We have news of a project to gather memories of Brighton Dome. Perhaps you can help? The Grand Brighton Half Marathon celebrates its 30th birthday this month with a special medal and there’s a new Scootathlon coming to Madeira Drive in May, as part of Brighton Run2Music. We also have details of a new exhibition at Brighton Museum of First Women Portraits by Anita Corbin – images of pioneering women of the 21st century.

Simon Lightfoot reviews the New Steine French Bistro...
A perfect end to the week at the New Steine Bistro I can think of few greater pleasures than finishing a long week by walking through a crisply cold evening to an enticing restaurant for some quality food. This was the great treat my partner Gill and I enjoyed last Friday, when we were so warmly welcomed at the New Steine French Bistro by the charismatic Hervé and his utterly charming team. Situated on the western edge of Kemptown’s New Steine, the bistro offers diners an evening of elegance at exceptional value. From the art deco lighting to the bespoke art adorning the walls, the restaurant feels like a welcoming mix of pianolounge cool and homely familiarity. Furnished with drinks, we began choosing our starters, and with such a variety, changed our minds several times. I nearly had the crab cakes, almost had the squid, practically had the escargot, before actually having crispy chicken rolls. My dithering, however, was worthwhile: generously filled inside and wonderfully crispy outside, the addition of beansprouts and lettuce leaves to wrap them in before dipping in soy sauce, gave the dish a delightful freshness. Meanwhile, Gill dabbled with smoked mackerel rillette before choosing the French onion tart. Pinching a mouthful (purely research, not greed!), it was difficult not to take more, as it avoided being overpowering like many onion tarts, and was instead enjoyably delicate, whilst still full of flavour. After more selection heartache over the wide range of mains, I elected the duck confit. Served with sautéed new potatoes and a ramekin of gravy, the duck was cooked to perfection. The skin was crispy and bursting with flavour and the meat itself, benefiting from slow cooking, was moist, tender, and fell
from the bone with a mere nudge. Tucking into Gill’s plaice meunière (more research), I knew why she was also beaming with delight. The delicacy of the plaice, and the lemon in the sauce, were perfectly accompanied by the traditional capers and a side of beautifully seasoned crushed potatoes. Desserts of crème brûlée and chocolate mousse were a delectable indulgence to end a delicious feast. Attractively presented, they brought what felt like a classy treat of an evening (despite my best efforts to lower the standards by spilling gravy all over the table and my thankfully-napkinned lap) to a close. Bid farewell as sincerely as we were welcomed, it really was a perfect end to the week, and ideal start to the weekend. Simon Lightfoot

Brighton Dome & Festival want your stories...
Memories needed for heritage project Were you mesmerised by Pink Floyd’s first performance of Dark Side of the Moon? Did you sneak into David Bowie’s infamous 1973 Ziggy Stardust gig as a teenager? Have you got a special memory of taking part in Brighton Festival children’s parade? Or did you ever perform on the Brighton Dome stage? Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival are asking the public to record their memorable stories as part of a new heritage project, I Was There. The interviews and collection of memorabilia will be archived for future generations, and selected stories will be presented in an online exhibition and feature in a public programme of tours and talks at Brighton Dome. Kate Richardson, Participatory Interpretation Manager at Brighton Dome, said: “We’d love to hear people’s unique recollections or from anyone who has a special connection to Brighton Dome and Brighton Festival – whether it was 50 years ago or more recently. We’re keen to speak to audience members recounting how they felt about seeing their favourite artist or witnessing a sporting event; performers and participants who took part in a show, as well as former employees who can tell us what it

was like working behind the scenes.” Since being converted into a performance venue 150 years ago, Brighton Dome’s three stages have seen a dazzling array of illustrious artists and musical icons such as Patti Smith, Beyoncé, David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix, as well as hosting tea dances, wrestling matches and graduation ceremonies. And since 1967, Brighton Festival has brought thousands of international artists to the city. The National Lottery Heritage Fund is supporting the oral history project as part of their contribution towards the refurbishment of Brighton Dome’s Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre. Sussex-based community arts and heritage organisation, Strike a Light – Arts & Heritage, are delivering the project with the help of a team of volunteers who will be trained to collate audio interviews from participants. Nicola Benge, Project Manager at Strike a Light, added: “Capturing individual experiences provides a valuable insight into the social history of the arts in Brighton & Hove. We’d like to record memories from a broad cross-section of communities and age groups to reflect how the arts and these historically important venues have had an impact on people’s lives.”

The Brighton Half Marathon is back on 23rd February…
Grand Brighton Half Marathon celebrates 30 years The Grand Brighton Half Marathon celebrates its 30th anniversary this month, marking a very special race year for the much-loved half marathon. Organisers have some exciting plans up their sleeves to mark the big birthday on Sunday 23rd February. Race Director Martin Harrigan commented: “This year is going to be a great year as we celebrate our 30th anniversary. We’ve got a very special medal, we’ll be welcoming back runners from the race’s history plus some exciting new race ambassadors including Brighton’s own Norman Cook.” The Grand Brighton Half Marathon race is organised by Brighton-based charity The Sussex Beacon, which provides specialist support and care for people living with HIV through both inpatient and outpatient services. The charity helps hundreds of people living with HIV in Sussex and the race is the charity’s largest annual event. The Sussex Beacon Chief Executive, Bill Puddicombe, commented: “The Grand Brighton Half Marathon is a big day for the Sussex Beacon, but also for all the other charities who take part and fundraise on the day. There are so many different ways to get involved – as a runner, as a relay team, or as a volunteer helping out on the day. It is the thousands of people that turn up, participate and cheer on the runners who create the party atmosphere for this great event.”
one of the most popular races in the UK since its first event in the 1990s. The race is supported for the third year by The Grand Hotel, which sits in the middle of the 13.1-mile route. Andrew Mosley, General Manager at The Grand Brighton, said: “It’s a real pleasure to have our hotel sit in the centre of the race course for an event that’s so special to the Brighton community. It’s always wonderful to see runners coming together in support of Sussex Beacon and many other great causes, and we can’t wait for 2020’s race to begin. Fingers crossed for good weather, and even better race times!” The race starts on Madeira Drive at 9.30am, heading east as far as Ovingdean, then back west to Hove Lagoon, before returning to the finish on Madeira Drive, and you can cheer for the runners at various locations in Brighton and Hove. There will be some road closures near the seafront. For more information, visit www.brightonhalfmarathon.com

The latest column from Catherine Considine...
Love: A Definition Have you had enough of love this month? I wasn’t planning to go here but I’ve just got in from a rainy dogwalk in the park and I had one of those moments that all dog owners will recognise: a rush of pure love for my four-legged friend. Stormy days whip him into a frenzy of excitement. His naturally upturned tail blows into his eye-line and auto-triggers his brain to chase mode. To watch him leaping in hopeless, joyful circles is to see the shape of optimism. It is simultaneously ridiculous and irresistible. Much like love. This is the love I’m interested in capturing. Not the flighty, red rose-scented variety, but these mud splattered moments that leap from nowhere and change your mood, your day and if you are really lucky – your life. I noticed a mother and teen daughter on the bus recently, needling each other about nothing in particular. Their words suggested an argument but as they talked the mother had her arm draped over the girl’s shoulder and the girl unconsciously stroked her mum’s earlobe. Love. Coming home from London

I allowed an elderly couple off the train in front of me. He stepped off first then held out his hand to help her mind the gap. Love. Over coffee recently a good friend held my hand as we chatted about a tricky life change. You get the picture. But let’s get back to the park because I want to tell you about another dog walk. Summer this time, a lazy sort of ramble where dogs tend to play and their humans are inclined to stand about and chat. An elderly woman told me about the loss of her life partner. She was matter-of-fact about the illness - cancer, and that it was time; and about the loneliness of her empty home. She was grateful for their life together and now, she said, looked forward to these daily dog walks and the little chats along the way. ‘It’s all just love,’ she said. ‘What is?’ I asked. ‘This,’ she said. ‘This lovely day, the memory of my partner, watching my dog. It’s all love.’ And she gave me this beautiful definition, which I offer you in place of a Valentine’s heart. Love: To find joy in the physical form of the object of your affection; and to care deeply for their wellbeing. Catherine Considine

Brighton Run2Music launches Scootathlon This May, Brighton Run2Music on Madeira Drive will be including an extra race especially for children aged 3–8 years. The Scootathlon, which is already part of the Brighton and Hove Triathlon weekend, is now going to be included in the sister event Run2Music on Madeira Drive on Saturday 30 May. Race Director John Lunt said, “Brighton Run2Music lends itself to offer children a race too just like we do for the Brighton and Hove Triathlon. It’s fantastic seeing the really young ones taking part. Multi-sport such as Scootathlon requires multiple skills and encourages determination, but most importantly, it’s an extremely fun way to keep youngsters healthy and active. It is also great seeing them get so excited about racing with their friends.” One of the parents whose son did the Scootathlon at the Triathlon said, “This was Jackson’s first multisport race at the age of eight. He had never had the opportunity before to do three sports in one and it was a real eye-opener for him. I couldn’t believe his competitive spirit. He has now found a passion for Triathlon and competed for the first time this year.” As a fully inclusive event, Run2Music offers a day of fancy dress fun, a live DJ playing music on speakers which line the course, dance acts and an entertaining warm-up on the Brighton Run2Music stage, all whilst participants run 5k, 10k or 21k chip-timed.
Scootathlon is for 3-8 year olds and comprises a scoot, a bike and a run (100m, 200m or 300m, depending on the child’s age). www.brightonrun2music.com/scootathlon
News from the council...
Vandalism and theft at Madeira Terrace Over Christmas there was some vandalism to shelter roofs with thieves stripping copper from the Victorian lift that links the A259 Marine Parade and Marine Drive. The council have been installing a temporary cover over the canopy roof of the Madeira lift to prevent further deterioration. They have also been conducting a detailed assessment of the damage before deciding on the most appropriate course of action. Council leader Nancy Platts said: "We have been focused on fundraising and works to restore the Madeira Arches, and we really appreciate the community support for these efforts. I am bitterly disappointed about the recent theft – it’s totally unaccept-
able and an unwelcome setback. Nonetheless, I will personally be looking for swift action and officers are redoubling efforts to restore this historic heritage site to its former glory." Police have appealed for anyone who saw anything suspicious to report details online or to call 101, quoting serial 315 of 26/12. Alternatively please contact Crimestoppers anonymously, telephone 0800 555 111.
