HOVE PARK Anniversary celebrations at Viva Vinyl...
LOCAL CAFÉ AND RECORD STORE... VIVA VINYL Viva Vinyl has just celebrated its first birthday. Maître d’ Julie Rosehill told us more.
Tell us, what is Viva Vinyl? Viva Vinyl is a record store, café and pop-up restaurant on Queen Victoria Avenue near Hove Park. We combine a traditional coffeeshop with a vinyl record store, creating a community hub for people to meet, eat and socialise. How did the idea come about? With all the main high street music stores dying out we spotted a gap in the market. Viva Vinyl aims to make music buying a social activity once again! People can enjoy a coffee and a crepe while browsing through the formidable collection of classic records, listen before they buy on a selection of portable record players, and liaise with like-minded peers for recommendations. How did you get your hands on so many vintage vinyl records? My husband, Brian, had amassed a 10,000-strong collection that was sitting in a storage unit! Brian has

suffered from Parkinson’s disease for the last 26 years which stripped him of his independence but never his love of music. So when the opportunity became available to open his own record store, just 50m from home, and share his passion for vinyl, it was a no brainer. Now, with classic albums adorning the walls, quirky hand-rippled vinyl lampshades, and an unrivalled selection of psychedelic, progressive and blues rock, his dream has come true. You double up as a pop-up restaurant too? Absolutely. Enlisting the services of Julien Beuriot, former head chef at Le Nantais, the store doubles into a pop-up restaurant at weekends, offering themed evenings with set menus ranging from Moroccan tajines to Sunday roasts. Jules’ cooking is out of this world with only 5-star reviews on TripAdvisor and we recently developed our kitchen to give him more space to work his magic. Have you got anything special planned for September? Well it’s been a difficult year for us. Just after we opened, Brian suffered a nasty fall delivering flyers and required a serious back operation. Fortunately, being the fighter he is, he has improved immeasurably over the last 12 months and to celebrate we’re having an anniversary party on the weekend of Friday 21st September. We will be holding a combined music quiz comedy evening and book launch on the Friday night with charity auction hosted by Graham Jones, author of Last Shop Standing, and Italian food freshly prepared by Jules. On the Saturday we’re having a valuation day for people to have their vinyl collections expertly valued, whilst also hosting a showcase for young, local singersongwriter talent. Oh, and of course a 20% sale on all our stock!

HOVE PARK Look out for a snail near you...
SNAILSPACE ARRIVES... The Snailspace art installation will be coming to the streets of Brighton & Hove from 15th September until 18th November. 50 giant snails, individually decorated by different artists, and over 50 junior snails painted by local schoolchildren, will be located all over the city, sponsored by local businesses. #BeMoreSnail is the motto of Snailspace, which is being organised by Martlets Hospice in conjunction with Wild in Art. The idea behind #BeMoreSnail is to encourage people to slow down, enjoy the moment and spend more time with the people they love. It resonates with the philosophy behind the life-changing care provided by the hospice, and, at the end of the event, the sculptures will be auctioned off to raise money for it. The event has the backing of some of the city’s celebrities. Superstar DJ Norman Cook, AKA Fatboy Slim, will have his very own snail designed by street artist Cassette Lord. Best-selling crime author Peter James will have a snail based on his highly acclaimed Roy Grace series and popular vlogger and boyfriend of Zoella, Alfie Deyes, will also have a giant snail on the route. A comprehensive map and an interactive app will also support the sculpture hunt. The app will encourage visitors to ‘bag’ as many sculptures as possible by tracking how many snails they have found, enable them to vote for their favourites, and unlock special rewards each time a sculpture is found. The map will be available on the Snailspace website, at Martlets shops across the city and at Churchill Square. There will also be a series of special events during the nine weeks. On Friday 12th October Martlets are
organising a Snailway Safari, a sponsored walk with a difference. For one night only the Snailway will become an evening spectacular, with sights, surprises and entertainment along the way. Then, on Oct 19th there will be a citywide #BeMoreSnail day, when Martlets will challenge people to do something which resonates with the idea of being more mindful. Snails will be placed at some of the locations used for the Snowdogs, and a few new locations have been added, including Stoneham Park and George Street. All will be revealed on 15th September! For more information and to keep up to date with all details of the campaign, visit www.snailspacebrighton. co.uk or follow @snailspacebh on social media.

HOVE PARK Our regular healthy living article from Mary Henderson, a doctoral researcher in gut health...
LET’S GET PHYSICAL There’s more to exercise than weight loss and it can’t be replaced by a “calorie-controlled diet” or a mighty metabolism. Here’s why. 1. For your vital organs. Most importantly your hearth as to service every cell with oxygen and nutrient-rich blood and carry away waste products. Exercise strengthens your heart and lowers your resting heart rate– do more with less! 2. Fights off infection. A well-serviced body is less likely to get ill. Exercise stimulates the production of immune cells so that you can better fight common infections. 3. Cancer. Cancer is a complex set of diseases and there is no silver bullet. Exercise lowers your risk. As cancer is a naturally occurring process, healthy bodies have inbuilt mechanisms to prevent it such as triggering the self-destruct button on ‘mutant’ cells so that they can’t spread. 4. Muscles and bones. Everything from walking to weight-bearing activities maintains bone density and protects against brittle bones in old age. Muscles support your structure, prevent falls and store proteins which you need for your body to function properly. 5. Mind. Your brain is also connected to your circulatory system. When it doesn’t get the blood supply and chemical information it needs, we’re more likely to suffer from dementia. There is a biochemical, psychological and social dimension to mental health. A healthy body balances the brain’s chemistry, improves self-esteem and combats stress. There’s an endless list of active hobbies which we can enjoy with people around us. The earlier everyone gets into good habits the better. Don’t wait for everything to head south, under 35s!

HOVE PARK Free PSA tests are being organised by Brighton Lions Club and the Prostate Cancer Support Organisation...
PROBLEMS WITH THE PROSTATE AND THE PSA TEST One in every two men will have a health problem with their prostate at some stage of their lives. It could be an infection, enlargement or cancer. One in every eight men will develop prostate cancer and those of African-Caribbean origin and those with a family history of the disease are two to three times more at risk. PSA stands for Prostate Specific Antigen; it is a simple blood test that measures the amount of antigen, produced by the prostate, entering the blood. It is not a direct test for cancer; a moderately raised reading can be an indicator of a prostate problem, a high reading should trigger further tests to determine if there is a need for any treatment. Some leading clinicians believe all men over 50 should know their PSA and have regular yearly tests. Swedish researchers say PSA testing every man aged 45 – 49 would predict nearly half of all prostate cancer deaths. Without screening, around 47,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year. It is now the leading cancer found in men. Around 11,800 men die of this disease annually, one every 48 minutes. Caught in the early stages, cure rates are dramatically improved with over 80% success. General symptoms of problems with the prostate are frequent need to urinate especially at

night; bursting to urinate, slow flow, difficult, painful; stop/start and dribbling, or blood in the urine. FREE PSA testing is happening in Dorset, Hampshire and Sussex, the three counties covered by the charity PCaSO (Prostate Cancer Support Organisation). We believe overwhelmingly in giving men the right to decision making about their own health choices. We are continuing with our commitment to a PSA testing programme and have now tested over 5000 men across our region since 2013. Despite a persistent reluctance by Public Health England to support free PSA testing for all men in the appropriate age range, PCaSO will continue to offer this service. We are now planning an all-day free test event in Hove in partnership with the Brighton Lions, who are funding the event, for men aged between 45 and 80 at: Bishop Hannington Church, Nevill Avenue, on Saturday 29th September 2018 The testing will be conducted by trained phlebotomists taking blood from a vein in the arm; this will be analysed at a hospital laboratory and the result posted to men within 7 to 10 days. HOVE PARK Sophie Sheinwald tells us about her passion for photographing dogs...
SOPHIE SHEINWALD PHOTOGRAPHY What do you most like about living in Hove? What I love is that there’s about two degrees of separation when I meet people out and about. Despite being a city, Brighton & Hove offers a real sense of connection and community. We see you are a photographer specialising in dog photography... what do you like most about working with dogs? I’ve been an established photographer since 2011, but those who know me know I’m mad about dogs. My obsession became greater recently since borrowing dogs, so I decided to officially offer dog photography services. I plan to create tangible artwork for people to celebrate this unique fluffy relationship. Dogs play a vital role in people’s lives. I love how their unconditional love provides a much needed connection with humans. I started a ‘Street Dog’ photography project in Manhattan nine years ago which rolled out a series of exhibitions called ‘8 Reasons I Ought to Get a Dog’ - it was a giggle and I may do it again. What is the biggest challenge when photographing dogs? With many dogs it’s their unpredictability. For a photo shoot, it’s ideal for me to know about the dog’s personality and characteristics. I’ve been getting a bit of help from dog trainer Lorna of Eli Manoeuvres. She helps me tap into the human-canine relationship. What would a typical shoot consist of? Initially, I like to establish the lifestyle and interests of the dog and family, this directs the style and location of the shoot. The relationship people have with their pets is unique, so there is no typical shoot - it’s a
collaboration of ideas worked out with the owners. A shoot can go from artistically dramatic - the studio setting - to casual and fun out and about. I’m all about the visual story and I’ve decided to offer some packages with a dog story book - I’m excited about that! The relationship with pets is a treasured one, having that encapsulated with photography is wonderful. You said you borrow dogs but will you ever get a dog of your own? One day I’ll probably get a dog but in the meantime I’m happy to play aunty! Is there somewhere we can see your work? Yes, my website sophiesheinwald.com with my dog gallery and sophie_snap on Instagram. Also I have recently brought back to life my ‘8 Reasons Why I Ought to get a Dog’ Facebook page and invite all dog lovers to contribute their dog stories. Thank you Sophie!

Update from the Friends of Three Cornered Copse...
DORMOUSE NEWS... Last month I mentioned that there has been a dormouse survey in progress in Three Cornered Copse, undertaken by Ecological Planning & Research, an organisation which works with developers to assess the ecological impact of new building projects. In this case the proposed development of Toad’s Hole Valley. Photo by Kevin Potter
Some of our group met with Jodie Southgate, a Senior Ecologist at EPR, who explained about the work they are doing. The intention is to reduce the impact of Toad’s Hole development on the threatened biodiversity of the area by enhancing the areas around, which includes Three Cornered Copse. This is funded by the developers to meet the planning specifications of the local council. By enhancing the habitat of the copse, and providing a favourable environment for dormice and other species - birds, bats and invertebrates - they would hope to encourage the dispersal of the animals between Toad’s Hole and Three Cornered Copse. The enhancements would include planting native shrubs and hedgerow, selective thinning (to encourage a denser understorey), and a plan for low intensity management (<10% per year), including coppicing. The nest tubes which have been found in the copse recently are to establish how large the dormice
population is at the moment. Some of the tubes have been “disturbed” over the summer, but are there to serve a well-intentioned purpose. And yes, they have found some dormice. The recent hot weather has taken its toll on the copse vegetation. An oak tree sapling we planted in the earlier wet spring seems to have succumbed to the heat and lack of water. Some other of the more mature trees in the copse have turned their leaves brown already, victims of the drought conditions and the persistent high air temperature. We know that climate change is bound to alter the population of our native woodlands over the years, and we can see these changes taking place in our local parks. A recent article in “nature communications” (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-018-054428) uses a forecast system to show that the next four years will show more extreme temperatures, a natural variation, around the general rise in warming. The article suggests that there will be a warm phase for the next 2-3 years. So be prepared for the warmer summers, and the changes which that will bring. We are planning our workdays for the autumn; the next one is on 1 September, then 27 October. As usual, more information is at http://www.threecorneredcopse.org.uk Simon Baxendale Please send your local articles to info@hoveparkliving.co.uk or call 01273 551021

This letter was sent in by a reader...
READER’S LETTER...HOVE PARK CAFÉ I have written a letter objecting to the ‘secret’ planning consent given to this café extension. Our local councillors knew nothing about this application for the café to be changed to a restaurant. As yet I have had no acknowledgement of my letter to Brighton & Hove Planning Department. I understand the application is for a licensed restaurant with opening hours till 10pm. There are three restauranttype facilities within five minutes’ walk of the park, namely Nando’s, Burger King and an Indian restaurant. A café in the park generally serves coffees, teas, cakes, sandwiches, soups, light snacks and ice creams. Its function is not as a restaurant. This is public open space given to the people of Hove for use as a park. In recent years the park has been franchised out to a gym, a football academy and now to a restaurant. The football academy serves a good purpose. However local residents have football, floodlights and the noise from footballers until 10pm. Was this agreed with local residents? It now appears they will also have the additional trade from the planned restaurant. PROPOSED ENTRANCE VIEW
The proposed café
A sad case of local residents not being included in decision making in what is after all a public space. Meanwhile, the most used facility, the play area, is in desperate need of repair and renovation. Yours Chris Jones B A

Always visceral, always immediate with a terrific command of language, any book by this author is both perceptive and intelligent as well as a rollicking read. With an exploration of the mother/daughter bond at its core, the frame of the story is the relationship between the protagonist and her therapist. Working as a member of a movie production crew before going to study film, Jody increasingly realises she needs help and is recommended a therapist, Claire, who it transpires has issues of her own. As their two unusually parallel tales are gradually relayed you inevitably start to question who is in need of more help, the doctor or the patient? Further issues around adoption complicate their relationship: Jody was adopted and her therapist Claire gave up her own daughter for adoption under difficult circumstances around the time Jody was born. Each woman is driven to explore their own mother/daughter

HOVE PARK relationship and things definitely become tangled. Set mainly in New York City and Los Angeles, the characters’ intimacy grows unhealthily needy as emotional layers are peeled away. Against a backdrop of pure America, a road trip by the way of Memphis and the Grand Canyon with its vivid panorama and tangibly authentic characters develops a further seam to this emotionally rich story. Recently on my own road trip to the States and discovering some of the places featured and of course the people who inhabit them, I started to develop a greater appreciation of this amazing country with its truly vast distances and wild terrain beyond the cities and towns as I explored it first hand. Finding it a fascinating place to visit, it was all too easy to become immersed in this hard wired tale of mothers and daughters where the intricacies of this all too often complex relationship unwind in parallel with the vast U.S.A. landscape, a character in its own right. The author’s memoir The Mistress’s Daughter which I read some time ago gives clear indication from where the emotional base for her fictional writing ideas develop and is also a first rate read. Reading both fiction and memoir by any author opens up the symbiotic nature of their writing and adds a further level to readers’ insight to both. PROPOSALS FOR SHIRLEY DRIVE FLATS REJECTED Brighton & Hove City Council’s Planning Committee has rejected outline plans to demolish a detached house on the corner of Shirley Drive and The Droveway and replace it with ten flats and parking. The proposed building would have been the same height as the existing house. The planning officer had been minded to grant approval for the flats at 10 Shirley Drive. He said that, given that the proposed development would not be dissimilar in terms of footprint, scale and height to the existing building, it would be unlikely to cause significant harm to neighbours. However, the council received more than 200 objections. A spokesman for neighbours said that the application was out of character with the area and its bulk would dwarf nearby buildings. Ward councillor Vanessa Brown also objected to the scheme, saying it would set a precedent for more single occupant homes in the area to be converted into blocks of flats, which would completely change the character of the neighbourhood. The committee refused the application on the grounds that the development would be out of character with the area and result in an overdevelopment of the site, and also on the grounds of loss of amenity to 12 Shirley Drive due to car parking noise and disturbance.

HOVE PARK A chance to visit new places...
HERITAGE OPEN DAYS Every year in September, places across the country throw open their doors to celebrate their heritage, community and history for Heritage Open Days. It’s your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – and it’s all FREE. This year’s Heritage Open Days will be 6-9 and 13-16 September. Local places to visit this year include West Blatchington Windmill at 97 Holmes Avenue. It’s an unusual six-sided smock mill, built c1820 and sketched by John Constable in 1825. The windmill has been restored as a fascinating museum of milling and agricultural history; there are five floors to explore and many unique features to be seen. Open Sunday 9th September, 2pm-5pm, no booking required. On Saturday 8th September (10am-12pm) and Sunday 9th September (11.30am-1.30pm) you can take a guided tour of All Saints Church in The Drive, where British composer Vaughan Williams was married. It’s one of the finest churches of the 19th century Gothic Revival. Other local places to visit include 33 Palmeira Mansions and Embassy Court.

HOVE PARK News from the council...
COMMUNITY CONSULTATION ON CITY PLAN PART 2 Communities across Brighton & Hove now have a further opportunity to comment on the second part of the city’s local development plan.
City Plan Part 2 will sit alongside the adopted City Plan Part 1 to support the provision of more new low-cost homes, local jobs and transport, and health facilities over the next decade. Take part in the consultation online at www.brightonhove.gov.uk/cityplan-part2 City Plan Part 2 focuses on good management of development and ensuring good design, high quality and sustainable development. Its housing policies propose tougher controls on houses of multiple occupation (HMOs). The Plan ensures well designed, purpose-built student accommodation and identifies two further sites where it can be built. A total of 85% of housing sites will come forward on brownfield sites and some urban fringe sites have been identified to provide a positive opportunity to build family and affordable homes, as well as create improved and publicly accessible open space. Most of the urban fringe will however be protected as green space and there will be four new local green spaces. Encouraging new and safeguarding community facilities is also at the heart of City Plan Part 2. A new policy will help protect public houses as community benefit.
Important shopping parades that provide people with access to facilities like newsagents and pharmacies within walking distance of home are recognised. City Plan Part 2 identifies sites for 3,611 new homes to help meet the city’s housing target. When adopted, it will become part of the formal decision-making process of deciding planning applications.
