BOTOLPHS CEMETERY Annington Road, Botolphs, Nr Bramber, West Sussex. BN44 3WB Botolphs Cemetery lies in the Adur Valley, within the South Downs National Park. It was created by the Parish Councils of Bramber, Steyning and Upper Beeding in August 1988 and is a non-denominational, non-consecrated civil cemetery. They aim to preserve and enhance the rural nature of Botolphs Cemetery in harmony with its surroundings; Botolphs is a lawned cemetery. Next door is the thousand year old St Botolphs Church, providing a place for reflection and comfort for the bereaved. Newly restored, but no longer a Parish Church, funeral services may still be conducted here.

Botolphs Cemetery is and will continue to be a final resting place for local residents and former residents. Subject to agreement, other people with some local connection may also be interred here. Applications, for a burial or for ashes to be placed in Botolphs Cemetery, should be made to the Clerk via your appointed Funeral Director. Additionally, applications to make an ‘advanced purchase’ to reserve a place in Botolphs Cemetery should be made directly with the Clerk, who will supply details of current fees and charges. Concerned about your home being sold to fund your future care fees? The Issue

You probably own your home as joint tenants if you are a couple and solely if you are single. For couples this means you own it wholly, jointly and severally. Ultimately therefore you do not own it 50:50 as you might have assumed. You actually own all of it together and when one partner dies the surviving partner owns it solely and absolutely. It is sole and absolute ownership that enables a whole property to be taken into consideration as an asset by the local authority and puts the property in danger of needing to be sold to fund care.

The Reality Today

The care Act 2014 introduced in April 2015 allows local authorities to assess your assets to determine if you need to pay for your own care under the new charges and assessment of resources regulations. Currently if you have assets above £23,250, you are on your own and require care, you will probably have to pay for it all - currently averaging around £1,000 per week. Savings, cash and income would be used first and then your property would need to be taken into consideration. You would be expected to pay for all of your care until such time as your assets were depleted to below the £23,250 threshold. You would then pay for a proportion of your care until your assets were below £14,250 - at which point all your future care would be paid for after any relevant income was taken into account.

The Solution

For couples, simply by changing the way you own your property well in advance of any care considerations i.e. from joint tenants to tenants in common and by setting up two property Trusts either immediately or within a properly structured Will at the same time in most cases, protect the integrity of your home should you ever require care in the future, so long as avoiding care fees was not a primary motivating reason behind the implementation of the strategy - i.e. you should be looking to protect your half of your property should your spouse remarry after your death, or you should be looking to ensure that your children would not lose 50% of their inheritance should they be made bankrupt or divorce or for example you should be looking to prevent a generational inheritance tax burden in the future. These are all sound reasons for implementing this strategy which in themselves are not deliberate deprivation of assets, but the implementation of which protects the integrity of the property.

Fundraising: Our main event of the year is the Winter Fair. Steyning Grammar School does very little fundraising for itself, focusing instead on raising money for outside charities. Our funding makes a significant difference to students; the items we purchase would not otherwise be available due to the pressure on the school’s budget. The Winter Fair usually includes an Auction of Promises and a Grand Draw – if you are able to donate a product or service, please contact us at fosg@sgs.uk.net. If you are able to help with the planning of the Fair and/or on a stall, please do let us know – it is only through the generosity of volunteers that we are able to run this event.

THE VINTAGE YEARS Don’t be lonely! Come and join us! We meet the first Friday of every month at 2pm, in the Steyning Centre for fun, entertainment and company. Over the last few months we have learnt about “Farming in the Fifties” and wondered at “Unexplained Mysteries”; made some really attractive Christmas decorations - even the men enjoyed that! - danced round to (or listened to) The Tuck Shop Boys, Taylor Maid and John Beever – not to mention, cream teas, quizzes and the odd glass of sherry! We also run outings once a month at or below cost price, to places as varied as a boat trip to Buckler’s Hard, a train trip from Bodiam or a visit to Haywards Heath Fire Station. Some trips are a full day, sometimes a half day and some just a pub lunch.
