Meet a local resident who can bring you ice cream on his trike…

Poets Person…Daniel Reynolds Daniel Reynolds lives in Scott Road. He runs Ice Queens, who provide luxury ice cream for weddings and parties with an ice cream trike. How long have you lived in Poets Corner? I’ve been a Hove boy for quite some time, but moved to Scott Road when we got married. Where is your favourite local place to relax? I love living just off the Portland Road, so many great places have opened recently. I like to grab a coffee at the Flour Pot Bakery, stop by and mooch around Gunn’s Florist (a great new addition) and then head down to the beach with my dog Noodle. How did you get the idea for ice cream trikes? After having an ice cream van at our own wedding, it inspired me to buy a trike and set up my own business. I’m part time cabin crew so I love being able to offer the great customer service skills I’ve learned over the years. We’ve only been going for a year, but things have really taken off (no pun intended) and I love every minute of it.

Ice cream seems to bring so much joy to people! I love being able to add a touch of ‘First Class Service’ into the ice cream industry. Tell us more about your ice cream... With over 40 flavours to choose from, our ice cream and sorbets are of the highest quality and produced in the south east. Whenever we do an event, we also offer a varied and exciting toppings table too, where people can add to their own creation. What’s the most interesting assignment you’ve had? The majority of our work comes from weddings, which I love. It’s so exciting being part of someone’s special day. But now and again we get to do other functions. In the summer we attended a little boy’s naming ceremony in Ditchling which was so full of love and laughter, it was the cutest afternoon. We also attend the odd festival too. My favourite last year was the Brunswick Rural Festival and dog show where we even had doggy ice cream. Another highlight of 2019 was one of our #treattheteam jobs where we went to a well-known local call centre and surprised the sales team with an ice cream treat! A local update…

News from the Friends of Stoneham Park Winter-time is usually a sluggish period for the Friends of Stoneham Park. After the excitement of the Christmas Market, things quieten down for a couple of months. Having recuperated and thought up some exciting new ideas in torpid January, we will be raring to go with our next open meeting at the end of this month. I hope to see some new faces. We were lucky in finding helpers for our Christmas Market (some from outside Poets’ Corner - hint, hint!) who all had a great time on the day, be it barbecuing sausages, selling raffle tickets, serving hot drinks and so on. We really do want more people to get involved: after all, if you won’t, who will? Now, the last few days (or weeks if you are reading this ages after it plopped through your letterbox) has just seen the most consequential event of many of our lifetimes. Whatever you think of Brexit, the fact is that this nation is seriously divided. While this part of the world is, shall I say, more politically homogenous than others, even here in Hove a gulf has opened up between young and old, different social classes and so on. Many nationals of other countries feel alienated. Brighton & Hove City Council recently won plaudits for issuing a joint statement by all political leaders represented on the council. Reaffirming Brighton & Hove’s reputation as a free-thinking, open and welcoming place to live, they said, ‘We value the contributions of all our residents who have made their home here and contribute to our vibrant city life… Our vision is for a fairer city with a sustainable future and we believe that by working with our residents and

businesses to showcase the best of Brighton & Hove we can achieve this. The future is in all of our hands.’ I hope this ‘letter of unity’ sets the tone for some sort of reconciliation in the years ahead. So what better way to meet people and find common purpose with others in your neighbourhood than to get stuck in with one of our events in the park? We have our summer fair to plan for and I am still holding out a light for a pet show and an outdoor cinema - so who’s in? Our next meeting will be at 7.30pm on 26 February. Venue to be decided. Our email address is friendsofstonehampark@gmail.com. Richard Hearnden

Lee Smikle tells us about his new dance space in Hove...

New dance studio – Smikle Space Professional dancer Lee Smikle has recently opened Smikle Space on Third Avenue, Hove – a new dance studio with classes for children, young people and adults. What is your background? Originally from Yorkshire, I started dancing at the late age of 19. I didn’t even know that dance could be a potential career choice. A chance visit to my local theatre led me to get a part-time job there where I got to see live theatre, musicals and dance regularly. I saw acclaimed companies like Northern Ballet and Alvin Ailey. I signed up for ballet classes, and the rest is history.   I trained at the Rambert School of Ballet & Contemporary Dance and have performed in operas (Glyndebourne), pop videos (Kylie Minogue) and movies (Billy Elliot). My main performance work, however, was with Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures, touring internationally in shows like Swan Lake, The Car Man and Nutcracker. I later became a resident artist and producer of the New Adventures Choreographer Award (NACA). Teaching soon became my main passion, and I retired from performing in 2007. I was the lead dance teacher at the Laban Centre For Advanced Training (CAT) 2007-14. In January 2010, I founded Shoreditch Youth Dance Company (SYD) and later Smikle Project (2011). Why did you decide to set up a dance studio? It’s been a long-time ambition of mine to have my own studio space. I love teaching, so creating a home for the work I do with young dancers was the dream. I moved to Brighton & Hove in 2017 and launched SYD:B Creative Dance Academy in September 2018. SYD:B has established itself as the go-to creative hub for many local young dancers, ready to take their dance training to the next level. With SYD celebrating their tenth anniversary this year, it seemed like the perfect time to open Smikle Space.

Tell us about the studio and what sort of classes are available? There is a fully sprung dance floor with dance vinyl flooring, a kitchen, lounge area and a stunning photography infinity wall. We do classes and courses for children, young people and adults in: Creative Dance, Contemporary Dance, Ballet, Flow Fit, Boys Only, Intensives, workshops and private lessons. You can also hire out the space for rehearsals and events.  Current offers: ‘First Class Free’ and ‘25% off all courses’. Smikle Space is at 5 King’s Mews, Third Avenue, Hove BN3 2PA. For more information, visit www.smiklespace.com or email info@smiklespace.com.

Bloodline wills and care home fees… Can you avoid your house being sold to pay for care home fees? The answer is sometimes yes and sometimes no. If you are a couple (married or not), you can do a lot with your wills to help with this. Solutions for couples. The best solution for a couple who own their own home is to make sure they have the right sort of wills and own the house in the right way. There are two options: 1. Beneficial joint tenants (owners). 2. Tenants (owners) in common. How can Camrass Wills help? We can advise you what is best for your situation. We can tell you how you own your home – the Land Registry documents do not use either of the phrases, beneficial joint tenants or tenants in common! Lasting powers of attorney. These are often overlooked but they are a vital part of planning for later life. We offer a comprehensive service to help you set these up correctly. __________________________________________________________________________________________

Local news...

More details of plans for Sackville Trading Estate The latest redevelopment plans for the Sackville Trading Estate and Hove Goods Yard are now available to view on Brighton & Hove City Council’s website. Moda Living’s previous plans were rejected by the council’s planning committee in July. Their revised proposals for the site, to the east of Sackville Road and to the north of the railway line, include 564 residential units, 260 care community units, retail floorspace, office accommodation and community/leisure floorspace. The buildings will range from 2 to 15 storeys – the same as in the previous application – although councillors on the planning committee had concerns over the height and density of the previous scheme. The developers say their revised scheme incorporates a number of significant changes which respond to the reasons given for refusal of the earlier application. The changes include a reduction in the number of residential apartments and an increased amount of office floorspace. The number of “build to rent” homes has been reduced from 591 to 564. There is an amended housing mix with the number of studios reduced and an increased number of larger two- and three-bedroomed apartments. More of the build to rent homes will have private balconies and the extra care homes have been reconfigured to optimise daylighting levels. Many objections to the scheme have been registered on the council’s website, with concerns about the height and density of the scheme, overshadowing, traffic congestion and parking problems. One local resident commented: “The planned buildings are way too tall and will overshadow the whole area. The whole development has too high density. There is nowhere near enough parking

A view of the proposed development from Sackville Road

provided on site. The single entrance will cause traffic chaos in an area already blighted by too much traffic. Sackville Road is one of the only exit roads from Hove due to a lack of bridges under the railway and is already incredibly busy at peak times. The effect of the extra traffic on air pollution in the area will be very significant.” Another said: “Everyone in the area wants a development to take place in the proposed location and everyone understands that new residential property is necessary countrywide. But the new proposals must be balanced against what currently exists in the vicinity and the community that lives within.” The deadline for determination of the application is 11 March 2020. To see the full plans or to comment, go to planningapps.brighton-hove.gov.uk/online-applications and search for planning application BH2019/03548.

Ingredients 400g green cabbage finely sliced (reserve one whole leaf for later use) | 200g cauliflower broken into small pieces | 50g spring onion chopped | 50g grated carrot | 3 cloves garlic | 10g fresh/powdered turmeric | ½ teaspoon garam masala | 1 teaspoon mustard seeds | 20g unrefined salt (eg Himalayan Pink Salt). |150ml water | 1 litre jar Method In a bowl using clean hands massage the cabbage, squeezing it between your fingers until you notice the salt drawing the liquid from the cabbage. Next add the cauliflower, spring onion, carrot, and mustard seeds.

In a blender combine the water, remaining salt, garlic, turmeric, garam masala. Pack the jar tightly with the cabbage and other veg, pushing it firmly down. Slowly pour the blended liquid into the jar over the vegetables. Ensure that all veg is completely submerged. Take the cabbage leaf and place it on top of the veg and wedge it into the lip of the jar. This helps keep the cabbage fully submerged. Fit the lid loosely on top. Every few days push the kraut down ensuring everything stays submerged. It will be ready to eat after seven days, and lasts for weeks in the fridge! Come and learn more at a Fermented Foods Workshop. Book via Eventbrite. www.wildcultures.com / 07903 043771

Local history from Rachel Bridgeman...

Local History...Tickle-Belly Alley A recent study by the University of Cambridge revealed that regional dialects are dying out. This was brought home to me recently when faced with a row of blank teenage faces at the mention of a “twitten” - the old Sussex dialect word for a narrow passageway between two walls or hedges. This got me to pondering local nicknames, modern and olden, for places near and dear to us, such as Wish Park, Poets’ Corner, Artists’ Corner and Hove Actually. And a delightful local sobriquet in everyday usage throughout the history of Poets Corner until as late as the 1950s, and still in use today by the older generation of born and bred residents - Tickle-Belly Alley. That was the pet name bestowed by locals on the cattle creep at Aldrington Halt (Poets Corner’s Railway Station). Prior to the construction of the West Coast Line in the 1840s, West Hove was still largely an expanse of fields, allotments and brickfields crossed by ancient rights of way winding from the sea up to the Downs. The passage under the tracks (a feature so familiar to many a sleepy Poets Corner commuter and secondary school child today) was designed to preserve a welltrodden path which had been in use for centuries by local shepherds and farmers. A hundred years ago, on exiting the cattle creep, allotments greeted you on the right-hand side and the railway line to Devil’s Dyke on the left. In between, Tickle-Belly Alley continued up through the countryside to the Old Shoreham Road (along the route of Amherst Crescent today). As dusk fell, Tickle-Belly Alley was frequented by courting couples - during the Great War, witness to the final amorous farewells of young couples; in later decades, the scene of a “snog and fumble” en route back to Hangleton and Knoll after a flick at the Granada Cinema on Portland Road.

Brighton Dome & Festival want your stories...

Memories needed for heritage project Were you mesmerised by Pink Floyd’s first performance of Dark Side of the Moon? Did you sneak into David Bowie’s infamous 1973 Ziggy Stardust gig as a teenager? Have you got a special memory of taking part in Brighton Festival children’s parade? Or did you ever perform on the Brighton Dome stage? Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival are asking the public to record their memorable stories as part of a new heritage project, I Was There. The interviews and collection of memorabilia will be archived for future generations, and selected stories will be presented in an online exhibition and feature in a public programme of tours and talks at Brighton Dome.

Kate Richardson, Participatory Interpretation Manager at Brighton Dome, said: “We’d love to hear people’s unique recollections or from anyone who has a special connection to Brighton Dome and Brighton Festival – whether it was 50 years ago or more recently. We’re keen to speak to audience members recounting how they felt about seeing their favourite artist or witnessing a sporting event; performers and participants who took part in a show, as well as former employees who can tell us what it was like working behind the scenes.” Since being converted into a performance venue 150 years ago, Brighton Dome’s three stages have seen a dazzling array of illustrious artists and musical icons such as Patti Smith, Beyoncé, David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix, as well as hosting tea dances, wrestling matches and graduation ceremonies. And since 1967, Brighton Festival has brought thousands of international artists to the city. The National Lottery Heritage Fund is supporting the oral history project as part of their contribution towards the refurbishment of Brighton Dome’s Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre. Sussex-based community arts and heritage organisation, Strike a Light – Arts & Heritage, are delivering the project with the help of a team of volunteers who will be trained to collate audio interviews from participants.

Nicola Benge, Project Manager at Strike a Light, added: “Capturing individual experiences provides a valuable insight into the social history of the arts in Brighton & Hove. We’d like to record memories from a broad crosssection of communities and age groups to reflect how the arts and these historically important venues have had an impact on people’s lives.” Interested participants should email: strikealight@ rocketmail.com or visit Brighton Dome’s website for further information: https://brightondome.org/about/ history_heritage/

News from Wish ward councillor Robert Nemeth...

Councillor News I read last year that we need to plant 19 billion trees internationally – every year – to offset both current and future carbon emissions. So what are we doing locally? Brighton & Hove City Council no doubt has its own proposals but, here in Wish Ward specifically, Cllr Garry Peltzer Dunn and I have been working with residents (in particular, the Friends of Stoneham Park and Hove Civic Society), two schools and several businesses to bring forward an assortment of tree-planting and nature-related schemes on and around Portland Road. I have written about different elements of this in the past and have been a little frustrated by progress in dealing with the City Council. By the time that this is published, we will have attended the Environment, Transport & Sustainability Committee to request that all of our work is grouped as a single project and taken forward as one. If adopted, it will be the city’s most ambitious tree-planting project. Elements include the following: Westerman Complex, School Road We worked with council officers to secure £50,000 for street trees around the new Hyde scheme on School Road (BH2016/02535). Agreement has been reached in principle for these to go on Portland Road in front of the school and on School Road. The same Section 106 Agreement provides £69,000 for Stoneham Park as well. We would like some of this to go towards the Friends of Stoneham Park’s ‘wildlife corridor’ proposal for the south-west corner (along with the two park trees from the Mainstone House application as mentioned below).

The Section 106 Agreement for ‘Mainstone House’ (BH2018/01894) provides for seven trees in the locality following our negotiations with the developer. Our proposal at the time was that five go on Mainstone Road and two go in nearby Stoneham Park. Locations in principle have been suggested subject to an inspection of Mainstone Road and consultation with residents. Stoneham Park Two of three recently-planted trees that were paid for by the Friends of Stoneham Park have sadly died. Agreement has been reached for these to be replaced. As always, we welcome support, criticism, comments and questions. Cllr Robert Nemeth Wish Ward

Wish Park Surgery, Portland Road Agreement has been reached that four missing trees will be replaced outside the Wish Park Surgery building on Portland Road. These were damaged by motorists prior to the successful conclusion of our campaign in this location for Hove’s first pavement parking ban.
