Opening times are traditionally limited during the week, closing around 9-9:30 so as to minimise impact on local residents.

5

How did you come to start it up? It all started after a mid-week visit to The Watchmaker’s Arms in the summer of 2015 to celebrate my friend’s engagement. We were a couple of drinks in and the bell rang for last orders, despite it being daylight and nearly

20 degrees outside. After the initial surprise, I visited again, got to understand the micropub way of things and fell in love with the place. I’ve since become good friends with the owners and they’ve been incredibly helpful in assisting us with setting up over here. What’s your most popular beer? The session pales between 3.5-4% always do well; we sold a cask of Gun Scaramanga in one session. But we always make sure we have a stout and best bitter on, and have had some great customer feedback to these beers we’ve had on from breweries such as Downlands and Holler. What do you sell apart from beer? We sell real cider and seven wines. We also have a range of ethical soft drinks, ones for which the producers of the raw materials are given a fair deal which benefits their communities.

FREEPHONE 0800 0961696

How is it going so far? We’ve been blown away by the response from the locals. Over and again we’ve been told how long people have been waiting for somewhere like ours to open, and it’s been a real treat welcoming people back and getting to know them. We feel like we’ve already got our own Foghorn family despite only being open five weeks.

WEST HOVE

Local history from West Hove resident Rachel Bridgeman...

“WOMEN DON’T COUNT THEREFORE THEY WILL NOT BE COUNTED!” Miss Mary Hare (1860-1945), Hove resident, responded to the rallying cry of the suffragettes on the night of the 1911 census by defiantly spoiling her census form with this slogan. Already a ground-breaking educator of deaf children in London and Brighton, Mary resided at 8 San Remo, Kingsway (West Hove), from 1911 to 1916, where she ran a School for the Deaf.

However, Mary’s enduring legacy was her pioneering work with deaf children, opposing the dominant ethos of “Asylums for the Deaf and Dumb” which provided no more than manual work in a closed workshop. Today, the Mary Hare School is the largest school for the deaf in the UK. Mary has no blue plaque in Brighton or Hove; no bus bears her name.

9

Whilst in Hove she became an active suffragette. By 1910 she was Secretary of the Brighton Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU), boasting that suffragettes ”were going to rouse Brighton”. The WSPU suspended activities for the war in 1914 but Mary’s support of women continued. She infuriated local police chief constables in 1915 by forming the Women Police Volunteers to assist Brighton and Hove’s vulnerable women and children. The Brighton Herald described it as “composed in part, if not entirely, of Suffragettes”. Mary’s reaction to another article is not recorded: “…they look so attractive that you feel you would not at all mind being arrested by them. But if you don’t go quietly look out for yourself; for these athletic ladies have learned the noble art of ju-jitsu.” In addition to self-defence, volunteers were trained in the rules of evidence & procedure and first-aid. An initial duty was debunking the myth that Hove’s women were regularly frequenting public houses and drinking more copiously than the men.

Congratulations to West Hove resident Sylvia Holder...

SYLVIA HOLDER AWARDED BRITISH EMPIRE MEDAL... Sylvia Holder of Westbourne Gardens has been awarded a BEM (British Empire Medal) in the Queen’s New Year Honours for services to education in Kovalam, India. Sylvia founded the Venkatraman Memorial Trust in 2004, to give children from a fishing village in India a better education, following a chance encounter with a 12-year-old boy on an Indian beach 15 years earlier. Sylvia said: “The boy was Venkat; the beach was Kovalam, a poor fishing village near Chennai. I put him through school and university and his career was progressing well when he was killed in

a road accident. He was 27. By this time retired and happily living in my new home in Hove, I returned to Kovalam to see what I could do in Venkat’s memory. It was not a difficult decision: the primary school was in a shocking state. I returned home and set up the Venkatraman Memorial Trust. Retirement over!” The primary school now has new buildings and qualified teachers, a high school for 1,000 pupils has been built, and the village now has a community hall. Some 400 of the most deprived children are sponsored by people in the UK, giving them all an opportunity to realise their potential, previously denied them. 60 of them are now at university and a further 49 have already graduated and have good careers ahead of them, thus breaking the poverty mould which has blighted their families for generations. Sylvia was thrilled to get the totally unexpected news of her award in November which she had to keep to herself until the announcement of the New Year’s Honours list just before the New Year. “I see it as an award for everyone who has contributed to the success of the Venkat Trust. This includes my opposite number in Kovalam, Janakiraman, brother of Venkat, who has so brilliantly looked after the sharp end of the operation, the UK and Kovalam trustees and all our generous supporters, without whom there would have been no achievements! I’m very grateful to them all.” For more information, visit www.venkattrust.org.uk.

There’s a fitness programme for over-50s at CHANGE Gym...

A BIRTHDAY CARD FROM THE KING... How would you like to receive your birthday card from the King? Will you find it in the hallway when you come back from taking the dog for a brisk walk? Or will you shuffle from the sofa to the front door and then struggle to bend your knees when you pick it up? “From the age of fifty, we start losing about one per cent of our muscle mass every year if we don’t keep active,” says Lynzi Mulford, personal trainer and manager of CHANGE Gym’s ForeverFit Over 50s programme. “Few people think that far ahead, but what you do now about your fitness will influence how much you’ll enjoy old age 13 and the years leading up to it.” ForeverFit is different from other fitness programmes for older people. “So many programmes have a patronising attitude, like letting people just sit in a chair and lift a ball up and down,” says Lynzi.

The programme at CHANGE Gym at Portland Road Trading Estate has been so popular that they’ve had to add a new venue on Blatchington Road near George Street in January. “We realised we had to do something when I heard that some ForeverFit members had been up at 3am, sitting ready at their computers to book sessions when they become available,” says Lynzi.

“ForeverFit is about full-on exercise, including activities like walking and indoor cycling. And it’s about more than physical well-being. For many members, their group session with us is the anchor of their day and a chance to socialise.”

If you’d like Lynzi to tell you more and show you around the gym, please phone 01273 944089 to leave a message – someone will call you back to arrange a time. You can also email her at lynzi@ changehove.com or go to changehove.com/ foreverfit and leave your details.

BANKING AND MORTGAGES...

WEST HOVE

Because we all have bank accounts, we see our banks as the go-to places when thinking about money. Banks are often our first port of call whether we want to borrow or save money and, even though this is a totally logical first step to make, it isn’t actually the best idea. Limited Choice The problem with asking your bank for advice on the right mortgage or cash management solution is that their advice is always limited to their products. It’s like going to a car dealership and asking which family saloon car is best for your needs and budget. LOCAL EXERCISE...SCARAVELLI YOGA In autumn last year I was invited by Laura, one of my running group colleagues, to come and try a style of yoga, called Scaravelli, that I haven’t tried before. What happens in a Scaravelli yoga class? Sometimes, not much! The method encourages you to take your time, and the teacher will often give only a handful of poses in the course of the class. That means lots of time to explore and ease into the experience of the asana (posture). It’s a gentle style rather than a sweaty one, using gravity to ease yourself into and out of the postures. The trouble I’ve always had with yoga in the past is that I can’t do even the supposedly simplest of poses due to my massive inflexibility so this version sounded perfect for me. Kizzy (the instructor) began by getting us to lie on a mat and just focus on our breathing (there is underfloor heating too to make this extra comfortable and relaxing). After this we focused on a few postures which we moved The yoga class is just one of the activities offered by Hangleton and Knoll Multi-Cultural Women’s Group. A local update from Wish ward councillor Robert Nemeth...

STANDING UP FOR HOVE SEAFRONT In forming the Friends of Hove Lagoon over two years ago, Cllr Garry Peltzer Dunn and I had no idea that so many local residents would get involved in what we first intended as a much smaller venture. It has been incredible. We now have high hopes for a new organisation that we have set up – Hove Beach Hut Association. It is intended as another group to defend Hove seafront by standing up for the rights of its users and promoting new and exciting schemes for our part of town. The idea arose when the Administration tried to introduce an extortionate beach hut sales tax. It was to be increased from £82 up to around £2,500 – an increase of some 3,000%. Residents and beach hut 25 owners alike weren’t impressed. Over 100 beach hut owners turned up for a meeting at the Gather Inn and unanimous support was given for fighting the tax rise. It also saw hut owners giving their blessing to the formation of Hove Beach Hut Association. As a group, we have mounted the strongest possible defence of Hove’s most iconic feature – the huts. The first battle was over whether or not a 3,000% tax rise was even legal under the existing contract. It certainly would not have been as the contract only allowed for a basic ‘administration fee’. The Administration persisted though and even threatened to evict hut owners who refused to sign a new contract. This scandal, for obvious reasons, made the national news. The good news is that if all goes to plan, the Administration will have dropped their plans altogether by the time that this goes to print. The Hove Beach Hut Association group on Facebook is open to everyone and there is now an e-mail list for hut owners (contact me to sign up). As far as the Lagoon goes, the long-awaited refill is now underway following months of the seawater pump being out of action (and approximately £50,000 of taxpayers’ money being wasted). Also, Saturday 7th September is the provisional date for Lagoonfest 2019. If you would like to volunteer to help, please let me know. Finally, we have been in discussion with local skateboarding groups to assist in consulting residents and users of the skatepark. The results are so far showing an overwhelming desire to update the equipment therein. It is envisaged that Section 106 (tax on property developments) is used to fund improvements. Nathalie’s monthly health tip…

DETOXING RIGHT... Trying to stretch your New Year’s ‘healthy resolutions’ in a bid to extend the new-found glow and vitality to the rest of the year? It may have crossed your mind that this might be a good time to embark on a detox. But before you rush and buy the (expensive and potentially dangerous) detox products and formulas on offer, be aware that your liver and kidneys are already doing a great job at detoxifying daily. Having said that, you might be a good candidate for a gentle cleanse if you regularly indulge in alcohol, smoking, non-organic and ‘junk’ foods, or lead a toxic, stressful lifestyle. So here are some gentle (and cheaper) ways to help support your body and hold on to your ‘new’ vitality: • Hydration! No amount of green juice will do a29 better job than having 2-3L of water a day, sipped slowly, every day. • Increase organic food: especially dairy, meat and fruit/ vegetables you eat raw, unpeeled or roots. • Reduce sugar: Overeating sugar increases the sluggishness associated with a congested liver. So reducing or cutting it out – gradually – will work wonders for your liver and energy. • Sweat! Eliminate more toxins through your pores by moving more.

PROTECTING YOUR YOUR ROOF

G&S PROTECTING Roofing Ltd Ltd YOUR ROOF

• Breathe deeply: For a deeper and more ‘holistic’ cleanse, practise deep breathing and/ or meditation to rid yourself of negative energy and thoughts. This will relax your gut further, allowing the ‘flushed’ toxins to be eliminated thoroughly rather than blocking your system. And who said moderation had to be boring? ‘Boring’ could literally be a lifesaver. Nathalie x Nathalie Sansonetti. Nutrition & Health Coach and Speaker. “Helping people stressed about chronic health issues regain their energy & vitality so they can live their ultimate life, not some day, now.” — newleafnutrition.co.uk

WEST HOVE

A concert at Bishop Hannington Church...

BUTTERFLY CONCERT... Bishop Hannington Church, Holmes Avenue, Friday 15th March at 7.30pm This year sees the return of Jill Kemp (recorders) and the Bernardi Music Group, led by Andrew Bernardi on a wonderfully sweet toned 1696 Stradivarius violin. The programme will consist of two Vivaldi recorder concertos, the sparkling, lively ‘Goldfinch’ played on the tiny sopranino recorder and the more reflective ‘Les Ambassadeurs’ on the treble recorder. These will be followed by a novel arrangement for string trio of part of Bach’s Goldberg Variations and, after interval refreshments, the 33 magnificent Schubert String Quintet in C major. The concert will open with…but I will miss the seagulls… a short solo for descant recorder (and voice!) composed by the concert’s organiser Stephanie Cant, who lives in West Hove. The music quotes from a composition by Stephanie’s daughter Kate Cooper (1981-1991), who also designed the Butterfly emblem. Kate’s love of music, and her wish to share that love with others, is the inspiration for the Butterfly Concerts.

FRIENDS OF STONEHAM PARK With February upon us, now is the time to keep an eye out for new additions to Stoneham Park. A new elm and Hungarian oak will be arriving shortly. The native Narcissus lobularis daffodils and crocuses planted last year should begin to appear. Please can we ask that extra care is taken to avoid damage to the new trees and emerging bulbs with no climbing or swinging from the young small trees and to avoid the plant beds. Thank you for all your acts of kindness seen in the park with the new bird feeder from secret Santa and litter picking. Wear a hat to raise money for Off The Fence...

WOOLLY HAT DAY 2019... Help the homeless on Friday 15th February by taking part in Woolly Hat Day 2019! The number of people sleeping rough or in precarious living situations around Brighton & Hove is still too high. Twelve men and three women died on the streets of Brighton in 2018. We believe our services are needed more now than ever.

It’s a small thing to do, but if everyone in Brighton and Hove did it, the impact would be huge. Let’s stand together as a city against homelessness. So, wear a hat. Pay £1. And tell your friends!

Our homeless project need your help to support the vital work they do throughout the year: fighting against homelessness and supporting individuals through the process of being housed, overcoming addiction and entering work. 35 All you need to do, on 15th February, is: • Wear a hat • Donate by texting WOOL19 followed by £1 (or more), to 70070. • Tell your friends! This is a fantastic fundraising event to get your work, club or school helping the homeless. Don’t forget to Instagram, Facebook and Tweet your Woolly Hat Day photos using our hashtag#OTFwoollyhatday. A survey on Portland Road by local Conservatives...

PORTLAND ROAD BIG CONSULTATION We were delighted to have received so many responses to our campaign for Hove’s first pavement parking ban outside St Peter’s Church on Portland Road. Now that the Council has taken notice with the parking ban going live and pedestrian safety around community facilities such as the church, school, nursery and park much improved, we are setting our sights on further improvements. Comments on the doorstep about Portland Road have been varied; some residents are concerned about parents parking unlawfully during the school drop-off and collection times, others have concerns around speeding and the general maintenance of cycle facilities. Now is the time to have your say – please complete the survey online at: www.bit.ly/2Vm5lDz Through receiving a good response from residents, we can focus on exactly what changes you are asking for. The survey will also be delivered to residents of Westbourne ward to respond by post. See local reviews of this business at

WEST HOVE

Meet a local resident who’s written a novel...

LOCAL AUTHOR...CATHY ROBINSON Cathy Robinson lives in Grange Road and last year published her first novel, The Boomerang Effect, at the age of 53. How long have you lived in Grange Road? Since 1995. I can’t believe it’s been so long. When I moved here this area was very different. It’s always had a villagey feel, but the local shops were very eclectic back then. I remember when the very first coffee shop opened on Portland Road – I thought it would never take off! The old Bingo Hall was still open on the corner of School Road, and it used to attract a crowd every weekend. What do you like about the area? The community atmosphere – people look out for one another. I love 37whenever possible. the variety of cafés, and shops – I try to shop local I’ve recently become interested in the local live music scene – it’s great there are so many local music venues again. What is your book about? It’s a feel-good read based on the Greek Island of Skiathos. It’s a novel about going back - and new beginnings. The book follows the adventures of Jenny Barker who, at just turned 50, feels washed up, alone and most definitely past it. Things don’t go according to plan when she jets off on a relaxing trip to soak up the sun on the Greek island of Skiathos. It’s part mystery, part romance and part travelogue.

I’ve been really bowled over by the lovely feedback I’ve had on the book. People say it transports them to Greece – so I’d say it’s an ideal holiday read or for snuggling up by the fire, dreaming of summertime. What did you do before becoming a writer? I’ve always written – I have a huge box in the attic crammed full of travel journals – I’ve been writing them since I was six years old. Aged about ten I wrote a book all about wild horses and typed it up on my parents’ old typewriter. But ‘The Boomerang Effect’ kind of evolved and at some point I realised I’d better get it published since it had taken me so long to create! I’ve always had pretty diverse jobs – I’ve been a Marketing Officer for London Zoo, a workplace trainer and a nutritional therapist. I’ve worked from time to time in Down to Earth in Portland Road. I love working there, as I get to meet so many local residents. “The Boomerang Effect” by Cathy Robinson is available from Amazon, Kobo, Smashwords, Draft to Digital and Barnes & Noble.
