QUIZ QUESTION ONE:
LOCAL FIVEWAYS BUSINESS www.stclairbuilders.co.uk
The name for which clever and playful mammal stems from the Greek word for womb?
fiveways Brighton Dome & Festival want your stories...
MEMORIES NEEDED FOR HERITAGE PROJECT Were you mesmerised by Pink Floyd’s first performance of Dark Side of the Moon? Did you sneak into David Bowie’s infamous 1973 Ziggy Stardust gig as a teenager? Have you got a special memory of taking part in Brighton Festival children’s parade? Or did you ever perform on the Brighton Dome stage? Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival are asking the public to record their memorable stories as part of a new heritage project, I Was There. The interviews and collection of memorabilia will be archived for future generations, and selected stories will be presented in an online exhibition and feature in a public programme of tours and talks at Brighton Dome. Kate Richardson, Participatory Interpretation Manager at Brighton Dome, said: “We’d love to hear people’s unique recollections or from anyone who has a special connection to Brighton Dome and Brighton Festival – whether it was 50 years ago or more recently.
Patti Smith at Brighton Dome, 2012; photo by Jerry Webb
We’re keen to speak to audience members recounting how they felt about seeing their favourite artist or witnessing a sporting event; performers and participants who took part in a show, as well as former employees who can tell us what it was like working behind the scenes.” Since being converted into a performance venue 150 years ago, Brighton Dome’s three stages have seen a dazzling array of illustrious artists and musical icons such as Patti Smith, Beyoncé, David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix, as well as hosting tea dances, wrestling matches and graduation ceremonies. And since 1967, Brighton Festival has brought thousands of international artists to the city. The National Lottery Heritage Fund is supporting the oral history project as part of their contribution towards the refurbishment of Brighton Dome’s Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre. Sussex-based community arts and heritage organisation, Strike a Light – Arts & Heritage, are delivering the project with the help of a team of volunteers who will be trained to collate audio interviews from participants. Nicola Benge, Project Manager at Strike a Light, added: “Capturing individual experiences provides a valuable insight into the social history of the arts in Brighton & Hove. We’d like to record memories from a broad crosssection of communities and age groups to reflect how the arts and these historically important venues have had an impact on people’s lives.” Interested participants should email: strikealight@rocketmail.com or visit Brighton Dome’s website for further information: https://brightondome.org/about/history_heritage/

QUESTION THREE:
Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha, is located in which country?
fiveways Some advice from Ben Barden of Bardens Gas Services...
KEEPING YOUR BOILER HEALTHY What are the main problems you see with boilers during the winter? Lots of problems with boilers during the winter months are caused by pressure problems. In order for your boiler to maintain the correct temperature it must have sufficient water pressure to pump the water away from the boiler. Customers should ensure that the pressure when the system is cold on the boiler should be between 1 and 1.5 bar. If the pressure is below this then you can re-pressurise your boiler yourself following your 11 manufacturer’s instructions or alternatively call Bardens Gas Services. Another issue is having too much pressure which may require removal of water or indicate a potential issue inside your boiler which will need investigation. How can we keep our boiler running efficiently during cold weather? Modern day condensing appliances will work as efficiently as they can. We have a tendency in the winter months to put a thermostat up very high, then we get too hot and subsequently turn it back down again.
Bardens Gas Services Local family run business Specialising in the service and repair of all gas appliances (including gas fires) Plumbing jobs and boiler installations also undertaken. With 25 years experience in the industry
This is an inefficient way of running your heating system as you are paying to heat the room up and then subsequently wasting that heat by allowing the temperature to drop again. My advice is to keep your thermostat at constant temperature. If you have thermostatic controls on your radiators then adjust these controls to enable the room to have a more comfortable temperature. Older non-condensing appliances are still efficient but require more observations from the homeowner and adjustments. My advice is to reduce the temperature of your boiler - using more of the heat more of the time is a much better and efficient way to run your heating system. Is it best to keep your heating on low at all times or turn it off for a few hours during the day? I advise the customer to run the heating system when the customer is in the house and not to leave it on low-level constantly. If you leave it on low, the energy you’re using by keeping it on constantly is probably slightly higher than the energy you are using turning it on and off.

fiveways An exciting project to restore Brighton’s last remaining tram...
The Brighton Half ...
BRIGHTON TRAM...
BRIGHTON MARATHON
Brighton Corporation Tramways ran for 38 years from 1901 until 1939. Of the 116 tram cars built by the corporation at their Lewes Road Depot, only one, number 53, still survives. Number 53 was built in 1937 and, after only two years of running, was sold to a West Sussex farm where she remained until the 1970s. For the next three decades she sat in a shed, untouched, until in 2010 the Brighton Tram 53 Society was formed to restore her. The restoration of Tram 53 has been moving ahead at a dizzying pace over the past year and is now awaiting the completion of many years of hard work by the team of volunteers and fundraisers. Currently the tram body is awaiting the 13 fitting of two staircases and the installation of the electric lighting; plus the fitting of the individually sponsored top deck seating and handrails. When this is completed the car will begin to look as it would have done in 1938. We have two 90+ year old members who remember the working trams, and have inspected and approved the work so far!! When the car is finished, with seats, lighting, window curtains etc, the next big and expensive phase is to overhaul/ restore the truck, wheels, electric motor and braking systems. This work will need funding; please help if you can. The Brighton Tram 53 Society is in discussion with possible providers of venues, where the tram could be run for all to see and enjoy, while learning about the important part trams played in helping Brighton to grow into the great city we have today.
The Grand Brighton Half Marathon celebrates its 30th anniversary on Sunday 23rd February. To mark the big birthday there will be a special medal, runners from the race’s history will be returning and there will be some new race ambassadors, including Norman Cook. The race starts on Madeira Drive at 9.30am and you can cheer for the runners at various locations. There will be some road closures near the seafront. For more information, visit www.brightonhalfmarathon

QUIZ QUESTION FIVE:
Which popular book and film begins with a small group fleeing in the night from their home, Sandleford?
fiveways This month we have caught up with Mr Kocer who is the owner of the new Piano Café in Fiveways…
NEW TO FIVEWAYS...PIANO CAFÉ
We see you have opened up a new café in Fiveways. What type of café is it? We are a Turkish café and tea room. 90% of our breakfast menu comes from Turkey, giving our customers a taste of real Turkish food.
Why did you choose Fiveways as a location for your café? Good question! As it happens, it was a random choice. Myself and my business partner were driving around Brighton one day and we saw that the shop had a sign for rent on it. Next we met up with our lovely landlord and decided to create our café and start our adventure here in Fiveways. What is your philosophy regarding providing good value food for local families? We are a small café with limited seating. Normally cafés and restaurants put their prices up to increase their profits. We are a little bit different as our primary aim is to bring tasty food at reasonable prices to the food industry. We recognise that it is too pricey to eat out nowadays. At The Piano Café it is possible for a family of four to eat at the café for under £30. Do you serve vegan food? Yes, we do have some vegan items on our menu. We do offer a vegan panini, vegan pasta, vegan handmade chocolate cake and vegan milkshake as well as the vegan biscuits served with every coffee. Have you got a website where we can see your menu? Yes, our website is pianocafebrighton.co.uk. We are also on Facebook: pianocafebrighton. Thank you! Editor’s Note: The breakfast pictured above was mine! Really healthy and extensive - set me up for the whole day!!

fiveways Lee Smikle of Fiveways tells us about his new dance space...
NEW DANCE STUDIO – SMIKLE SPACE Professional dancer Lee Smikle has recently opened Smikle Space on Third Avenue, Hove – a new dance studio with classes for children, young people and adults. What is your background? Originally from Yorkshire, I started dancing at the late age of 19. I didn’t even know that dance could be a potential career choice. A chance visit to my local theatre led me to get a part-time job there where I got to see live theatre, musicals and dance regularly. I saw acclaimed companies like Northern Ballet and Alvin Ailey. I signed up for ballet classes, and the rest is history. I trained at the Rambert School of Ballet & Contemporary Dance and have performed in operas (Glyndebourne), pop videos (Kylie Minogue) and movies (Billy Elliot). My main performance work, however, was with Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures, touring internationally in shows like Swan Lake, The Car Man and Nutcracker. I later became a resident artist and producer of the New Adventures Choreographer Award (NACA). Teaching soon became my main passion, and I retired from performing in 2007. I was the lead dance teacher at the Laban Centre For Advanced Training (CAT) 200714. In January 2010, I founded Shoreditch Youth Dance Company (SYD) and later Smikle Project (2011). Why did you decide to set up a dance studio? It’s been a long-time ambition of mine to have my own studio space. I love teaching, so creating a home for the work I do with young dancers was the dream. I moved to Brighton & Hove in 2017 and launched SYD:B Creative Dance Academy in September 2018. SYD:B has established itself as the go-to creative hub for many local young dancers, ready to take their dance training to the next level. With SYD celebrating their tenth anniversary this year, it seemed like the perfect time to open Smikle Space.
Tell us about the studio and what sort of classes are available? There is a fully sprung dance floor with dance vinyl flooring, a kitchen, lounge area and a stunning photography infinity wall. We do classes and courses for children, young people and adults in: Creative Dance, Contemporary Dance, Ballet, Flow Fit, Boys Only, Intensives, workshops and private lessons. You can also hire out the space for rehearsals and events. Current offers: ‘First Class Free’ and ‘25% off all courses’. Smikle Space is at 5 King’s Mews, Third Avenue, Hove BN3 2PA. fiveways A family show at Exeter Street Hall…
PUGS OF THE FROZEN NORTH... Well-loved children’s book “Pugs of the Frozen North” by Philip Reeve and Sarah McIntyre has been adapted for the stage and will be performed at Exeter Street Hall on 16th and 23rd February. The Race to the Top of the World! It comes around once in a lifetime, and the prize? Your heart’s desire. Shen and Sika can’t resist the chance to win, but competition is fierce. The path to victory is littered with snow trolls, sea monsters, and a gang of particularly hungry yetis. But Shen and Sika have something the other contestants don’t have. Actually, they have 66 other things - pugs to be exact. That’s a 264 paw-powered sled. Let the race begin! 19 This is a unique, hands-on collaboration between the authors and the award-winning theatre company The Foundry Group in association with acclaimed children’s company Bard & Troubadour. With songs by Brian Mitchell (composer of The Ministry of Biscuits, co-written with Philip Reeve), a cast including Bard & Troubadour’s Amy Sutton and Joshua Crisp, designs by Reeve and McIntyre themselves, and a chance for younger audience members to play the eponymous, yipping sleigh dogs, Pugs of The Frozen North promises fun and excitement for all the family.

LEWIS BYARD fiveways
A book review from Gary Mepsted...
PLASTERING &
GENERAL BUILDING
“BEFORE SHE MET ME” BY JULIAN BARNES 01273 530977 / 07554750499 Paperback, Vintage £8.99 Might I begin this review by wishing my loyal readers a belated Happy New Year. www.lewisbyardplastering.co.uk 2019 was, in my humble opinion, not a vintage year for novels - or maybe my book choices were unusually poor - and so for this first month of 2020 I’m travelling back in time to 1982 and the publication of Julian Barnes’ second novel, Before She Met Me, a Jacobean-style revenge tale of an historian’s dark and irrational obsession with his wife’s past. 21 Graham Hendrick has left his nagging and belligerent wife, Barbara, for the beguiling and vivacious Ann, a minor actress with a none too wholesome cinematic past. Graham is a dull and eminently sensible fellow, as, you might say, befits his job. When details of Ann’s pre-Graham existence slowly surface Graham becomes increasingly, and unhealthily, fascinated by the life his new wife led before he met her. Before She Met Me is, perhaps, Barnes’ most ‘Marmite’ novel, but I make no apology for heartily recommending it, which I do. The book did, I recall, gain a slew of very positive reviews on publication but has rather fallen off the literary radar since, hence my choosing it this month. Graham is not a terribly sympathetic character, and the end of the novel - no spoilers coming - is shocking in both its brutality and suddenness, but… but, for me, and possibly for you, this short, beautifully written and gloriously funny novel really hits the spot. The stark contrasts thrown up by the clashing of the tragic and farcical elements might cause some readers mental whiplash, but that’s one of the many ways in which Barnes attempts to convey Graham’s strange impulses and lack of reason. It’s a courageous move on Barnes’ part not to play the sympathy card with regards to Graham.

• Kitchens & Bathrooms • Plumbing & Carpentry • Plastering & Tiling • Painting & Decorating Like Bendrix in Greene’s The End of the Affair, Graham is presented warts and all and the book is better, and more • Refurbishments honest, as a result. The best literature is rarely about nice people doing nice things. Before She Met Me reads like a thriller (we should remember Barnes’ defunct alter ego, Dan Kavanagh, author of the brilliant Duffy series of crime novels), and info@jtpugh.com for those willing to take the ride, it’s an exhilarating one. A blackly comic study in sexual jealousy told with wit, www.jtpugh.com insight, fearlessness and Barnes’ trademark intelligence, Before She Met Me remains one of the high points in Barnes’ remarkable career as a novelist.

fiveways Hannah from the Pet Shed with some advice for dog owners...
DO MORE WITH YOUR DOG... We are a nation of animal lovers. 40% of households own a pet with the most popular individual pet being a dog (25%). Dogs are loyal, friendly, smelly, playful, faithful and quite often stubborn, but they all have the same needs. Just like humans, dogs need food, water and shelter to survive but they also need physical care, mental stimulation and nurturing to thrive. Providing these things is an essential part of keeping your dog mentally as well as physically healthy and sets the foundation for a long, happy life with your dog. Sadly many dogs spend hours alone and whilst this 23 sometimes cannot be helped it is down to us, as owners, to redress this balance when we are able. Over the next few months I would like to set you the challenge to do more with your dog. You can also search for the hashtag #domorewithyourdog on social media to get more ideas. When days are short and the weather is grim, keeping a dog entertained indoors is difficult. For this month’s challenge I would like you to make a puzzle for your dog. This is something that the whole family can get involved with and by using recycled materials doesn’t have to cost too much either. Here are a few ideas: • • • • •
Take an old tennis ball, cut a hole or slit and fill with your dog’s favourite treats or kibble. Take an old muffin tin, some treats and a selection of balls. Simply hide the treats under the balls (but not all of them) for your dog to find. Wrap a plastic bottle in an old t-shirt or tie inside an old sock for a crinkly toy. Cut up and plait an old t-shirt to make a tug toy or tie a knot in a scrap of denim from some old jeans. Save your old cereal boxes, put some treats inside and tape back up (with dog-friendly tape of course). Messy but lots of fun.

And please remember, with all treats and toys it is important to supervise your pet and remove anything that could be dangerous or become a choking hazard. Hannah is the current proud pet parent of 16 including her dog (Bourbon, a regular at her shop), 3 cats, Starsky the tortoise, 2 snakes, turkeys, chickens and a guinea pig. Have a pet-related question? Drop a line to Hannah at thepetshed1@gmail.com or pop in and see her at The Pet Shed, 100 Preston Drove, BN1 6EW.
