HOVE PARK There’s free croquet on Hove Lawns on National Croquet Day...

ANYONE FOR CROQUET? Sunday 12th May 2019 is National Croquet Day and Hove Beach Croquet Club is offering free croquet and coaching to anyone - groups or individuals - who would like to try the game. Croquet is a game that is best enjoyed among friends and over the past few seasons the croquet club has become an excellent place to meet good people or just hang out on hazy, lazy summer days. Visitors are welcome, children are welcome, coaching is always available, there is a bar, regular barbecues and plenty of deckchairs. The club is open from May to September, every weekend from 12 to sundown (weather permitting). During the week, local groups and charities have regular sessions. If you know a group that would like to give croquet a try, get in touch through the website or our Facebook page. If you’d like to join, you will find all the information you need on the website. HoveBeachCroquetClub Deckchairs, tables and gazebos will be set out from early morning, there will be games for kids and grown-ups and coaching sessions throughout the day. The Hove Croquet Club on Hove Lawns was first established in 1928 and the new Hove Beach Croquet Club was founded in 2010. We are located next to the Hove and Kingsway Bowling Club, between the King Alfred Leisure Centre and The Venue Beach Bar (formerly The View). Over the years, the game of croquet has gone in and out of fashion. At the end of the 19th century, it was more popular than tennis. Tennis eventually came out on top, largely because of croquet’s unsavoury reputation. In America it became associated with gambling, drinking and philandering to such an extent that it was once banned in Boston as an immoral practice. Herbert Swope, the American newspaperman, on whose estate Groucho Marx and Dorothy Parker were said to have played with unsportsmanlike rivalry, said, “Croquet gives release to all the mischief in you. It makes you want to do bad things… it is a great game.” To keep the spirit alive, our club motto is ”to cause mistrust and resentment among even the best of friends”. INTERESTED? Hove Beach Croquet Club is a very relaxed club for anyone in and around Hove who would like to watch, learn or play croquet.

Why not come to the Ralli Hall Lunch and Social Club a venue for the discerning, elegant older folk of Brighton and Hove, conveniently located by Hove Station at Ralli Hall, Denmark Villas, where you can meet your friends and make new friendships in a relaxed and congenial atmosphere. We meet twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10.00 - 4.00 and while the three-course hot lunch is the focus of our day, we also have exercise classes in the morning along with a discussion group and crossword sessions. After lunch we have a variety of entertaining activities which include bridge, kalooki, rummikub, guest speakers, art and musical entertainment. Tea and biscuits are served both mornings and afternoons. At minimum cost we can offer safe, assisted transport from your home to and from our venue. We welcome the young at heart, who can bring us their lifetime of experience to our group. We would love to hear from you, so please contact Jacquie on 01237 739999 or for further details.

HOVE PARK Our regular healthy living article from Mary Henderson, a doctoral researcher in gut health...

WHY GO TO EXTREMES? With the Brighton and London marathons come and gone, there are those that ask: why on earth would anyone put themselves through such self-flagellation? All that blood, sweat and tears for a medal? It’s much more than a race. Perhaps not everyone gets a buzz but what everyone does get is challenge, focus and, for many, life-changing new habits. Old habits die hard. Attempts to shake up one’s health come in the form of quick-fix fads. Why do they fail? Well, because sudden extreme changes are hard to keep up and provoke the body to kick back. Once back to the old routine, any shortlived gains will be lost. It’s long-term changes that you need to target. Effective behaviour change is said to need three months and marathon training plans are typically four. Making a pledge to a long-term goal is the impetus to get you to stick to a plan. It doesn’t have to be a marathon; it could be a goal to walk a target distance. It’s the pressure and accountability of signing up to a challenge that enforces discipline and commitment. Depending on your personality, a public declaration will invite the necessary support and understanding from your friends, family and work colleagues. Social groups and communities greatly influence your behaviours though a private sense of achievement can be enough.

Working towards a goal makes you find time for yourself and listen to your body in today’s busy world. Personal or emotional reasons spark action. True reward is built on intrinsic motivation so it has to start with you. Mary Henderson

HOVE PARK An article by local resident Stephen Batey...

PHOTOGRAPHY AS ART As this month sees both the Brighton Festival and an art festival in Hove Park, I’m going to take a look at photography as an art form. The question “what is art?” gives rise to a lot of discussion about different art forms, and I’ll duck most of them. Paul Delaroche (a 19th century painter) is quoted as saying “from today painting is dead” when he first saw a photograph. At that time, paintings mostly aimed at realistically portraying people, landscapes, architecture and still life, and the new medium of photography came to be regarded as better for this. Photography at this time was very much a black art, standardised materials were not available, and the whole process was somewhat mysterious. In the 1890s, research by Hurter and Driffield set photography on a firm basis, by showing there was a predictable correlation between the amount of exposure and the effect on light sensitive material. This predictability led one photographer who had previously championed photography as an art form to reverse his opinion, on the grounds that photography was therefore a purely mechanical means of reproduction with no opportunity for personal expression. The fallacy here is

Equivalents by Alfred Stieglitz

that the photographer has a great deal of control over what the camera records. Viewpoint and choice of lens can produce great differences in the way a scene is recorded, and can give a very false impression of what is really there, as I’ve shown in earlier articles. I am at heart a black and white photographer, because I believe that black and white offers greater scope for personal interpretation than colour. Using filters, I can selectively lighten or darken colours; I can change the contrast in a scene significantly and change the mood without it looking unnatural. “Mood” brings us to an important point. A good photograph should produce a response in the viewer other than “that’s nice”. Alfred Stieglitz (an important photographer who also introduced modern art to the United States) produced a series of photographs called “Equivalents”. Writing about these, the Metropolitan Museum of Art said, “in these purposely disorienting and nearly abstract images, Stieglitz sought to arouse in the viewer the emotional equivalent of his own state of mind at the time he took the picture and to show that the content of a photograph was different from its subject.” It is easier to recognise that a photograph produces an emotional response than to describe how to create it. But I feel the first step must be that the photographer has felt something - otherwise the photograph can be only be a simple record except by a happy accident. When I visited a gallery selling photographs, I was almost immediately aware of the difference between two photographers. One showed very clearly what was there, and I felt I knew exactly what the photographer had seen. The other did that, yes - but also conveyed the feeling of being there. In one of his photographs of a snow scene, you could sense the cold rather than just seeing it as a “chocolate box” Christmas snow scene. Stephen Batey

News from BTN BikeShare...

Tigerland © Emmanuel Rondeau

Wildlife Photographer of the Year is the most prestigious photography event of its kind, providing a global platform that showcases the natural world’s most astonishing and challenging sights. Launching in 1965 and attracting 361 entries, today the competition receives almost 50,000 entries from over 90 countries highlighting its enduring appeal. This year’s 100 award-winning images will embark on an international tour that will allow them to be seen by over a million people. Head of Royal Pavilion & Museums Janita Bagshawe said: “We are thrilled to be welcoming the Wildlife Photographer of the Year show to Brighton Museum & Art Gallery. This is an extremely popular show which appeals to people of all ages. The images show nature at its most fascinating, exciting and thought-provoking. We hope it is going to be a huge attraction to visitors and residents this summer.”

The BTN BikeShare scheme is expanding 120 new bikes arrived in April, as it celebrated one million miles of collective cycling. This development is in direct response to customer demand, meaning that more bikes will be available to the scheme’s growing user base. The award-winning scheme has seen upwards of 69,000 users making over 560,000 trips since it launched in September 2017. Further hubs have already been installed in the west of the city, on Preston Street, Connaught Road and Portland Road, including a ‘virtual hub’ outside Portslade train station. The most recent hub added is in Rottingdean. Additional sites are planned for later this year, with the aim to reach even more members of the community who will benefit from bike sharing.

Offering a range of fresh fish, shellfish and seafood products. Committed to being plastic free so only use 100% compostable pots made of veg/plant based matter, waxed paper and paper bags. Open Thurs through to Sun 10am - 4.30pm.

HOVE PARK News from the Friends of Three Cornered Copse...

BUSY WORK DAYS AT THE COPSE In a hectic month, the Friends of Three Cornered Copse have had two busy work days. The first was on 23 March, which was Keep Britain Tidy’s weekend for The Great British Spring Clean. Once again a small group of volunteers braved the cold weather and scoured the Three Cornered Copse for foreign bodies to load into our black sacks. Fully equipped and helped by our new Park Ranger, Neil, we managed to fill several sacks with bottles, cans, plastics and, strangely, several items of clothing. The result was a collection of rubbish which, compared to previous years, was not a great deal. Could it be that today’s park users are more diligent in taking home their rubbish? It’s certainly true that compared to the other green spaces around our city, the copse gets away quite lightly these days, as far as small items of litter are concerned. The council’s Tidy Up Team have filled trucks with litter and tippings from some of the other parks. There is still a problem with the disposal of garden and building rubbish in the copse, but that’s not a concern for the Great British Spring Clean this year. In our second work day, again assisted by Neil, we installed the first of our two, (long-awaited), information boards at the top of the copse. These boards were designed and printed many months ago, and inform new

visitors something about the history and the evolution of the area that became Three Cornered Copse. The support posts took a considerable effort to erect, digging through tree roots and chalk to a decent depth. No concrete was used, just the chalk from the woods. The bitter cold winds hindered our activities, but finally the posts were in place and the team posed proudly for the photograph showing the completed project. The second of these boards will be installed once the house building has finished at the bottom corner, near the junction of Goldstone Crescent and Woodland Drive. This will probably be June or July this year. At this time of year, our woodlands are coming into their best, with rapid plant growth and frantic bird Host Families needed life activity. SHIRLEY DRIVE FLATS GIVEN GO-AHEAD A government planning inspector has overturned the decision by Brighton & Hove City Council’s Planning Committee in July 2018 to reject permission for outline plans to demolish a detached house on the corner of Shirley Drive and The Droveway and replace it with ten flats and parking. A council planning officer had been minded to grant approval last year for the flats at 10 Shirley Drive. He said that, given that the proposed development would not be dissimilar in terms of footprint, scale and height to the existing building, it would be unlikely to cause significant harm to neighbours. However, the council received more than 200 objections to the application. Ward councillor Vanessa Brown also objected, saying it would set a precedent for more single occupant homes in the area to be converted into blocks of flats, which would completely change the character of the neighbourhood. The planning committee last year refused the application on the grounds that the development would be out of character with the area and result in an overdevelopment of the site, and also on the grounds of loss of amenity to 12 Shirley Drive due to car parking noise and disturbance.

The owners lodged an appeal at the end of November 2018. On 28th March Planning Inspector David Fitzsimon allowed the appeal and granted outline planning permission. He said that a 10-unit apartment block could be introduced to the site without harming the character and appearance of the local area and without unduly compromising the living conditions of the occupiers of 12 Shirley Drive.

The vision was to retain the warmth of a charity shop while improving the layout and whole experience for customers. The store will be smarter and brighter with new signage. It will be the first local charity shop to have a dedicated counter for donations and the till has also been moved to improve the flow of the store. Each area of the store will be clearly arranged to make it easier for customers to find great bargains.

BRIGHTON FESTIVAL 2019... Featuring over 130 events, Brighton Festival 2019 is a space for contemporary expression from around the world, from 4 to 26 May. This year’s guest director is Malian musician Rokia Traoré. As always, the Festival will include free and participatory activities for all ages, beginning with the annual Children’s Parade on Saturday 4 May - this year’s theme is folk tales from around the world. Marking 50 years since the first moon landings, Brighton will have its very own moon with artist Luke Jerram’s realistic illuminated lunar model lighting up the sky above Queen’s Park. Recognised cultural figures will bring new work. Authors Ben Okri and Jon Ronson discuss their latest publications; Neneh Cherry performs songs from her new release, Broken Politics; and comedian Ruby Wax will teach us how to be human. Without Walls bring a visually spectacular group of outdoor events, including a day of free family friendly performances on the beach level at the British Airways i360 (Sat 11 May, 11am-8pm). There will be a variety of concerts at All Saints Church in The Drive, including Brighton Festival Youth Choir with Under the Moon, an eclectic songbook of moon music ranging from classical to jazz (Fri 17 May, 6pm). Brighton Youth Orchestra perform a Fiesta of Music from around the World (Sun 12 May, 5pm), featuring works by Sibelius and Berlioz, Greek dances, traditional Zimbabwean songs and music by film composer John Williams. Quartet Ensemble Variances will play Outre Mémoire, a 12-movement work that commemorates the impact of the transatlantic slave trade (Thurs 16 May, 8pm); and early-music vocal ensemble Stile Antico join with Syrian

An update on Sam Weber’s jungle survival challenge...

AMAZON CHALLENGE... Sam Weber, from King George VI Drive, Hove, is taking on a series of challenges during 2019 raising money for local children’s hospice, Chestnut Tree House, and Worthing-based adults’ hospice, St Barnabas House; starting with climbing Mt Kilimanjaro and including an extreme jungle survival challenge.

After deciding at the end of 2018 that he wanted a new challenge, Sam quickly booked a trip to Mt Kilimanjaro. He took on the 19,341ft (5,895m) high mountain in Feb-

ruary and raised over £3,600 to date. “I was quite nervous about the altitude,” Sam said, “but I did do plenty of training over Devil’s Dyke and in my gym at home trained by my wife Natasha who is a personal trainer.” In addition to Kilimanjaro, Sam has the Yorkshire Three Peaks, the national Three Peaks, and a 400ft abseil booked for 2019. He has also recently returned from spending 16 days in the Amazon rainforest where he took on an extreme jungle survival challenge with After 10 days’ survival training from a former special forces op and members of the Makushi tribe, Sam spent three days and two nights in total isolation in the jungle with nothing more than a machete, bow and arrow and a basic survival belt-kit. He took on the experience fully aware that he could encounter a range of obstacles - not least snakes, spiders, caimans, electric eels and piranhas - but wanted to do something really challenging, both mentally and physically. Sam said spending two nights (11½ hours pitch black) on his own in isolation was very scary. His other scariest moments were catching a caiman while night fishing; landing a piranha and vampire fish, and a four-foot electric eel; and finding a tree python on his hammock! When asked why he has chosen to take on these challenges, Sam said: “Part of me just wanted a goal to focus on, but since I have started fundraising I have found that it feels so good to be doing the challenges for a cause. I’ve had some connections with adult hospices and found out about Chestnut Tree House when I took part in their Operation Mud event, and I decided I wanted to raise money for both Chestnut Tree House and St Barnabas House to help local children and families.” To donate, visit
