Welcome...
Q
Welcome to Queen’s Park Living!!
In our July issue, we have details of a new event which promises to inspire you to lead a more sustainable lifestyle – CleverGreen Festival on The Level (Saturday 20th July). We also hear from a volunteer for local charity Time to Talk Befriending on the benefits of befriending. Volunteers are particularly needed in this part of Brighton. If you enjoy looking at beautiful gardens, why not visit the Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail on 27-28 July, which this year includes a garden in South Avenue, as well as an opportunity to look around the Macmillan Horizon Centre. We didn’t quite get the weather most of us wanted in June... Here’s to a sunny July!

A major new free eco-festival...
CleverGreen Festival on The Level... Sustainable lifestyle and green business CleverGreen Group is launching the CleverGreen Festival at The Level on Saturday 20 July. Over three million people attend UK festivals each year and between them generate a staggering 23,500 tonnes of waste – equating to 2.8kg of waste per person, per day. Research suggests that, of that amount, only 32% is recycled, with the other 68% heading for landfill sites – and so CleverGreen is a festival with a difference. The free-to-attend event aims to be as close to zerowaste as possible with: ● No single-use plastic on site.
● An extensive waste management plan. ● Power provided by options such as vegetable oil, solar panels and bike-powered generators. ● A commitment to educate others with workshops, talks and demonstrations. The packed line-up brings together a market full of ethical brands, sustainability talks, workshops, a dedicated kids area, live music and sustainably sourced food and drinks – creating an essential space for festival-goers to discover the importance of sustainability and eco-living.
The main stage and acoustic tent will be lined up with the best homegrown musicians that Brighton has to offer, which includes TenderHooks, Snipit And The Hotrocks, The Big Sky, Lucy Wylde, Across The Sea and many more. For adults, the festival will have a CleverGreen Wellbeing area where various classes, including meditation and yoga, will take place. With the clothes-swapping trend taking off across the country,
CleverGreen will also feature a dedicated Clothes Swap Arena (aiming to be the biggest one ever put on in Brighton) where participants can refresh their wardrobe by swapping their own clothes for someone else’s donated garments. The festival will also feature a range of activities for children of all ages, from spin art to junk modelling and felt classes.
Whether you’re looking to stock up on grocery staples or try something completely new, there are plenty of opportunities to discover a selection of wonderful eco-essentials, and sustainable, zero-waste food and drink at the event. Festival director Jo Child says: “Not only is it a fun day out for friends and family but it’s a great opportunity to find out more about all things eco-living and the benefits it has to offer you, your family, animals and the planet. Gates open on Saturday 20th at 11am – and we can’t wait to welcome you!” For more information, please visit www.clevergreengroup.com.

New Book...

A new book featuring a story by Queen’s Park resident Sheila Auguste...
Hidden Sussex
Celebrates Black, Asian & Minority Ethnic Voices Queen’s Park resident, relationship counsellor and writer Sheila Auguste is a contributor to a new anthology, Hidden Sussex, celebrating Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic voices across the county, published by Writing Our Legacy (WOL). Hidden Sussex features all kinds of writing - from fiction to poetry, and from prose to memoir - inspired by the experience of living, working and playing in Sussex. The Writing Our Legacy project brings fresh and untold perspectives on the Sussex experience from local BAME voices.
23 writers, including 14 from Brighton, were selected for the anthology, including Sheila Auguste, who moved here over 20 years ago from East London, where she was born to St Lucian parents. Sheila’s contribution is a story about her late father and what they would do together in Brighton if he was still here. The book includes a newly-commissioned map and an alternative flag for Sussex Day (16th June), created
in Afro-Caribbean stylings, plus a new directory of places to go in Sussex, all from the BAME perspective. The anthology tells stories of many firsts – eg first trips to Afro-Caribbean hairdressers or a first visit to the Chattri memorial – as well as middles and ends, such as raising children, family and death. Readers are transported to Sussex places such as Cuckmere Haven and Brighton Pavilion, and also elsewhere – to Pakistan, India, Iran. Some authors deal with pressing issues of contemporary Britain, including Brexit and the Windrush scandal, while others look back to historical times.
The book is now on sale as an e-book from Amazon (£6.99). For information on how to get a paperback copy, visit writingourlegacy.org.uk.

Local Volunteering...

A volunteer at local charity Time to Talk Befriending tells us about her experience...
Befriending Charlotte
“Before I met you I didn’t use to care if I lived or died. Now I want to live forever!” (Charlotte, Time to Talk Befriending Scheme member aged 89 years) Whenever I’m asked what it’s like to be part of Time to Talk Befriending, I always want to get across that it is hugely rewarding to be “part of the solution to loneliness and making an impact on someone’s life”. However, personally I don’t feel like I’m giving up anything to spend time with Charlotte, who I have been visiting for three years now, or that it’s even a charitable thing!
The duality of the benefits to the be-friendship is just as important in my life as it is for Charlotte. There is something underrated about simply making time to sit and have a face to face chat - no technology, no mutual gossip but a connection stripped back to basics of wanting to have a real and quality connection with another human being. I have a hunch that if we dug into why people volunteer for this scheme it would show that we (volunteers) are looking for company in just as

much the same way as the members are. Whilst it’s not necessarily loneliness in the conventional sense that is driving us to volunteer, with the increase of isolation in society - especially in the millennial generation (because of social media quite frankly) - I think the work Time to Talk Befriending do and their befriending model will become increasingly important in society in recognising the value of connection.
I can’t recommend befriending enough so if you have an hour to give once a week or once a fortnight please contact the team on 01273 737710 / volunteers@tttb. org.uk / www.tttb.org.uk/volunteers/ for further details. Harriet

Here are some lovely local gardens to visit...
Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail... There are 12 brand new gardens this year on the eighth Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail, which takes place over the weekend of 27th and 28th July. The annual event, organised by Geoff Stonebanks’ Driftwood Fundraising Group, raises money for the Macmillan Horizon Centre in Bristol Gate, which offers local support for people affected by cancer.
At least 22 gardens between Brighton & Hove and Seaford will be opening their gates. All the gardens will open between 11am and 5pm on Saturday 27th or Sunday 28th July, or both days, many serving home-made tea and cakes. Entry costs £3 per garden, or £8 for a day ticket. The Macmillan Horizon Centre itself will be open on both days as part of the trail, so that visitors can take a look at what their donations in previous years have helped to build. There is a very small garden area and an amazing living roof to be seen. Also open locally is 26 South Avenue (BN2 0BP). Having had a year off, Sarah and Martin have decided to open their garden again this year. Sarah
says, "Please come and visit in summer and see the different spaces where we have planted mixed grasses and perennials, roses, coastal plants, a willow arch and vegetables - the outcome of various garden courses that I have attended! There are lots of places to sit and enjoy a cup of tea and cake made from garden produce." There is plenty of on-street pay parking by the garden. (Open both days.) The trail website – www.macmillangardentrail. co.uk – has details of all the gardens on the trail, or you can get more information from Geoff Stonebanks on 01323 899296.
