Kemptown Person...Dan Borgonon Dan Borgonon lives in Sudeley Street and launched the Kemptown Kinema film club in October.

How long have you lived in Kemptown?

Five years, first in Eaton Place, now in Sudeley St. Why did you decide to start Kemptown Kinema?

Kemptown has a rich cinematic past, but sadly through war damage or redevelopment the cinemas have all disappeared. I wanted to start a film club where the local community could come together and celebrate a shared love of cinema. The idea is to screen films in different venues around the local area collaborating with others who are keen to get involved.

I’ve also been saddened by the growing homelessness across the city and was looking for a way I could help.

I figured this was a way I could raise money, donating the profits to charity whilst trying to keep the ticket price low and accessible to all.

How did your launch go?

St Mary’s Carol Service The Service of Nine Lessons and Carols is a beautiful, reflective service. This year the choir of St Mary's will be joined again by our friends from the Ovingdean Choral Society, conducted by Gregory Moore, with Andrew Beaizley on the organ. Traditional readings from the King James Bible and candles galore. Wine and Christmas nibbles afterwards.

Ghost Stories for Christmas

Family Magical Winter Wonderland Not quite Kemptown, but this sounds like a fantastic event. The Village at Brighton Marina will be transformed into a world of fantasy this Christmas. Visitors will be able to walk through a tree-lined route, through the wardrobe and into a Frozen world. Children can interact with princesses, snowmen, lions, fauns and ice queens and dress up as their favourite character. There will be snow machines, stalls, plus rides for the children (small fee required), as well as onstage performances. Free, no booking required.

An appeal to help people in fuel poverty...

Brighton Lions Club - Project Wenceslas Brighton Lions Club are once again launching Project Wenceslas, a campaign to help combat fuel poverty.

People who receive the annual Winter Fuel Payment and feel they do not need it are invited to donate the amount to Brighton Lions.

Excess winter deaths in Brighton & Hove are slightly higher than both England and the South-East. People in difficulty will be contacting agencies such as Age UK who will refer them to Brighton Lions. Direct applications will not be accepted to ensure all the donated money goes to the people who really need it. Brighton Lions will make payments direct to the energy supply companies, not the individual beneficiaries, whose details will not be known to the Lions.

“Last winter we spent more than £9,000,” said Pete Dilloway, President of Brighton Lions Club. “That was an increase of £1,000 on the previous year so there really is a need even in this, the so-called affluent South-East. One of those we helped last winter had been admitted to hospital with hypothermia having been too scared of running up bills to use enough heating.”

News from the council...

New electric vehicle charging points More than 200 new electric vehicle charging points are set to be installed across the city over the next few months.

Following a tender process, the council has appointed Electric Blue to install and maintain the electric vehicle charge points. The project is being funded with £300,000 from the Office of Low Emissions, and £100,000 from Electric Blue.

The 207 new points will include 30 in areas with high parking demand where the council are proposing mandatory Electric Charging spaces, many of them in response to requests from residents who own or are thinking of buying electric vehicles but have no offstreet parking available.

Lamp post chargers Most of the charging points will be installed on lamp posts and will provide a full charge for vehicles parked overnight. These will be installed by January next year.

A mobile phone app showing the locations of all points in the city and whether they are in use will be available to download.

Drivers will pay 28p per kilowatt hour to charge their vehicles at the public points. The fees will go towards the operating and maintenance of the points. The council will receive 1p per kw/h in year one increasing to 4p per kw/h in year four.

All the public charge points will be powered by renewable energy in line with the council’s commitment when it joined the Oxford Charter in 2018.

The council has also been awarded £86,265 research funding from Innovate UK for a trial of smart network extenders, which increase the number of vehicles which can be charged at each point.

Reducing pollution Councillor Anne Pissaridou, chair of the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee, said: “Many drivers have told us that they would consider buying an electric vehicle, but have been deterred by the lack of street charging points. We hope that the introduction of these new lamp post chargers will make electric vehicles more attractive for motorists, and help us to continue our work to reduce pollution and improve air quality in the city.”

I have a theory that most heart-attacks occur in early January, when people open their credit card statements and see a figure approaching the National Debt of a small country but without the possibility of any assistance from the International Monetary Fund.

You may decide to escape this financial stress and worry for a while and go to the company Christmas party. Obviously this is the ideal time to drink excessively and tell managerial types where the company’s going wrong. I don’t know what the rates of success and promotion are on this, but I’d hazard a guess at very low. The Christmas do is also the perfect place to really let your hair down and pick a fight with that idiot who’s had it coming all year.
