Spring is coming at last and with the approach of a new tennis season we hear from Mel Bowden, a coach at Queen’s Park Tennis Club.

We have news from the new Brighton General Hospital Action Group on their campaign for a community plan for the site. There are details of several classical music concerts in the area and other events coming up include the Sussex Beer & Cider Festival at Brighton Racecourse. There’s also a new exhibition of hats by master milliner Stephen Jones at the Royal Pavilion. He has designed glamorous headwear for celebrities including the new Duchess of Sussex, Lady Gaga, Kate Moss and Mick Jagger. Don’t forget Mother’s Day on 31st March and have a great month! Meet Queen’s Park tennis coach Mel Bowden...

Local Person...Mel Bowden

I live in Kemp Town and coach tennis at Queens Park Tennis Club. I did my tennis training at the LTA’s residential centre at Bisham Abbey, and then worked at schools throughout Sussex. I ran tennis holidays in Portugal and ended up buying a farmhouse and converting it into a villa with pool and tennis court. My wife and I remember our children enjoying an endless five year holiday while it was built.

later moving to Holland where I worked for a radio station based in Hilversum, but operating from a ship in the North Sea.

I have been part-time coaching at QPTC for some years, and recently moved my coaching activities here full time. In 2018, myself and five other directors formed a community interest company following the council’s decision to allow self-management. I have project managed the refurbishment of the club house, set up the online booking system, supervised the relaying and repainting of the courts, installed a new security system, and negotiated the lease and insurance deals, as well as operating drop-in classes four days a week. It has taken up a huge amount of time and effort from myself and the other directors.

Off-court, my hobby is playing guitar in a covers band.

During that time, myself and a fellow coach began developing an old closed down grass court tennis club in Kemp Town which had its origins in the 1890s. The club now has four courts, floodlights and a pavilion.

Min d– mus cle trai The overall effect has seen QPTC flourish. Last month British Tennis publishedning a very positive case study on our progress, and the club has just welcomed its 200th adult member. to My first sporting interest wasn’t tennis. I played ice help hockey with the Brighton Tiger Cubs aged 13. But a career in broadcasting was to take up most of my you working life. After training as a broadcast engineer, I started as a station assistant at BBC Radio Brighton, enjo A host of volunteers have kept the club ticking over, helping with weeding, social events and painting. It’s an ongoing project, with phase two likely to see a significant improvement to the clubhouse facilities, including a new kitchen. We also have a new coach Jimmy Smith who has significantly boosted our juniors development programme.

Back in England I formed a company dedicated to constructing radio studios. We built 100 studios around the world, including BBC local and national centres and numerous commercial stations, including Southern Sound in Brighton. Although the company is still operating, I moved to full time tennis coaching in the mid 90s.

This article is by the Brighton General Hospital Action Group...

Brighton General Hospital site... stop the "theft" of public land Brighton General Hospital Action Group (BGHAG)* are very concerned about the proposed sale and redevelopment of the Brighton General Hospital site. What the public has actually been told about the sale of this public asset is...virtually nothing. We have the warm words of the Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust (SCFT) Board, owners of the site, wanting so-called ‘affordable’ housing to fund the construction of their Community Health Hub and a new Trust HQ.

It was pointed out to SCFT that, in their on-line consultation survey, respondents were forced to choose one of the options that the Trust proposed, so, if you liked none of them, or wanted to suggest an alternative, this was not possible. Our action group is developing an alternative community plan for the site. We have support from councillors and welcome the council motion that was unanimously carried in July 2018: “This Council notes that the Brighton General Hospital site is a public asset, and as such should be

used for public good; prioritising NHS use first and foremost with any spare land used for truly affordable housing.” The Royal Sussex County Hospital has a crying need for discharge beds, called step-down/community/social care beds, and we argue that with extremely high acute bed occupancy rates, discharge beds should be provided by SCFT on the site, freeing up acute beds and beds in A&E. SCFT say that they have not been asked to provide these beds at the Brighton General Hospital site by Brighton & Hove Clinical Commissioning Group, though it is a service that SCFT provides. Consideration of the provision of ‘affordable’ housing for key health workers is mentioned in the plans, but only ‘within the economic constraints of the above’, ie, raising funds from the sale of the site to provide for the Community Health Hub (it doesn’t mention the new Trust HQ). So, maybe it’ll have to be non-affordable housing if that’s the only way to raise funds?

Finally, there is a chronic shortage of housing, at ‘social rents’. There are 1700 homeless households, living in emergency accommodation, in Brighton and Hove. So we are calling on the council to buy the spare land for truly affordable housing and community use. *Brighton General Hospital Action Group are a coalition of campaigning organisations: Brighton and Hove Housing Coalition, Living Rent Campaign, Save Whitehawk Hill Campaign and Sussex Defend the NHS.

www.trustedandlocal.co.uk AT successfully quoted for our garage conversion and kitchen refurb. Fred and his team were very competent and friendly. The quotation supplied was worked to with any extras explained. We were having both a garage conversion and new kitchen and they were able to work round us so that we had a useable kitchen for almost the whole project. The specialists they used were also competent and helpful. Work was done at the times that they said and Fred was always available to discuss any issues that arose. Stage payments were timetabled at the beginning of the work to avoid any nasty surprises. We were very happy with the standard of the work done. And would be happy to recommend the company for work similar to ours. Review of AT Construction by local resident

A real pleasure doing business with this company. Without exception every one of the team was friendly, helpful and professional. The standard of workmanship is outstanding, and my new doors are beautiful! Review of Countryman Improvements by local resident

Liam did a great job with the windows in our terraced house. All of them had broken sashes, damaged frames and rotting wood, and Liam's work was quick, high quality, and he was considerate of our son's asthma when it came to tidying. Top work. Review of Sashes & Sills by local resident

Stephen Jones Hats at the Royal Pavilion Glamorous hats from one of the world’s top designers are now on show at the Royal Pavilion. Stephen Jones Hats at the Royal Pavilion sees the spectacular state rooms filled with exquisite hats created by master milliner Stephen Jones OBE. During his 40 year career, Jones has dressed the finest heads from across the globe – most recently the Duchess of Sussex, as well as Lady Gaga, Kate Moss and Mick Jagger. This new, site-specific exhibition shows hats worn by these celebrities and others, along with those made in collaboration with top fashion designers, including Dior, Thom Browne, Giles Deacon, Comme des Garçons, Marc Jacobs and Matty Bovan. “I grew up in a seaside town, but Brighton to me seemed exciting, exotic, and it symbolised art and freedom,” said Stephen. “In 2012, I designed a collection called

‘Chinoiserie-on-Sea’ for which I researched Brighton, and in particular the Pavilion, extensively; and it feels like showing my hats there is almost like a homecoming. I have never had the opportunity to display hats in the environment which inspired them.” Highlights include: •
