Welcome to The Kemptown Rag! We hope you enjoy the articles we have for you this month. No mention of Brexit, we promise! This month we feature Tania Webb of Marmalade, who has opened a new deli opposite her café in Eastern Road. We have an update on the return of the Kemptown Carnival, the Friends of St George’s Church have details of some great events they have organised, and Katherine Prior tells us the fascinating story of a Brighton MP from the 1860s, Henry Fawcett. If you’ve ever considered volunteering, you might be interested in our article by Nick, a volunteer with the Impetus Neighbourhood Care Scheme, who has become great friends with an elderly man he visits every week. Have a great February! The Kemptown Rag Team info@kemptownrag.co.uk www.kemptownrag.co.uk

Rock Place This photo shows the forge and living quarters of J Goble, Shoeing Smith, around 1900. Rock Place is a very old street, of the same age as New Steine, and at first consisted of stables and coachmen’s rooms. Until about 1860 it was named Rock Mews. These particular premises were for many years used by a coachbuilder until Mr Goble took possession in 1897. Thanks to the Regency Society for this image from their photographic archives, The James Gray Collection. Meet the owner of a local café and deli…
Kemptown Person… Tania Webb of Marmalade Tania Webb is the owner of Café Marmalade and Marmalade Store - a new deli – both on Eastern Road. How long have you been running Marmalade Café? We opened Marmalade Café five and a half years ago. Why did you decide to open Marmalade Store? We wanted to extend our range of products; although you can get take-away coffee from the Store we are also selling grocery items such as bread, eggs, organic milk in bottles which you can return, homemade cakes, pastas and sauces for them, cheeses, biscuits, chocolates and much more. We sold lots of hampers before Christmas; many of the foodie items are ideal if you need a gift for under £10.

What else can we buy in the store? Best of all we are selling our own ‘ready meals’ which we are making daily for customers to buy and take home for dinner. They come in 1, 2 or 4/6 person portions…unlike many supermarket ones, ours are completely natural with no added preservatives. Gio, our amazing chef, is making these plus baking incredible cakes, cinnamon buns, almond croissants…the list is endless; he surprises us daily. What is your most popular product? It’s a bit early to say but more and more people are popping in to get their supper to take home which is fab. What do you like to do when you’re not working? I always seem to have a pile of admin on my desk but if I’m not doing that then I do regular yoga or hang out with friends and family. I love cooking, although at the moment we are having rather a lot of Marmalade ready meals to test them out… which is making life much easier! I love being in Kemp Town but my other favourite place to be is Maison Marmalade, our house in France (www. maisonmarmalade.co.uk). Café Marmalade is at 237 Eastern Road, near The Spire, and Marmalade Store is opposite, in the kiosk at 238 Eastern Road. For more information, visit Café Marmalade on Facebook.

10 Trusted and Local...
Know before you go…. We think we know what you guys are thinking before you use a business for the first time. How do I know they will do a good job? Will they overcharge me? What if they mess it up and don’t put it right? Lots of natural fears kick in before stepping boldly into the unknown and using a business for the first time. The above factors are why word of mouth is such a valuable thing. A positive word from a neighbour or a family member can often make the difference as to who you choose to do a job for you but these golden nuggets of information aren’t always readily available. Well, the above factors combined with these statistics… •
91% of people have used and many use regularly online reviews when thinking about using a service or buying a product.
•
86% of people will trust an online review as much as a personal recommendation.
•
61% of people form an opinion on a business after reading between 1 and 6 reviews.*
..have led us to the development of a new website just for you – the readers of our magazines!! On this website you will be able to read reviews of local businesses that are advertising in our magazines. Each review will be verified as genuine by phone and email and will have been added to the site by a local resident. In addition to reviews each business on the site will also have a business profile page with more information about the business, links to their website, any official bodies they are members of as well as a logo to indicate that we have checked that they are insured. To add further confidence for you, the potential customer, it
will also state how long they have been advertising with us. Also each business has a page where uploaded photographs of their work are available for you to see. The website is called Trusted and Local. If a business is featured on the site their advert will carry the Trusted and Local logo on it so please look out for the logo and check out the reviews! We hope this new website helps and makes our publication even more useful for you! www.trustedandlocal.co.uk *inc.com

Our local history article from Katherine Prior at St Mary’s Church…
Brighton’s Radical MP Henry Fawcett We take it for granted today that members of parliament should live in their constituency, but that was not the case in 1865 when Henry Fawcett, Professor of Political Economy at Cambridge University, was elected as the Radical Liberal MP for Brighton. Fawcett was more interested in national and international politics than local ones, but he had a local backer in businessman Henry Willett, one of the founders of Brighton Museum. His triumph in 1865 followed an earlier defeat in 1864. Both campaigns were boisterous, bad-tempered and awash with ‘treating’ – i.e., bribing voters with entertainments and cash. Fawcett, however, who championed increased voting rights for labouring men, claimed to have spent nothing on buying votes. The newspapers of the day were unashamedly partisan. The Brighton Gazette, which had supported the Conservative candidate, frothed indignation when Fawcett was elected, dreading the prospect of the working-class ‘hordes’ of north Brighton and the ‘thieves and vagabonds of Edward Street’ outvoting the town’s respectable middle classes.

Henry Fawcett and Millicent Garrett Fawcett, by Ford Madox Brown, 1872, National Portrait Gallery, London
Fawcett seems to have thrived on the antagonism. He was a natural campaigner – very tall with a dramatic voice and a physique honed by fishing, rowing, riding and skating. He also loved to walk and remembered the path along the cliffs to Rottingdean as ‘the most charming walk in England’. Remarkably for one so active, he was completely blind, the result of a hunting accident when he was 25. ‘I knew,’ he recalled of the moment stray shot pierced his eyes, ‘that everything that was lovely in this beautiful world was for ever lost to me, but I knew at once that it was best to face the difficulty. I said at once, “I will go through life with the same aims, the same hopes, the same aspirations that I have always clung to.”’ Little stopped him; one winter when the River Cam froze over he skated at speed from Cambridge to Ely and back, his only guide being a stick held by a sighted skater. In 1867, he married a fellow radical, Millicent Garrett, whose campaign for women’s suffrage he made his own. He lost his Brighton seat to the Conservatives in 1874, but was subsequently returned as the MP for Hackney. In 1880, he was appointed Postmaster-General, in which role he introduced penny saving stamps to help poor people open a Post Office account. He died in 1884 aged only 51, and was mourned by supporters and opponents alike for his courage and integrity. Even the Brighton Gazette had kind words to say about him in death. Katherine Prior

The city’s first big race of the year...
The Grand Brighton Half Marathon 2019 The Grand Brighton Half Marathon celebrates its 29th birthday on race day, Sunday 24th February. The race is organised by The Sussex Beacon, a local HIV charity, and is their largest fundraising event each year. The Brighton Half welcomes 12,000 runners and thousands of spectators to celebrate running in the city. General race entries are already sold out but charity places may still be available. The Grand Brighton Half Marathon is the happiest half, featuring a beautiful seafront course, amazing crowd support and a flat course.
A letter from one of our readers...
Disappointment over Madeira Terraces It’s a great disappointment that the Heritage Lottery Fund have again rejected the application for a grant to restore Madeira Terraces. I do hope that 2020 will prove to be third time lucky! Anyway it’s good to know that all the events planned for this year along Madeira Drive are to go ahead especially those concerning classic cars, motor cycles and related transport.
Key facts from 2018: •
The event raised approaching £1 million for charitable causes in 2018.
•
Irish international marathon runner Paul Pollock took first place.
•
In 2018, there were 15,000 bananas at the finish line.
•
500 volunteers gave up their Sunday morning lie-in last year!
•
Fatboy Slim and BBC 6 Music presenter Matt Everitt ran for the charity Young Epilepsy and Scouting for Girls ran for the Alzheimer’s Society in 2018.
The race starts on Madeira Drive at 9.30am, heading east as far as Ovingdean, then back west to Hove Lagoon, before returning to the finish on Madeira Drive, and you can cheer for the runners at various locations in Brighton and Hove. There will be some road closures near the seafront.
I always take part in the London to Brighton Classic Car & Kit Car Run every June (not to be confused with The London to Brighton Veteran Car Run every November). Wishing everyone safe journeys for the New Year! Thank you KTR for keeping all of us posted. Yours sincerely, G.G. Weiner I.A.M., O.T.R, C.S.M.A.

This article is by Nick, a volunteer for the Impetus Neighbourhood Care Scheme...
Share your neighbourly goodwill Today I picked up Terry from his home, as I do once a week. We collected his prescription from the pharmacy and then drove to a café in Kemptown and enjoyed a pot of exquisite Chinese tea and sumptuous cake. We talked about his Pilates class, his time living in Thailand, his life as a designer, about cataloguing his photographs, documenting his personal history. He is 81 with poor health and sight, the result of a stroke, and with some mobility issues. The combined effect of these conditions has resulted in him being confined to his flat for long periods. Due to his sight he is unable to watch TV or read and his days can be long and boring which causes him to feel depressed. When I signed up as a volunteer for Impetus Neighbourhood Care Scheme, it was because I believed I could help make someone’s life a little better. Giving a couple of hours every few weeks to provide some companionship for a lonely, isolated individual seemed an inconsequential use of my
I had expected to bring some small solace into the life of the person I was assigned to visit. I had not expected to make a difference to someone’s life, neither had I expected to find a friend; “You are the highlight of my week”, “I always look forward to our outings”, “I forget about my problems when I am with you”, “You inspire me to do more” are some of the comments Terry has made about the difference our meetings have made to his life.

I have been visiting Terry for over a year now and we meet once a week, rain or shine, to get him out of his home and find somewhere to have tea where he can share, with wit, energy and passion, stories of his fascinating life. As Terry’s senses diminish and his world gets smaller it is a privilege to be able to bring some joy and happiness into his life and I value the opportunity volunteering with Impetus has given me to know and be friends with this charming and interesting man.
