Welcome to Poets Pages! Goodness, November already and the year is flying by! So what has November to offer apart from dropping temperatures and shorter days? Well there is Bonfire Night on the 5th which can be a nice evening out with the family ( but not the dog!). On Sunday 13th we have Remembrance Sunday and if you have any Scottish connection of any kind use St. Andrew’s Day on the 30th as the perfect excuse to have a wee glass of whiskey and to dance a reel! Have a great November! Poets Pages Team 01273 551021 info@poetspages.co.uk www.poetspages.co.uk Cover shot: Josh Theed

Meet another talented local resident... Photo by Simon Duggal

Local Author – Sharon Duggal Sharon Duggal lives in Poynter Road and her first novel, The Handsworth Times, is published by Bluemoosebooks.com. How long have you lived in Poynter Road? Nine years, although I can’t believe it’s that long. I moved to Hove with my partner and three kids in 2006 and we lived in Tamworth Road for a short while before moving to Artists Corner. What do you like about the area? The people, the sea, Hove Park, the local pubs and much more besides. I also love the vibrant arts community here and am well immersed in it; as well as being a writer, I work for dance charity South East Dance by day, and I present a weekly show on Radio Reverb with one of my teenage twin sons. It’s called The Ruben and Sharon Show and apparently we are the UK’s only radio show with a mum and son presenter team – we basically play music and disagree about our choices live on air. It’s great fun and probably would only happen in a city like this.

What is your book about? The story is set in 1981 in Birmingham against the backdrop of political and cultural turbulence. The Agarwal family are dealing with a massive personal tragedy whilst around them factories are closing, unemployment is high, the National Front are marching and the neglected inner cities are ablaze with riots. Each character tries to come to terms with what is happening both within the family and externally in wider society. Pop music, protest, unexpected friendships and a community that refuses to disappear all have an impact on their journeys. On the blurb it says it ‘is a story of loss and transition, and pulling together because ultimately, there is such a thing as society’ and that sums it up nicely. How did you come up with the idea? I wanted to write about the sorts of people I grew up around – immigrants, working class communities, strong women – but rarely come across in the books I read. I wanted to show that even within one family each member can have a different response to an experience, resulting in a different journey and a different story. Have you got any more books planned? Yes definitely – I have lots of ideas and plan to start the next one after Christmas. Watch this space, as they say, or follow me @MsSDuggal. “The Handsworth Times” by Sharon Duggal is available from Amazon and other bookshops online and on the high street.

Sell some stuff and make space in your house...

Hove Luncheon Club’s Table Top Sale

The Bell of St Barnabas

Please come and feast on Hove Luncheon Club’s TABLE TOP SALE, to be held on December 3rd, from 10am till 3pm, in Hove Methodist Church Hall. Come and sell your items and enjoy the day. There will be a children’s workshop so you can leave your children to play in safe hands whilst you have a browse round the stalls; on offer will be a tombola, face painting and more. If you get peckish our lovely volunteers will be selling bacon butties, hot dogs, cakes, teas, coffees and soft drinks. Come and support the church’s chosen charity, “Night Stop”, which provides accommodation for homeless kids. To book a table for £10 call Jacqui on 07762 201687. 3rd December 2016 10am to 3pm

The bell of St Barnabas Has a dignified tone Solemn and clear With a trill of its own. Not too hurried Measured and sweet Calling in its flock Like Little Bo Beep. The bell of St Barnabas Has, since summers’ dawn, Brought in farm hands From nearby fields of corn. Now the few hasten To heed their faith From front room and hall To be prompt not late. Ere low mass Three and thirty pulses Remind us of a life brief For the bell of St Barnabas Will continue to call Beyond our limited time. Constant, available to all, The beacon of one’s belief. How many Snowdogs have you seen?

One More Month for the Snowdogs The Snowdogs by the Sea public art trail, inspired by The Snowman and The Snowdog film based on the book by Raymond Briggs, has now been in the city for a month. The trail of 44 Snowdogs will raise money for the Martlets Hospice and the Snowdogs will still be around until 27th November. Max, the Snowdog at Hove Museum, was designed by Sarah Arnett and sponsored by Joan and Jerry Cooper. At Hove Park you can see Marty, designed by David Halliwell and sponsored by the Martlets. Poets Corner business Lawrence Art Supplies have sponsored and designed Splash Hound, located outside Brighton Unitarian Church in New Road. You can buy a wide range of Snowdogs merchandise from figurines to pens at some of the Martlets shops, or from a pop-up stall in Churchill Square Shopping Centre. At the end of the event each Snowdog will be auctioned to raise funds for the hospice. The auction takes place at Sussex County Cricket Ground on 6th December. To prebid or register your interest for the auction, visit www.snowdogsbythesea.co.uk .

Splash Hound, designed by Lawrence Art Supplies; photo by Vervate

Before the auction, all the Snowdogs will be brought together for a festive farewell at Brighton Corn Exchange on Sunday 4th December and Monday 5th December. Tickets will be on sale from www.snowdogsbythesea.co.uk or via Brighton Corn Exchange www.brightondome.org. Tickets are £5 per adult and £3 per child; under-twos are free. Booking fees may apply.
