Welcome to The Kemptown Rag! This month we have a competition to win two tickets to the Luna Beach Cinema, which will be back on Brighton beach from 31st July. We also have details of upcoming Pride events. The founder of Pool to Pier, Brighton’s first sea swimming course, tells us how the course has grown over the last 10 years – they are planning a number of events to mark their anniversary – and we hear from a volunteer for local charity Time to Talk Befriending on the benefits of befriending. Volunteers are particularly needed in this part of the city. We didn’t quite get the weather most of us wanted in June... Here’s to a sunny July! The Kemptown Rag Team

7 A great course for anyone wanting to become a confident sea swimmer...

Ten years of Pool to Pier! “Pool to Pier” - Brighton’s first sea swimming course - is ten years old this summer. Since it started with 13 plucky pool swimmers in 2009, it’s grown into one of the most popular courses in the city with the aim of turning competent pool swimmers into confident sea swimmers. Almost 1,000 swimmers have taken part and become confident at swimming round the Palace Pier and beyond. Based at the Brighton Swimming Centre in Kemptown and the beach on Madeira Drive, the year-round programme focuses on stroke development, stamina, tides and currents, and becoming proficient and capable open water swimmers. Paul Smith, who founded Pool to Pier, commented: “I was smitten with sea swimming myself and wondered if other people would be equally interested and passionate about the sea. I always had an environmental perspective in the back of my mind that the more people who swam in the sea, the more people who would care about the sea!” The swimmers who have completed Pool to Pier have been from very diverse backgrounds, but they share similar aims – they are keen to learn something new, have an adventurous spirit and often see open sea

swimming as a way to “switch off” from a hectic life. During the ten years we have encountered a fascinating range of marine life including dolphins, porpoises and seals, and keeping the beach and sea clean is paramount. The environment is too big an issue now not to see litter (especially plastic) as everyone’s problem. We should always think, “Yes, it’s not our litter – but it’s our ocean!” It’s been an immense privilege to help introduce both adults and teenagers to the sea. I now see many of them swimming every day in the sea and I can see how it’s beneficially impacted on their lives. I’m so grateful for their support and for that of my team of coaches and lifeguards. We’ve planned a number of events to mark our anniversary including a huge beach clean, a swim on route to the wind farms and a social reunion with former swimmers. We are passionate about the sea and are looking forward eagerly to the next ten years. If you would like to find out more about the Pool to Pier programme, please get in touch. 01273 434400 www.pooltopier.com. Paul Smith Pool to Pier, Brighton Swimming Centre

It was his voice, which did not break during adolescence, that led him into drag. He was born Isaac Whitehouse in Birmingham in 1883, the son of a brass finisher who had worked his way up to own a small foundry. He was working for his father and contemplating a career in chemistry, when his sister’s singing teacher, the contralto Grace Ivell, overheard him singing effortlessly at the top of the countertenor range. She took him on as a pupil and by the time he was 20 he was singing professionally as a tenor and a male soprano. From there it was a short step – possibly not one approved by his father, who was also a Wesleyan preacher – to a career in vaudeville as a female impersonator. His first shows billed him as ‘The Perfect Lady and The Perfect Man’, and featured him switching rapidly between costumes and voices. Quite soon, however, the lady came to dominate,

and he became as famous for his exquisite gowns as for his singing and comic turns. In 1910, he married Rachel Isaacs, a London variety artist known professionally as Ray Hartley. After the birth of their daughter Betty in 1911, Ray returned to the stage with Bert, performing solo dances during his costume changes. In time, Betty joined the act too. Bert was on the cusp of success in America when the Great War began. He spent most of the war performing in Britain, but appears to have had a stint in 1918 entertaining American forces on the Western Front. After the war, his fame soared. He had top billing in Britain, Ireland, America, South Africa and Australia. Music publishers clamoured to feature his photo on sheet music covers, and dozens of postcards were published showing him as a perfectly primped flapper girl. In the 1930s, nearing 50, he shifted his drag act from believable illusion to the broad comedy of pantomime. He performed in Brighton virtually every Christmas until the Second World War. A superlative Widow Twankey and Dame Hubbard, he used to bring the house down with his song ‘Nobody loves a fairy when she’s old.’ He and Ray were living at Fairways, on Dyke Road, when he died of an asthma attack on 29 November 1949. For one recently so celebrated, his death was surprisingly little noticed in the press. Katherine Prior

Although the coast along Brighton’s shore is lovely at this time of year, inland has its attractions also. From the top of Lewes Castle there are particularly fine views of the Downs and the winding River Ouse. One of my favourite summer trips is over to East Dean with its beautiful village green and pubs full of old world charm. Our journey took us past Beachy Head with its famous lighthouses, one atop the cliffs and one below. The views out to sea are breathtaking, and it’s possible to see the ships heading down from the Dover Strait on a clear day.Once home there is plenty to do with our urban garden. During summer we can have our windows open without fear of a sudden draught upsetting our more delicate plants. The hibiscus is one of my summer favourites. Inexpensive and available from either the local florist or garden centre, it is robust enough to keep flowering all

eaking up for the long summer holidays. A trip ws and fields of golden ripening grain - wheats sea. summer long and well into the autumn. The flowers are simply gorgeous and the trick is seeing if more than one bud at a time will explode into exotic colour overnight. To have two flowers open at the same time is an achievement, but three simultaneously gives oneself a sense of pride. Misting in the summer is still important as the air indoors will never be as moist as outside overnight. Some guides caution against misting plants when they are flowering or in direct sunshine. I usually mist first thing in the morning, particularly if a long, hot day is forecast, and again in the evening seeking to replicate the dew they would experience outside.

Run - Shuffle - Play The Scissor Sisters are live in my earbuds. They don’t feel like dancing. And I don’t feel like running, no sir, no runnin’ today. Reluctantly, I head out the door. We live on the cusp of Kemptown – the Lidl Border that leads you either into Brighton Central, or out to the Deans. Today I turn left and head towards Rottingdean Windmill. In the distance it looks tiny, no bigger than those brightly-coloured, plastic pinwheels you can buy at the beach. If I hold my hand up I can make it disappear completely. Worse, not only does it look far, far away, it looks - uphill. Unlike me, the Scissor Sisters stop their protestations and Missy Elliott kicks in. She commands me to Get My Freak On. You can’t really mess with Missy, so I begin my little uphill trot. The road levels out over the Marina then heads up again past the Hogwart heights of Roedean School. A lean, lycra-clad runner sprints past and smiles. I used to ignore this running camaraderie, feeling I wasn’t worthy. Meghan Trainor cured me of that - you try “Bringing booty baaaaack” and not grinning.

Just before the windmill there is a steep incline. I rely on shuffle play like an oracle – the song that lands predicts the ease with which I will climb. Hurt by Christina Aguilera never bodes well. Today Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars come to the rescue with a bit of Uptown Funk. Don’t believe me, just watch! It’s an 8K run from our home to the windmill and back. This summer I am developing a strange distance-based knowledge of Brighton because I have pledged to run 500km to raise £500 for dementia. It works out at about 25km a week, squeezed in around work and life and dinner. I am not one of life’s natural athletes so the pop party in my head is the thing that keeps me on-track. With all those up and downs and doubts and triumphs, I’m learning that running is a good metaphor for life. Sometimes all it takes is a little bit of Bonkers with Dizzee Rascal. But when things get tough you have to call on higher powers. Sometimes you need Beyoncé. I might not feel like running but as Bey would say: I’ma keep running, cos a winner don’t quit on themselves. Harriet of Time to Talk Befriending tells us about befriending in Kemptown...

Befriending Charlotte... “Before I met you I didn’t use to care if I lived or died. Now I want to live forever!” (Charlotte, Time to Talk Befriending Scheme member aged 89 years). Whenever I’m asked what it’s like to be part of Time to Talk Befriending, I always want to get across that it is hugely rewarding to be “part of the solution to loneliness and making an impact on someone’s life”. However, personally I don’t feel like I’m giving up anything to spend time with Charlotte, who I have been visiting for three years now, or that it’s even a charitable thing! The duality of the benefits to the be-friendship is just as important in my life as it is for Charlotte. There is something underrated about simply making time to sit and have a face to face chat - no technology, no mutual gossip but a connection stripped back to basics of wanting to have a real and quality connection with another human being. I have a hunch that if we dug into why people volunteer for this scheme it would show that we

(volunteers) are looking for company in just as much the same way as the members are. Whilst it’s not necessarily loneliness in the conventional sense that is driving us to volunteer, with the increase of isolation in society - especially in the millennial generation (because of social media quite frankly) - I think the work Time to Talk Befriending do and their befriending model will become increasingly important in society in recognising the value of connection. I can’t recommend befriending enough so if you have an hour to give once a week or once a fortnight please contact the team on 01273 737710 volunteers@tttb.org.uk www.tttb.org.uk/volunteers/ for further details. 21 Great activities for the summer...

School holiday adventures... Stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) - one of the fastest growing water sports in the world - is taking the UK by storm with a number of active and enthusiastic SUP communities springing up across the South East. Calum, co-director at Bike SUP Brighton (an adventure sports company based in Brighton) outlines why mountain biking and SUP combine to make the perfect adventure experience: “SUP has similarities to other water sports like surfing or kayaking, but it is much more accessible than either. Beginners can achieve a basic level of competence relatively quickly and it is suitable for a wide variety of ages. It’s incredibly relaxing once you get the hang of it! Mountain biking offers more of a thrill, as you get that rush of adrenaline by exploring and navigating flowing trails. Both activities give people the opportunity to invest in both their physical and mental wellbeing.” If you have tried SUPing you’ll appreciate the physical benefits - although it looks quite sedate you’ll still probably discover muscles you never knew you had!

As a BSUPA instructor, Calum adds that “once you have got to grips with the basic paddle technique, SUPing can be a fantastic way to unwind, engage your core and escape the urban jungle.” Visitors to Sussex beaches may have seen SUPs out in the waves, but there is an abundance of inland SUP venues in Sussex too, including rivers such as the Arun, Ouse and Adur, with many routes providing a chance to escape and enjoy unspoilt beauty and an abundance of wildlife. First-timers will appreciate the accessibility, safety and views of the meanders at Cuckmere Haven, whereas more experienced paddlers can enjoy the fast-flowing fun of the rivers Adur and Arun. Mountain bikers are also spoilt for choice in the Sussex area, with great riding to be had at Friston and Bedgebury forest, not to mention the abundance of secret singletrack spots for more experienced riders. With the numbers of SUPs set to increase again this summer, Calum notes that new paddlers should have a good understanding of the potential hazards, including wind and tides, and should consider doing a ‘ready to ride’ course with a BSUPArecognised school. Bike SUP Brighton offer Paddle Board and Bike Adventure Days over the school holidays for 12-15 year olds as well as Paddle Board lessons for all ages and adventure days for groups.
