A last chance to visit this lovely event...

FINAL YEAR FOR THE BEYOND BEACH HUT ADVENT CALENDAR... Having run the Beach Hut Advent Calendar since 2008, the small team from BEYOND have decided that 2018 will be their last year running this unique Hove seafront experience. Created to remind people of the Christian roots of the season of Advent, this popular community arts event has attracted hundreds of people to the seafront each night in December for 11 years to see the beach hut art installations created around a Nativity theme. This simple concept involves one hut each night in Advent opening up to showcase an art installation from 5.30pm-6.30pm, just like a giant Advent calendar.5Only one hut is open each night and there are free mince pies and warming drinks on offer. The art is created by individual artists; beach hut owners; community groups; schools and churches; and the last ten years have seen an extraordinary range of different creative approaches. These have included live donkeys, laser shows, ice sculptures, contemporary dance, poetry, Morris dancing, spacemen, crib scenes and lots of angels and stars. The founder of the event and principal organiser since 2008, Revd Martin Poole, commented: “It has been a

wonderful experience creating this event and seeing it develop over the last 11 years. I am grateful for all the people who’ve contributed in all weathers and for the relationships that have formed through doing this. I hope we’ve helped to remind people of the true meaning of Advent and Christmas, and been able to offer a pause for thought away from the busyness and commercialism of the season.” The Beyond team will now focus on developing other creative projects but are open to others taking on the Beach Hut Advent Calendar mantle if they would like the event to continue. A collage of old photos from one of our readers...

SCHERMULY ROCKET MACHINE In the September issue of the West Hove Directory there was a picture from my great-grandfather’s photo album (Harold Octavius Daniel – he was an eighth child!). The pictures were taken on Hove Lagoon at the end of the street I now live in. These pictures were of the Brighton Coastguard, where my great-grandfather was Inspecting Officer, undertaking ‘Life Saving Drills’ on Hove Lagoon in May 1914, three months before the outbreak of WW1.

during the drill, and the bottom left picture is of my great-grandfather demonstrating life-saving skills to the assembled company, and in front of a couple of friends of mygreat-grandmother, apparently!

Amazingly, the whole process is shown, from firing the rocket, rescuing a man on the wire, to demonstrating These pictures from the album show a ‘Rocket Machine’ life-saving by my great-grandfather, all within a stone’s (top two pictures). It is a Schermuly Rocket, invented in throw of where I now live and I had no idea my great1897 for the purpose of firing from a sinking ship to land, grandparents had ever been to Hove! or vice versa, a rope from which sailors could be rescued. 7 The second two pictures are of a sailor being ‘rescued’ Geoff Pike

Wish ward councillor Robert Nemeth updates us on what’s happening at Hove Lagoon...

WEST HOVE

HOVE LAGOON WATER PUMP Cllr Garry Peltzer Dunn and I were flooded with questions about the large pumping units that suddenly appeared on the promenade near Hove Lagoon several months back. It turned out that the sea water pump at the Lagoon had broken and a replacement was on order. Whilst the pumping equipment with associated pipes was unsightly, it was to be in place just temporarily. Garry and I realised that something was wrong when Lagoon Watersports received news from the 13 Council that the temporary pumps were to be switched off before a new pump was in place. Without the daily pumping taking place, the Lagoon would empty and business would be affected. We queried this with the Council and discovered that a pumping contractor, Sykes, was charging £2,000 per week for temporary pumps whilst NOT actually fixing the broken pump – a huge conflict of interest. Something like

Nick Scott from Lagoon Watersports with Councillors Robert Nemeth and Garry Peltzer Dunn

£50,000 was spent whilst awaiting a fairly minor repair. To add insult to injury, Sykes said that several further months would be required to undertake the then-diagnosed problem. Garry and I ensured that Sykes were let go and introduced a new firm, Maydean, following an approach from owner Simon Maynard and a number of unprompted recommendations from local businesses. The Henfieldbased engineering firm diagnosed the problem in minutes rather than the months that Sykes took. As I write, the smaller of the two pools is completely empty and the larger is getting close. Each is starting to smell. There is an opportunity to do some cleaning which is a helpful aside but, ultimately, they should be full and in use. Not wishing to get my own hopes up too much, I am confident that the new pump will be up and running by the time that this piece goes to print. This follows an assurance that I have received personally from Simon Maynard. His firm will also recondition the old pump so that a spare is ready should any further problems arise. It is our hope now that the Council pursues Sykes for the return of the cash that was spent on temporary pumps. £50,000 is a huge waste of money that could go on all manner of essential local services. It takes three weeks to refill the Lagoon which gives some idea as to how much work the pumps must do. Cllr Robert Nemeth - Wish Ward Brighton & Hove City Council @robert_nemeth

LOCAL BUSINESS... SUSSEX FUNERALS Sussex Funeral Services in Portland Road are owned and operated by husband and wife team Philip and Sallie Evans. How long has your business been in West Hove? Our office has been on Portland Road since 2011. How did you become funeral directors? Philip began as a funeral director in 2010, after the death of his brother. That was the catalyst and, having spent previous years as a police officer and in other professional roles, he realised that he could use his skills to begin a new vocation. When Sallie joined him, her personality and experiences complemented Philip’s, so much so that we have since married and now operate the business as a successful husband and wife team. What are the benefits of using an independent funeral director? When you use any independent business, you are more likely to receive services that go above and beyond, with professionals who are more likely to go that extra mile,

WEST HOVE to ensure that you receive the very best of services. And that is exactly what you’ll receive from us. That combined with the fact that we are the decision makers and can therefore do almost anything that a client wants, within reason and so long as it’s legal! How do you think funerals have changed over the years? Well firstly, to mention the cost of funerals, there is a lot of bad press recently, scaremongering about how funeral costs have risen dramatically; only yesterday 19 a representative of the council suggested that funeral costs have tripled. That just isn’t true. It’s in their interest to scare the public into buying their funeral plans. Since 2011, our traditional funeral costs have risen by 20%, that’s almost 2% annual increase over the last 10 years, less than annual inflation rises. My strongest advice is to consider getting quotes from at least three funeral directors, which might include a Dignity branch, a Co-op branch and an independent. Secondly, over the last decade people’s attitudes to funerals have changed so much. The word

‘contemporary’ has hit the ground running big time, with more and more clients choosing to go down the road of something less traditional, something less black, so to speak. With an emphasis more on ‘celebrating the life of’, maybe including some colour, maybe taking the service away from the crematorium scene, and maybe even taking a leaf out of David Bowie’s book and not having a funeral service at all – but rather consider the less pricey option of a ‘direct cremation’ followed by a memorial service later on. How about a themed funeral? Here at Sussex Funerals we can advise, suggest and tailor anything to your wishes. How will your family be celebrating Christmas? We’re off to Scotland, hoping to catch some snow up in the Highlands, to recharge our batteries and come back for the New Year refreshed and ready to be there for those who’ll be needing our support. WEST HOVE

A local history article by West Hove resident Rachel Bridgeman...

THE SHACKLES OF ALDRINGTON The feast day of St Leonard was celebrated last month on the 6th November. Not only is the original parish church of Aldrington dedicated to this 5th century French saint, but his name is remembered throughout Sussex in the names of churches, streets, towns and a forest. So, who was he and what miracles did he perform to merit these accolades? After the local ruling French noble, Clovis I, granted him the right to liberate any prisoner whom he found worthy, he was hailed as the patron saint of prisoners. Later, whilst living as a hermit, he was joined by a number of followers; prisoners who on invoking him in their prison cells had seen their chains break before their very eyes. They came to him in homage dragging their heavy chains 21 and irons behind them as an offering. Over the years and centuries, his fame spread; Richard The Lionheart made a pilgrimage to his shrine at Noblac, and crusaders who fought in the Holy Land believed he protected them from captivity. It may be from returning crusaders that his story arrived in the south of England, where over 100 churches are named after him. According to local Sussex legend, St Leonard spent some time in St Leonard’s Forest, near Horsham, where he slayed the last dragon of England. Injured in the battle, lilies of the valley grew where his blood fell – today an area of the forest is still called The Lily Beds. In 1893 when Aldrington amalgamated with Hove, the new coat of arms celebrated the union by including the cross of St Andrew to represent the parish of Hove and the shackles of St Leonard to represent the parish of Aldrington. It was not until 1997, when Hove and Brighton formed a unitary authority, that the updated design for the coat of arms lost the reference to Aldrington and St Leonard. To learn more about the history of West Hove, come on an historical guided walking tour led by a local historian and tour guide. Hove Actually Walking Tours are fun, informative, informal and best suited to the incurably curious. Whether it’s your first visit or you have lived here your whole life, the tours are a great way to discover, uncover and experience the area.

Nathalie’s monthly health tip...

MORE PRESENTS OR MORE PRESENCE? As the end of the year approaches and all the festivities preceding it – I thought I’d help you end the year gently lifted and feeling more peaceful in yourself. I’m often asked: “What’s the most common thing you say to your clients?” Surprisingly, it’s NOT about what to eat or eliminate because of intolerances. It’s NOT about supplements or exercise to get rid of bloat and lose some weight. It’s ALL about how you are when you eat. So here are some tips to help ease you into the festive meals, celebrations and potential overindulgences: Take stock. Use this time to stop and take a look at your year. What’s worked - what hasn’t – health-wise and in any area that affects your joy of life. Write it all down. 29 Slow down. Everything: your breathing, eating, chewing, even thinking. Just BE in the present, in your body, the room you are in. Slow time down. Assess every action with the question: “Do I really have to…”..go to the supermarket for that extra bag of sprouts? Will anyone notice or care? Breathe deeply. There’s no better way to bring your spinning head back into your body, your environment and the present moment. Appreciate – what you have – write three gratitudes a day.

See? Nothing about calories, fats or carbs! Just en-joy! Nathalie X Nathalie Sansonetti. Nutrition & Health Coach and Speaker. “Helping people stressed about chronic health issues regain their energy & vitality so they can live their ultimate life, not some day, now.” newleafnutrition.co.uk

Update from the Friends of Davis Park...

DAVIS PARK – A HIDDEN GEM The Friends of Davis Park have had a fantastic 2018. Since our inaugural meeting in March our committee and members have been hard at work.

33

Tucked away just off St Heliers Avenue, Davis Park is a hidden gem. The wide range of trees, shrubs and flowers delight our local green-fingered residents, while the secret pathways and newly created wildlife corner are loved by younger visitors. With lawns enjoyed by picnickers and four-legged friends alike, the park truly has something for everyone.

Professional Tree care

Whilst the council does an excellent job maintaining the park on limited funding (special mentions must go to Gerald, Steve and Sally), there is lots more that can be done to improve the park for the benefit of all the community. This year we have had great turn-out of volunteers for our three work days and have cleared weeds, cut back shrubs and planted some bulbs for spring colour. We’ve also been tackling the perennial park problems of dog mess and anti-social behaviour. We’ve even had a go at running an event, with a charming family Shadow Puppet workshop and show held in July. We have been fundraising for the park through cake, plant and book sales. The children have loved setting up street stalls selling their wares to passers-by. Thank you to all members of the local community who have generously supported us this year. We’ve got lots of ideas for 2019 which we discussed with our members in our recent meeting in November. Areas we will be looking at include: - further improvements to the wildlife corner - a stepping stone log trail for children - planting projects and more work days - repainting the park gates If you’d like to get involved with our group we’d love to hear from you. Please email us on Friendsofdavispk@ gmail.com or search for our Friends of Davis Park page on Facebook. Erika, Olivia and the Friends of Davis Park Committee

NEW CAFÉ IN HOVE LIBRARY Café Domenica, a café run by local charity Team Domenica, has opened on the ground floor of Hove Library. Rosa Monckton, whose younger daughter, Domenica, has Down’s syndrome, set up Team Domenica to help young adults with learning disabilities find and retain meaningful employment. The charity’s cafés not only help young adults develop skills and build confidence, but also bring people in the community together. The café at Hove Library is the second Café Domenica. The other café is in Preston Road. Customers are able to take drinks away to other areas of the library where they may be reading or studying. However, drinks are not permitted in the Wolseley Room on the upper floor due to the sensitive archival materials handled in that room. The café is open from Monday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm.

FRIENDS OF STONEHAM PARK By the time you read this we may already have put on (on 1st December) what we hope will be a successful and fun Christmas Market for the second year running in its new format. We have got some new trees coming and over 600 bulbs were planted this autumn, ready to make the park beautiful in the spring. We are setting up a gardening club, we hope, in the new year, which is an exciting development that has been talked about for a long time. From the Friends of Stoneham Park, I hope you have a happy and peaceful Christmas. Richard Hearnden

www.trustedandlocal.co.uk AT successfully quoted for our garage conversion and kitchen refurb. Fred and his team were very competent and friendly. The quotation supplied was worked to with any extras explained. We were having both a garage conversion and new kitchen and they were able to work round us so that we had a useable kitchen for almost the whole project. The specialists they used were also competent and helpful. Work was done at the times that they said and Fred was always available to discuss any issues that arose. Stage payments were timetabled at the beginning of the work to avoid any nasty surprises. We were very happy with the standard of the work done. And would be happy to recommend the company for work similar to ours. Review of AT Construction by local resident

A real pleasure doing business with this company. Without exception every one of the team was friendly, helpful and professional. The standard of workmanship is outstanding, and my new doors are beautiful! Review of Countryman Improvements by local resident

Liam did a great job with the windows in our terraced house. All of them had broken sashes, damaged frames and rotting wood, and Liam's work was quick, high quality, and he was considerate of our son's asthma when it came to tidying. Top work. Review of Sashes & Sills by local resident

WEST HOVE

Could you be a school governor?

WEST HOVE INFANT SCHOOL SEEKS GOVERNORS FROM THE WIDER COMMUNITY West Hove Infant School is the largest infant school in the country; based on two sites at School Road and Connaught Road, the school has 610 children, 100 members of staff and an executive head (Wendy Harkness) who ensures the two sites are run as one school. Children spend three years at the school, starting in reception aged 4, and leave aged 7 ready for the more grown up world of junior school. The school prides itself in creating a community where children and their families feel welcome and valued. ‘A family of friends’ is the motto that appears on the children’s polo shirts and this sentiment of support and community is echoed throughout the school both 39 through formal teaching and the array of after school clubs the pupils can enjoy with their peers. Learning is approached creatively and whilst children might not realise they are learning the staff are ever mindful of the rigour required to ensure national targets are met. In its last Ofsted report the school was awarded Outstanding; this came only two years after the second site at Connaught Road was opened. Both school sites occupy mainly Victorian buildings, each with their own unique history. During WW1 the School Road site became part of the 2nd Eastern General Hospital, serving as a satellite to the Hove General Hospital. The Connaught site was designed by Victorian architect Thomas Simpson who designed thirteen schools across Brighton and Hove. It is rumoured that the actor Bernard Youens who played Stan Ogden in Coronation Street went to school at Connaught Road! The school relies on an army of volunteers to support the children and staff; this includes a board of governors who work behind the scenes to support the senior leadership team. This board is made up of parents, staff and members of the local community. Governors work as a team to support the development of teaching practices, school policies and the school’s finances. They also spend time with the pupils and teachers witnessing

the school in action. The school is seeking to recruit governors from the wider community. The position requires no previous experience as a governor. If you would like to find out more, please contact the Clerk of Governors Nikki Wheeler via email nikkiwheeler@westhove-inf.brighton-hove.sch.uk

A campaign to help people in fuel poverty...

A great challenge for charity...

BRIGHTON LIONS CLUB - PROJECT WENCESLAS

WEST HOVE

TAKE ON THE MARTLETS FIREWALK

41

Brighton Lions Club is launching Project Wenceslas, a campaign to help combat fuel poverty in the city of Brighton and Hove. People who receive the annual Winter Fuel Payment and feel they do not need it are invited to donate the amount to Brighton Lions, who can assure that every penny will go towards alleviating fuel poverty. Fuel poverty has increased mainly due to rising energy prices and more people die from cold housing than die on the roads each year. The main causes of excess winter deaths are heart attacks and strokes caused by increased blood pressure from living in a cold home, as well as respiratory and breathing infections. Donations can be made through Brighton Lions Club’s website at www.brightonlions.org.uk or cheques payable to Brighton Lions Club should be sent to the club at Lions Dene, The Deneway, Brighton, BN1 5AZ. People sending cheques are asked to confirm that their donations may be treated as Gift Aid so that the value of the donation can be increased by 25%.

Dare yourself, feel empowered and join the Martlets Firewalk at dusk on Saturday 9 February at The Venue, Western Esplanade, Kingsway. Martlets is taking fund-raising to a sizzling new level with a challenge that will inspire and give you a feel-good high. Clem Hunnisett from the Martlets said, “This is one of those once in a lifetime opportunities to prove to yourself that you can overcome your fears and do absolutely anything when you set your mind to it! We’ll be with you every step of the way to cheer you on. You can enter on your own, or perhaps get a brave group of friends or colleagues to take part together.” All funds raised will go towards helping Martlets to provide its life-changing care to local people who are living with terminal illness. The Firewalk costs £20 to register and entrants need to raise a minimum of £100 for Martlets to take part. To find out more please contact clem.hunnisett@martlets.org. uk or call: 01273 747455.
