Welcome to Poets Pages... In our April issue, local historian Rachel Bridgeman tells us how Easter would have been celebrated locally in years gone by. There are details of the 10th Brighton Marathon – good luck to anyone participating, including Nigel Sarjudeen of Portland Road-based Off The Fence, who is running his 10th Brighton Marathon for Martlets hospice. We also have news of this year’s chosen City Reads book, Let Me Be Like Water, our usual update from the Friends of Stoneham Park, and a feature on two former head teachers who are now running play sessions for young children near Poets Corner. We hope you find something of interest; we always love to hear from you with your articles. Have a great April and Happy Easter! Acts Of Kindness last month were seen in the park by Duke of Edinburgh Award volunteers Sophie and Lola, who have been regularly litter picking in the park and adding bright colour with new potted plants. Also, thanks to Tamworth Road resident David, who painted the final bench in a lovely bright yellow. A big thank you to these three individuals and all who help make the park the wonderful community space it is. Over To You… Is there an activity, park improvement or event that you would like to see take place in the park? We would love to hear your ideas. Local history from Rachel Bridgeman...

“Hey diddle-derry, Let’s dance on the Bury” (Trad. Anon.) What will you be doing over the Easter break? Perhaps sharing a Sunday roast with family; gorging on chocolate Easter eggs; going to church; relaxing in front of the latest boxset series; or even lying on a foreign beach. Whatever you are planning, it is sure to be quite different to the festivities enjoyed by our Hove predecessors. For the impoverished villagers of the old village of Hove (Hou, Houve or Hoove), centred around Hove Street, the traditional Easter Tuesday bull-baiting would have been the highlight of the celebrations. Until 1810, bull-baiting was held in Hove’s iron bull-ring, in what we now often refer to as West Hove. On Good Friday, you might have strolled eastward along the path through the fields, stopping at a small hillock in the second field out from the parish of Brighton (or Brighthelmstone). Standing 15 to 20 feet high, the mound rose prominently out of the flat coastal plain and is thought to have been the burial site of an ancient British chieftain. Hundreds of young people congregated there,

Bull Baiting in the 19th century by Samuel Henry Alken linking arms around the barrow to sing and play “kiss-inthe-ring”. This tradition continued on for half a century after the barrow had been flattened to make way for Palmeira Avenue, finally petering out at the beginning of the 20th century. Poets’ Corner residents from the early 20th century recount the tradition of Easter skipping: whole families turned out into the streets to join in the fun using ropes stretched from one pavement to the other, and symbolically using two ropes arranged in the shape of a cross. As many as a dozen children could skip at once whilst chanting Easter rhymes. To learn more about the history of Hove, join a guided walking tour led by a local historian and tour guide. Hove Actually Walking Tours are fun, informative, informal and best suited to the incurably curious. To receive the Spring 2019 programme, email hoveactuallywalks@gmail.com. Will include NEW tours: Hidden Hove - the ancient village through the ages; Cliftonville - a Victorian Gem; and A Country of Two Nations - service, struggle and salvation in Poets’ Corner. The popular “Poets Corner 1914-18: The War is Over” and “Soldiers, Saints, Celebrities and Saxons“ tours will be repeated. And more new exciting tours in the pipeline!

Hove Trolley Bus This experimental electric trolley bus was introduced by Hove Corporation in 1914, for a brief period of four weeks. The service was free and ran from the top of Goldstone Villas to the bottom of George Street, then into Church Road, opposite St Aubyns. Here it is seen at the foot of Goldstone Villas, almost at the junction with Blatchington Road. At the right is the high wall of Holy Trinity Church, now Trinity Medical Centre. News of this year’s City Reads book...

City Reads 2019 City Reads is an annual citywide reading festival, when one book is selected for everyone to read. This year it runs from 23rd April to 12th May as part of the Brighton Festival and the chosen title is “Let Me Be Like Water” by S.K. Perry, who at 29 years old is the youngest writer ever chosen. Sarah Perry was born in Croydon but currently lives in Leeds. She said: “I have a deep love for Brighton and Hove and feel really moved that, through City Reads, “Let Me Be Like Water” will reach more of the city’s readers.” In the book, songwriter Holly is in a state of limbo, having impulsively escaped to Brighton following the death of her boyfriend. The solitude she had so craved in London leaves her feeling alone in her grief. It is when she meets Frank, a retired gay magician, that the tide begins to turn. Gradually, as she is introduced to his eclectic group of friends, she starts to heal. For more information on City Reads events visit collectedworks.co.uk.

News from Martlets hospice...

Stallholders wanted Martlets is appealing for stallholders to sign up to its popular Hove Park Carnival on Spring Bank Holiday Monday – 27th May 2019. The family event always attracts crowds of people, with over 3,000 visiting last year, and pitches for stallholders sell out fast. Martlets is calling for potential stallholders to book their places now. Charlotte Bolton from the hospice’s Fundraising team said: “It’s always a hugely busy day for stallholders and we are encouraging people that might be interested to book their pitch to make sure they don’t miss out! The funds raised from the hire of these pitches will help Martlets care for local people and their families.” The cost of a stall for businesses is £40 and for charities it is £25. Martlets is particularly interested in hearing from local businesses with arts and crafts, health and well-being, beauty and food products – although the hospice is unable to accept stalls serving food. For further details or to register please contact 01273 747455 or email fundraising@martlets.org.uk. Stallholders can also register online:

Meet a former head teacher who’s one of the founders of Play Time Sussex...

Poets Person... Jo Kelly Jo Kelly and Rebecca Hope have recently set up Play Time, offering play sessions for preschool and primary aged children. They started at Hove Methodist Church but have now moved to a permanent home in Eaton Gardens. Jo lives very close to Poets Corner, on Old Shoreham Road. She told us more... What are your backgrounds? Rebecca and I both come from an education background – both being headteachers in West Sussex schools. Why did you decide to set up Play Time? We both needed a new challenge away from an education system that has become very pressurised and accountability driven. Play Time has given us the opportunity to go back to the creativity that we enjoyed when we first became teachers. We can give children the opportunities to develop their imaginative and problem solving skills in an inspiring and thoughtful environment away from testing. Tell us more about the play sessions... We have a variety of rooms that offer different experiences. There is currently a doctor’s surgery, a Jo (left) and Rebecca

Cat... Cat. Two feet long. Fat. In all directions. Especially around the girth. Cute since the litter, my Honeybun Fuhrer. First padded onto carpet on pink paws. Then toddled out back onto lawn. Lazy, wearied from adulation, Crouching under late sun and California Poppy. In casual regality basks. Now paws knead the kitchen mat and Whiskers twitch for supper. A tail is cast, swishes. Gulped in a flash, Chopped liver. Honeybun meows wanting more. The diet’s still on. Until hell freezes My shampoo and set I won’t give in. Tension builds. I gently stroke Bunnikins. “Another half pound to go. Bunnikins bawls, I scream. He’s dug his claws into my knee again. I back up against the pantry door And on it goes. Then with a glare Sugar Plum and sagging girth stump away, There’s a dead sort of silence and, Small to my ear, next door’s budgerigar Chats “Merry Christmas”. At least someone’s happy. Some time in the middle of the night Angel Pie jumps onto my bed. Meows timorous hunger. I hear, I love him. A paw presses into my nostrils, He worms his way next to me. Honeybun. I cuddle my baby. Local news...

New Public Use Defibrillator Hove Methodist Church have installed an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) on the back wall of the church for public use (on the corner of Cowper Street and St Patrick’s Road). An AED is a portable device that diagnoses life-threatening cardiac issues and treats them through defibrillation. The electricity provided by the device stops the cardiac arrest and allows the heart to establish an effective rhythm.

emergency services will advise you of your nearest AED and the code of the cabinet it is in. Once you open the device, you will hear clear instructions on how to use it. It’s very easy to use and you don’t need to be trained to use it.

If you feel you are with someone who needs the support, call 999 for an ambulance. Whilst you are waiting for the ambulance, the

Martlets Volunteer Open Day Martlets is holding a Volunteer Open Day on Saturday 6th April. The day will showcase the different opportunities available, how volunteering impacts on the services that Martlets provides and the benefits to individuals from volunteering. The Volunteer Open Day will take place at the hospice on Wayfield Avenue between 10am and 3pm. Martlets is welcoming everyone from all ages and backgrounds as there are so many different roles available. There will be opportunities to meet staff, take a tour and participate in activities. Current volunteers will also be available to discuss what they do. Volunteers could be doing anything from helping at a fundraising event, tending to the garden, running art activities, driving patients to appointments or volunteering in Martlets shops or distribution centres. Whether people are able to offer a few hours once in a while or a regular weekly shift, anyone who becomes part of ‘Team Martlets’ plays an important role in helping to keep the hospice running smoothly. Learn more about Martlets and volunteering on Saturday 6th April between 10am and 3pm at Wayfield Avenue, Hove, BN3 7LW.

Nigel Sarjudeen

nd 2019 Nigel Sarjudeen of Portland Road-based charity Off The Fence is to run his tenth Brighton Marathon for Martlets. He has already raised £9,266 for the hospice, but is hoping to beat his target of £10,000. Nigel was inspired to run following unexpected heart problems in 2006 and, after rehabilitation, he joined a local running club. He said, “It was a real shock because I was young and fit. However, in some ways I’m glad it happened when it did because I was able to get over it.” When he gained his place in the 2010 Brighton Marathon, Nigel decided to support Martlets, since some of his friends and their families had been supported by the hospice. He said, “I never intended that I would keep on going; I did the first marathon, then the second and after that I just kept on running and now I’m on my tenth! One year, towards the end, I remember thinking, ‘I’m hurting and in pain.’ Then I remembered all the people who are hurting because they have lost their loved ones and it drove me forward.”

A new website for local residents and businesses...

Know before you go…. We think we know what you guys are thinking before you use a business for the first time. How do I know they will do a good job? Will they overcharge me? What if they mess it up and don’t put it right? Lots of natural fears kick in before stepping boldly into the unknown and using a business for the first time. The above factors are why word of mouth is such a valuable thing. A positive word from a neighbour or a family member can often make the difference as to who you choose to do a job for you but these golden nuggets of information aren’t always readily available. Well, the above factors combined with these statistics…

91% of people have used and many use regularly online reviews when thinking about using a service or buying a product.

86% of people will trust an online review as much as a personal recommendation.

61% of people form an opinion on a business after reading between 1 and 6 reviews.*

We all need someone who is on our side

..have led us to the development of a new website just for you – the readers of our magazines!! On this website you will be able to read reviews of local businesses that are advertising in our magazines. Each review will be verified as genuine by phone and email and will have been added to the site by a local resident. In addition to reviews each business on the site will also have a business profile page with more information about the business, links to their website, any official bodies they are members of as well as a logo to indicate that we have checked that they are insured. To add further confidence for you, the potential customer, it will also state how long they have been advertising with us. Also each business has a page where uploaded photographs of their work are available for you to see. The website is called Trusted and Local. If a business is featured on the site their advert will carry the Trusted and Local logo on it so please look out for the logo and check out the reviews!
