Happy Christmas to everyone in Poets Corner! It’s hard to believe it’s December already, but Christmas is fast approaching. Our December edition has details of plenty of Christmas events to help you get into the festive spirit. We also have news from the Salvation Army in Conway Street, who need food donations for their Care & Share Hub. No-one should be alone at Christmas, unless they want to be, so if any of you would like some company on Christmas Day, contact Hove Methodist Church, who are running their annual free Christmas lunch with entertainment. They can even provide transport if you live in BN3 or BN41. Where you can, please try and use our wonderful local businesses for your Christmas shopping. We wish you all a peaceful and happy festive period! The Poets Pages Team info@poetspages.co.uk www.poetspages.co.uk Cover picture: Three wise pigs by Jane Galvin Publisher: Sussex Magazines Ltd. Local news...

News from the Friends of Stoneham Park I normally write about the month at hand and this month, December, should prompt Christmassy references and allusions to cold winters and snow which, usually, we don’t get until well into the new year, if at all. But I have to put pen to paper several weeks before Poets Pages comes out and it is still November. We have just seen the world and, particularly, Europe commemorating the centenary of the end of the First World War. Every year the ceremonies of Remembrance are emotionally moving but this year’s carried an added element of poignancy. I sometimes look at the foundation stone to Stoneham Park, on Marmion Road, and note the names of the great and the good who officiated at the opening ceremony in the autumn of 1913. I wonder how many of them served or had brothers, sons or nephews who enlisted to serve in that horrific conflict a year later. After the slaughter of the two world wars public institutions, local, national and international, were set up and existing ones strengthened.

Autumn in Poets Corner

Public institutions like Parliament, government and local government need a functioning civil society to fill the space between the state and the individual. Thousands of voluntary groups around Britain help to do just that. We play our part in civil society not by merely putting our trust in others to do things for us but by getting stuck in, ourselves. It may not look like much but it is vitally important that civil society is fed and watered if we are to live in a healthy and pluralistic democracy. By the time you read this we may already have put on (on 1 December) what we hope will be a successful and fun Christmas Market for the second year running

in its new format. The money raised from the market will enable us to do the things we want to do and, by extension, you want to get done. We have got some new trees coming and over 600 bulbs were planted this autumn, ready to make the park beautiful in the spring. We are setting up a gardening club, we hope, in the new year which is an exciting development that has been talked about for a long time. We would love to see you in some capacity in the new year. Please come and join us. From the Friends of Stoneham Park, I hope you have a happy and peaceful Christmas. Richard Hearnden

An artistic local resident...

Poets Person...Dawn East Dawn East lives in Linton Road and runs The Amazing Art Cart, which runs creative workshops. How long have you lived in Poets Corner? We moved to Grange Road five years ago then last year, after our second child was born, we moved to Linton Road. Both me and my husband studied in Brighton so it felt like a natural place to return to with kids after being in London. How did you come to set up The Amazing Art Cart? I worked for a magazine when I fell pregnant with my son nine years ago. I really wanted to stay at home with him but couldn’t quite afford to be a full time mum so I started childminding. I absolutely loved working with kids but after a few years felt that I wanted to return to my previous creative career but combine it with something to do with children. Working from home can be quite challenging so I came up with the idea of a mobile cart that I could run creative workshops from. With help from my husband, who’s a set builder, we designed The Amazing Art Cart.

Tell us about your project with West Hove Infant School... I worked with another local creative mum, Amy Urpi, to design their Junior Snail. We asked the children of West Hove to think about their local environment, about single use plastics and the impact this has on our oceans and seas. Pupils then produced an observational drawing of a piece of plastic which we had collected from on and around our local beaches which we then used to create our wonderful rainbow design. The kids were really excited to see their snail on display in Hove Museum. What other kinds of projects do you run? I’ve run projects in all sorts of places: libraries, museums, cafés and shops, as well as at events like The London Design Festival, and I run the kids workshops at Fortnum & Mason. My next local event is making Christmas stockings at The Snug on 16th December. What do you like to do when you’re not working? When we moved here we imagined we’d spend most of our free time on the beach but we really enjoy exploring the surrounding countryside. I love that we’re so close to Brighton and all its pubs, venues and independent shops; I grew up in Edinburgh and the two cities have lots in common so I feel very at home here. Old Shoreham Road

The south side of Old Shoreham Road, between Sackville Road and Leighton Road, in December 1967. These buildings were all built early in the 20th century as private dwellings with small front gardens. The first change came in 1937 when 174, at the west corner of Leighton Road, became a ladies’ hairdressers and several others were converted after the Second World War. The Salvation Army need food donations...

Salvation Army Care & Share Hub The Care & Share Hub has been running at Hove Salvation Army for over four years and offers a range of services to the local community, including guidance on benefit entitlement, form filling, budgeting, understanding official documents/letters, food parcels and a listening ear. In the last few months we’ve added to the service we provide an “Employment Plus Local” scheme (on a Tuesday afternoon). This seeks to help not just unemployed people in the local area develop the IT and personal skills necessary to get them back into work, but the “Plus” includes providing IT access and support for anyone doing anything online, but struggling for whatever reason. Our Hub’s original “Practical Advice and Support Service” (which runs on a Friday), includes a foodbank. It is what could be one of the oldest yet smallest foodbanks in the city. Since we opened here in Hove over 135 years ago we’ve always provided some form of food poverty relief, though this has increased in recent years. We are the only foodbank that operates in the south/central part of Hove. We do struggle to fill our

The new “Employment Plus Local” scheme

cupboards with enough tins and dry foods to meet the increasing demand on us (in the last 12 months demand has at least doubled, and some weeks it has been triple previous levels). Many times we have got to the stage of being only a week away from having nothing to give out, so we need some way of trying to increase our source of donated food. This would help us to ensure we don’t get so close to having to turn people away, or send them away with smaller food parcels. Last Christmas we closed our doors for the holiday period with only a few tins of food left, which would not have provided even one more parcel when we reopened in the New Year. Thankfully a neighbouring, but distant, foodbank came to our rescue. We currently have food collection points in Portland Road Sainsbury’s, Hove Methodist Church and our own charity shop in Sackville Road. Arrangements are currently being made for a point in one of the Co-ops in Portland Road and we will continue to try to expand these in other shops/public areas. Last year our reverse Advent Calendar was a big help in not only helping us provide Christmas hampers to families and the needy, but in adding to our stock for the coming year. This is also being run this year if anyone wants to take part. Not only are supplies of long-life foods (tinned/dry goods) needed, but toiletries, feminine hygiene products and household supplies (like toilet paper) are useful. Drew Tinsley

This article is by local financial adviser David Lewis...

Protect You and Your Families’ Futures Being able to leave your loved ones well provided for when you die is very reassuring for people contemplating their own mortality. It is also comforting to know that if something happened that meant you were unable to work, your expenses would be covered. No one likes to think about these things but being prepared for them means you have the best chance of looking after yourself and your family. Don’t Leave Your Estate to the Taxman Good estate planning can minimise the Inheritance Tax liability you will be leaving your family but also make things easier for them at this difficult time. Everyone is different so the various ways there are to reduce Inheritance Tax will suit some people and not others, so we can help you find the most appropriate solution. Looking After Your Loved Ones If you’re relatively young and healthy, life insurance is an inexpensive way to help look after the people most

important to you in the event of your death. There are lots of options out there and we can help you find the most suitable one. Avoid Adding Stress to Serious Illness The last thing you want if you are diagnosed with a serious illness is money worries. Serious illness cover exists to take that worry away if you find yourself unable to work. Like life insurance, it’s very affordable if you take it out when you are young and in good health. Worrying about what might happen in the future is never a good idea but preparing for it is a great one. If you would like some help putting protections in place for you and your family, call David Lewis Wealth Management on 01273 933743 for a no-obligation consultation.

Could you be a school governor?

West Hove Infant School seeks governors from the wider community West Hove Infant School is the largest infant school in the country; based on two sites at School Road and Connaught Road, the school has 610 children, 100 members of staff and an executive head (Wendy Harkness) who ensures the two sites are run as one school. Children spend three years at the school, starting in reception aged 4, and leave aged 7 ready for the more grown up world of junior school. The school prides itself in creating a community where children and their families feel welcome and valued. ‘A family of friends’ is the motto that appears on the children’s polo shirts and this sentiment of support and community is echoed throughout the school both through formal teaching and the array of after school clubs the pupils can enjoy with their peers. Learning is approached creatively and whilst children might not realise they are learning the staff are ever mindful of the rigour required to ensure national targets are met. In its last Ofsted report the school was awarded Outstanding; this came only two years after the second site at Connaught Road was opened.

Both school sites occupy mainly Victorian buildings, each with their own unique history. During WW1 the School Road site became part of the 2nd Eastern General Hospital, serving as a satellite to the Hove General Hospital. The Connaught site was designed by Victorian architect Thomas Simpson who designed thirteen schools across Brighton and Hove. It is rumoured that the actor Bernard Youens who played Stan Ogden in Coronation Street went to school at Connaught Road! The school relies on an army of volunteers to support the children and staff; this includes a board of governors who work behind the scenes to support the senior leadership team. This board is made up of parents, staff and members of the local community. Governors work as a team to support the development of teaching practices, school policies and the school’s finances. They also spend time with the pupils and teachers witnessing the school in action. The school is seeking to recruit governors from the wider community. The position requires no previous experience as a governor. If you would like to find out more, please contact the Clerk of Governors Nikki Wheeler via email: nikkiwheeler@westhove-inf.brighton-hove.sch.uk

A local history article by West Hove resident Rachel Bridgeman...

Bittersweet memories... Most of us have favourite sweets which bring back childhood memories and the chances are that one of them came from a Maynards factory. When the Maynard brothers opened their third factory at Stoneham Road, Hove, in 1927, they were already owners of a thriving confectionery business. From their very humble roots making sweets in their Islington kitchen in 1880, they had expanded their business to include over 140 shops, and factories in Harringay, Newcastle and now Hove. The factory was established in what formerly, from 1904 to 1912, had been a mineral water factory run by the Abbott brothers. Maynards remained a busy local employer until 1962 when its last stick of Brighton rock rolled off the production line. When Maynards merged with Bassetts in 1990, it took over the “Jelly Babies” brand which surprisingly has not always been known by this familiar household name. One hundred years ago, to mark the end of the Great War in 1918, George Bassett & Co produced their “Peace Babies”. They continued as a favourite treat for

Townhouses in Stoneham Road, converted from the Maynards sweet factory

British children right up to the Second World War when wartime sugar shortages halted production. It was not until 1953 that they were re-born as “Jelly Babies”. Confectionery historians believe that the origins of the jelly baby go back even further to 1864 when there were sweets ghoulishly named “unclaimed babies”; a name probably not so ghastly to Victorian ears as to our modern ones given that unclaimed babies were part of life in those days - babies being left on church steps and even locally in the front gardens of wealthy Hove households. However, like so many families of that Great War era, the Maynard family knew great loss when their youngest son, 20-year-old Cephus, was one of the many casualties of the Battle of the Somme during the attack on High Wood. To learn about the experience of the local Poets’ Corner community during the Great War, the men fighting abroad and those left behind on the Home Front, come on an historical guided walking tour. Hove Actually Walking Tours are fun, informative, informal and best suited to the incurably curious. Whether it’s your first visit or you have lived here your whole life, the tours are a great way to discover, uncover and experience the area. To receive more information about the programme of walks, email hoveactuallywalks@gmail.com or visit Facebook “Hove Actually Walking Tours”. Rachel Bridgeman (local historian and tour guide)

A campaign to help people in fuel poverty...

Brighton Lions Club - Project Wenceslas Brighton Lions Club is launching Project Wenceslas, a campaign to help combat fuel poverty in the city of Brighton and Hove. People who receive the annual Winter Fuel Payment and feel they do not need it are invited to donate the amount to Brighton Lions, who can assure that every penny will go towards alleviating fuel poverty. Fuel poverty has increased mainly due to rising energy prices and more people die from cold housing than die on the roads each year. The main causes of excess winter deaths are heart attacks and strokes caused by increased blood pressure from living in a cold home, as well as respiratory and breathing infections. The cold can lower the immune system’s resistance to respiratory infections. Mental health is also affected. Some people become cut off from friends and family because they don’t want to invite them into a cold house. Cold housing can also make it difficult for children to study or do homework, therefore affecting their education, work opportunities and long-term health. Donations can be made by credit/debit cards through Brighton Lions Club’s website at www.brightonlions.org. uk or cheques payable to Brighton Lions Club should be sent to the club at Lions Dene, The Deneway, Brighton, BN1 5AZ. People sending cheques are asked to confirm that their donations may be treated as Gift Aid so that the value of the donation can be increased by 25%.

Without exception every one of the team was friendly, helpful and professional. The standard of workmanship is outstanding, and my new doors are beautiful! Review of Countryman Improvements by a local resident I wouldn't hesitate to recommend these guys. Hard working and friendly, I was always astounded at how much they got done in a day. The work was completed to a professional level and all snags were dealt with in a timely and courteous manner. We even changed our minds about a few things along the way (like chucking in an additional window) which was never a problem for them. In summary: friendly, professional and reliable. A last chance to visit this lovely event...

Beach Hut Advent Calendar Having run the Beach Hut Advent Calendar since 2008, the small team of people from BEYOND have decided that 2018 will be their last year running this unique Hove seafront experience. Created to remind people of the Christian roots of the season of Advent, this popular community arts event has attracted hundreds of people to the seafront each night in December for 11 years to see the beach hut art installations created around a Nativity theme. This simple concept involves one hut each night in Advent opening up to showcase an art installation from 5.30pm-6.30pm, just like a giant Advent calendar. Only one hut is open each night and there are free mince pies and warming drinks on offer. The art is created by individual artists; beach hut owners; community groups; schools and churches; and the last ten years have seen an extraordinary range of different creative approaches. These have included live donkeys, laser shows, ice sculptures, contemporary dance, poetry, Morris dancing, spacemen, crib scenes and lots and lots of angels and stars.

The Beyond team will now focus on developing other creative projects but are open to others taking on the Beach Hut Advent Calendar mantle if they would like the event to continue. Email info@beyondchurch.co.uk if you are interested and details of the schedule of opening this year are on www.beyondchurch.co.uk

News from Portland Road-based charity Off The Fence...

Big Sleep Out for Brighton Homeless Despite the thunder storms and high winds, armed with only warm clothes and sleeping bags to protect them against the November night, around 50 people took part in the Big Sleep Out to raise money for Off The Fence, a charity committed to providing life-saving support for the homeless.

Winter Opening Hours Monday Closed Tuesday - Friday 9.30 - 4.00 Saturday and Sunday 10.00 - 3.30 Wishing everyone a wonderful Christmas and a very happy, healthy 2019! Closed for Christmas 23 December 2018, reopening 3 January 2019

The event started with a loud thunder storm with amazing lightning, which did not discourage the participants. Everyone survived the night and were rewarded with bacon butties from Youth With A Mission (YWAM) first thing in the morning. Sleeping in Aldrington School playground isn’t quite the same as sleeping on the streets; however it does give participants an opportunity to get an insight into the challenges faced by those sleeping rough. To find out how you can take part next time, contact Off The Fence on 01273 933885.
