Meet a local resident who’s lived in the area since 1967...

Kemptown Person – Judith Burn Judith Burns lives in Upper St James’s Street. She is one of the organisers of the new Kemptown Community Market in St Mary’s Church Hall. How long have you lived in Kemptown? Since 1967 when my parents moved from Saltdean where I grew up in my very early years, and my father was the local GP there. Then he went into private practice as a back specialist for many years in Royal Crescent, where we lived at number 14. How has the area changed over the years?

It has in some ways and not in others. It was always incredibly tolerant, it attracted real characters so in that way it’s the same now as in the 60s and 70s. There were always lots of famous people living here but nobody bothered them. Lots of the grand houses are now flats, the Royal Crescent and Neville House hotels included. Parking wasn’t as bad then, people had a bit more respect for others, they didn’t flaunt the rules or laws. It was cleaner and people kept outside their shops and restaurants clean. A few years ago we went to welcome a new neighbour into a local shop in the area, who snapped, “We’re not here to make friends, only profit.” Those kind of people were never around in the old days, but hopefully they’re few and far between nowadays. What is your background? I went to Brighton & Hove High School from kindergarten to sixth form, then Brighton Technical College to get the Personal Assistants’ Course, then after UCL I worked in London in music agency and management, PR and marketing. I was taught by some amazingly talented people. Then I came back to Brighton in the mid-1980s, worked for my father in his medical practice in Royal Crescent, and then opened my own business and secretarial service, called The Home Office, in 1991 at the place where I still live 26 years later! My business was a great way to meet lots of locals; I worked for many of those characters, as well as the more well known ones such as comedian Pete McCarthy and Dexy’s singer Kevin Rowland. I did photocopying for Eric Sykes when he used to stay in Marine Gardens if he was appearing at the Theatre Royal, typed film scripts for a Hollywood star, sent faxes for a famous actress about the Oscars.

ns bric-a-brac one month, more food the next. Just turn up and see what’s on offer, have a piece of cake and a coffee and a chat. How is it going?

It was a star studded area but the great thing about Kemptown was (and still is) that nobody gave (and gives) anyone a second glance. When I showed Noel Gallagher round my parents’ house in Royal Crescent we sat on the balcony and talked about Kemptown; I could see that he “got it”, he genuinely liked the area. It doesn’t matter who you are, you either fit in or you don’t (and I was more impressed by his Blue Peter badge!). Why did you set up the Kemptown Community Market? I had remembered the old community market at St Anne’s Hall in St George’s Road. It was an eclectic mix of traders, from local and fresh produce (local eggs for instance) to ephemera. There was a man who sold military stuff, and someone with coins and stamps in plastic albums. Some people would sell just one thing. You could browse on a Saturday morning and buy almost anything; it was like a village fete every week. I realised that we’ve lost that community spirit in Kemptown and our intention is to try and restore it; get to know your neighbours over a cup of tea, bring in good quality local traders and a local charity or two (Sussex Beacon at the moment).

We’re doing well but we will always welcome more visitors! It’s been great to see lots of locals coming back every couple of weeks, with a list of what they want to buy. Our Facebook page gives people a list of traders a few days beforehand, so they know who’ll be there. I put someone in touch this morning on Facebook with one of our chutney makers to put an order in to be collected at the next fair. And we’ve got tourists and foreign students coming in too, buying little presents and gifts to take home with them. We have more and more enquiries every week for tables, and we’re looking at expanding. We’ve gone for more unusual traders because we need to stand out from a supermarket or high street shopping experience but we’re conscious of becoming a destination that helps other traders in Kemptown on a Saturday, rather than people just flocking to the Lanes or Churchill Square. There’s so much to do in Kemptown. Making sure we had a charity or two at every fair has been really important too, to give back to the community. We have plans for more diverse markets and fairs this year and next. And we need to give a shout out to Father Andrew and Katherine who have been a huge support and have made St Mary’s into a really community spirited centre. They “get it”, they get what Kemptown is about. For more information on the Kemptown Community Market, or if you would like a table at a future market, visit the Facebook page: fb.me/kemptowncommunitymarket or email: kcmbrighton@gmail.com

Our regular local history article from Katherine Prior at St Mary’s Church...

The City of Hereford Inn The City of Hereford Inn stood on the corner of Upper St James’s Street and Upper Bedford Street. It was demolished in 1971 to make way for an unlovely triangle of grass on the edge of Hampshire Court – a sad fate for a pub with a rich history. The pub was built in 1810 on what was then Crescent Street; it wasn’t called Upper St James’s Street until the 1820s. At the time, there were few buildings on the north side of this curving roadway and Upper Bedford Street didn’t exist at all, so the City of Hereford stood as an isolated, imposing building with fields to the east and north. The developer and first landlord appears to have been George Suggers, who later built three tenements called Suggers’ Court (aka Sugar’s Court) in Upper Bedford Street. In the 1820s he handed over the Hereford to John Bishop, who ran it until his death in 1867, aged 63. Like Suggers, Bishop was a man of some standing in Brighton. His pub spreads were legendary and, along with celebrations for friendly societies and trade bodies, he hosted, in 1853, the thirtieth anniversary dinner of the ‘Glorious Sand Cause’.

The demolition of the City of Hereford Inn, Upper St James’s Street, 1971

This was a rambunctious gathering of local builders to celebrate a legal victory in 1823 permitting them to take sand and stones from Brighton beach to use for construction. Today we might be tempted to call it the Bungaroosh Bash. In common with other large public houses, the City of Hereford also hosted public auctions and inquests. The inquests are a sad roll call of the accidents and tragedies of the era: chloroform overdoses, petticoats catching fire, falls from ladders, and the pitiful death of Bishop’s own daughter, aged 8, who fell down an uncovered well and drowned. These snippets of the Hereford’s history can now be retrieved thanks to the digitization of newspapers, and surely the best of them is the tale of feline misfortune that befell landlord Arthur Barr in 1874. Roused one night by a suspected burglar, he was set upon in his cellar by a furious tabby cat. The enraged animal seems to have severed a vein in his arm before his barman, rushing to his aid and ‘exasperated by the scene … literally squeezed the cat to death’. Unsurprisingly, as a variant of ‘Man bites Dog’ news, reports of the City of Hereford’s FEROCIOUS CAT ATTACK appeared in newspapers up and down the country. Katherine Prior

The latest column from Paul Thomas...

Bond. Premium Bond. The first ever premium bond prize draw took place 60 years ago on 1 June 1957. They were first on sale from 1 November 1956 and £5 million worth were sold on that first day, equivalent to £114,884,010 today taking inflation into account. Seen as a “safe gamble” because you can always get your capital back, the maximum investment at the time was £500 with a top prize of £1,000. Today the maximum investment is £50,000 and the top prize £1,000,000. Each £1 bond has a 30,000 to 1 chance of winning. Although each individual bond is £1, they now require a minimum £100 investment. The winning bond numbers are drawn by ERNIE, the electronic random number indicator equipment, originally invented by the code breakers at Bletchley Park. It may be heresy to talk of Liverpool football club when Brighton and Hove Albion are about to ascend to the Premier League, but Liverpool were officially founded

125 years ago on 3 June 1892 and Albion will be sure to play against them in the coming season. Also on 3 June, though in 1937, Prince Edward, formerly King Edward before abdicating, married Wallis Simpson in France on what many see as a dark day for the royal family. Legendary wit and writer Dorothy Parker died on 7 June 1967. Among her poems was Resume: Razors pain you; rivers are damp; acids stain you and drugs cause cramp. Guns aren’t lawful; nooses give; gas smells awful; you might as well as live. She co-wrote the film A Star is Born in 1937, which is being remade with Stefani Germanotta aka Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper in a directorial debut by Cooper for a 2018 release.

The general election is on 8th June and it can’t be long before voting is done by an app or email. In Australian elections voting is mandatory with a fine of A$20 for non-voters leading to a 94% turnout. Even though there are big issues at stake for the UK, the turnout is not expected to match that of its former colony. Amazing ideas can originate in the bath. John Shepherd-Barron devised the world’s first cash-point machine/ATM while soaking and it was installed by Barclays in Enfield, North London, on 27 June 1967. The first user was On the Buses actor Reg Varney. Have a bath and change the world…

The latest column from Catherine Considine...

The First Fire “Where’s Neil?” I ask. “He’ll be back soon,” someone says but I am distracted by a small dog who has just trotted over to greet me. He does a little dog shake, flapping his ears and powdering my dark jeans with builder’s dust. “Neil said he’d forgotten something.” “Furniture perhaps.” I say. “Nah, not furniture,” the man replies, “He said it was something important.” It is my favourite time of the evening, when the sun hangs low and heavy, its work nearly done. Molten rays stream through a wide bay window, filling the room with a soft milky light. There are about ten of us. We hug our hellos and share cold beers from shopping bags. We lean on a wide, round bar that circles the far corner of the room. It is covered with plastic sheeting and our elbows make a gentle squelch as we move to avoid areas marked with cardboard signs declaring “wet paint” or “not secured”.

There is something clandestine about the gathering and purposeful, but for now we make small observations, claiming the space for our own. “I think I’ll like there, at the big table,” I say, nodding towards an empty space. “I can watch the world go by.” “I’m going to enjoy the bar seats,” someone else suggests. “Imagine when the oven is fired.” The wood burning pizza oven, a domed beast that dominates the bar, is the reason for our gathering. The UK’s leading bath Tonight is the first fire. Our friend Neil has found resurfacing, re-enamelling &a permanent home for his food truck business restoration company. Woodbox Pizza - right here in Kemptown. Everyone here has been involved: painted a wall, varnished a floor, put up a shelf – it is my favourite sort of Kemptown venture. A soft click as the door opens announces Neil’s return. “Sorry,” he says. “I couldn’t start without this.” His arms are wrapped around a huge pot of verdant basil. Tonight we’re not bothered by the dusty floor, or the wires that hang from the wall. We don’t care that there is nowhere to sit. Tonight all we want is a crisp, sourdough base and a puffy speckled crust; we are excited about rich tomato sauce and oozysoft mozzarella, scented with fresh, peppery basil. Tonight we are interested in fire and the taste of a dream coming true. Woodbox Pizza opens in June, on Paston Place. Catherine Considine

Two new exhibitions at the Royal Pavilion & Museums...

Jane Austen by the Sea - 17 June 2017 - 8 January 2018 Ackermann’s seafront walking dress, 1818, © University of Sussex

A new display at the Royal Pavilion will explore Jane Austen’s relationship with coastal towns, and life in Brighton during her time, to mark the bicentenary of her death. Jane Austen by the Sea will look at the seaside context of Austen’s plots and paint a picture of Brighton in the early 1800s, when it was a fashionable ‘watering place’ featured in novels like Pride and Prejudice.  Although there is no clear evidence that Austen visited Brighton she included it in several of her works. The display will reassess her relationship with the town in the light of a long-term misunderstanding, arising from a hand-written letter of 1799. She was misquoted as saying that she dreaded the idea of going to Brighton, when she was actually referring to Bookham in Surrey. The display will present George IV’s personal, specially-bound copy of Emma, a mourning brooch containing a lock of Jane Austen’s hair, one of her music books, and important rare manuscripts and letters, as well as a three-volume manuscript copy

This article comes from St George’s Church...

A Community Nursery in Kemp Town Several years ago, we were in a dilemma – we had some space where the church and Crypt community centre could expand, but what should we do with it? It would have been easy to develop the space and rent it out as offices, but we were not convinced that such a way forward would really be serving the communities in which we live and work. So, we asked local people, and the city council, how we might best use the land and opportunity which we had. What were in short supply were nursery places! Young parents needed a facility where they could leave their children, knowing that they would be looked after in a safe environment, and that would enable them to take work and provide an income which would improve their families’ standard of living. If we had a green open space, with the ability to create new tailor-made buildings, that would have been perfect, but that was not available. We took what we had and did the best job we could – and I don’t think we have done too badly.

We have a beautiful space, with great caring staff, and some brilliant and supportive families.

“We Pride Ourselves on Our Customer Care” Established since 1986. Ladies That Do! Domestic Agency is a tailor made service to accommodate client’s individual needs. Our uniformed staff are vetted by us and fully insured, giving our client’s peace of mind and security. Our offices are operated by friendly, experienced staff, ready to discuss your personal requirements. Regular Cleaning

The original nursery had two rooms, one for babies and the other for toddlers and pre-school children. We have been so successful that we have added an extra room, so that we have a babies’ room, a toddler room, and a pre-school room! We now have the equivalent of 23 full-time places! As a nursery, we are Ofsted regulated and we have a full DBS screening system in place. That means that the young people who come to the nursery have a proper curriculum, which will allow them a good start at nursery school, and they have a safe environment in which to grow and flourish! Far more important is the grounding young people get in socialising – learning to live, and play with the people around them.

An annual event in the city...

Brighton Naked Bike Ride to celebrate our ‘One World’ Brighton’s World Naked Bike Ride will return to the city streets on Sunday 11 June. This year participants will celebrate a ‘One World’ theme – uniting the global protest’s aims of empowering cyclists, campaigning against oil dependency and pushing for an increase in safe, sustainable transport. Nick Sayers, ride co-organiser, said: “From Brexit to Trump, recent politics have been tumultuous and divisive, and are threatening commitments to protect human rights and the environment. The World Naked Bike Ride is a reminder that issues such as clean air, a stable climate and the right of cyclists to safe, shared road space affect people all over the world, and are as crucial as ever. It’s also great fun, and this year just happens to be the 200th anniversary of the invention of the bicycle! Something well worth celebrating.”

Truly a global protest, Brighton will join over 15 rides in the UK, several across Europe, and over 50 worldwide. Although the ride is free to attend, it relies on donations to cover costs. A crowdfunding support campaign has been set up at http://youcaring.com/ BrightonNakedBikeRideFundraiser. The ride will assemble from 12 noon at The Level and will roll off at 1.30pm, passing Brighton Palace Pier, the i360, Hove Lawns, Churchill Square and the Royal Pavilion, and finishing at Black Rock naturist beach. Participants are encouraged to decorate their bikes and paint their bodies with protest slogans. The dress code is “as bare as you dare”. A post-ride party from 6.30pm until late will be hosted by the Volks Club on Madeira Drive near the pier. There will be food, local live musicians, bike cocktails, dancing and a raffle. Dress code: pants! For further information, visit worldnakedbikeride.org/brighton An appeal for local memorabilia...

Can you spare a little time to befriend an older person...?

Local news...

Time to Talk Befriending

Defibrillator at Yellowave

Time to Talk Befriending is a local charity that helps older people who feel lonely, invisible and forgotten to “feel like they are living again” and “no longer feel trapped inside their own home”.

Yellowave Beach Sports on Madeira Drive have installed a life-saving defibrillator. It is located outside, so that it can be used on anyone in the area who has a cardiac arrest.

If you can spare an hour of your time every fortnight and would like to make a positive difference in someone’s life through befriending, we would love to hear from you. To find out more please contact one of the Time to Talk Befriending team today on 01273 737710 or email volunteers@timetotalkbefriending.org.uk. www.timetotalkbefriending.org.uk/brighton-hove/ volunteering We look forward to hearing from you!

The defibrillator can be used to jump-start their heart and save their life, and no training is needed to use it.

The machine was donated by the Sussex Heart Charity and staff at Yellowave have raised money to pay for its maintenance. A great chance to try a new sport...
