Carols in the Park
The Friends of Queens Park are hosting Carols In The Park on Friday 7 December, from 5.30pm, at the Royal Spa Nursery at the bottom of the park. This is a chance for all the family to join with local residents and the Salvation Army band to sing all your favourite Christmas carols. Singing starts at 6pm. “The switch to the Royal Spa last year was a huge success, with a large crowd of Queens Park locals enjoying a festive evening of communal carol singing,” says FQP chair Johnny Webb.
“It’s such a beautiful venue, especially when it’s lit up at night. We’re looking forward to returning there this Christmas, remembering this time to make enough mulled wine for our thirsty singers!
“We’ve made a few adjustments. Please note the slightly earlier start time, which we think is better for families.” Please bring a torch or lantern, and remember that dogs are not allowed in the grounds of the Royal Spa Nursery.

News from the Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust...
Health hub plan for Brighton General Hospital site
Plans for a brand new, purpose-built community health hub on the site of Brighton General Hospital have moved a step closer following approval by local NHS leaders. The Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust (SCFT) Board has agreed to move forward with plans to create a new health hub which would be constructed fronting Elm Grove, with much of the rest of the site released for local housing. Under the plan all of the Trust’s clinical and back office teams currently based at the site will be at the hub, unless patients or the services provided by SCFT would benefit from a future move. It could also see primary care and pharmacy services brought in. Siobhan Melia, Chief Executive of SCFT, said: “This ambitious plan is a once in a lifetime opportunity to ensure that the local NHS and community services in particular can meet the changing needs of local people. I want to thank the many hundreds of

patients, staff and members of the public that have been in touch with us to help shape this project.”
SCFT will now start detailed design work, with its plans still subject to the approval of clinical commissioners, the NHS regulator NHS Improvement, and Brighton and Hove City Council. The Trust, which provides NHS services in homes, schools, clinics and hospitals across Sussex, had previously set out five options for the development of the East Brighton site. SCFT engaged with patients, staff, local residents and community groups to gather views and to help ensure that its plans reflected local need. Brighton General Hospital was built in the 1860s as a Victorian workhouse, becoming an NHS hospital in 1948. Its wards fell below required standards and in 2009 the last inpatient beds were removed.
The redevelopment of the Brighton General site, only half of which is currently being used by the NHS, is essential to help fund the creation of a modern, purpose-built health and care facility.

There are two concerts at St Luke’s Church this month…
Hanover Queens WI Music and Wine Season’s Greetings from the Hanover Queens. It’s at St Luke’s our Xmas party night on Thursday 13th December upstairs at the Islingword Inn, 175 Queen’s Park Road, from 7.30 to 9.30pm.
There’ll be wine, nibbles and a mince pie or two as well as plenty of fun and games. Do come along if you’d like to join us or email us first on wihanoverqueens@ gmail.com to find out more.
We are hosting two concerts this month, both on the same weekend.
Handy hint Rub centre of an oily nut, eg walnut, on furniture scratches. The oil of the nut should help them to appear less noticeable.
Recipe of the month - Marzipan
• Mix 8oz ground almonds with 8oz icing sugar. • Add a beaten egg, vanilla essence and lemon juice. • Mix to a paste and knead thoroughly. • Wrap, keep in fridge and use as desired (for your Xmas cake, marzipan fruits, fillings for dates etc).
The Brighton Youth Orchestra String Ensemble
On Friday 7th December we welcome string players from the inspiring Ensemble Reza with pianist Nancy Cooley. They will perform two masterpieces of French chamber music: Fauré’s romantic first piano quartet, with its melting, exquisite harmonies and abundant lyricism, and Ravel’s exquisite piano trio, alongside a movement from a Mahler piano quartet.
The following evening on Saturday 8th December we will hear the award-winning Brighton Youth Orchestra String Ensemble with outstanding young pianist Berniya Hamie playing music by Chopin, and from Baroque Britain to 20th century Greece. This will be a special concert, the proceeds of which will help young people, who could not otherwise afford it, to get into music or help them progress. Music & Wine at St Luke’s would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy Christmas and New Year.
The concerts take place at St Luke’s Church, Queen’s Park Road, BN2 9ZB, and start at 7.30pm.
Tickets £7 / £5 unwaged and low waged / under-16s free. Disabled access. Wine and refreshments served. For more information, please visit www.musicandwineatstlukes.com, or contact musicandwineatstlukes@gmail.com.

An appeal to help people in fuel poverty...
Brighton Lions Club...Project Wenceslas Brighton Lions Club is launching Project Wenceslas, a campaign to help combat fuel poverty in the city of Brighton and Hove. People who receive the annual Winter Fuel Payment and feel they do not need it are invited to donate the amount to Brighton Lions, who can assure that every penny will go towards alleviating fuel poverty. Fuel poverty has increased mainly due to rising energy prices and more people die from cold housing than die on the roads each year. The main causes of excess winter deaths are heart attacks and strokes caused by increased blood pressure from living in a cold home, as well as respiratory and breathing infections. The cold can lower the immune system's resistance to respiratory infections.
Mental health is also affected. Some people become cut off from friends and family because they don't want to invite them into a cold house. Cold housing can also make it difficult for children to study or do homework, therefore affecting their education, work opportunities and long-term health.
Donations can be made by credit/debit cards through Brighton Lions Club’s website at www.brightonlions.org.uk or cheques payable to Brighton Lions Club should be sent to the club at Lions Dene, The Deneway, Brighton, BN1 5AZ. People sending cheques are asked to confirm that their donations may be treated as Gift Aid so that the value of the donation can be increased by 25%.

You can read reviews of advertisers with the Trusted and Local logo on their adverts at
www.trustedandlocal.co.uk Our little one has been at Orchard day nursery since February an settled in brilliantly. He was originally in the baby room but has moved to the bigger toddler room recently. From the first initial meeting and show around the nursery we got a lovely feel for the place and all the staff are wonderful with the kids and so friendly and happy. The nursery organised settle sessions initially and then gradually built up the amount of time he was there over a couple of weeks. They frequently take them out to the park and also on local trips to the beach or the farm. Can’t recommend them enough. Just make sure you get in early as they often have a waiting list! Liam did a great job with the windows in our terraced house. All of them had broken sashes, damaged frames and rotting wood, and Liam's work was quick, high quality, and he was considerate of our son's asthma when it came to tidying. Top work. Review of Sashes & Sills by local resident

An annual event to usher in the coming year...
Burning the Clocks...
Burning the Clocks was created by Same Sky in 1994 as a way for the whole community to enjoy the festive season, regardless of faith or creed. Each year a new theme, related to the concept of time, is incorporated into the event to bring new and exciting elements. This year’s theme is “Remembrance”. If you would like to take part in the parade, lantern making kits are on sale at the Royal Pavilion shop, The Wood Store in Providence Place, HISBE in York Place, and the Book Nook in Hove. Burning the Clocks
relies on crowdfunding and the support of local businesses to make sure the event happens every year - you can donate at www.crowdfunder.co.uk/ burning-the-clocks-2018. For more information and a route map visit: www.samesky.co.uk. A chance to see what’s under the Royal Pavilion...
Royal Pavilion Basement and Tunnel Tours Tours of the Royal Pavilion basement and tunnel are running on 3rd, 10th and 17th December (10.3011.45am), when you will be able to get a behindthe-scenes glimpse of the basement and tunnel of the Royal Pavilion and discover more about life below stairs for the servants, from the rat catcher to George’s principal private secretary. The tours end with a visit to the tunnel which led to George IV’s royal stables and riding school (now Brighton Dome).
Please note: due to the service areas covered in this tour it may be subject to last minute cancellations and alterations. See local reviews of this business at

Burning the Clocks is back on Friday 21st December at 6.30pm. Held on the shortest day of the year, Burning the Clocks sees around 2,000 local residents parading the paper and willow lanterns they’ve made through the city, before passing them into a huge bonfire on the beach. The lanterns are filled symbolically with their hopes and dreams. The coming year is then ushered in with a dazzling fire show. The parade begins at 6.30pm and the fire show begins on the beach by Madeira Drive at approximately 7.15pm.

Local group... The Brighton City Singers are looking for new voices...
Your local choir needs you! Brighton City Singers is a fun, sociable choir with absolutely no pressure. When you arrive for your taster session the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. There are no scary auditions or sight reading, you just sit down and join in. The first session is free, so you can make up your mind if you’d like to join. You don’t need a good voice or any experience. If you like to sing just for the fun of it, you will fit in perfectly.
We sing every type of music from Motown to Mozart, led by the feisty, funny MJ. MJ Paranzino is a dynamic personality, an ex-performer with a big voice, who spurs us on to sing like we never dreamed we could. She is particularly good at getting the most out of the male singers, who might start off rather quiet and unsure, then end up sounding strong and confident.

memorable moments have been singing beautiful Christmas music in the Atrium at the V&A, rocking gospel songs at the Curious Arts Festival and joining a children’s choir in West London at a charity concert to support Grenfell Tower residents. There are local concerts too, including a lovely carol service every Christmas at St John’s Church in Hove. All events are optional.
The wonderful thing about this choir is not only that it sounds beautiful by itself; there are three other choirs in the group - South London Choir, West London Choir and the Hastings Town singers. This means when there is a big concert all four choirs come together and sound massive! The Brighton City Singers take part in many performances over the year; some of my most
The social aspect of Brighton City Singers is one of the best things about it. Many people go to the pub after rehearsal, and we have a ‘Choir Party Extravaganza’ every February. Even if I have no time for more than a quick hello to my neighbours during rehearsal I have a comforting feeling of belonging. The singing is really stress-busting after a hard day at work, and it always lifts my spirits. At £25 per month it is a really feel-good affordable activity. Why not give it a try? It’s true, you really can sing yourself happy! Annie Watkins
Brighton City Singers meet on Wednesday nights, 7-9pm, at Brunswick Primary School, Somerhill Road, Hove. www.brightoncitysingers.co.uk
