HOVE PARK Meet a local resident who can help you get fit...

HOVE PARK PERSON – JACK R LAING Jack R Laing lives in the Hove Park area. He’s a personal trainer and owns Studio JRL, a fitness studio in Woodland Parade. How did you become a personal trainer? I came back from travelling aged 20 and ended up working in a bank giving financial advice. While I was working there, I was in the process of becoming a fireman. Unfortunately I didn’t make the cut. A year passed and I was still working for the bank and one evening I just thought, “Dang it, I’m not sitting behind a desk any more.” I was part of the ZT Fight Skool team while working at the bank and decided I wanted to do something I love exercise. That night I enrolled in a PT course in London and gave my notice to the bank. Three months later I was qualified and started working at ZT Fitness. What I didn’t know is starting off in a gym you make minimum wage. Going from a great wage at the bank to minimum wage was a huge motivation to me. By the end of the year I was the busiest trainer in ZT. What can a personal trainer offer? I’m so lucky that all my clients are my friends. Obviously I help people get in great shape.

Tell us more about your fitness studio... You will enter unmotivated, upset and lost; you will leave with an unbeatable mindset and a sense of direction. Have you had any famous clients? I have worked with British boxer Chris Eubank Jr for around seven years. I’m lucky to get paid to travel the world and live the “entourage life”. I’ve also worked with a few celebrities from TV series; I’ve worked with Katie Price in her desire to complete a half marathon, England rugby international Marcus Smith, and YouTubers KSI and Mikey Pearce.

What’s your top tip for getting fitter in the new year? Book in to see me at the Studio and you will never need a personal trainer again. What do you like to do when you’re not working? I don’t see my job as work. However I’m very lucky to have a super supportive wife, so when I’m not working I’m working. For me work is an addiction. HOVE PARK A great new project from One Church Brighton to get people talking...

TABLE TALK BRIGHTON TABLE TALK has been launched. The mission is to make Brighton even more friendly by offering opportunities to talk to new people. The simple idea is that cafés have an assigned table, marked with a TABLE TALK BRIGHTON stand, where people sit if they’re happy to talk to other customers. It’s for everyone, alone, with a friend, child or carer. We want people to TAKE TIME TO TALK. Maybe you’d like to meet and talk to more people, or take a break from your phone or laptop. Even a short conversation could make a big difference – you never know who you might meet. TABLE TALK has been supported enthusiastically, not only by cafés but by people of all ages and by the leader of Brighton & Hove City Council. Already participating are cafés in different areas of the city, including the seafront and Preston Park. Among them are independents, cafés within stores such as M&S, Debenhams and Waterstones, the national café Starbucks, the two main Royal Sussex County Hospital cafés, Café Domenica in Hove Library and community cafés. The idea developed when sadly there were accounts of people going for days without speaking to anyone. More recently BBC research has shown that many people, especially 16-24 year olds, feel lonely at some time. Brighton is a friendly city but can be lonely for some. We want an assigned table to become the norm in city cafés for everyone to enjoy. Some cafés will offer TABLE TALK all the time whilst others on a specific day or time. Details are on the website www.tabletalkbrighton.org or Facebook.com/ tabletalkbrighton. More cafés are being added, aiming to have one close to each medical surgery in Brighton. Why not give this a try as the new year starts? It could make 2019 a more interesting and enjoyable year for

you. Some of us feel uncomfortable going into a café alone but it’s a safe environment. Although we can’t promise that someone will share the table, you’ll be welcome. Do encourage others to join in and TAKE TIME TO TALK. A few people have volunteered to work together to make this exciting project happen. We’d love to hear of your experiences — email tabletalk@onechurchbrighton.org

HOVE PARK Our regular healthy living article from Mary Henderson, a doctoral researcher in gut health...

BODY CLOCK... Last year the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded for the discovery of the biological molecular clock. We all have genes which encode for the workings of these ‘clocks’ which set the rhythms for our physiological processes. They are roughly geared around 4am corresponding to immune system genes and 4pm for genes responsible for muscle activity and metabolism. The Bath Breakfast project and the Big Breakfast project point out that this is one of the reasons that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Studies have shown that not only does it regulate appetite but that it also makes us more active, unconsciously; that is, not that we feel like heading down the gym, but even just sat at our desks, we burn more calories through light activity, small involuntary movement such as fidgeting. Findings Breakfast is the most important meal of the day to be published early next year also found that eating breakfast leads to lower levels of fat and the fat cells we do have are more metabolically active and healthier. A reminder: we all need a certain amount of fat which plays a role in how your body regulates your metabolism and energy levels. UK eating patterns have shifted with most calories consumed towards the end of the day. Our bodies use these calories more efficiently when eaten earlier on. The golden rule of “if you eat more calories than you burn, you will put on weight” still holds true, but how our bodies process these calories is influenced by when we eat them. Mary Henderson

GOLDSTONE FARM This photo from 1880 looks south-west across the farm buildings to the railway line. Part of the large meadow later became Brighton & Hove Albion’s Goldstone Ground. Behind the long garden wall was a rough track, now known as Goldstone Lane. The farm extended westwards to Sackville Road, then known as Hove Drove. On the left can be see one of the four cottages for the farm labourers. There is now a retail park on the site.

HOVE PARK Local news...

TOAD’S HOLE VALLEY PLANNING APPLICATION SUBMITTED A planning application has been submitted to Brighton & Hove City Council for a major development at Toad’s Hole Valley, to the west of King George VI Avenue. The plans have been submitted by St Congar Properties on behalf of the Toad’s Hole Valley landowners. St Congar will not build out the site themselves, but will sell parcels to other developers and/or housing associations to deliver. St Congar say: “After years of consultation the longawaited plans for Toad’s Hole Valley have now been submitted to the council. The carefully considered application will provide much-needed community benefits and infrastructure improvements.” The site is identified for development in Brighton and Hove’s City Plan Part One and is the largest greenfield development site in the city. It is currently remnant land from what was a downland farm. Court Farm is not part of the proposed development, as it is in different ownership to the rest of the site.

The Toad’s Hole Valley Masterplan

880 new homes are proposed, 50% of which will have three or more bedrooms. 40% of the homes will be affordable and priority for these homes will be given to those who are living or working in Brighton and Hove. There will also be 3.5 hectares of employment space. St Congar propose to provide more parking than is required by the council to ensure every property has adequate spaces, rather than rely on street parking or overspill to surrounding residential streets. For example, a three-bed property would have two parking spaces. The plan is for HGVs to be deterred with signage from using King George VI Avenue and encouraged to use the A293 junction to access Brighton. The road would be narrowed to a single lane in each direction and there would be a number of access points to serve the new development, slowing traffic. Connections would be improved between Toad’s Hole Valley and the surrounding residential area, eg there would be new pedestrian crossings. St Congar say that the Site of Nature Conservation Importance (SNCI) at the western edge of the site is currently overgrown, inaccessible and misused. They say the development will restore this area to chalk grassland, scrub and woodland in keeping with the character of the South Downs. The dew pond would also be restored, and pedestrian/cycle paths provided. At the time of writing, details of the planning application had not yet appeared on the council’s Planning Register, but more information is available at www.toadsholevalley.co.uk.

HOVE PARK Update from the Friends of Three Cornered Copse...

FALLEN TREE IN THREE CORNERED COPSE Three Cornered Copse can be a dangerous place to walk. During one of the windy nights last month, a large tree monolith fell to the ground across the main pathway through the woodland, completely blocking the route. Luckily no one was around to be hurt, but smaller dead branches are falling to the ground every day. The chance of being killed by a falling tree is very small, about 1 in 20 million, according to the UK Health and Safety Executive. Which is less than being hit by a lightning bolt, or winning the lottery. Around six people in the UK die from falling trees each year; thankfully, no accidents have occurred in our copse. At least, not yet. (Perhaps not quite as dangerous a place after all.) Some more work for the Park Rangers, and a chainsaw, to clear the path, because leaving

it to rot is not an option. It takes a minimum of 50 years for a large tree to decompose completely. Researchers in the United States have devised mathematical models for 36 species of trees, to predict how long they will take to be consumed by the decomposing agents of fungi and invertebrates. Some pines will take over 100 years. In the copse, some of the fallen trees from 1987 are still around, and look like they will be there for some time, slowly sinking into the ground. While we witness the demise of one tree, the Friends of Three Cornered Copse have been busy planting more trees. On our recent work day we planted another 150 hedge whips of blackthorn, hazel, hawthorn and other native plants along the edge of Dyke Road Avenue to provide habitats for the dormouse and other mammals. We also planted three elm saplings, donated by one of our members, which we added at the edge of the woodland. The trees are donated by The Conservation Volunteers, in partnership with OVO Energy, in their “I Dig Trees” programme. Canes and protective spiral sleeves are provided to keep the rabbits from the young shoots, and give them a good start. A staggering 728,000 trees have been planted by community groups since 2015 all around the country. (See tcv.org.uk for more details.) It will be interesting to see how the hedges develop over the next few seasons. Thanks to our volunteers who turned out to help. Simon Baxendale

HOVE PARK An exciting new gallery funded by a donation from a Hove resident...

ELAINE EVANS ARCHAEOLOGY GALLERY A new archaeology gallery at Brighton Museum opens to the public on 26th January. It’s named after its major benefactor, Hove resident Elaine Evans. You will be able to get up close and personal with some of the earliest residents of Sussex and discover the compelling story of our ancestors who lived in Brighton & Hove through the centuries from the Ice Age to the Saxons. At the heart of the exhibition are seven forensically accurate 3D facial reconstructions revealing the faces of people, some of whose remains were found in and around Brighton & Hove from the Ice Age to the Saxon era. Using modern scientific technology, research into the lives of these people has discovered a wealth of mystery, drama and tragedy through childbirth, malnutrition, toothache and possibly murder. Now you can see what they looked like and learn their real-life stories. Elaine Evans said: “For many years history and archaeology have fascinated me. One marvellous day I spotted a Stone Age flint blade by chance in my back garden in Hove, brought to the surface by worms. I was the first person to hold it since it was dropped by a hunter-gatherer thousands of years ago: the blade was still sharp. It’s wonderful that the museum will bring history alive to visitors young and old.” Other highlights include digital animated scenes of woolly mammoth, bison, elephants and hyenas wandering the streets of Brighton, and a bird’s eye view of the Sussex coastline, showing how it has changed over the last 250,000 years. Iain Carter

THIS REALLY ISN’T ABOUT YOU By Jean Hannah Edelstein As soon as I spotted the intriguing cover to this book I was immediately hooked. On a cold winter’s day the photo is in cool blue tones, the author is looking directly at the camera and is pictured just off centre of the frame in a jostling street in hectic New York City with the whirl of the city crowds around her.

The focus of this photograph she may be but her assured yet self effacing writing is undeniably not ego centric. What make this memoir one that stands out is its compassionate and considerate telling of her early adult life and what fate likely has in store. Drawn back to the States from England to care for a dying father after 14 years of living and working abroad, she uncovers the knowledge that a rare gene that makes the carrier more likely to develop certain kinds of cancer runs in her family. A test is available to find out whether she carries this gene but she is understandably uncertain

as a young woman starting out on life whether she wants this decisive knowledge or not. Through exploring her life up to that point - why she left the US for London, her early working life there and then leaving it all behind because of family duty - it’s hard not to empathise with her as she relates prosaically her life up until her genetic outcome is revealed. This is a memoir about growing up, learning what life is about, getting to know family as an adult and dealing with inevitable grief. The author is a freelance writer who contributes to the Guardian on family, parenting and relationships. And from recent posts it looks like she has another story to tell, this time about her journey through IVF. She hopes to start a family free of the genetic code that has made her by necessity think about her mortality much earlier than any young woman should have to. Book covers are often decidedly tricky to interpret but in this case the publishers got it completely right in my opinion. The eye-catching cover and distinctive title lures you in and it’s definitely a fascinating and well written memoir that’s well worth reading. HOVE PARK The latest news from the Friends of Hove Park...

HAPPY NEW YEAR... The start of a new year is a time for looking both backwards and forwards - the month of January is named after the Roman god Janus who is depicted with two faces to look both to the future and to the past. After the extreme weather and confusing seasons last year it will be interesting to see what 2019 brings. The wayfaring tree whips definitely seemed to have lost their way a bit - flowering in November! Is this six months early or six months late?

It was a year of change for some of the sporting users of Hove Park with the new 3G football pitch and a bright new surface on the tennis courts. The photo shows these areas looking very colourful, particularly with the trees in their autumn hues. The children’s playground saw some improvements, with the worn matting replaced under several pieces of equipment and some much needed repairs, but is still looking rather tired and has unfortunately also suffered from vandalism. The Friends will be continuing their fundraising campaign. And finally Persephone, the Snailspace visitor to Hove Park, is seen with her snail friends at the Farewell Event before going on to raise £4,800 for the Martlets at the auction. HOVE PARK News from Martlets hospice...

GET FIT FOR TEAM MARTLETS Push yourself with a personal fitness goal that will also make a real difference to local charity Martlets. It’s time to step up your training and join Team Martlets to run one of three high profile spring marathons to raise essential funds for the hospice. Martlets places are available for the Brighton Half Marathon on Sunday 24th February, the London-based Big Half on Sunday 10th March and the Brighton Marathon on Sunday 14th April. Clem Hunnisett from the Martlets Fundraising Team said, “Why wait until the New Year to make a fitness resolution; now’s the time to get outside and start training! If you’re really keen you could enter all three and score your own personal hat-trick! “Running for a charity that’s local to you, and perhaps close to your heart, means that you know just how much it means to families in your community. You’ll be raising essential funds that help people from Brighton & Hove to receive the care they need to live their lives positively, plus your efforts will also support those around them, their friends and loved ones. “Once we have confirmed that you have a place we will send you our Martlets fundraising pack, which will help you to reach your sponsorship target, and a running vest to wear on the day. “If you’ve already got your place and would like to run for us then please do get in touch so that we can support you with your fundraising.”

HOVE PARK The programme for CAMEO over-50s club…

Local news...

JANUARY & FEBRUARY CAMEO PROGRAMME

RESIDENT PARKING SCHEME GETS CLOSER

CAMEO (Come And Meet Each Other) is an over-50s group which meets at Bishop Hannington Church Hall, Nevill Avenue, every Thursday from 10am-12 noon.

Brighton & Hove City Council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee approved at the end of November that a new resident parking scheme should be considered within the Hove Park area.

We have tea/coffee and chat for an hour, followed by entertainment. Entrance costs £1.50 Here is the programme of events for January and February:

The proposed parking zone area is between the dashed lines

3rd January Welcome to 2019 10th January After-Christmas Swap Shop 17th January Holiday memories of Sweden - Chris Dalton 24th January Name That Tune with Bill 31st January March of the Penguins 7th February Friends against Scams - Jake Watts 14th February The Canadian Wilderness 21st February Life in the British Merchant Navy Anthony Devanney 28th February Old Hove with Roy For more information, call Laura on: 07909 918796.

The proposal is for a light touch scheme, which would mean that only residents with permits would be able to park between 9-10am and 1-2pm, Monday to Friday. The committee has also approved that the proposal should be progressed to the final design with the Traffic Order, to allow for further comment. All comments will be reported back to a further meeting of the committee. At an initial public consultation in 2017, only 43% of residents supported a parking scheme. A further consultation was then carried out in a smaller area, in which there was 68% support for a scheme. Roads on the periphery of this area were then advised that they might be affected by displacement parking, as their single yellow lines would be removed if they weren’t part of the scheme, and at this stage most residents of these roads backed the scheme. Council officers say that any yellow lines that are considered appropriate outside of the proposed parking schemes will also be investigated and advertised alongside the parking scheme traffic order. The proposed parking zone will run from the east side of the park, excluding Goldstone Crescent, as far as The Upper Drive and Dyke Road. To the north, it will go to the top of Hill Brow.
