Local History - Tickle Belly Alley
We hope you enjoy the articles we have for you this month. Our featured local person is 17-year-old Alfie Jukes, who attended West Hove School and Hove Park School. We spoke to him back in 2014 when he was appearing in “Gypsy” at the Chichester Festival Theatre; he is now in the RSC’s new musical version of David Walliams’ “The Boy in the Dress” in Stratford-upon-Avon. We have another great archive photo from The Keep – this time it’s of the Goldstone Ground during World War Two – and local historian Rachel Bridgeman tells us about Tickle-Belly Alley at Aldrington Halt. We also have some tips from local physiotherapist Bex Morant on keeping your bones strong. 3 Have a great February!

WEST HOVE
Local history from Rachel Bridgeman...
TICKLE-BELLY ALLEY... A recent study by the University of Cambridge revealed that regional dialects are dying out. This was brought home to me recently when faced with a row of blank teenage faces at the mention of a “twitten” - the old Sussex dialect word for a narrow passageway between two walls or hedges. This got me to pondering local nicknames, modern and olden, for places near and dear to us, such as Wish Park, Poets’ Corner and Hove Actually. And a delightful local sobriquet in everyday usage throughout the history of West Hove until as late as the 1950s, and still in use today by the older generation of born and bred residents - Tickle-Belly Alley. 5 That was the pet name bestowed by locals on the cattle creep at Aldrington Halt (the most easterly of West Hove’s two railway stations). Prior to the construction of the West Coast Line in the 1840s, West Hove was still largely an expanse of fields, allotments and brickfields crossed by ancient rights of way winding from the sea up to the Downs. The passage under the tracks (a feature so familiar to many a sleepy West Hove commuter and secondary school child today) was designed to preserve a welltrodden path which had been in use for centuries by local shepherds and farmers.

A hundred years ago, on exiting the cattle creep, allotments greeted you on the right-hand side and the railway line to Devil’s Dyke on the left. In between, Tickle-Belly Alley continued up through the countryside to the Old Shoreham Road (along the route of Amherst Crescent today). As dusk fell, Tickle-Belly Alley was frequented by courting couples - during the Great War, witness to the final amorous farewells of young couples; in later decades, the scene of a “snog and fumble” en route back to Hangleton and Knoll after a flick at the Granada Cinema on Portland Road. A teenager from West Hove who is in an exciting new show by the RSC...
WEST HOVE
LOCAL ACTOR...ALFIE JUKES Alfie Jukes is 17 and left Hove Park School last summer. He is performing until March in a much-anticipated musical production by the Royal Shakespeare Company of David Walliams’ novel The Boy in the Dress, which opened in Stratford-upon-Avon in November. Lisa James, the coolest girl in the school, is sketching in her notebook when he meets her in detention. Dennis is soon convinced to visit Lisa’s house where he tries on one of the dresses that she has designed, and our show follows Dennis’s journey and how the people close to him react as he explores his own personal expression.
Alfie (right) as John, with Toby Mocrei as Dennis and Rufus Hound as Dad; photo by Manuel Harlan 9
And of course it’s a musical, with the music and lyrics by Robbie Williams and Guy Chambers. So it has some amazing songs, and the choreography and sets are just amazing. What part do you play? Tell us more about that character.
Tell us more about the show... This show is all about celebrating diversity. It follows Dennis, a 12-year-old footballer who feels different to the people around him. When his mum leaves home, life is tough and the only reminder Dennis has of her is a photo of her in a beautiful dress, rather like the one that
I play John, Dennis’s older brother, who loves nothing more than to pick on his little sibling and stuff his face with Magnum ice creams! He is the definition of a teenager, and becomes extremely jealous after finding out about Dennis’s new friendship with Lisa James, the girl he claims to be dating, despite the fact he’s never even spoken to her (he’s playing it ‘cool’ apparently). Despite his initial reaction, John comes to terms with his brother’s love for dresses and, just like the football team do when they run onto the pitch in frocks towards the end of the show, he eventually supports Dennis’s openness about being unique. Has it been difficult living away from your family?

Living away from home has been strange, but I’ve been so focused on the show that I haven’t really had time to miss Brighton because I’ve just been having so much fun. I am also living with the best group of people (some of the other young performers) and we all get on so well, so I’m never alone either. It’s been a lot of work, but it’s what I love doing, so it’s worth it. Is there a possibility of the show coming to Sussex or London? The show has been going down a storm here in Stratford. The reviews and the audience reaction have been fantastic, so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens next! What are your plans for the future?
www.thepaintproject.co.uk Tel: 07514 200957
I finish my contract in March and then I’m finished up here in Stratford, so hopefully I’ll be on to something else exciting, but in this industry you never can tell. My dream is obviously to carry on doing theatre for the rest of my life, but whether I train for a few years or go straight into more work, I don’t know! The Boy in the Dress is at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon, until 8 March 2020. Tickets: rsc.org.uk / 01789 331111.

Bloodline wills and care home fees‌ Can you avoid your house being sold to pay for care home fees? The answer is sometimes yes and sometimes no. The best solution for a couple who own their own home is to make sure they have the right sort of wills and own the house in the right way. There are two options: 1. Beneficial joint tenants (owners). 2. Tenants (owners) in common. How can Camrass Wills help? We can advise you what is best for your situation. We can tell you how you own your home – the Land Registry documents do not use either of the phrases, beneficial joint tenants or tenants in common! Lasting powers of attorney. Brighton Dome & Festival want your stories...
MEMORIES NEEDED FOR HERITAGE PROJECT... Were you mesmerised by Pink Floyd’s first performance of Dark Side of the Moon? Did you sneak into David Bowie’s infamous 1973 Ziggy Stardust gig as a teenager? Have you got a special memory of taking part in Brighton Festival children’s parade? Or did you ever perform on the Brighton Dome stage? Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival are asking the public to record their memorable stories as part of a new heritage project, I Was There. The interviews and collection of memorabilia will be archived for future generations, and selected stories will be presented in an online exhi11and bition and feature in a public programme of tours talks at Brighton Dome. Kate Richardson, Participatory Interpretation Manager at Brighton Dome, said: “We’d love to hear people’s unique recollections or from anyone who has a special connection to Brighton Dome and Brighton Festival – whether it was 50 years ago or more recently. We’re keen to speak to audience members recounting how they felt about seeing their favourite artist or witnessing a sporting event; performers and participants who took part in a show, as well as former employees who can tell us what it was like working behind the scenes.” Since being converted into a performance venue 150 years ago, Brighton Dome’s three stages have seen a dazzling array of illustrious artists and musical icons such as Patti Smith, Beyoncé, David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix, as well as hosting tea dances, wrestling matches and graduation ceremonies. And since 1967, Brighton Festival has brought thousands of international artists to the city. The National Lottery Heritage Fund is supporting the oral history project as part of their contribution towards the refurbishment of Brighton Dome’s Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre. heritage organisation, Strike a Light – Arts & Heritage, are delivering the project with the help of a team of volunteers who will be trained to collate audio interviews from participants. Nicola Benge, Project Manager at Strike a Light, added: “Capturing individual experiences provides a valuable insight into the social history of the arts in Brighton & Hove. We’d like to record memories from a broad crosssection of communities and age groups to reflect how the arts and these historically important venues have had an impact on people’s lives.” Interested participants should email: strikealight@ rocketmail.com or visit Brighton Dome’s website for further information: https://brightondome.org/about/ history_heritage/

Lindsey Tydeman from The Keep archive centre with a photo taken during World War Two…
WEST HOVE
FROM THE KEEP… THE GOLDSTONE GROUND It’s not all about the glorious game here! The photographer has focused on what was a new aspect to football matches during the Second World War; the presence of Air Raid Precaution volunteers. Like football stewards today who must face the crowd, their job was keep their eyes up, studying the sky for signs of approaching German aircraft.
13
This man, who is wearing his military issue steel helmet, would have used a wooden rattle (probably in his bag) to warn supporters to take cover – it made a loud clicking noise. We think this photograph was taken on 15 February 1941 at the Brighton and Hove Albion v Arsenal match, when a crowd of around 12,000 watched Third Division Albion lose 4-1. At this stage of the war Hove residents had had experience of bombing raids – there had been a serious attack on Kemp Town the previous September – but gas attacks were still considered the main danger. If you look closely at the crowd you’ll see that several individuals are carrying their own gas masks slung across them in a satchel-type bag. There are no team colours, but the supporters (and we can only see men in this picture) are smartly and warmly dressed in good quality overcoats and leather shoes and boots. Everyone is wearing some form of hat, either a cap, a trilby, or, in the case of the boys, a school cap. You can spot one or two military personnel in the crowd, a Royal Navy recruit on the left and a soldier on the right. This is an excellent picture of the Goldstone Ground. It shows how the pitch was oriented, with the famous North Stand, built in 1930, at the top of the photograph. The stand was positioned parallel to the Old Shoreham
Road; behind it are the trees of Hove Park and to the left are the relatively-new houses of Park View Road, which runs along the west side of Hove Park. According to the official Brighton and Hove Albion website, www.brightonandhovealbion.com, a total of three football games had to be abandoned due to air raid warnings during World War Two, and a bomb hit the North Stand in 1942, although no one was hurt. Organising a football game during a war was no easy task. The website states that, ‘under the wartime regulations, Charlie Webb, who was manager from 1919-1947, called upon players of other clubs serving with the Army in the area, and even had to draft soldiers from the crowd on occasion to complete an eleven.’ The last game at the Goldstone Ground was played in April 1997, and supporters left the ground carrying away handfuls of the much-loved turf. Its subsequent evolution from football pitch to retail park is still a bitter issue for many fans. This image (ARG/3/2490/2) is taken from the Argus collection (ARG/3) of glass plate negatives which is housed at The Keep. The images have been digitised and can be viewed in The Keep’s Reference Room. Search the website catalogue for a full list and details of opening times.

News from Wish ward councillor Robert Nemeth...
COUNCILLOR NEWS... I read last year that we need to plant 19 billion trees internationally – every year – to offset both current and future carbon emissions. So what are we doing locally? Brighton & Hove City Council no doubt has its own proposals but, here in Wish Ward specifically, Cllr Garry Peltzer Dunn and I have been working with residents (in particular, the Friends of Stoneham Park and Hove Civic Society), two schools and several businesses to bring forward an assortment of tree-planting and naturerelated schemes on and around Portland Road. I have written about different elements of this in the past and have been a little frustrated by progress in dealing with the City Council. By the time that this is published, we will have attended the Environment, Transport & Sustainability Committee to request that all of our work is grouped as a single project and taken forward as one. If adopted, it will be the city’s most ambitious treeplanting project. Elements include the following: Westerman Complex, School Road We worked with council officers to secure £50,000 for street trees around the new Hyde scheme on School Road (BH2016/02535). Agreement has been reached in principle for these to go on Portland Road in front of the school and on School Road. The same Section 106 Agreement provides £69,000 for Stoneham Park as well. We would like some of this to go towards the Friends of Stoneham Park’s ‘wildlife corridor’ proposal for the south-west corner (along with the two park trees from the Mainstone House application as mentioned below). Wish Park Surgery, Portland Road Agreement has been reached that four missing trees will be replaced outside the Wish Park Surgery building on Portland Road. These were damaged by motorists prior to the successful conclusion of our campaign in this location for Hove’s first pavement parking ban.
Mainstone House, Marmion Road / Mainstone Road The Section 106 Agreement for ‘Mainstone House’ (BH2018/01894) provides for seven trees in the locality following our negotiations with the developer. Our proposal at the time was that five go on Mainstone Road and two go in nearby Stoneham Park. Locations in principle have been suggested subject to an inspection of Mainstone Road and consultation with residents. Stoneham Park Two of three recently-planted trees that were paid for by the Friends of Stoneham Park have sadly died. Agreement has been reached for these to be replaced. As always, we welcome support, criticism, comments and questions. Cllr Robert Nemeth Wish Ward

Lee Smikle tells us about his new dance space in Hove...
NEW DANCE STUDIO...SMIKLE SPACE Professional dancer Lee Smikle has recently opened Smikle Space on Third Avenue, Hove – a new dance studio with classes for children, young people and adults. What is your background? Originally from Yorkshire, I started dancing at the late age of 19. I didn't even know that dance could be a potential career choice. A chance visit to my local theatre led me to get a part-time job there where I got to see live theatre, musicals and dance regularly. I saw acclaimed companies like Northern Ballet and Alvin Ailey. I signed up for ballet classes, and the rest is history. I trained at the Rambert School of Ballet & Contemporary Dance and have performed in operas (Glyndebourne), pop videos (Kylie Minogue) and movies (Billy Elliot). My main performance work, however, was with Matthew Bourne's New Adventures, touring internationally in shows like Swan Lake, The Car Man and Nutcracker. I later became a resident artist and producer of the New Adventures Choreographer Award (NACA). Teaching soon became my main passion, and I retired from performing in 2007. I was the lead dance teacher at the Laban Centre For Advanced Training (CAT) 2007-

14. In January 2010, I founded Shoreditch Youth Dance Company (SYD) and later Smikle Project (2011). Why did you decide to set up a dance studio? It's been a long-time ambition of mine to have my own studio space. I love teaching, so creating a home for the work I do with young dancers was the dream. I moved to Brighton & Hove in 2017 and launched SYD:B Creative Dance Academy in September 2018. SYD:B has established itself as the go-to creative hub for many local young dancers, ready to take their dance training to the next level. With SYD celebrating their tenth anniversary this year, it seemed like the perfect time to open Smikle Space. Tell us about the studio and what sort of classes are available? There is a fully sprung dance floor with dance vinyl flooring, a kitchen, lounge area and a stunning photography infinity wall. We do classes and courses for children, young people and adults in: Creative Dance, Contemporary Dance, Ballet, Flow Fit, Boys Only, Intensives, workshops and private lessons. You can also hire out the space for rehearsals and events. Thank you! Current offers: 'First Class Free' and '25% off all courses'. Smikle Space is at 5 King's Mews, Third Avenue, Hove BN3 2PA. For more information, visit www.smiklespace.com or email info@smiklespace.com.

Health advice from Nathalie…
WHAT AM I DOING WRONG?! You’ve done it all: hit the gym at ungodly hours when your body was SCREAMING for more sleep, you’ve cut out entire food groups and tried fasting (starving), and yet, you just can’t get rid of the extra pounds or get the energy you should – surely – be getting from such a ‘healthy’ lifestyle. Trouble is – you’ve also boosted your stress and fat ‘storing’ hormones – cortisol and insulin. When in balance, your body utilises the nutrients you feed it, to sustain effort and wellbeing. When not in balance – ie, when you’re pushing too hard – your body will go into fight or flight mode, as the intake of nutrients and recuperation are insufficient to sustain wellbeing. And although some (most) think that’s a good thing – ie: no pain, no gain – you’re only putting your body into ‘deficient mode’ and creating depletion and disease. What’s the solution?
• Listen to your body. Endurance or intense sports are not beneficial for all ages and bodies. • Relax and move more. Breathe deeply, take breaks, include more movement into your day-to-day. Always do what feels right for you Nathalie Sansonetti, Health & Nutrition Coach
• Diet is vital to reduce insulin/cortisol, so cutting out inflammatory refined sugars is a good start, but more importantly, ADD more good fats, protein and variety from ALL food groups. • Never exercise on an ‘empty tank’- your metabolism cannot burn calories if it’s not stoked up with fuel. The only reserves it will use up are essential nutrients.

How to get stronger, fitter bones...
OSTEOPOROSIS... WHY YOU SHOULD CARE & TOP TIPS Osteoporosis is a ‘silent’ disease. It’s not painful and the majority of people don’t know they have it unless they break a bone. Our bones are surprisingly dynamic, they are constantly renewing. New bone gets laid down and old bone gets reabsorbed - it’s called bone turnover. Various things affect the rate of ‘turnover’ such as: being over 50, family history, being post-menopausal, lack of exercise, low body weight, being calcium or vitamin D deficient, excessive drinking, smoking and other medical conditions. These factors can cause our bone turnover to become mismatched, producing less new bone than 33 is being reabsorbed. Remember, this process is pain free, but over time bones become less dense and more susceptible to breaks. IT’S NOT JUST THE OLD! There is a high chance that you, or someone close to you, will get osteoporosis. There is a staggering 1 in 2 chance that a woman will have an osteoporotic fracture (break) in her lifetime, and for men a 1 in 4 chance. Key areas affected are: spine, hips and wrists. The most common breaks are in the spine; these tend to be from age 55 to 74. They are not nice and can be life limiting and lead to problems with long-term pain and mobility. TOP TIPS 1/ During adolescence we have accelerated bone growth, peaking in our late 20s. Build a good foundation early with lots of exercise and good diet, including foods high in calcium and vitamin D. It is recommended to take a 10ug supplement of vitamin D during winter months. 2/ Impact exercises activate our bone-building cells. GET MOVING 3-4 times a week, eg walking, stair climbing, running, star jumps, tennis. 3/ Strengthening exercises cause strong muscles to pull on bones, activating the building cells. WORK HARD, PROGRESS SAFELY 2-3 times a week, eg sit to stand, wall
sits, bridges, squats, lunges, gym work. 4/ Work on your balance by sitting less, standing on one leg, Otago balance exercises, tai chi. 5/ Don’t feel overwhelmed, start small, find a group/ buddy. If unsure get HELP & ADVICE from a GP, physio, or fitness professional. IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO START. If you have any questions or concerns please do get in touch.
