News from The Spire on the ongoing transformation of St Mark’s Chapel...

The Spire - a vibrant creative space for East Brighton... The transformation of St Mark’s Chapel into a vibrant creative space for East Brighton continues. The Spire represents a new offer for East Brighton: for artists, a flexible space in which to develop, rehearse and present new art and performance, and for audiences, a uniquely atmospheric venue in which to experience it. Originally intended as the private chapel of St Mary's Hall, a school for the daughters of poor clergy, St Mark’s was partly built in 1838 at the request of Frederick Hervey, 1st Marquess of Bristol. Arguments over whether or not it should be open to the public would delay its completion for more than ten years. It was finally consecrated in 1849, before becoming the parish church of Kemptown in 1873. By the 1980s attendances had fallen, and in 1986 the Diocese of Chichester declared the church redundant.

It was taken over by St Mary’s Hall to become its chapel and concert hall - nearly 150 years after the idea was first proposed. When St Mary’s Hall merged with Roedean School in 2009, St Mark’s was returned to the parish of St George’s. In 2016, the newly formed arts charity The Spire Arts Ltd was granted a licence to run the building as a community arts space. Today, The Spire is forging a reputation for one-ofa-kind arts experiences specially created for this magnificent Grade II listed venue, such as Truestory Theatre’s hugely popular production of A Christmas Carol, which returns this Christmas. As a regular venue for Brighton Festival and Brighton Fringe, The Spire has hosted impressive sound and light installations (notably Lou Reed Drones in 2016 and XFRMA in 2018), as well as dance and theatre companies from around the world. The Spire actively supports the creation of new art and performance: recent commissions have included Abigail Conway’s An Evening with Primrose; Thomas Buckley’s video installation for Brighton Digital Festival, Come Inside It’s Raining; and Harry ClaytonWright’s two-week durational performance, The Fortnight. The Spire also remains a popular venue for weddings, film shoots and private events. Although in use, the interior of St Mark’s is in need of extensive modernisation to make it fully accessible. Plans for its refurbishment include the installation of a new heating system; new toilet facilities; technical equipment; and the restoration of its many beautiful heritage features. This ambitious plan requires wide support from the funders and the local community. There’s an exciting journey ahead. If you would like to be part of it, get in touch with David Sheppeard or Faith Dodkins at info@thespirearts.org

Our local history article from Katherine Prior at St Mary’s Church...

Brighton’s German Medical Connection The inscription on a church lectern uncovers a surprising history of German medical endeavour in Brighton. St Mary’s Church has a beautiful brass lectern in the form of an eagle that was gifted by Caroline Porker Franz in memory of her husband, Johann Christoph August Franz. Augustus, as he was known in England, was born in Dresden, Saxony, in 1807, and qualified as a physician at the University of Leipzig in 1833. Initially, he specialised in eye surgery and devising exercises to lessen short-sightedness. In 1839, having moved to London, he published an English text for the general reader on eye care entitled: ‘The Eye and a Critique on the Art of Preserving the Organ’. All of this makes a lectern – an aid to reading – an appropriate memorial for him. But what is it doing in a Brighton church? Augustus first appears in newspaper reports of fashionable visitors to Brighton in 1841. The following year he published ‘A Treatise on Mineral Waters, with

The Royal German Spa in Queen’s Park, c1830 Credit: Wellcome Collection

Particular Reference to those Prepared at the Royal German Spa, at Brighton’. The Royal German Spa was an elegant, porticoed pump room in Queen’s Park. It had been established in 1825 by another Dresden physician, Friedrich Adolphus Struve, who had perfected the means for artificially replicating the chemical composition and temperature of the mineral waters of famous natural spas, such as Seltzer and Carlsbad. Brighton’s ‘spa’ was just one of many pump rooms that Struve opened in fashionable cities. Other locations included Dresden, Leipzig, Berlin, Warsaw, Moscow and Kiev. Augustus Franz’s enthusiasm for the Royal German Spa may have been dictated by scientific interest alone, but given the Dresden connection and the fact that Struve had died in 1840, it seems likely that he had acquired a financial stake in its operations. In any event, henceforth he ran a medical practice in Brighton during the social season, first at 22, Old Steine, and then at number 11. His Brighton client list was impressive, and featured the long-serving Russian foreign minister, Count von Nesselrode; Austria’s Prince Metternich; and the Swedish war minister, Count Gyldenstolpe. Brighton newspapers reported the recovery of these foreign dignitaries with civic pride and claimed Augustus for their own: ‘our Dr Franz’. They also celebrated his public reception by the King of Saxony when the latter visited Brighton in 1844. Augustus kept up a three-way medical practice in Brighton, London and Dresden until his death at his Paddington residence in 1870. He was buried in Dresden, and but for his widow’s memorial to him at St Mary’s, there would be few traces of his career in Brighton. Katherine Prior

Meet the founders of Beach Box Brighton on Madeira Drive...

Beach Box Sauna... a new way to enjoy the sea Katie Bracher and Liz Watson run Beach Box Brighton, a sauna in a converted horse box at the Sea Lanes pop-up on Madeira Drive. We asked them to tell us more about it... What are your backgrounds? Katie first came across pop-up saunas at festivals, and in 2012 a wood-fired sauna appeared in her local East London town centre as part of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad. She was going through a tough time and found that having regular saunas was a huge support. She co-founded the British Sauna Society and then worked at a Finnish pop-up sauna on the rooftops of the Southbank Centre in 2017. That year she moved to Brighton and met Liz who had just given up her longstanding career as a homeopath and had been planning to start a municipal spa for all near the seafront. How did you come to set up Beach Box? Inspiration to set up came from a loan of mobile sauna WARMTH, designed by Bethany Wells, which

Katie Bracher and Liz Watson

premiered at Brighton Fringe 2018; the beach sauna concept was a huge hit! This sparked what is now Beach Box Sauna. Tell us more about the sauna...

Does your home spark joy?

We have two saunas now. Both wood-fired which gives out a very soft heat. One is in a horse box and seats seven (80 degrees) and the other is a 20-seater show sauna (60 degrees) made from upcycled packing crates. Both have different types of heat and create different experiences. And of course you have the option to cool down in the sea nearby or in the warm and cold showers onsite. What has the response been like? We are creating a city of sauna addicts! Once tried everyone returns with more friends. Nothing beats that post-sauna high, plus it’s a new way to enjoy the sea. It combines perfectly with the Sea Lanes mission to get people connected to the sea again. Have you got any special events over the summer?

We are here to help  07903 792271 (ask for Tilo)  info@cluttermeister.co.uk  www.cluttermeister.co.uk

We’re open Thursdays to Sundays and bank holiday Mondays every week, year round. We are bringing sauna masters from all over Europe to teach us and our customers their national sauna rituals. For example we are having a Scandinavian Summer Solstice sauna event, Baltic sauna masters and German Aufguss sessions in the next couple of months. For more information visit www.beachboxspa.co.uk

Local residents have started an ePetition for Brighton & Hove City Council to clean up Kemp Town. The petition says: “We the undersigned petition Brighton & Hove Council to focus on the enormous amount of street litter, human faeces on stairs and beach, overflowing bins, unsatisfactory street cleaning, dog fouling and graffiti throughout Kemp Town. We also need to improve recycling access and sorting to all households. “We need to urgently improve the cleaning of Kemp Town. We need to make the streets clean and safe so that families can fully enjoy Kemp Town and all it has to offer. The streets in our part of Brighton are significantly dirtier and Kemp Town has more “no go” areas than other parts of Brighton and Hove.” The petition runs until 24th June. If it is signed by 1,250 people, it will be presented to the Environment, Transport & Sustainability Committee on 25th June. To sign the petition, go to phantom.brighton-hove. gov.uk/mgEPetitionDisplay.aspx?id=634 or look for “Petitions” on the council website: www.brighton-hove.gov.uk.
