With so much uncertainty at the moment due to the coronavirus, there is a high possibility that some of the events and classes mentioned in our April issue may not go ahead, so please do check before attending. The Brighton Marathon has already been postponed until September. We still have all our usual articles for you. Our featured local person is illustrator Ella Morris and we have an update on the council’s plans for Black Rock. Let’s hope for some bright weather so that if everything else is cancelled we can at least get out for a walk! St Anne’s Church This church was built in Burlington Street by Cheeseman & Co in 1862, the foundation stone being laid by the Vicar of Brighton on 16 June of that year. The church closed in 1983 following the amalgamation of the parish with St George’s. It was demolished in 1986 and replaced by St Anne’s Court sheltered housing. Date of photo: March 1984.

Meet a local illustrator…
Kemptown Person… Ella Morris Illustrator Ella Morris lives in Kemptown. She designed a public artwork to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community for last year’s Pride celebrations, commissioned by Brighton Dome as a temporary mural on their New Road hoardings. How long have you lived in Kemptown? I’ve lived in Kemptown for two and a half years with my partner and our two cats. But been in Brighton overall for 10, as I moved here for university and never wanted to leave. What do you like about the area? I love living in Kemptown as it’s far enough out of the city centre that it feels calmer and has a less frantic energy, but still has lots going on and a good community feel. I really appreciate living close to local independent businesses such as Seed and Sprout and Kemptown Bookshop. You can often find me having a vegan breakfast at Necot or a pie and a pint in the Barley Mow! Tell us about your art... My style resembles children’s illustration but for an adult audience. I love bold clean lines, bright colours and creating interesting characters and beguiling scenes. Drawing has always been therapeutic for me, a way of finding empowerment in the parts of my identity which have always felt uncomfortable, which is why I often use my art to communicate ideas on identity politics, female empowerment and queerness. Who are your own favourite artists? I’m not a fan of subtlety so I’ve always loved really maximalist artwork. I’m very drawn to art which is jam packed full of symbolism and stories - hence why I love classical Renaissance art, but also more illustra-
tive artists like Beryl Cook! I’m also very influenced by artwork that’s fantastical and horrifying like Hieronymous Bosch and Francis Bacon. Locally Mike Levy is a Brighton artist whose style I really love, and never fails to put a smile on my face. Where can we see your work? Follow me on Instagram! @hardfemmeriot and on my website: elladraws.com Thank you!

News from the Kemp Town Society…
Kemp Town Estate heritage information boards Five information boards outlining the history and heritage of the Kemp Town Estate were installed in March. Funded by a generous legacy from former resident the late Alex Bruce and designed by Vanessa Minns, four of the boards have been fixed to the railings surrounding the Enclosures in Sussex Square and Lewes Crescent; a fifth will be on the Esplanade, outside the cottages originally built for the Estate Constable and Gardener. Thomas Read Kemp, MP for Lewes, initiated work on his grand design of 105 houses and gardens in 1823. The Estate was finally completed by Thomas Cubitt in 1850. Kemp’s aim was to attract the great and good to the growing resort of Brighton, made fashionable by the presence of the Prince Regent at The Royal Pavilion. Many illustrious former residents are listed on the boards, which link to the educational community project Who’s Been Living in My House website, a fascinating archive of lives lived here over nearly two centuries: www.kemptownestatehistories. com The boards were to have been launched at a ceremony on 28 March by the writer and broadcaster Sir Anthony Seldon, Vice Chancellor of the University of Buckingham, former head of Brighton and Wellington Colleges, and sometime resident of the estate. His bold and controversial vision for the future of Brighton, Brave New City, was published in 2002. Sir Anthony is now severing a link with Brighton that has lasted 23 years.

News from the council…
Next steps for Black Rock... Following consultation in November the council have submitted a planning application for a package of works at Black Rock, including the renovation of the much-loved Grade II Old Reading Room and Temple as part of the creation of a new activity hub, that will functionally serve the temporary site to encourage use and activity, and also form part of the longer-term rejuvenation of the area. The proposed plans include getting the site ready for future redevelopment by the expansion of the site with a new realigned free-standing sea wall structure, serving to improve sea defences through an enhanced design based upon the latest flood risk projections. The plans propose improvements to access for pedestrians and cyclists to the Black Rock site including enhanced means of access to the Marina, beach, Undercliff Walk, Kemp Town Slopes and Madeira Drive in the short term. Long term benefits include infrastructure improvements for Duke’s Mound at its junctions with Marine Parade and Marine Drive with the potential for a bus route. Within the application there are plans for ecological enhancement through the clearance of shrub, replanting and landscaping within the Kemp Town Slopes and the creation of an accessible beach boardwalk from Duke’s Mound to Black Rock. There will also be the planting and relocating of vegetated shingle from the Local Wildlife Site to create an ecology trail along the beach to the west. The proposed replacement ecological area will result in a biodiversity net gain supporting the council’s commitment to becoming carbon neutral by 2030.
In November 2019, two drop-in consultation events were held in Kemp Town and Brighton Marina, attended by 225 people, with overall support for the project. The feedback has also resulted in the inclusion of a temporary BMX 'pump track' encouraging residents to try different sport activities in the city. Councillor Nancy Platts, Leader of the Council, said: “The plans being put forward for Black Rock are a great example of the council’s work to revitalise our seafront. I know a lot of people living in the east of the city are passionate about seeing this area rejuvenated. I am really excited by these plans and hope others are too.” To see the full plans or to comment, go to planningapps.brighton-hove.gov.uk/onlineapplications/ and search for planning application BH2020/00442. The proposed plans are subject to the planning process so should be considered provisional until approved. A decision on the proposals is expected in early June.

are looking for plants that thrive in dry air, do well in poor light in winter, and survive bright sunshine in summer. The two featured in the image are Pelargoniums (left) and Peace Lily (right). Both did well over winter and responded to a little care and attention.
13
The Peace Lily arrived here several years ago and was initially kept in a bedroom with minimal care and dried out completely. Yet within days of being watered the leaves bounced back with their soft, vibrant green colour. Adding some plant fertiliser to its water made a big difference with its wonderful white flowers soon appearing. The Pelargoniums, also known as flowering Geraniums, display a magnificent deep red with hints of purple flowers. The whole plant has a velvety feel. It is lovely to have plants grouped together, but it’s important to consider whether they are compatible. The two plants here are displayed in an easy-to-move small pebble tray. Each has its own base so they can be watered separately and are not left standing in water. The Pelargoniums are prone to mould so excessive moisture needs to be curtailed. My plan is to let the pebble tray water evaporate so it is just damp, and always water the plants from the base upwards until the soil is just moist. The Peace Lily, on the other hand, has shiny leaves which are ideal for the shedding of rain showers that frequent its natural rain forest habitat.
These two plants aren’t the most compatible tray mates when it comes to watering requirements although this can be overcome by lifting the Peace Lily out for its daily mist. And although they look nice together for now, once the sun gets really strong the lily will have to be moved into shade or the curtains will need to be drawn in the brightest part of the day. On 27 February, all three political parties came together in a show of unity and proposed a joint amendment that offers additional funding to restore Madeira Terraces.
Insects are inextricably intertwined with our fate and that of the planet: as a food source for birds and mammals, as pollinators for food production, as waste recyclers and as soil improvers; their loss is proving catastrophic.
Within this amendment, extra funding of £200,000 a year has been dedicated to the project. In the first year, financial year 2020/2021, this £200,000 will be split into two pots for early planning work. In the year 2021/2022, the £200,000 dedicated to the Madeira Terraces project will go towards borrowing a further £4.3m for the project. The final part of the funding, possibly up to an extra £6.7m capital funding for Madeira Terrace, is dependent on making commercial investments in the city. The council have now awarded the contract for the architects that will lead the design team for the first phase of restoration to Purcell Architecture Ltd. Council leader Councillor Nancy Platts said: "The appointment of the architect is a positive step towards restoring the Madeira Terrace arches. Purcell have an excellent track record in restoration and I'm delighted that they are going to work on Madeira Terrace, helping to bring the backdrop of our city to life again.”
We call them ‘pests’ and we use ‘pesticides’ to protect our plants. Our supermarket and garden centre shelves are filled with these poisons, killing not only the ‘pest’ but killing bees, other insects, contaminating the soil, water, fish, humans and other animals. In France these are all banned for amateur use. Stop buying them and they will stop stocking them. Let’s make our gardens a refuge for nature. Save our insects by signing this petition: www. pan-uk.org/take-pesticide-products-off-supermarketshelves/
