We had some amazing entries to our cover competition. Many of them would have made excellent covers except for the fact that either the photos were landscape orientation and needed too much cropping or the adverts we place on the front cover obscured the main subject of the photo. Please keep them coming!!

News from the Friends of Stoneham Park…
I speak for the trees A few months ago, I saw a wonderful little internet video clip entitled What if Everyone in the World Planted a Tree? The answer is, of course, we would have 7.7 billion more trees on earth. But that is a tiny number compared to the 3,000 billion trees estimated to be growing on our planet and hardly covers those felled by humans since the end of the Neolithic. The benefits of trees are all well-known. Trees are aesthetically pleasing, offer habitats for countless species, and act as the world’s lungs, absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen. Removing greenhouse gases from the atmosphere, as well as producing less carbon, is a key aim in the fight against global warming and climate change. The weather this year has broken records. We had our wettest February on record and the driest May for 30 years. July and August saw blistering temperatures. Lockdown in March
PREMIER WINDOWS
Doors and Conservatories
and April was marked by very mild and pleasant conditions. If trees are to be a weapon in the armoury against global warming, then we had better get cracking. Stoneham Park has, sadly, lost three magnificent, massive elm trees in the last six years. Trees do die, and in Brighton and Hove, Dutch elm disease is endemic. But if mankind is to get serious about planting trees, we cannot just have them in managed forests out in the countryside, in Siberia or in the tropics. We have to plant trees wherever and whenever we can. Trees on the streets, trees in our gardens, trees in our parks. It is the trees lining the perimeter of Stoneham Park that gives it its special character. But with trees all over this area being felled because of disease, we must plant many more to keep up, and then plant even more. The Friends of Stoneham Park have planted two cherry trees and a pear tree in the last few years, and paid the council to plant an elm and an oak. Not all survived their first year. It would be great to see some of the tarmac pulled up and more trees put in its place. Where trees cannot go, shrubs, flowers, and grass should flourish. If we are to be serious about tackling global warming, we must start with trees in our own backyard. If you want to get involved in this and our other activities, please come to our AGM on Saturday 5 September at 3 o’clock in Stoneham Park. Richard Hearnden www.friendsofstonehampark.uk

Poets Corner news…
Campaign to save Studio 106 Two separate planning applications have been made to the council by Whaleback Ltd for prior approval to convert two light industrial units at 106A Coleridge Street, close to The Ancient Mariner pub, into 14 flats – seven in unit 1 and seven in unit 2.
Unit 1 on the ground floor is currently occupied by Kensington Refrigeration; Unit 2 on the first floor houses 20 professional artists in Studio 106. No external alterations are proposed and there would be no onsite parking. The applicants say that any increase in resident parking demand would be managed by the Controlled Parking Zone system already in place. Studio 106 launched in 2005 and regularly welcomes visitors to the Artists Open Houses festival, as well as hosting other exhibitions. Numerous objections have already been submitted to the council’s website. One tenant of Studio 106 wrote to the council: “I am one of the artists at Studio 106 and we all depend on our workspace to work - it cannot be done from home. Many artists have this as their sole source of income, and we are all serious artists, not just messing around. We also open up for the May festival, bringing footfall to the area plus exhibitions all year round.” Another said: “The location is a long
standing site for creative small businesses, with strong links to the local community, including our involvement with the Brighton Festival, regarding ‘Artists Open Houses’. I have been working from these premises for over 12 years. The loss of this space would be devastating for over 20 businesses and result in these artists unable to find or afford another space. This is a community that would be destroyed.” Another local resident commented: “Studio 106 is a wonderful and unique art space. It is a fantastic gallery and home to amazing local artists of international acclaim - all people who would lose their working space due to yet more over development in Poets Corner! Studio 106 is one of the last places of its kind left in our neighbourhood since the art studio next to Westows was knocked down and not re-homed, and should not be demolished for profit.” Both applications can be found on the council’s planning register: planningapps. brighton-hove.gov.uk - BH2020/01909 (unit 2) and BH2020/01911 (unit 1).

News from Carmen Appich and Chris Henry, Labour councillors for Westbourne ward…
Westbourne Ward Councillor News... Chris and I have been very busy in what now seems like endless Zoom meetings trying to keep things running. Sadly we lost our majority on 23 July and have handed over the administration to the Green Party, with Labour forming the official opposition. However, we both retain our portfolios on planning, licensing and tourism, equalities communities and culture (TECC). I’m also to join the environment transport and sustainability committee from September which I’m very excited about. I’ve had a very detailed and positive handover with the new joint chairs of the TECC committee on equalities issues. I’ve written an article about my fears relating to the government white paper on planning, and I spoke at the last Council meeting on equalities, modern slavery, Madeira Drive motoring events and planning policy. I’ve also sat on a few licensing panels, making decisions about licence reviews and new licences, and chaired two meetings of the i360 members’ working group. Chris has been moving things forward with securing community funding for improvements to areas such as Sackville Road and Poets Corner. We are hoping to improve the street scene, wellbeing facilities and the public realm. Chris and I have met with the new administration and officers to make sure some further action is taken on enforcement of unauthorised camping, litter, cycling and aggressive begging, while trying to engage with vulnerable groups. We are keeping pressure on officers and the new administration around litter collection, streetlights and other day to day issues. Chris has been in touch with our PCSO, who also attended the last West Hove Forum meeting, to arrange a ward walk-about. This
is following up on the many emails and calls we have received about drug dealing and lower levels of anti-social behaviour during lockdown. A special meeting about issues surrounding Hove seafront, including lifeguard services, is about to happen as I write this - in response to the sad deaths of three people in the waters off Hove seafront. This will also focus on how we can deal with the pressures on our seafront while we have many more visitors than usual on day trips and coming for “staycation”. We are keeping residents informed via official council correspondence and through the West Hove Forum. Councillors Carmen Appich and Chris Henry Carmen.Appich@brighton-hove.gov.uk Christopher.Henry@brighton-hove.gov.uk

Skatepark Redesign
Pitstop Café open on seafront
Skatepark designers Maverick have drawn up a conceptual redesign of Hove Lagoon skatepark.
The Pitstop Café is now open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays by the croquet and bowling clubs on the Western Lawns. Opening hours are from 10am till sundown, weather permitting. It is run by Penny and Terence, who serve drinks, freshly made pizzas and burgers, rolls, croissants and home-made cakes. Anyone can use the café – you don’t need to be playing bowls or croquet.
Wish Park mural The new mural for the electricity substation in Wish Park is due to be painted during the first week in September.
An online consultation closes on 31st August: https://docs.google.com/ forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfFgDck9XfjsjV4fq1bKAqT-CpAeSVM36CjL-Arraf9H8zF8A/ viewform The new design has a focus on street features and open rolling space which will offer something different to the other facilities in Brighton & Hove, with a plaza style. It is hoped that it will encourage younger, less experienced riders to get involved. LED lighting is planned as part of the design, encouraging use throughout the year and into the evenings. This lighting will be programmed to be turned on and off at agreed times.
Security fencing will be in place during the project. Once the painting is completed, shrubs will be planted on a small plot of land adjacent to the mural to attract insects and birds. If all goes to plan, the mural will be launched on Saturday 26th September. For more information, visit: uk.gofundme. com/f/wish-park-hove-community-mural

Extra floor for Hove Manor
St Leonard’s Church
The council’s Planning Committee has approved a plan to erect a single-storey extension at roof level to Hove Manor flats in Hove Street, which is currently a six-storey building.
Services at St Leonard’s Church in New Church Road have now restarted. They take place at 9.30am on Sundays. There is a communion service every other week, alternating weekly with a Service of the Word. (6th September will be a Service of the Word.)
An artist’s impression of Hove Manor with an extra floor
The services will necessarily be different due to Covid-19; there is no singing and face masks must be worn.
Two extra two-bedroom flats and one three-bedroom flat will be created. All the new flats will have front terraces. A previous application to create an extra storey was rejected last year. The Conservation Advisory Group considered that the design had been improved since the last application. These changes include an increased set back from the edges of the roof and a reduced overall footprint. 27 objections were received, but the Planning Committee were told that the additional height was appropriate within its context, the design was acceptable and there would be no harm to the conservation area or significant impact on neighbouring amenity in terms of overlooking or overshadowing. The Planning Committee voted six to two in favour of granting the application. J.H. BRICKWORK Our Services include

West Hove news…
16 Local news…
News from the West Hove Forum A second virtual meeting of the West Hove Forum took place on 29th July. Drug Dealing and Anti-Social Behaviour: PCSOs Aidan Goodwin (Westbourne ward) and Jess Lee (Wish ward) reported that drug dealing and anti-social behaviour by youngsters are currently the two main issues for the police in West Hove. Arrests have been made in the last few weeks in relation to drug dealing. There is a general issue of groups of children with more time on their hands causing problems in parks and open spaces. Extra patrols have been taking place in areas including Wish Park and Stoneham Park and the CCTV near the beach huts has been regularly looked at. Rough Sleepers: There are still new encampments regularly appearing on Hove Lawns. The police don’t have the powers to remove a tent but have to work with the council to get campers to leave, which takes a couple of days. Rough sleepers should be reported via www.streetlink.org.uk or 0300 500 0914. StreetLink reports are passed directly to Brighton & Hove’s commissioned Street Outreach Service who work with people sleeping rough to address their needs and access housing. School Streets: From September, 14 schools including West Hove Infants and Hove Junior School will be taking part in the city’s School Streets project. This will see temporary restrictions placed on roads close to schools’ entrances (including School Road) during drop-off and pick-up times.
Hove Junior School
Some schools aren’t able to take part for technical reasons while some have chosen not to take part. The council hopes that people will support the headteachers’ decisions made with local health and safety in mind. The restrictions will help allow physical distancing during the Covid-19 pandemic and will encourage pupils and their parents to choose active forms of transport. More information can be found on the council website - www.brighton-hove.gov. uk/school-streets - including details of the schools affected and exemptions. Healthy Neighbourhood Fund: Don’t forget that Healthy Neighbourhood Funding is available to community groups serving the West Hove area with a project that has health and wellbeing outcomes. Application forms are available from westhoveforum@gmail.com. What do you know about the West Hove Forum? Do you like what we’re doing and what do you think we should be doing? We’d love to hear your thoughts at westhoveforum@gmail.com. West Hove Forum meetings are attended by ward councillors and community representatives. Our next (virtual) meeting is at 2pm on 9th September. If you would like to attend on behalf of a group or business, please email us.

19 Meet one of the founders of a new local estate agency…
Cox & Co Estate Agents, founded by Marc Cox and his father Tony, opened in Boundary Road earlier this year. Marc tells us more about the business… Why did you decide to go into business for yourself?
Marc Cox
I have always loved helping people find and sell their homes. It is a great industry to be involved in; you get to meet lots of different people and see inside their homes which is always their most prized possession. What previous experience do you have in estate agency? I have over 30 years’ experience in the property market; I was actually selling homes before I could drive. I started my estate agency career as an office junior and while working for a large corporate firm I was approached by the late Glenn Mishon of Mishon Mackay. I joined him initially as Manager of the Portslade branch, eventually becoming Sales Director overseeing seven offices, and in 2010 when I was made partner in the firm by Glenn and Barbara it was one of my proudest moments. I have always wanted to run my own business and have the freedom to make choices on the marketing and strategy that goes with running your own estate agency. When the opportunity arose to go into business with my father and set up Cox & Co I did not hesitate. My father Tony who is a chartered surveyor has spent all of his working life in the property business, starting off in estate agency in London, then working for property investment and development companies, a pension fund and local government, before becoming property director with a large construction and property development group based in Sussex and Surrey.
How does your business differ from other estate agents? We aim to provide a hands-on service where our customers deal directly with the owners of the business. We advertise on the three major property portals Rightmove, Zoopla and Prime Location; our competitive fees include Energy Performance Certificates, floor plans and professional photography without any agency tie-in period. For our great NHS staff, we will market their property within the BN3, BN41 and BN43 area commission free. What’s the housing market like at the moment? One word – buoyant. Since we reopened in May we have been busy. There was an element of pent-up demand caused by the lockdown and Brexit. This was followed by many people having decided during lockdown that they needed a different style of property with garden etc. We are finding our London advertising is proving very successful as Brighton & Hove has become an even more desirable place to live after the pandemic.

21 News from the Aldrington Bellringers…
It’s more than 70 years since the bells of St Leonard’s Church were last silent. Back in 1948 the bells were sent away for a major overhaul, after the extended silence during the war when the ringing of church bells was to be a warning of invasion. Fortunately we have a set of handbells that are normally only used to ring carols at Christmas. So members of the band have been meeting in the churchyard to play an increasing range of simple tunes. It is very different to ringing the bells in the church tower but has, at least, provided a reminder of which day of the week it is, and the chance for a bit of chat. But this year, the dreadful Covid-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on all our lives including the closure of the church and a suspension of bell ringing. The primary purpose of bell ringing is to welcome people to church but it is also a challenging and satisfying hobby. The members of the Aldrington band of ringers have missed the opportunity to practise and demonstrate their skill as well as meet socially.
Church services have resumed at 9.30 on Sunday mornings with limited, socially distanced, ringing. The restrictions mean ringing on just three of the six bells giving little scope for ‘ringing the changes’. (There are just 6 sequences on 3 bells as against 240 patterns on 6.) Several local people have also told us how much they have missed the bells although it seems likely one social media comment referred to an ice cream van. Let us hope that it will be possible to get back to ringing on all six church bells before too long. Colin Brown Aldrington Bellringers Travel to

23 The Friends of Hove Park sent us this précis of a council notice on a log in Hove Park…
Trap log being monitored for elm bark beetle... HOVE PARK
You may have become aware that we have sadly lost a number of elm trees in the area having fallen victim of elm disease and these are being promptly removed to stop the disease spreading. The disease is a fungus spread by a very small beetle which specifically feeds and breeds on elm trees and elm timber. The city holds the National Collection of Elms and has since the early 1970s been internationally renowned for its elm disease control programme. The success of this has relied on early detection of infected trees and the destruction of timber that provides a breeding site for the beetle. This log has been placed here to trap any elm bark beetles that may be in the area and is being closely monitored by council staff. It will only be on site until mid-September at the latest but may be swapped if beetles are found breeding under the bark. Can You Help Save Our Elm Trees? We believe the recent losses we have suffered may be due to locally stored elm timber, perhaps as logs for firewood or even sawn timber being used for furniture. Any elm wood with the bark attached can harbour the beetle, providing a breeding site where beetles can emerge, flying on to infect trees in the area. It may also be due to a dead elm tucked away in a rear garden and now hosting thousands of breeding beetles. Anyone with wood stored for their wood burner or fire can have this checked by us for free. If elm logs are found we can replace these, with ash, oak or beech logs (a better quality fuel wood) also without charge. Elm wood should be avoided as it poses a risk to elm trees
locally and is a poor burner summed up in an old folklore rhyme: “Elm wood burns like churchyard mould. Even the very flames burn cold.” Anyone concerned about a tree in the city who thinks it may have elm disease should also contact us. If caught promptly we can save individual trees by pruning out the infection. Infected trees usually look like they are going into autumn colour changes prematurely. The leaves turn yellow then brown and start to drop in July/August time rather than October. For further information please contact the Arboricultural Team at BHCC on 01273 290000 or email arboriculture@brighton-hove.gov.uk

25 Meet a Hove Park resident who found solace in poetry during lockdown…
Hove Park Person… Melanie Haagman Melanie Haagman lives opposite Hove Park. She has recently published “Lexical Lockdown: Poems about Binge-Watching, Exercise Mishaps, Fridge-Surfing and Other Pandemical Pursuits”. HOVE PARK
How long have you lived near Hove Park? I have lived in Hove all my life, but moved near Hove Park in June 2019. Why did you decide to publish a book? During lockdown I was temporarily out of work and like most people I found it a very unsettling time. Poetry is something I have always used as a way of trying to make sense of difficult situations and the lockdown poetry came pouring out of me. I wrote a poem each day of lockdown and after the second month I realised its potential for a book. As the poems were all dated, it captured a chronological account of lockdown (almost a diary format), which included news stories, significant events and just the general struggles we all faced being in lockdown. References to Captain Tom Moore, Clapping for the NHS, Stockpiling, Binge-Watching TV series, Piers Morgan and many more… Tell us more about your poems… The poems are on the whole light-hearted and amusing but I couldn’t ignore the utter severity of the times we are and have been facing so others are raw and honest. All of the poems are based on truth and real experiences that happened to me during lockdown. I started posting them online on my ‘Girl on the Edge Poetry’ Facebook page and they gained a lot of support and positivity. Followers claimed that the poems were helping them to get through their day and some even said that they were the highlight of their day. This encouraged and inspired me to continue writing them.
What were the best and worst aspects of lockdown for you? The best part of lockdown was having all the time in the world to write, which I wouldn’t ordinarily have, and really appreciating all the simple things in life that we take for granted. The worst part was being unable to see my grandma. Are you continuing to write poems now that lockdown has eased? I am, not every day but as soon as I have some inspiration, I am back at my laptop tapping away frantically! “Lexical Lockdown” by Melanie Haagman is published by The Conrad Press. It is available from Amazon and to order from Waterstones.

Fundraiser for Pancreatic Cancer UK On 29th and 30th August a brave and committed team of 14 individuals from The Pensions Regulator (TPR), many of whom live in Hove and Brighton, were due to walk 100km.
Desperate not to waste the training and conscious of significant donations already collected, the team decided to conduct their own walk of 50km on 29th August (Eastbourne to Hove Park) and 50km on 30th August (Arundel to Hove Park). Given the absence of refuelling stations, massage stops and anyone providing directions, it is easy to see why this was arguably a tougher undertaking! They did this for Pancreatic Cancer UK, having heard in January that their friend and colleague, Simon, had stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Simon was immediately signed off work and began chemotherapy which continues (with positive results thus far) to this day. Not wanting to stand by

31 A great new campaign by local residents to tackle the never-ending litter problem…
#LeaveNoTraceBrighton Campaign With the easing of lockdown our open spaces have been ever more popular with people meeting friends and family outside and this has led to large amounts of litter being left on beaches and parks with bins being overwhelmed. On June 27th Cityclean removed 11 tonnes of waste rubbish from the beach, the largest amount ever collected. Something had to change and the #LeaveNoTraceBrighton campaign was born on Brighton seafront stretching to Hove Lawns. Headed up by Brighton-based visual creative Coral Evans, the #LeaveNoTraceBrighton action-based campaign has been encouraging beach users and local businesses to take responsibility for their litter and look after and cherish the wonderful beach and marine environments we have in our city. But that’s not where it has stopped as other residents have also got on board with the campaign and more recently Hove Park has adopted the #LeaveNoTraceBrighton campaign, with residents from other areas of the city also interested in doing the same. Through beach cleans, litter picks and social media campaigns the #LeaveNoTraceBrighton campaign is hoping to encourage everyone from beach and park users to local businesses and the local council to play their part in addressing the litter problem. The campaign has been welcomed by local cafés and take-away outlets, shining a light on both the businesses’ and their customers’ refuse responsibilities. Several businesses on the seafront, who have struggled to cope with the overwhelming litter on the beach especially during

lockdown, were in support of a strong, hard-hitting and impactful campaign. #LeaveNoTraceBrighton also has potential to support large events such as Brighton Pride and the Brighton Marathon. So if you are out and about on the beaches and parks please dispose of your litter responsibly; if bins are full, find another or take it home. If you want to get involved with the #LeaveNoTraceBrighton campaign actions, then get in touch or follow them on social media using the hashtag. 35 “Sussex by the Sea” was played at the liberation of Singapore in 1945…
“Far o’er the seas we wander” 75 years ago, whilst many at home celebrated the end of war in Europe, conflict was still raging in the Far East. HMS Sussex
Defeat in Singapore in 1942, the largest British surrender in history, sent shockwaves through the British Empire as 140,000 allied troops and Singapore citizens were captured, wounded or killed – among the POWS were 32,000 Indian, 16,000 British and 14,000 Australian soldiers. So, it was with great jubilation that HMS Sussex (and her convoy) entered the harbour on 4th September 1945 to liberate Singapore, the marine band on board playing “Sussex by the Sea”. On landing, they were shocked at the pitiful state of the hundreds of starving and sick POWs and civilian internees of all nationalities waiting on the jetty. One of those present at the Japanese surrender on board HMS Sussex was Major General Ralph Hone. This British army officer, constitutional lawyer and high-ranking civil servant had arrived fresh from overseeing the handover to civilian rule in Malaya. After the war, he was appointed Secretary-General to the Governor-General of Malaya; Deputy Commissioner-General in South-East Asia; Governor and Commander-in-Chief North Borneo; Head of the legal division of the Commonwealth Relations Office; & Vice President of the Royal Commonwealth Society. He was
GENERAL
British veterans of this war often referred to themselves as The Forgotten Army and their other comrades whose contribution was never fully recognised as The Forgotten Allies of the Forgotten Army (for thousands and thousands of colonial servicemen from across the British Empire fought in the Far East). They suffered intense jungle warfare, tropical diseases, and a 1-in-3 death rate in Japanese POW camps.

knighted and awarded the KBE & KCMG. However, he was not from a privileged background – son of a teacher, brought up at 89 Sackville Road in Hove, he had been a Varndean Grammar School boy. His early ambitions to be a civil servant had been disrupted by the First World War when his courageous leadership of his men earned him the Military Cross. When we can once again freely and safely roam the streets of our fabulous city, why not learn more about their fascinating history? Spider Season... After the early August heatwave, the cooler rains remind us that another season is just around the corner.

39 A charity event on 9th October…
Local news…
Sleep Easy to tackle youth homelessness
Our Plastic Ocean
Since March, YMCA DownsLink Group, who provide supported accommodation and housing advice to young people across the region, have seen a 61% increase in presentations of homelessness compared to last year. To compound the problem, the charity had to cancel its biggest annual fundraising event, Sleep Easy, in March. So, they have re-invented Sleep Easy to encourage people to sign up on Friday 9th October 2020 and raise money by sleeping ‘anywhere but your bed’. Just grab a sleeping bag and sleep anywhere you like - your garden, hallway, lounge or any other safe space. Children and young people are positively encouraged to take part and will be provided with special activity packs. There will also be virtual entertainment on offer throughout the evening. To find out more or sign up visit ymcadlg.org/get-involved/fundraise/sleep-easy/ To donate, visit justgiving.com/campaign/YMCADLGSleepEasy
The show, by award-winning photographer Mandy Barker, is on display until October as part of a new Ocean Blues website. Photographer Mandy Barker collects debris from shorelines across the world and transforms them into powerful and captivating images. At first glance, her images are reminiscent of sea creatures and corals suspended in a dark void beneath the sea, but closer inspection reveals a more disturbing reality. From footballs to fishing nets, cotton-buds to coffee-cup lids, she highlights the incongruous plastic items now ubiquitous in our seas. If current trends continue, our oceans could contain more plastic than fish by 2050. Our Plastic Ocean spans a decade of Mandy Barker’s work including the series Soup, composite images of discarded plastic objects; and Albatross, revealing 276 pieces of plastic found inside the stomach of an albatross chick. 41 A Brighton-based charity…
Sussex Nightstop… a safe place to stay Alison Marino is Executive Director of Brighton based charity Sussex Nightstop. Sussex Nightstop co-ordinate volunteer hosts who provide a safe place to stay for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Who does Sussex Nightstop help?
Somewhere safe to sleep is essential in people having the means, energy and confidence with which to access the resources and support necessary in securing a safe, longer-term home. Our volunteer hosts provide just that. By opening up their spare room, individuals can sleep well, have a hot meal, access crucial amenities including somewhere private to wash and above all experience kindness in an otherwise bleak situation. The majority of Nightstop guests have either suffered a family or relationship breakdown or breakdown of their tenancy often brought about by a number of combining pressures such as a strain on finances due to income loss or austerity measures, the challenge of living with poor mental health and a local private rental market increasingly beyond affordability. Regardless of reason, Nightstop guests are individuals – both interesting and interested in life, often working or studying, who have aspirations and plans and who just need a secure place from which to navigate this phase in their life. What difference has Covid-19 made? Covid-19 has brought even more anxiety for those facing or experiencing homelessness. Many families and individuals have faced challenging lockdown circumstances and the end of the furlough scheme and the prospect of a recession on the horizon will only precipitate the issues that place people at risk of homelessness.
GENERAL
Sussex Nightstop provides a safety-net for young people and adults age 16 upwards who may otherwise be forced to sleep rough. The risks of rough-sleeping, including the threat to physical and mental well-being, are well known and every night of rough-sleeping worsens the outlook for that person.
Sussex Nightstop is a community response to homelessness and a comprehensive effort across the city has never been more critical than at this time. Here’s how you can help: Volunteer Hosts: get trained and supported to offer your spare room to a young person or adult. Fundraisers: organise activities to raise funds for Sussex Nightstop Businesses: talk to us about getting involved Spread the word: tell your friends about what we do. 49 Advice from the council…
Please don’t use inflatables in the sea Brighton & Hove City Council has urged people to keep themselves safe if they go in the sea and not to use inflatables, following two fatal incidents in the first two weeks of August. Brighton & Hove’s coastline can be extremely dangerous, with winds coming in from multiple directions causing dangerous wave conditions. The RNLI guidance is that inflatables shouldn’t be used in the sea, as they can easily be swept out.Â
GENERAL
The lifeguard service is operating at a reduced level due to Covid-19 restrictions and it is important to follow sea safety guidance: • learn what the beach flags mean, and take them seriously • keep close to the shore • remember sea swimming is different from being in a pool
• make sure children are closely supervised • teach yourself and children to float in the water • always wear a proper life vest if using a kayak or SUP • ensure the kayak or SUP is attached to you by a leash • overloading a kayak or SUP with people will make it unsafe
Wills
• if you get into trouble and have your mobile phone, call 999 and ask for the CoastguardÂ

Sole Sister welcomes new podiatrist... Zoe Broomer Zoe has been part of the Sole Sister team while working on reception for the last two years, as she completed her Podiatry degree. We are very excited that she has decided to stay and work as a podiatrist.
GENERAL
Hi, my name is Zoe and I am the newest clinical team member at Sole Sister Podiatry. As well as working in clinic on Saturday and Wednesday evenings, I will be carrying out home visits every Thursday and Friday to provide foot care to those who may find it tricky to visit us for treatment. This means we are able to take on more visits, and waiting times have reduced. Our home visit area is BN1, BN2 and BN3. Prior to graduating as a mature student at the University of Brighton, I worked a

number of years within customer service and was fortunate to travel a lot as part of my job. At the age of 29, I turned my attention to a career in Podiatry, as the profession sounded both varied and rewarding and the opportunity to help those in discomfort greatly appealed. Having always been a people person, I gain genuine satisfaction and enjoyment from interacting with the general public, particularly if I am able to help them in some way. With this in mind, if you have been struggling with your feet or they are feeling a bit neglected, please do get in touch with us at Sole Sister, where an appointment can be arranged for you in the comfort of your own home.
