Welcome to Poets Pages... It’s time for most people to go back to work or school (although there are some of us who haven’t been away!) There’s plenty going on in September if you do have some free time, though. There are two weekends of Heritage Open Days, the start of the annual Older People’s Festival, the first ever LagoonFest and the Brighton & Hove Triathlon, so make the most of the last days of the mild weather. This month we have details of free PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) tests for men at Bishop Hannington Church – a great opportunity for men to get themselves checked out. You do need to book an appointment though. There’s also exciting news about the arrival of giant snails on our streets, including one in Stoneham Park. Happy reading! Local update...

The Friends of Stoneham Park Last month, during Brighton Pride, my five-year-old daughter pointed to the rainbow flags hanging in the shop windows on Portland Road and asked me what they were there for. “Equality,” was the answer I gave. I went on to say what equality, not an easy concept for an infant, meant. I said Pride celebrated treating everyone equally, treating everyone the same, no matter who they were. There I may have fallen into error, but I hope I might be forgiven in trying to translate such a tricky concept to a child of such tender years. Because treating people equally is not the same as treating people identically. In order to achieve equality, it is often necessary to treat people very differently so everyone’s needs can be fairly accommodated. Affirmative action, as it is called in America, is controversial for just such a reason. I suppose ‘inclusivity’ is a word often considered to be synonymous with the concept of equality: making everyone feel included. Pride celebrates equality and inclusivity so well. The people of this city are rightly proud of the reputation Brighton and Hove has as a tolerant and welcoming place. Our parks and open spaces in this great city have to be inclusive places, too. But are they as good at showing equality as they ought to be?

Are our parks accessible to wheelchair users, to the blind and partially sighted, to the elderly and infirm? Should a park not be equally inclusive of very young children as well as teenagers? How does one balance the needs of boisterous kids and energetic new mothers with those practising the silent and contemplative art of t’ai chi, as I have often spotted by the pigs’ sculpture in Stoneham Park? How does the park succeed in balancing the needs of its visitors with the needs and sensitivities of residents facing its boundaries? The best way to balance these competing interests and thereby achieve inclusivity and equality is to ensure the voices of everyone are heard and those voices are afforded equal treatment. The Friends of Stoneham Park is the forum for your views. So, we invite you to join the Friends, to become a member, and come to our meetings.  Our constitution allows anyone aged 16 or over who lives in Brighton and Hove to join. There is no membership fee. You won’t get roped into doing any work (unless you want to), you won’t be ignored and you won’t be patronised. Yes, the meeting might be a bit boring (we hope not, but can’t make any guarantees) but meetings are supposed to be boring, it only lasts an hour and a half and you will easily recover.  So why not come to our next meeting at 7.30 on Monday, 17 September, in the garden of the George Payne pub? See you there. Richard Hearnden

Meet a local resident who helps parents prepare for bringing a new baby home...

Poets Person... Amanda Middlewick Amanda Middlewick runs antenatal classes at Holy Cross Church in Tamworth Road. How long have you lived in Poets Corner? I have lived in the Poets Corner area for over ten years and just love it! It’s a fantastic place to live with such a great sense of community. I feel really grateful that we can bring our three boys up in such a vibrant place. Tell us about the classes you run... I have run the BABIES (formerly known as Parentskool) classes for the last five years. It’s an antenatal course with a difference! We don’t talk about the birth but choose to focus on how to be prepared for when you bring your baby home.  We cover all the stuff you didn’t know you needed to know so that parents can feel as confident as possible. Having children is life changing and when I was pregnant with our twins my main concern was the pregnancy and the birth. I naively didn’t have a clue just how much our lives were about to change!  Having children is amazing but it can be hard work and a huge adjustment.  I love the BABIES course because

it covers a whole range of topics from breastfeeding, bottle feeding, what to buy and most importantly what you don’t need to buy, to where is good to go in the local area. It is a great place to get the lowdown on what is happening in your local area and a perfect place to meet other expectant parents. I wish the course had existed when I was pregnant with our twins. We now have three boys - twins aged seven and a three-yearold. I absolutely love running the BABIES course and meeting expectant parents at such a special time in their lives. What is your top tip for parents-to-be? Search out other people who are in the same boat as yourself; having people with children of the same age to share your experiences is often the best support.  You can read as many books as you like but my best support over the years has come from family or friends who have been there to help reassure and provide copious amounts of caffeine!   Where in the area do you like to go to relax? We’re so lucky to have such a wide range of different groups to go to in Poets Corner; some of my closest friends are those I first met at the local toddler group Jumping Beans (every Wednesday at Holy Cross Church).  I spend many an hour in our beloved Stoneham Park and just love the amazing food and coffee at The Snug café!  For more information, visit www.babies.uk.com.

Clark’s Bakery The late Alderman JJ Clark farmed Goldstone Farm from 1877 onwards. In 1887 he opened a small bakery on land between Goldstone House and the railway line. This view (date unknown) shows the bakery from what is now Fonthill Road, but was then a lane known as Upper Goldstone Road. Clark’s closed in 1976.

Look out for a snail in Stoneham Park...

Snailspace arrives on 15th September... The Snailspace art installation will be coming to the streets of Brighton & Hove from 15th September to 18th November. 50 giant snails, individually decorated by different artists, and over 50 junior snails painted by schoolchildren, will be located all over the city, sponsored by local businesses. #BeMoreSnail is the motto of Snailspace, which is being organised by Martlets Hospice and Wild in Art. The idea is to encourage people to slow down and enjoy the moment. It resonates with the hospice’s philosophy and, at the end of the event, the sculptures will be auctioned off to raise money for it. A map will be available on the Snailspace website, at Martlets shops and at Churchill Square, and there will also be an interactive app. Snails will be placed at some of the locations used for the Snowdogs and a few new locations have been added, including Stoneham Park and George Street – all will be revealed on 15th September!

For more information and to keep up to date with all details of the campaign, visit www.snailspacebrighton. co.uk or follow @snailspacebh on social media.

Father Jerry O’Brien of St Peter’s Catholic Church in Portland Road is to retire at the end of September, having celebrated his Golden Jubilee (50 years) as a priest in July. Father Jerry is likely to move to Hersham, a village in Surrey, where he will help out as a supply priest in different parts of the diocese. His last weekend at St Peter’s will be 22nd/23rd September. He will be replaced by Father Alexander Lucie-Smith, who has been parish priest at St Hugh of Lincoln church in Knaphill near Woking for the past five years. Father Lucie-Smith was born in Rustington, West Sussex, but lived in Malta for a while as a child. He is a doctor of moral theology, has written several books and has also been a long-standing contributor to The Catholic Herald.

The first in a series of articles from local financial adviser David Lewis...

Why see a financial adviser? No one knows your needs, circumstances and preferences better than you. All the information you need to make a reasonably informed decision about investments, pensions or mortgages is on the internet so why do you need to talk to a Financial Adviser? Simply put, because it’s much easier for them to get to know you than it is for you to get to know the investment, pension and mortgage markets as thoroughly as they do. So Much Choice Having so many options for saving or borrowing makes them more accessible to everyone but it does means the variety of options is mind boggling. Most people know investments always carry a degree of risk but knowing how much is too much or how best to manage risk isn’t so simple. A good Financial Adviser can explain all this and give you a few straightforward choices based on their understanding of your needs. So Little Time Of course you could research all your mortgage, pension or investment options yourself and gain some

understanding of what is available, what the risks are and which would suit you but who has the time these days? The level of research required to make sure you understand the whole market and aren’t missing out on anything is phenomenal. Don’t do that to yourself. Let a Financial Adviser do all that for you. Good Financial Advisers ask all the right questions to get to know everything they need to know about you to recommend the best borrowing or saving options for you and your family. At David Lewis Wealth Management, we use our knowledge of the marketplace to find the most appropriate solution and make sure you fully understand the risks and your obligations. Call us for a no-obligation consultation on 01273 933743.

This article is by Poets Corner resident Tania Marsh, who is Deputy Manager at the National Cat Adoption Centre…

National Cat Adoption Centre The National Cat Adoption Centre in Chelwood Gate is set in 51 acres of outstanding natural beauty in the heart of the Ashdown Forest; it is the perfect place to take a break. You can visit our nature trail and rest a while by our lake. We have a herd of Hebridean sheep grazing on the land, and we also have three resident donkeys, Star, Holly and Twinkle, on site courtesy of our wonderful relationship with The Donkey Sanctuary. The NCAC, the largest cat adoption centre in the UK, is home to anything up to 500 cats and kittens, all looking for a loving new home. Whether you are looking for a tabby, tortie, a young kitten or an older cat, you can feel safe in the knowledge that these cats will have been given the best possible care. We have a cat for every home, whatever your space. All our cats, on adoption, have been vaccinated, microchipped, neutered, regularly de-flead and wormed, and had a full health check by our vet, and also come with four weeks’ free pet insurance, all for the adoption fee of £80.

Back to School...Time for a cat. We are heading to the autumn, the kids have returned to school, normal life and routine returns, now its time to get your new cat. The NCAC has hundreds of cats and kittens looking for a new home, they are all vaccinated, neutered, microchipped and even come with 4 weeks free insurance. Why not visit the NCAC,and talk to the experienced team about adopting a rescue cat, they will guide you through the process, and help you to choose the right cat for you and your family.

Update from your Local Action Team...

News from the West Hove Forum Healthy Neighbourhood Fund Grants The West Hove Forum now has £3,000 to spend from the Healthy Neighbourhood Fund. Small, not-for-profit community groups in West Hove can bid for up to £500 to spend on a project with a clear health outcome – please email us at westhoveforum@gmail.com if you’d like an application form (or phone 07809 830029). The deadline for completed applications is 30th September. Travellers on Hove Lawns At our last meeting at the end of July, our local PCSOs were questioned about the issue of unauthorised encampments on the Western Lawns, next to the King Alfred Leisure Centre car park. Posts at the edge of the lawn had been removed; however there was no evidence against a specific person and trespass is now only a civil offence. PCSO Jodie Sullivan told the meeting that the police are working with the council’s Traveller Liaison Team

to address the problem. Since our meeting, some blocks have been put in place on the edge of this lawn, including very large pieces of tree and concrete cubes, which should restrict access by caravans and other vehicles. Hove Junior School Swimming Pool The future of the swimming pool at Hove Junior School is uncertain. Five years ago £27,000 was raised to maintain it. West Hove Infant School are no longer using the pool and the junior school now have a dilemma over whether to try to keep it going – swimming is part of the curriculum that junior schools have to follow. Pavement Parking on Portland Road A Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) banning pavement parking in part of Portland Road (from Wish Park Surgery to St Peter’s Church) was introduced on 23rd July. It has already produced its first booking, so Wish ward councillors Garry Peltzer Dunn and Robert Nemeth believe it has been a success. They have asked for a report on enforcement. Other Forum members commented that the situation had greatly improved since its introduction. West Hove Forum meetings are attended by ward councillors and a wide range of community representatives. The next meeting will be at 7pm on Wednesday 26th September, venue to be confirmed. If you would like to attend on behalf of a group or business, please email westhoveforum@gmail.com.

Local news...

Stoneham Road Flats... Brighton & Hove City Council’s Planning Committee refused permission at its meeting on 15th August to build an extra floor above the Spirit block of flats in Stoneham Road. Spirit is a modern three-storey block of seven flats, completed in 2013, next to the former Maynards sweet factory, which is a listed building. The developers said that the proposal would be sympathetic to the character of the area whilst providing an additional high quality dwelling. The extra floor would have formed a twobedroom flat with a terrace. Council officers had recommended approval, but many neighbours were unhappy with the proposals, saying that the introduction of a further storey would be out of keeping with the predominantly residential and domestic scale of the local street scene. Some local residents also commented that there was already a shortage of parking in the area. Wish ward councillor Robert Nemeth spoke against the application. He argued that the extra floor would have done great damage to the setting of the historic sweet factory. Councillors voted nine to one against the application.
