News from the Friends of Stoneham Park...
A busy year in Stoneham Park There was a lot of activity in 2018 by a small dedicated number of FoSP volunteers to improve and maintain Stoneham Park, put on events for everyone to enjoy and raise vital funds. We really hope that as a regular user of the park you have noticed the impact and changes. We were proud to have retained our Green Flag Award again and built a strong relationship with Cityparks. What improvements would you have seen in 2018? Greening up the park • Spring bulb planting (Nov) – c600 bulbs of native daffodils and crocus - great for emerging bees and pollinators as well as pretty colours for you to enjoy in 2019. • Bee-friendly planter added (Apr) - a joint collaboration with the Bee Friendly Trust to provide colourful pollinator-friendly plants in the park. • Wild life garden planting (Apr) - planted up a newly cleared area including a new Malus tree. Tidying up the park • The big Autumn Park Tidy (Sept) and Summer Park Tidy (June). A big thank you to everyone who came to help. • Assisted local group, 6th Hove Beavers, with advice and equipment for litter picking session (Sept). • Helped reunite many items of lost property throughout the year. • Reporting fly tipping to Cityclean. • Asking local artist Fek to paint the wall murals following graffiti. These designs are now regularly updated with different images and graffiti removed. Fixing the park - Reported/requested through Cityparks • Repair of the stepping stone balance play equipment. • Playground benches repainted in bright colours. • New No Smoking and No Dogs signage requested and installed. • Junior playground bucket swing reported and replaced. • Holes around roundabout reported and repaired. • Sandpit refilled with new sand in the toddler playground. Meet a local Pilates instructor...
Poets Person...Claire Lee Claire Lee teaches Pilates at Masons Yard in Westbourne Street. Do you live in Poets Corner? My family and I have just recently moved out of the area but yes, I lived in Poets Corner for over 17 years. I’ve seen Poets Corner and the surrounding area change so much over that time and now we have great local independent shops, cafés, gastro pubs and facilities for young families. The area creates a great lifestyle and community for all. How did you become a Pilates instructor? When I first moved to Poets Corner, it was due to its convenient location to Hove and Aldrington Railway Stations. I commuted to London on a daily basis. I first found Pilates classes at a local gym and was hooked straight away! I then looked into Pilates studios in Hove; there was only one at that time. This style of exercise made sense to me; I was stiff and inflexible. In 2003 I took voluntary redundancy and embarked on my training to become a Pilates teacher. In 2004 I started teaching classes in local church halls. I am now happily based in my own studio, at Masons Yard on Westbourne Street, where I teach all my mat based classes and equipment sessions for both group and private clients. What is Pilates? Pilates is a low impact method of exercise, concentrating on increasing strength and flexibility. It is a mind and body workout where we are predominantly interested in strengthening the core muscles that help us to maintain a balanced body and good posture. Breathing and concentration is all part of the method and post workout you should feel relaxed and connected. Joseph Pilates developed the method in the 1920s. He was a great inventor and designed all the apparatus that you will see in the studio today.
Is it suitable for anyone? Yes, Pilates is suitable for all, from children up to adults of all ages. It ranges from helping people to rehabilitate from injury or illness to assisting athletes to reach their full potential. If you have a medical condition or recent injury then it is always advisable to get permission from your GP before exercising. What do you like to do when you’re not working? We own a campervan and love getting away and enjoying the simple things in life, both in this country and abroad. Our Golden Doodle, who is a new addition to the family, keeps us fit with daily walks on the beach and local parks. For more information, visit www.hovepilates.com, email claire@hovepilates.com or phone 07973 719363.

Local history from West Hove resident Rachel Bridgeman...
Roll up! Roll up! From the 1860s until the Great War, children from Poets Corner would be transported to a magic world by the thrill of a special spectacle. Engines, pulling up to 70 trucks, would puff into the station, and down would descend a pageant of jaw-dropping proportions – a troupe of up to 1,200 circus folk together with a menagerie of wild and wonderful beasts. Children would flock down to watch the big top being pitched in fields just a few minutes’ walk away. By midday, the whole troupe would be dressed and ready for the magnificent procession around the town. And what a parade! The Ring Master would lead a cavalcade of dazzling and dangerous acts from across the globe – dozens of tumbling clowns; exquisitely gilded vans drawn by teams of horses; cages of lions, tigers, leopards, panthers and bears; caravans of camels; chariots drawn by zebras; a troupe of 20 performing elephants; Cinderella’s coach; Wild West floats; acrobats, contortionists and jugglers. Meanwhile, the school authorities grumbled about the empty desks as the classroom proved unable to compete with the dazzling display; some schools,

resigned to the inevitable, just permitted the children a holiday whenever the circus rolled up. Children desperately worked odd jobs to afford the ticket and recall memories of lying in bed wriggling in anticipation as they heard the “BOOM” of the man being shot out of the cannon. When Sanger’s Circus visited in 1915, it boasted the largest elephants in England. Within a year, these magnificent beasts would be ploughing the fields of Surrey to fill in for the farm horses which had been sent off to the Western Front. This article is by local financial adviser David Lewis...
Investment Planning Whether you want to invest money to help your loved ones later in their lives, for financial security, to minimise the tax liability for yourself or the inheritance tax liability on the estate you leave to your family or to take a regular income from your investments, it is important to plan your investments in a way that maximises your chances of achieving these goals. Firstly, you need to establish how much you would like to invest and what kind of time frame you would like to invest it over. When doing this, it is vital to take your lifestyle, employment status and family into consideration to avoid tying up money you might need urgently. Also consider how much risk you are willing to tolerate so you can devise an appropriate strategy. Pensions, ISAs and even some investment portfolios are fairly easy to set up yourself online with a bit of research but putting all the elements together to try to best suit your requirements and circumstances can be a time-consuming and complicated job. The marketplace is huge and finding out what is available and which schemes or investments would be the most appropriate to help you achieve your goals can be very difficult. This is why Financial Advisors spend so much time training and updating their knowledge to navigate this
very large market and ask the right questions so they can understand exactly what you want to achieve and what your circumstances are. It’s only when advisors such as David Lewis Wealth Management have all this information that we can make recommendations based on extensive product knowledge and research. For personalised investment advice to help you achieve your investment goals, call us on 01273 933743 for a no-obligation consultation.

TABLE TALK has been launched. The mission is to make Brighton even more friendly by offering opportunities to talk to new people. It’s for everyone, alone, with a friend, child or carer. We want people to TAKE TIME TO TALK.

Update from your Local Action Team...
News from the West Hove Forum Public Meeting on Seafront Strategy: In March this year, a new Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) is to be introduced on new building developments, to replace Section 106 Developer Contributions. 15% of this levy will be a neighbourhood portion and the designated neighbourhood forum will work with the council to decide how it should be spent. The West Hove Forum has therefore set up a West Hove Seafront Action Group of stakeholders to speak on behalf of the local community and to produce a framework to identify priorities for improvements to the West Hove seafront. The group comprises representatives of local community groups in the seafront area, such as the Friends of Hove Lagoon and the Hove Seafront Residents’ Association, as well as other stakeholders such as the bowling, tennis and croquet clubs, local businesses such as The Venue and local councillors. The group proposes to hold a public meeting on Wednesday 30th January at 7.15pm at The Venue Beach Bar (Western Esplanade, BN3 4FA) to present its proposals to local residents, club members and businesses.
Winter Opening Hours Monday Closed Tuesday - Friday 9.30 - 4.00 Saturday and Sunday 10.00 - 3.30 Wishing everyone a wonderful Christmas and a very happy, healthy 2019! Closed for Christmas 23 December 2018, reopening 3 January 2019
The council’s new Field Officer team
Healthy Neighbourhood Fund Grants: Grants from the 2018 fund have been awarded to: the Friends of Davis Park for a planting project; the Friends of Stoneham Park to set up a community gardening group; the Secret Garden Group to encourage more children into the garden; Stoneham Bakehouse to continue their Bread Shed baking group for older people; the Vallance Community Centre to continue their cookery group for isolated older people; and Say Aphasia to pay for an outing for members of their group, many of whom are isolated and have difficulty communicating following a stroke. Field Officers: The council has appointed a new team of Field Officers who act as trouble-shooters to deliver effective enforcement across a number of council services, including environmental health, housing, planning enforcement, community safety, seafront services and parks. They work between 12 noon and 8pm seven days a week, allowing them to visit residents at home to discuss complaints and identify quick solutions. One of the duties the team have taken over is a new weekend out-of-hours noise nuisance service – call 01273 293541 or email outofhoursnoise@brightonhove.gov.uk, from 5pm on a Friday through to 9am on Monday morning. The next West Hove Forum meeting will be at 7pm on Tuesday 29 January at Lawrence Art Studio, 14-16 Kingsthorpe Road. Our guest speaker will be Rachel Chasseaud, Assistant Director City Environment. Meet a couple who run a local funeral service...
Local Business... Sussex Funerals Sussex Funeral Services are owned and operated by husband and wife team Philip and Sallie Evans and have been on Portland Road since 2011. How did you become funeral directors? Philip began as a funeral director in 2010, after the death of his brother. That was the catalyst and, having spent previous years as a police officer and in other professional roles, he realised that he could use his skills to begin a new vocation. When Sallie joined him, her personality and experiences complemented Philip’s, so much so that we have since married and now operate the business as a successful husband and wife team. What are the benefits of using an independent funeral director? When you use any independent business, you are more likely to receive services that go above and beyond, with

professionals who are more likely to go that extra mile, to ensure that you receive the very best of services. And that is exactly what you’ll receive from us. That combined with the fact that we are the decision makers and can therefore do almost anything that a client wants, within reason and so long as it’s legal! How do you think funerals have changed over the years? Well firstly, to mention the cost of funerals, there is a lot of bad press recently, scaremongering about how funeral costs have risen dramatically; only yesterday a representative of the council suggested that funeral costs have tripled. That just isn’t true. It’s in their interest to scare the public into buying their funeral plans. Since 2011, our traditional funeral costs have risen by 20%, that’s almost 2% annual increase over the last 10 years, less than annual inflation rises. My strongest advice is to consider getting quotes from at least three funeral directors, which might include a Dignity branch, a Co-op branch and an independent. Secondly, over the last decade people’s attitudes to funerals have changed so much. The word ‘contemporary’ has hit the ground running big time, with more and more clients choosing to go down the road of something less traditional, something less black, so to speak. With an emphasis more on ‘celebrating the life of’, maybe including some colour, maybe taking the service away from the crematorium scene, and maybe even taking a leaf out of David Bowie’s book and not having a funeral service at all – but rather consider the less pricey option of a ‘direct cremation’ followed by a memorial service later on. How about a themed funeral? Here at

If cutting down on plastic use is one of your New Year resolutions, read on...
Plastic-free shopping at Harriet’s of Hove A new shop that’s completely free of plastic packaging has opened in Blatchington Road. Harriet’s of Hove is run by Harriet Dean-Orange and her partner Mhiran Patel. We asked them more about it. How did you come to start up the shop? We started up the shop after attempting ‘Plastic Free July’ earlier this year and finding it extremely difficult. We wanted to create somewhere that would facilitate people being able to shop plastic free, without travelling to Brighton, and that didn’t break the bank. What can we buy from you? At Harriet’s of Hove customers can buy dried pantry goods such as pasta, rice, lentils and chickpeas. There are also snacks such as a Bombay mix and chocolate buttons available. There is a wide selection of bathroom and kitchen cleaning products as refills. Customers are encouraged to bring their own jars, bags or bottles to pay for their products by weight. We also offer baking products, tea and coffee, herbs and spices, dried fruits, fresh vegetables, fresh bread,

oils and a wide selection of non-plastic items (such as wax wraps and None sponges) to remove the need for plastics in the home. How is it going so far? It has been an amazing journey and a big adventure for us so far. As a nurse and a dentist, we know how to work hard, but of course running a retail shop is a completely different skill set. We are really enjoying it and very much spurred on by the pressing need for the planet to be more sustainable and the amazingly kind words of our supporters and customers. What’s your most popular product? The most popular products have to be refills of pasta, chocolate buttons and washing up liquid. Our beautiful Chilly’s drinking bottles sell well too. They really are eyecatching! Do you plan any new productsin 2019? New products to stock for the new year include biodegradable glitter, plastic-free cat litter, nutritional yeast and reusable nappies. What a collection! Harriet’s of Hove is at 48 Blatchington Road.
