Meet a local artist who’s designed one of the Snailspace snails...

Poets Person... Jo Moore Illustrator Jo Moore lives in Poets Corner and has created Leaf Snail Hunt, one of the snails on the Martlets Snailspace trail. How did you get the inspiration for your design? I wanted people to pause and engage with my snail rather than just walk by, so I created a game. The idea is to count how many snails are hiding among the undergrowth. It’s aimed at children of all ages! Only I know the exact number of snails there are. I have fond memories of hunting for snails in the garden when I was small and I wanted to capture that fun. Which is your favourite of the other snails? Now you can’t possibly expect me to answer that? All I will say is that the standard this year is incredibly high. I was painting my snail at the communal warehouse and it was a privilege and joy to see the other creations being revealed over the summer. A lot of very talented and dedicated artists have produced some fabulous designs. Everyone is in for a treat! What do you do when you’re not painting snails? How long have you lived in Poets Corner? I moved here in the spring of 2012 after living in central Brighton for over 20 years. That summer there was a wonderful Jubilee/Olympics street party in my road. It was a perfect way to meet the neighbours and made me feel very welcome and part of a great community. Where can we see your snail? My snail is on Hove promenade; she’ll have a lovely view for the duration of the trail! She’s no. 7 on the Martlets route map. My sponsors, Yeomans Nissan, have also wrapped a car with my design so you may even see the Leaf car driving around the city promoting the Martlets Snailspace.

I have been a practising illustrator for almost 30 years in which time I have illustrated in excess of 250 books and magazines. I’ve worked primarily in children’s non-fiction publishing, illustrating dinosaurs, atlases, sticker books, science projects, colouring pages and poetry. Since 2012 my work has featured in the BBC children’s television programme The Dumping Ground. I was thrilled to be chosen for the Snailspace as I really wanted to do something completely different that would open up new possibilities, while raising money for the Martlets Hospice. It’s been challenging, but enormous fun. Who knows, I might even do it again. For more information, visit: www.snailspacebrighton.co.uk.

Update from the Friends of Stoneham Park...

Autumn in Stoneham Park October is the first full month of autumn, beginning traditionally with the equinox on 23 September. From that date, when day and night are each 12 hours long, the advance towards the winter solstice begins and summer recedes from view. Rare wildlife spotted in Stoneham Park

Memories of the Summer of ’18 will last a long time. Record-breaking temperatures were notched up with no rain at all for over a month between June and July. While many of us swapped Stoneham Park for the beach, the small area of grass we enjoy in this part of Poets’ Corner turned from green to yellowish-brown. The sweltering temperatures provided a challenge for some of the splendid trees, flowers and shrubs we planted in the spring. By Tamworth Road we planted a sapling and some shrubs in the little fenced garden and, of course, we created the new raised flower bed by the café. You probably already knew this, not least because I wrote about it in May’s issue of Poets’ Pages. But you might not have known that, throughout the heatwave, members of the Friends carried watering can after watering can into the park to keep the new plants going.

The City Council does not do this: it is volunteers living in the community. Likewise, it was the Friends who re-painted the benches in the infants’ park. Appropriately, the seating was painted by our chairman, local actor David Jarvis, to whom we are all incredibly grateful. Where else can you sit down whilst also wondering to yourself, ‘Is this bench red or brown?’ or ‘Would you say this is a lime green or an apple green colour scheme?’ These things are all done to keep you happy. David (Peter Pumpkinhead, The Haunted School House) is going to treat us to another Halloween mini-show at the end of the month, consisting of ghost stories and visuals. Please keep an eye out in the park’s noticeboard, our Facebook page and on the gates, for more information. Our final show of the year will be our Christmas Market on Saturday, 1 December. Santa Claus will be visiting us, as will folk selling the usual selection of street food, stocking fillers, mulled wine and tasty cakes. If you would like to help us help the park, please get in touch. Email friends.of.stoneham.park@gmail.com, find us on Facebook or come and speak to the next person you see doing something to brighten up the park - it’s probably one of us! Richard Hearnden

Events for all ages...

Brighton Science Festival The Brighton Science Festival is back this October. For young folks (age 7-14) and parents, Hand-On HalfTerm is back in various places around Brighton (October 20-26). The concept is simple: you look out for people who would like to show young people extraordinary things and help them do extraordinary things, then you let people know about it. The result is an avalanche of humanity romping through the nooks and crannies of Brighton, having a whale of a time and learning new skills, from sewing to computer programming, to space flight to Einstein. For adults, The Big Monstrous Day (Sunday October 28) will be dealing with monstrous subjects in this anniversary year of Frankenstein - 200 years old in November, and still not quite dead. In modern times we are seeing the ascendance of Frankensteinianism: we can modify the genomes of our beloveds (puppies at the moment, children soon); we can use surgery and medicine to extend our lives by decades (nobody need

die!); we regularly donate our body parts to others; we have robots replacing us in the workplace; we are being watched, judged and manipulated by social media and internet monsters. We will hear all about these. More than that, we will be encouraged to debate the issues, partly because it’s a good idea, partly as a demonstration of our freedom to speak and think for ourselves. Big Science Saturday (Saturday October 27) has speakers on six different and fascinating topics including: Brian Clegg - The Graphene Revolution

Graphene is far stronger than steel and a far better conductor than any metal. Components made from it are a fraction of the size of silicon chips and can be both flexible and transparent. The possibilities are limitless. Brian tells of the dreams, the discovery, the hectic research being carried out and the magical future of graphene. Andrew Elliott - Is That A Big Number? Impressive statistics are thrown at us every day - the cost of health care; the scale of an earthquake; the distance to the nearest star; how many atoms in a full stop. How can we hope to grasp what they mean? Andrew Elliott is at hand to help. Giving us the tools and tips to tame the numerous beasts, he will take the Tera out of the Nano for us. This article is by local financial adviser David Lewis...

Banking and Mortgages Because we all have bank accounts, we see our banks as the go-to places when thinking about money. Banks are often our first port of call whether we want to borrow or save money and, even though this is a totally logical first step to make, it isn’t actually the best idea. Limited Choice The problem with asking your bank for advice on the right mortgage or cash management solution is that their advice is always limited to their products. It’s like going to a car dealership and asking which family saloon car is best for your needs and budget. They’re going to tell you it’s a model they have on their forecourt rather than searching the whole car market for you. Similarly, a high street bank is only going to offer you their mortgages or cash management solution even if you might be better off with a different option. Limited Knowledge It follows, therefore, that high street bank Financial Advisors are only trained to sell their bank’s products so their knowledge is limited. Financial Advisors who

don’t work for individual banks have to learn about the whole market place of mortgages, savings and cash management solutions so they can give impartial advice based on your circumstances and needs rather than on their limited range of offerings. If you’re looking to get a mortgage or to find the best cash management solution for your requirements, it’s always worth speaking to Financial Advisors like David Lewis Wealth Management as we don’t work for a single bank so can offer you the best solution available rather than just one of a small selection. We get to know our clients so we can establish exactly what your situation is and what your goals are before we make a recommendation. Call us on 01273 933743 for a no-obligation consultation.

News from Portland Road-based charity Off The Fence...

Off The Fence Launch New Shower Van At the end of August, Off The Fence were proud to launch their third van – a mobile shower unit for their Hygiene For All project - complementing the Hygiene and Washing vans already active in Brighton and Hove and ensuring the homeless community always have access to their most basic need – hygiene. For many individuals without homes, having a shower will be a big first step towards improving self-worth and help the efforts involved in finding accommodation or supported housing.

Mayor Dee Simson launches the shower van with Cllr Denise Cobb and Off The Fence CEO Paul Young

The shower van will consist of two showers, providing up to 30 showers in a four-hour operation session. Showers will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis at each location around the city. Towels, bath mats and shower / body soap will be provided. The need for shower units for homeless individuals is huge as many find it very difficult to access free showers, often have a very limited time to do so, and can also, naturally, feel vulnerable. Full-service emergency homeless shelters and drop-in day centres are limited and often crowded. When searching for such facilities, individuals lose time during their day and often need transportation to and from the facilities. In the process, they suffer the indignity of travelling on

public transportation in an unclean state. The answer is to take the showers to the homeless. Without corporate sponsors and individual donors this project would not exist. The Off The Fence shower van is supported by: Sutton Winston, Southern Water, Brewers and Screwfix. For more details about Off The Fence go to www.offthefence.org.uk, or phone 01273 933885.

An extra crossing in Portland Road? We have been asked by a number of residents for a full crossing on Portland Road near to Rutland Gardens - so that there is easier access across Portland Road to Sainsbury’s and for parents crossing the road to reach West Hove School. There is an existing pedestrian refuge island here that allows residents to safely cross Portland Road in two halves. Improvements are being designed to make the distance even shorter and we suggest that the existing crossing, as well as any improvements, should appropriately serve the number of pedestrians wishing to cross at this point. The council has a programme of installing pedestrian crossings of various types, ranging from simple dropped kerbs, pedestrian islands, zebra controlled and sign controlled crossings. This programme is prioritised using agreed criteria. Please let us know what you think - ivan.lyons1@ virginmedia.com - and we will present to council. Ivan Lyons, Westbourne Conservative Team

This article is by Wish ward councillor Robert Nemeth...

School Parking... Cllr Garry Peltzer Dunn and I are absolutely delighted by the result of our campaign to ban pavement parking on Portland Road. It took ages to pull off, but was well worth the effort. The area outside Wish Park Surgery going east is now completely clear, just as it should be; especially given its location near a surgery, park, nursery and two schools. But this is the problem. Fixing one problem has shone a spotlight on another – the problem of very selfish parking at school drop-off and collection times. It’s only natural that these times should be hectic. A sudden rush of over 1,000 people at the two schools has the potential for chaos, but it need not be dangerous. Many parents have complained to Garry and me that a minority are putting kids in danger needlessly. We promised to take up the campaign after the summer once schools are back. Most schools locally have the same problem. It involves double-parking, parking on double-yellows or zig-zags, and other similar such behaviour. Being in a rush, or

simply being lazy, aren’t reasonable excuses for putting children at risk and making it even more difficult for school staff to manage an already testing situation. So many mums have expressed frustration and simply asked for help in confronting those behaving badly. It’s clearly tricky when those doing it are friends or acquaintances. Parents need a little support in that regard – probably from schools, council and police if necessary. Our first step is a meeting with the heads of West Hove Infants and Hove Juniors which will have taken place before publication. I’d be surprised if the schools weren’t fully with us on this. The next step will be forming a group and getting some ideas together. We’ll then push for wider support and get on and solve it. I’ll report back on progress in due course. On a related point about difficulties for pedestrians, pavements being obstructed is a large and entirely unnecessary problem in our area. The Council and residents must take equal blame though. It is certainly true that the Administration has no plan whatsoever when it comes to informing residents that bins shouldn’t be left out other than for collection, and wheelie bins are clearly unsuitable for Poets’ Corner generally, but we are where we are. Keeping the pavements clear makes walking so much more of a pleasurable experience. Cllr Robert Nemeth

This article is from a new local charity helping homeless people...

Knight Support A year ago, after drinking many bottles of wine and taking an overdose, Lynne Knight proceeded to jump off the end of Brighton Palace Pier, having a complete mental breakdown from being evicted from her home and facing being sent to a bedsit in Eastbourne with her four daughters, two of them in their GCSE years. Even with loving parents’ financial support she was unable to privately rent. After being sectioned in hospital and too ill to look after her girls, she had to live apart from them for almost six months which was the hardest six months of her life. Now, a year later, they are back together and have a roof over their heads and, from all their heartache, Knight Support has been born and Lynne has managed to use their problems to help others. One year later, she is here to see her beautiful girls grow and, no matter what, she will never be without them ever again. We have started the process to set up Knight Support as a registered charity using our heartache to bring kindness, laughter, hope and warmth to others in need.

The community project has run on community spirit with no funding or money donations! If anyone out there is suffering, please seek the help you need or message Lynne@knightsupport.co.uk. Lynne is always happy to chat to anyone in need; she would also like to hear from anyone who wishes to volunteer for the project! The Stoneham pub have been amazing, offering their help acting as a centre for clothes and other essential items to be donated between 3pm-5pm daily. With the winter months looming, we really need help with donations of warm clothes, shoes, sleeping bags, coats and waterproof clothes. Knight Support work in collaboration with other services in Brighton & Hove and supply donations to Antifreeze (Off the Fence) and First Base. Knight Support also run an outreach evening at two soup kitchens in Brighton on a Wednesday, giving out donations, hugs, kindness and love to lovely people just going through a difficult period in their lives. Please view www.offthefence.org.uk and feel free to view their Amazon wish list for their urgent needs! Knight Support would like to thank everyone for their truly amazing community spirit and ongoing support. Together we are stronger and we can’t explain what a difference everyone has made to other people’s lives. Local news...

Moda redevelopment proposals for Sackville Estate Moda, a developer specialising in creating homes for rent across England and Scotland, revealed £220m plans to redevelop and regenerate the former retail park and coal yard on Sackville Road at a public exhibition held at the Honeycroft on 18th and 19th September. Drawing from the adopted City Plan and the emerging Hove Station Local Neighbourhood Plan, the proposals aim to transform the brownfield site, by creating 600 much-needed new rental homes as well as 43,000 sq ft of commercial space. A partnership with Mayfield, an owner and operator of care communities, will see an additional 250 homes delivered for the elderly. Under draft designs, Moda aims to create a highly connected walkable garden community with homes wrapped into large areas of landscaped green space and public realm. The development will also include new recreation and employment opportunities, helping to meet the aspiration of the city council and local neighbourhood forum to create a vibrant and integrated community in this part of Hove. Mayfield’s provision accommodates an ever-growing need for specialist high quality residential provision as the UK population lives longer. Moda and Mayfield will both build and manage the development, working to create a community that promotes long-term, healthy, diverse and sociable living environments. As with all Moda developments, there will be a range of on-site amenities with substantial areas of shared space provided, including communal lounges, virtual sports simulators, BBQ roof terraces, and bicycle rental. Residents will have access to a car club, semi-private gardens and allotments as well as Premier League nutritionists and coaches following a tie-up with Hero, a digital wellness platform launched by the former UK managing director of WeWork. Moda is a family-run, award-winning build-to-rent developer and operator with over 7,000 new homes being built in major UK cities. They currently have schemes underway in Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester. This is the company’s first scheme in Brighton & Hove. A planning application is expected to be submitted to Brighton & Hove City Council later this year. The project contact email is: sackville@naturalpr.biz
